AUSTIN FOOTBALL

The Austin football team finished it season with a 3-6 record after it dropped its first tournament game in a 21-16 loss to Owatonna. The Packers spent all season looking for a passing game and sophomore Jakob Crouch gave the team a boost at the end of the year. The Packers had a strong ground game on the season as junior Brandon Edgar, who ran for 968 yards and 14 TDs last season, and Nate Conner, who ran for 813 yards and 7 TDs, provided a dual threat. Austin will bring much of its lineup back for the 2015 season as the Packers played plenty of sophomores and juniors in 2014. AUSTIN DAILY HERALD – SPORTS YEARBOOK

AUSTIN VOLLEYBALL

The Packers finished with a record of 3-25 overall as it lost its first tournament contest by scores of 25-7, 25-14, 25-16 to Rochester John Marshall. The Packers struggled to win matches, but they were able to make them closer than in year's past.

Austin, which had 13 seniors on its roster, finished the season with a 9-9-2 overall record. The Packers will miss Roel Torres, who was one of the team's top goal scorers in year's past. “We have a lot of seniors who have put a lot of hard work into the program,” Austin head coach Jens Levisen said after the season. “They certainly will be missed. They have an impact on the younger players looking up to them.”

AUSTIN GIRLS SOCCER

The Packers finished 1-9-5 overall as they lost 1-0 to

in 2014. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Emma Kleis, Abby Gogolewski, Mikayla Finney and Maddie Kinney took 13th place as they finished with a time of 1:42.65. Kleis and Gogolewski will return to the team in 2015.

AUSTIN CROSS COUNTRY

The Packers made school history as they made it to the Class AA state meet as a team for the first time ever in 2014. Austin finished 11th out of 16 teams at state with a state lineup that didn't have any seniors on it. Madison Overby, who has now competed in five state meets, finished 51st, Abby Lewis took 68th, Paiton Schwab finished 118th, Tasia Martinson took 145th, Morgan Hose took 154th and Nicole Justice took 162nd. “It’s a big step for the program,” Overby said. “Hopefully it brings out more girls to cross country, because they can see that not only is it a fun group, but we’re successful too.”

Offense was a problem all season long for the Packers, who played a lot of underclassmen. The Packers will bring back keeper Chloe Summerfield, who kept the team in a lot of games.

AUSTIN GIRLS TENNIS

The Packers finished 2-14 overall and their team season came to an end on a 5-2 loss at Hastings in the first round of the tournament. The Packers had 10 seniors and they graduated four-year No. 1 singles player Alicia Sforza.

After going to the Class AAA state tournament the three previous seasons, the Packers had their season end in the first round of the Section 1AAA tournament when they lost to Kasson-Mantorville 66-40. Austin finished the season 14-13 overall and it was led by senior forward Gach Gach, who averaged 14.6 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. Austin looks to build in the future as it played sophomore Oman Oman and freshmen Tate Hebrink and Both Gach

The Packers got past the first round of the playoffs, but their season ended on a 62-51 loss to Kasson-Mantorville in the Section 1AAA semifinals. The Packers finished 13-15 overall and they were led by sophomore center Ruth Koang, who averaged 12.9 points, 11.8 rebounds and 3.7 blocks per game.

AUSTIN BOYS HOCKEY

The Packers gave No. 4 seeded Faribault a battle, but it lost its first Section 1AA tournament game 2-1 on a late power play goal. Austin finished the year 3-22-1 overall and junior goalie Jacob Johnson gave the team a boost.

AUSTIN GIRLS HOCKEY

The Packers finished the season 11-13-2 overall and it had its season end 4-3 on a loss at Faribault in the Section 1AA quarterfinals. The Packers relied heavily on a strong group of juniors that included top goal scorer Chloe Summerfield, forward Madison Overby and goalies Allison Hoban and Mara Overby. “It’s what we put in during the offseason that’s going to make a difference,” Austin head coach Brett Vesel said after the season. “We’ve made some huge strides this year, but now what are we going to do with it? That’s the key. AUSTIN WRESTLING

Austin seniors Brandon Cotter and Kole Igou each made their first-ever trip to the Class AAA state wrestling meet, but

neither of them were able to win a match at state. Igou was pinned by Mark Hall of Apple Valley, the top ranked wrestler in the nation at 170 in the second period, and Cotter was pinned by Garrett Beaman of Henry Sibley in the first period.

AUSTIN DANCE

The Packer dance team competed in its 13th straight state meet as it took fifth place in the Class AA state high kick finals. Skylar Kroneman and Megan Condit made the Class AA All-State tournament high kick team.

AUSTIN GYMNASTICS

The Austin gymnastics team took sixth place at the Class AAA state meet in its first year under head coach Alex Bade. The Packers finished with a team score of 142.650 and Detroit Lakes won the meet with a 150.025. THURSDAY, JUNE 25, 2015

Herald file photo In the individual Class A state meet, Austin freshman Jennifer Boyle won a state title in the uneven parallel bars with a score of 9.575. Boyle finished ninth in the all-around with a score of 36.975. Austin sophomore Maddie Mullenbach finished in the top five of the all-around for the third straight year at state when she took fifth place. Mullenbach also took fifth on the floor with a 9.5.

AUSTIN BOYS SWIMMING AND DIVING

Austin’s Craig Heimark had a huge day at the Class A state swimming and diving meet as he reset two of AHS school records and won the Packers’ first individual state title since 2003. Heimark won the 100-yard freestyle at the state meet with a time of 45.54 seconds and he took third in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.25 seconds. Heimark was on the fourth place 200-yard freestyle relay team along with Seth Clasen, Isaac Christopherson and Sawyer Myers and he was on the third place 400-yard freestyle relay team with Christopherson, Ben Walker and Myers. Walker took fourth in the 100-yard butterfly for the Packers.

AUSTIN BASEBALL

The Austin baseball team won its first postseason contest since 2009, but its season came to an end on a 6-2 loss to Rochester Century in a Section 1AAA elimination game. The Packers, who finished the year 9-13 overall, beat Lakeville South 2-1 in a play-in game, they lost 3-0 to Northfield and they beat Farmington 4-1 in an elimination game. Austin senior Nik Gasner allowed just three earned runs in his last 27 innings and he won his last four starts — including two postseason victories. “Looking back at last year and being knocked out right away was a disappointment,” Austin head coach Chris Gogolewski said after the season. “To play as deep in the section tournament as we did this year shows that these boys have what it takes to play postseason ball.”

AUSTIN SOFTBALL

The Austin softball team had its season come to an end when it lost its first Section 1AAA tournament game 4-2 to Owatonna. The Packers finished the year with a record of 6-15 overall

and they relied heavily on the play of senior Sydney Murphy and juniors Shayley Vesel and Jordan Huntley.

AUSTIN TRACK AND FIELD

Austin sophomore Jany Gash made it to his first Class A state meet, but he wasn't able to reach the finals in the triple jump. Gash's best jump at state was 42 feet, 5 inches. Austin junior Rachel Quandt didn't get to the state meet, but she set a new AHS school record in the 100-meter hurdles. Quandt's record is 15.22 seconds.

The Awesome Blossoms went 22-4 overall, but their season came to an end in a 38-33 loss to Goodhue in the Section 1A West semifinals. BP was led by senior Taylor Hagen, who is BP's all-time leading scorer and Madison Worke. BP head coach John Worke resigned after the season.

Zach Nirk and Ethan Arett each made their first Class A state meet for the Awesome Blossoms, but neither of them was able to place.

The Awesome Blossoms went 4-16 overall and their season came to an end in a 6-4 loss to Hayfield in the Section 1A West quarterfinals. The Blossoms were led by seniors Sam Swenson and John Rumpza.

The Awesome Blossoms finished 11-11 overall and their season came to an end in a 10-0 loss to Fillmore Central in a Section 1A elimination game. The Blossoms had a young squad and they were led by sophomore pitcher Elly Strunk and senior catcher Tessa Ivers. BLOOMING PRAIRIE FOOTBALL

The Awesome Blossoms played in their first Class A state football tournament since 2012, but they were knocked off in the quarterfinals in a 14-6 loss to Lakeville North. BP finished the season 11-1 overall and it was led by the one-two punch of senior quarterback John Rumpza and senior running back Jake Decker. Rumpza finished his BP career with the second-most career TD passes (112) and second-most career passing yards (8,991) in Minnesota history and Decker had more than 1,500 yards of offense and 19 TDs. BP will have to rebuild next year as it graduated a big senior class.

BLOOMING PRAIRIE VOLLEYBALL

The Blooming Prairie volleyball team went 17-13 as it lost to Hayfield 25-20, 25-16, 25-18 in the Section 1A West semifinals. BP had three of its best senior volleyball players in

school history on the roster in 2014. Taylor Hagen finishes as the schools' all-time leader in kills leader, Madison Worke is BP's all-time set assist leader and Nicole Inwards is BP's all-time dig leader. BP head coach Gina McLaughlin announced her resignation after the season.

HAYFIELD SOFTBALL

The Vikings competed in their first Class A state tournament since 1994, but it fell 7-2 to eventual state champ New Life Academy in the quarterfinals and it lost 9-0 to Edgerton/Southwest Christian in a consolation round elimination game. Hayfield, which went 21-6 overall, started six freshmen and the team looked to juniors Grace Mindrup, a catcher, and Jackie Sanvick, a pitcher, for leadership. Hayfield will return much of its lineup next season. “I think it’s valuable for them in every season because they’ve got a taste of what it can be,” Hayfield head coach Jana Wagner said after the season. “They’ll be better at volleyball, they’ll be better at basketball and they should be back here [in softball] next year. Our team is basically the same team next year.”

HAYFIELD GOLF

Hayfield senior Brady Becker took 24th place in his third and final appearance at the Class A state golf meet. Becker finished with a two-day score of 163. Hayfield's Aaron Anderson took 69th place in his first state meet with a two-day score of 181.

HAYFIELD FOOTBALL

The Vikings went 1-8 overall and they had their season come to an end in a 49-8 loss to Caledonia in the Section 1AA quarterfinals. Hayfield was led by senior quarterback Cam Rutledge.

HAYFIELD VOLLEYBALL

The Vikings went 18-11 overall and their season came to an end in a 25-27, 25-19, 25-21, 25-13 loss to Faribault Bethlehem Academy in the Section 1A West Finals. The Vikings were led by seniors Jo Bungum and Bhrett Zahnle, and freshmen Maggie Streightiff and Carrie Rutledge also stepped up.

HAYFIELD CROSS COUNTRY

Hayfield senior Gabe Tempel took 39th in his third straight appearance at the Class A state cross country meet. Tempel finished with a time of 16:57.3 and he finished better every year he made it to the state meet.

HAYFIELD BOYS BASKETBALL

The Vikings struggled with a new lineup for most of the year as they went 10-16 overall and lost to Pine Island 62-54 in the Section 1AA quarterfinals. Hayfield, which had five first year starters, was led by

Hayfield senior Cody Carpentier took sixth place in the shot put and he didn't place in the discus at the Class A state track and field meet. Carpentier came up with a throw of 50 feet, 8.25 inches in the shot put.

The Vikings went 19-8 overall and they had their season end in a 55-49 loss to Kenyon-Wanamingo in the Section 1AA West semifinals. The Vikings were led by seniors Jo Bungum and Bhrett Zahnle.

HAYFIELD WRESTLING

HAYFIELD BASEBALL

The Vikings won their first subsection title since 1999, but they couldn't make their first trip to the Class A state tournament in school history. Hayfield, which finished its season 18-7 overall, had two chances to get to state, but it lost both times to Lewiston-Altura by scores of 4-2 and 5-3 in the Section 1A title game. The Vikings leaned on senior ace pitcher Cam Rutledge, and sophomore Adam Fjerstad gave the team a boost on the mound as well.

Southland SOUTHLAND FOOTBALL

The Rebels finished their season with a 5-4 overall record after they lost 47-17 to Faribault Bethlehem Academy in their postseason opener. Southland was ravaged by injuries in 2014, but it was able to rally win three out of its last five regular season games. Southland junior Jackson Koenigs missed three games due to an injury, but he still racked up 65 tackles, 6 sacks and 10 tackles for a loss.

SOUTHLAND VOLLEYBALL

The Rebels finished 13-14 overall after they were swept by Medford by scores of 25-21, 25-22, 25-17 in their tournament opener. Southland was led by junior Olivia Gray, who had 220 kills and 212 digs.

GMLOS CROSS COUNTRY

GMLOS didn't have any state qualifiers in 2014.

SOUTHLAND BOYS BASKETBALL

The Southland boys basketball team went 8-20 overall and it had its season end on a 67-49 loss to Blooming Prairie in the Section 1A West quarterfinals. The Rebels were led by junior Josh Anderson and sophomore Chris Webber.

The Southland girls basketball team went 18-10 and its season came to an end in a 55-40 loss to Lyle-Pacelli, who would go on to reach the Minnesota Class A Girls State Basketballl Tournament, in the Section 1A West semifinals. SOUTHLAND BASEBALL

The Rebels went 7-10 overall and their season came to an end when they dropped their Section 1A tournament opener 7-6 in 10 innings to Medford. The Rebels leaned on sophomore Chris Webber on the mound for much of the year and Southland also started two freshmen and an eighth-grader for much of the year.

SOUTHLAND SOFTBALL

The Rebels went 3-17 overall and their season came to an end in a 10-0 loss to Hayfield in the Section 1A West quarterfinals. The Rebels relied on senior Sam Emanuel and junior Kayla Swenson for leadership.

SOUTHLAND TRACK AND FIELD

Southland senior McKenzie Kirtz competed in her fourth and final Class A state track and field meet when she took seventh place in the 1600-meter run. Kirtz ran the race in a personal best time of 5:10.11 and she also competed in the 800. Southland senior Dominiq Bouska took seventh in the discus in his first appearance in the Class A state meet. Bouska's longest throw was 146 feet, 1 inch at state.

The Athletics finished 2-7 as they lost 91-58 to Mabel-Canton in the first round of the tournament. LP was led by senior quarterback Jordan Hart, who threw for 1,890 yards 19 TDs and 14 interceptions and junior running back Daniel Bollingberg, who ran for 658 yards and 8 TDs.

The Athletics finished 14-12 overall after they lost 25-21, 23-25, 25-16, 25-18 to Blooming Prairie in the Section 1A West quarterfinals.

PACELLI CROSS COUNTRY

Pacelli eighth-grader Kayla Christopherson made big strides in her second trip to the Class A state cross country meet. Christopherson, who also won the Section 1A title, earned All-State honors as she finished in 20th place with a time of 15:28. Christopherson had taken 62nd at state as a seventh-grader.

LYLE-PACELLI BOYS BASKETBALL

The Athletics finished the season at 19-9 overall after it lost to Blooming Prairie 80-62 in the Section 1A West semifinals. The Athletics were led by senior 1,000th-point scorer Jordan Hart, who averaged 14.9 points per game, and junior forward Noah Jiskra, who averaged 17.7 points per game.

LYLE-PACELLI GIRLS BASKETBALL

The Athletics made it to their first-ever Class A state tournament since the merger of Lyle and Pacelli and they were one shot shy of reaching the state championship game. LP, which finished 26-5 overall, lost to eventual state champ Ada-Borup 54-52 after Courtney Walter’s buzzer beating 3-pointer came up short. LP had led the semifinal game 45-35 with 9:11 left in the contest. LP will bring back plenty of firepower in Sarah Holtz, who averaged 19 points and 10 rebounds per game, Brooke Walter, who averaged 15 points per game, and Courtney Walter, who averaged 10 points per game. “Our mantra last year was unfinished business based on the section. We feel like we still have unfinished business, it’s just a different kind of unfinished business,” LP head coach Justin Morris said after the season. “We hope to get back to the state tournament and try and get it done.”

LYLE-PACELLI BASEBALL

The Athletics finished with a 16-6 overall record and their season came to an end when they lost 4-3 to Goodhue in a Section 1A West second place game. The Athletics had an extremely young roster as they went 1-14 overall and had their season end on a 16-3 loss to Glenville-Emmons. LP was led by eighth-grader Abby Bollingberg and sophomore Danielle Hinz.

Lyle-Pacelli junior Sarah Holtz took fourth in the high jump at the Class A state track and field meet. Holtz, who was competing in her second state meet, jumped a height of 5-4 to tie her with five other jumpers and she ended up taking fourth on a tie breaker. “It’s going to push me to work hard over the summer because I know I can get back here and do better,” Holtz said at state. “It’s really motivating.”

The Superlarks played in their third straight Class 9 man football title game and they captured their second straight state football title in dominant fashion. Grand Meadow, which finished 14-0 overall, beat Edgerton/Ellsworth 48-0 in the state title game and it outscored its opponents 240-6 in the postseason. GRAND MEADOW WRESTLING

The GMLOKS wrestling team had three representatives at the Class AA state meet — Wyatt Richardson, Blake Benson and Parker Hale. Richardson, a senior, finished in third place when he beat Wyatt Juhl of Big Lake 4-2. Benson and Hale weren't able to place.

The Cardinals went 1-8 overall and their season came to an end in a 61-14 loss to Spring Grove. The Cards were led by Southwest Minnesota State commit Jace Bunne, who had over 2,500 yards of offense and 22 TDs. Due to a lack of upperclassmen, LO will not field a varsity football team in 2015, but it plans on bringing the varsity team back in 2016.

The Cardinals went 2-22 overall and they had their season come to an end in a 67-28 loss to Goodhue in a Section 1A tournament opener. LO was led by Josh Royston.

Grand Meadow's Tyler Sloan finished tied for 42nd place in his first Class A state golf meet. Sloan had a twoday score of 168.

The Austin Bruins, despite losing a majority of a team that made the Robertson Cup finals from 2013-2014, defied some expectations to once again reach the championship series, this time at home. Unfortunately, the Bruins once again fell short when they lost to the Minnesota Wilderness. Here are some images that highlighted the Bruins 2014-15 season.
