Wednesday, June 30, 2010 AUSTIN SPORTS FOOTBALL The Packers won their first postseason in contest in years when they topped Winona 18-13 in the first round of the Section 1AAAA football tournament, but their season ended on a 29-8 loss to Northfield in the second round. “We would’ve liked to have more wins, but it was a great five months and there wouldn’t be anybody else I would want to be around for five months,” Austin head coach Tim Hermann said after the season. The Packers went 4-6 overall and their offense was boosted by the running of senior running back Jerrad Ryks, who ran for 1,288 yards (6.3 per carry), and 18 touchdowns, while catching 15 passes for 113 yards. Hermann resigned as head coach after the season and Austin graduated most of its core, so it will have a different look in 2010 as Matt Schmit, a former assistant, takes the helm.
VOLLEYBALL It was a tough year for the Packers as they went 3-16 and lost in the

first round of the playoffs to Faribault. Senior Bri Mayer led the Packers attack throughout the season. Austin will return a few key players next season, including setter Jenna Svoboda. “I think the prospects for Austin volleyball are still pretty good,” Austin head coach Darica Schneider said. “Look for Austin to come back, we’re not lying down.”
BOYS SOCCER
The Packers had their best season in school history as they made it to the Class ‘A’ state tournament for the first time ever, where they fell to Simley 2-1 on a late goal in the quarterfinals. Austin finished 14-6 overall in a year that saw 14 different players score goals. They graduate 14 seniors. “They’re a good group of kids,” Austin head coach Jens Levisen said of his departing players. “They’re all around good kids and Herald file photo not just good soccer players.
