FOOTBALL
Austin’s season may have ended in a 49-20 loss to eventual Class AAAAA state champ Owatonna in the Section 1AAAAA semifinals, but it was a breakthrough year for the Packers. Austin won more games than it had in its previous three seasons combined as it finished 5-5 overall. The Packers hit their stride down the stretch as they won their last three regular season games, including a 26-23 overtime win over Rochester Mayo, and they beat Faribault 42-7 in the postseason after losing to the Falcons 35-21 in the season opener.

Herald file photo Austin opened up its passing game as All-State second teamer Zach Wessels, a senior, racked up 744 yards receiving and eight TDs and senior Bret Lukes had 826 receiving yards and nine TDs. Sophomore running back Nate Conner racked up 863 rushing yards and nine TDs.
VOLLEYBALL
The Packers struggled throughout the year as they finished 3-24 overall. They had their season end in a three-game sweep at Rochester Century in the first round of the Section 1AAA tournament. Austin junior Mer Gach had 93 kills and 95 blocks for the Packers and sophomore Shayley Vesel had 50 kills and 109 set assists.

Austin missed out on the Section 1A finals by the slimmest of margins as it bowed out to Bryon 2-1 in the Section 1A semifinals.

Austin went 7-7-5 overall in a season that saw many new players brought up to the varsity squad. Austin junior Roel Torres provided most of the offense for the Packers throughout the season.
GIRLS SWIMMING AND DIVING
The Packers had five athletes compete in the Class A state swimming and diving meet in 2013. Austin senior Autumn Laury capped her Packer diving career with a sixth place finish at the state meet when she tallied a score of 303.20.
GIRLS SOCCER
Laury, who battled a back injury throughout the season, took third at state as a junior. The Austin 200-yard freestyle relay team of Merideth Fritz, Heather Johnson, Maddie Kinney and Mikayla Finney took 17th in the state prelims and missed out on the finals.
CROSS COUNTRY

BOYS BASKETBALL
Austin finished 6-16-3 overall as its season ended on a 5-1 loss to New Prague. The Packers were led by sophomore forwards Chloe Summerfield and Madison Overby.
The Packers made their third straight trip to the Class ‘AAA’ state basketball tournament and they took second for the second straight year after they lost 60-40 to De La Salle in the state title game. The Packers took on a new identity in 2014 as it relied on its three senior guards to control the pace. Zach Wessels, who averaged 13.7 points and 5.3 assists, Bret Lukes, who averaged 14 points, and Ajuda Nywesh, who averaged 14.4 points, took turns leading the team in scoring throughout the season. Austin finished the year at 28-4 overall and it wrapped up its third straight Big Nine title. “We went through a stretch in Austin in the mid-2000s where we weren’t that good,” Austin head coach Kris Fadness said after the season. “You wonder if you’re going to have your job back the next year. We found a system with our zone defense, we ran with it and it was successful and then we started getting players. Guys have just revitalized my career to now I feel pretty comfortable about where we’re at.” Wessels will play college basketball at the University of Sioux Falls, Nywesh will play at Lake Region State College in Devils Lake, N.D. and Lukes will play at Hamline University.
GYMNASTICS
Austin had three gymnasts in the top-five at the Class A state individual meet and the Packers placed fourth in the Class A state meet as a team. Austin senior Sela Fadness finished her Packer career on a high note as she won her second straight state all-around title with a career-best score of 38.7. “This was a great meet and a great day,” Fadness said. “I’m so glad things went the way they did.” Austin junior Abby Bickler took fourth in the all-around at state and freshman Maddie Mullenbach took fifth in the all-around. The Packers were hoping for a better placing at the team meet, but their score of 148.3 points was still the best score the team has ever put up in a state meet. “They’re a great team and a great group of girls. It’s too bad that I couldn’t have done a little more for them,” former Austin head coach Mark Raymond said after the season. “Expectations have been elevated and this happened to be the year that four teams were over 148.” Raymond resigned after the season ended as he has taken the position of principal at Triton Middle School.
GIRLS BASKETBALL

The Packers finished 8-16 overall as their season came to an end on a 59-57 loss at Byron in their Section 1AAA tournament opener. Austin was led by junior forward Mer Gach, who averaged 15.3 points and 8.5 rebounds per game and sophomore Shayley Vesel added 11.8 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.

DANCE
The Packer dance team finished in fourth place in the high kick division as it competed in its 12th straight Class ‘A’ state dance meet. Austin head coach Kayla Sellers, who used

to dance for the Packers, was in her first year at the helm and she was glad to get Austin back to state. “We couldn’t be more proud of what we did [at state],” Sellers said. “We put our absolute best performances of the season on the floor at state prelims and finals.”
WRESTLING
The Austin wrestling team failed to send a wrestler to the state meet for the second straight year. Austin’s Mitch Tebay took third at the Section 1AAA meet and Brandon Cotter, Eli Kaercher, Kole Igou and Braden Eggum
each took fourth.
BASEBALL
The Packers went 4-14 overall and their season came to an end in a 6-0 loss at Red Wing in their first season under head coach Chris Gogolewski. Austin won two of its last three games of the regular season. Austin was led by sophomore Alex Ciola, who hit .372 and senior outfielder Ethan Horstmann, who hit .365.
SOFTBALL
The Packers won their first postseason con-
test in a quite some time, but they saw things come to an end in a 5-1 loss to Winona in a Section 1AAA elimination game. Austin finished 5-16 overall. Austin senior Abbey Ball had an ERA of 4.62 and she hit .414 with 5 homers, 6 doubles and 12 RBIs. Austin head softball coach Cindy Owen resigned after the season.
GOLF
Neither of the golf teams sent any golfers to the Class AAA state meet. The Austin boys were led by sophomores James Snee and Ethan Morey. AUSTIN DAILY HERALD

BOYS TENNIS
The Austin boys tennis team finished 5-11 overall and its season came to an end in a 6-1 loss to Red Wing in its Section 1AA tournament opener.

The Packers had three qualifiers at the Class AA state track and field meet. Austin senior Andrew Baker finished his career on a strong note as he ran a career best time of 1:57.06 in the 800-meter run preliminaries. Baker finished 10th in the prelims and was about a half a second from reaching the state finals. Baker won Big Nine titles in the 800-meter run and the 1600-meter run. Austin eighth-grader Paiton Schwab ran in her first ever state track and field meet as she finished 17th in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:25.04. Schwab won a Big Nine title in the 1600-meter run. Austin junior Carolyn Hackel competed in her third career state track and field meet, but a sprained ankle slowed her down as she finished 23rd with a distance of 15 feet, 9 inches in the long jump. Hackel had broken a 31-year old AHS record with a jump of 17-4.75 in the Section 1AA meet. It was Hackel’s first time competing at long jump in state as she had previously gone to state in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Hackel won a Big Nine title in the long jump. Austin boys head track and field coach Tony Einertson resigned after the season.

The Awesome Blossoms were hit by a rash of injuries at the worst time possible as their season ended on a loss to Faribault Bethlehem Academy in the Section 1A title game for the second straight year. BP, which finished the year 10-1 overall, was missing a few starters to injury when it lost 28-20 to FBA in the section title game. BP was led by a trio of juniors in quarterback John Rumpza, who threw for 2,778 yards, 30 TDs and 13 interceptions, wide receiver Cole Sunde, who had 886 receiving yards and 12 TDs, and running back Jake Decker, who had 1,139 total yards and 17 TDs.

The Awesome Blossoms went 22-8 overall, but their season came to an end in a 25-22, 25-16, 25-11 loss to Faribault Bethlehem Academy in the Section 1A West Division semifinals. BP was led by junior setter Madison Worke, who has 1,953 career set assists, and junior hitter Taylor Hagen, who had 329 kills and 174 blocks in 2013.
CROSS COUNTRY

The Awesome Blossoms saw a quality season come to an end a little early as they were knocked off by Faribault Bethlehem Academy 56-30 in the Section 1A West semifinals. The Blossoms finished the season 15-10 overall. BP was led by John Rumpza, who averaged 20.5 points, 12.6 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.5 blocks per game. Rumpza, who will be a senior this fall, is BP’s all-time leading scorer.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Blooming Prairie put together one of its best postseason runs in years, but it fell short to Goodhue 54-42 in the Section 1A West title game. The Awesome Blossoms finished 19-8 overall and they knocked off unbeaten Lyle-Pacelli to get to the subsection title game. The Blossoms were led by junior center Taylor Hagen, who averaged 15.6 points, 8.4 rebounds and 3.3 blocks per game. Hagen has committed to Division I University of Northern Iowa and she is BP’s all-time leading scorer. BP junior Madison Worke averaged 12.3 points and 4.6 rebounds. AUSTIN DAILY HERALD

BP, which won the Class A title in 2013, had a much younger team in 2014 as it finished 10-10 overall. BP was led by freshman Bria Baldwin, who it .356 with 16 RBIs and junior Tessa Ivers, who hit .388 with 13 stolen bases.

Blooming Prairie freshman Tommy Braaten made his first trip to the Class A state golf meet count as he finished in 14th place with a score of 163. “The first round I probably played my best round of golf I’ve played this year,” Braaten said. “I hit the ball real good and I was methodically thinking my way around the course. My second round wasn’t as good.” BP senior Victor Peterson took 31st with a score of 170 in his second meet. BP freshman Taylor Christensen took 40th place with a score of 195 in her first state meet.

Hayfield senior Mason Moreno finished in second place at 132 pounds at the Class A state wrestling meet. Moreno lost the title match 6-4 to Quentin Berris of Kimball Area. Moreno finished the season with a 33-2 overall record.

BOYS BASKETBALL
The Vikings went 21-6 overall, but their season ended in a 54-52 loss in OT to Cannon Falls in the Section 1AA West semifinals. Hayfield was led by senior Cole Kruger, who averaged 16.8 points, 6.9 assists, 6.7 rebounds and 2.6 steals per game. Kruger, who has committed to Upper Iowa, is first in Hayfield High School history in career assists (533) and steals (262), and he is second in scoring (1,746 points). Hayfield senior Jeremy Stuart averaged 12.2 points and 6.2 rebounds. The Vikings had eight seniors on the roster.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
The Vikings, who went 21-6 overall, finished their season on a strong note, but it wasn't enough in a 60-58 loss to eventual Class AA state runner-up Kenyon-Wanamingo in the Section 1AA West finals. Carpentier threw a distance of 1589. “Hopefully I can come back next year,” Carpentier said. “I’ve got my eyes on shot put and hopefully discus can go well too.” Carpentier took 11th in the shot put at state with a distance of 46-1.50.

Pacelli seventh-grader Kayla Christopherson made it to the Class A state cross country meet and she didn’t disappoint. Christopherson took 62nd place out of 174 runners with a time of 16:02.4, a time that was 21 seconds faster than her state qualifying time.

LP finished 3-9 overall and its season ended in a 7-2 loss to Southland in a Section 1A West play-in game. LP was led by freshman pitcher Bethany Strouf, who had a 4.50 ERA and sophomore outfielder Courtney Walter, who hit .559.
GOLF
The Athletics didn’t qualify any golfers for the Class A state meet. Thomas Marx led the boys team at the Section 1A meet and Maggie Leif was the lone golfer for the LP girls.

Southland, which finished 3-7 overall, came on strong near the end of the season as they won two of their last three games, including a 47-20 upset win over No. 2 seeded Rushford-Peterson in their playoff opener. Sophomore Jackson Koenigs had 89 tackles, six sacks and two fumble recoveries for Southland.

Continued from 15 The Rebels finished the season 18-5 overall and a lack of run scoring hurt them in all of their losses. Southland senior Lukas Anderson went 4-2 with an ERA of 0.32 and he hit .390. Southland senior Taylar Schwartz hit .423 and he had an ERA of 1.39.
GOLF
Southland didn't have any golfers qualify for the Class A state meet. The Rebel boys were led by Brandon Bergene and Thomas Bottema at the Section 1A meet.

The Cardinals went 3-6 overall as their season came to an end on a 47-14 loss to Grand Meadow in their Section 1 tournament opener. LO senior Lucas Grass racked up 120 tackles and senior Nate Bunne had 13 TDs.

The Cardinals finished 12-12 overall and their season came to an end in a 75-40 loss to Blooming Prairie. LO was led by senior Becca Bunne, who averaged 14.8 points, 11.2 rebounds, 6.4 assists and 5.2 steals per game.

Kaitlin Kling, a senior for GMLO, took 27th place at the Class A state meet with a twoday score of 186.

Grand Superlarks meadow FOOTBALL
The Superlarks made school history when they won Grand Meadow's first nine man state football title with a 28-6 win over Underwood in the title game. "I’m so proud of those guys," GM head coach Gary Sloan said after the win. "We showed that you don’t have to have a ton of upper classmen. You’ve got to work hard and get better every day and we’ve improved so much from the beginning of the season.” Sloan picked up his 150th career win in the state title victory.
GM, which was the No. 2 seeded team in Section 1 and unranked in the final regular season poll, caught fire at the right time as it won all of its playoff contests by at least 14 points. The Larks, who finished second in state in 2012, were led by senior quarterback Trenton Bleifus, who threw for 1,524 yards with 15 TDs and six interceptions and he ran for 718 yards and 20 TDs. GM junior Landon Jacobson ran for 1,900 yards with 29 TDs and he racked up 163 tackles and seven sacks on defense.

Grand Meadow finished 11-15 overall and its season came to an end on a 67-21 loss to Lyle-Pacelli in its Section 1A West tournament opener. The Larks were led by sophomore Rio Landers, who averaged 15.9 points and 7.6 rebounds.
WRESTLING
Wyatt Richardson, a Grand Meadow junior, took third place at 195 pounds at the Class A state wrestling meet while representing GMLOK. Richardson, who went 29-5 overall, lost his final match when he was pinned with eight seconds left in the the first period against Tyler Patron of New York Mills.
