NEW SWIMSUIT MODELS
THANKS TO YOU I
F YOU HAD TO VOTE ON THE MOST IMPORTANT INNOVATION OF THE PAST CENTURY, YOU MIGHT SAY IT’S BEEN THE INTERNET. WHILE THERE ARE MANY TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES ONE COULD CONSIDER, IT’S HARD TO ARGUE THE FARREACHING IMPACT THE WEB HAS HAD ON ALL OF OUR LIVES. Of course, the most striking example of this invention is the incredible connectivity that it creates among people. Its power is so ubiquitous that it’s helped topple dictators and change societies. It’s been the lynch pin of new business approaches and presidential elections. Indeed, it’s literally become woven into every aspect of our lives. But beyond its ability to bring us together, the web has extraordinary reach and immediate impact. A thought, an idea, an image or an emotion can be shared instantly, and on a global-scale. This new reality is staggering and challenges each of us to consider our significant responsibilities while using this amazing tool. Take for example our ever popular swimsuit edition this month. In our ongoing effort to develop a dialogue with our readers, we decided to add a twist to this year’s issue. We asked you to nominate and vote on local Austinites who you thought deserved to be featured in the magazine. All using the web.
By employing our Facebook page, we created a “wiki” forum that went completely viral within days. Both the volume of votes and your responsiveness were astounding, not to mention the quality of your choices. In fact, as you’ll see in the following pages, it’s pretty hard to tell the amateurs from the pros. So, job well done!! Of course without the Internet, this kind of digital conversation would have been virtually impossible. And the nature of the web is what helped it work so well. We hope you enjoy this new and improved swimsuit issue that wouldn’t have been possible without technology and you. When you see the winners looking great in these photos, be sure to take a moment and congratulate yourself for helping get them in the magazine. You can be sure that we’ll continue to engage in a conversation with you whenever we can. AFM is your magazine and we want to hear from you often, so we can make our dialogue as rich and reflective as it can possibly be. Keep Austin Fit,

Dr. Rasmussen provides on-site supervision for a team of highly-skilled aestheticians who work with him to help you achieve youthful, healthy skin that reflects your fitness lifestyle. “It’s important for you to not only look good but to achieve optimum skin health,” Dr. Rasmussen says. “At eŌs, we work with you to select the services that are right for your skin type and lifestyle. Protection from the sun is one of the most important ways to prevent premature aging throughout your life and is even more important when you’re active outdoors.” He advises healthy athletes to think about the following:
eŌs Dermatology is a natural fit for those who want healthy skin to complement healthy bodies. Call 512.482.9344 for a complimentary med spa consultation.
Protection Get a full-body skin exam every year to identify and treat potential skin cancers and wear sunscreen every day. Choose the correct product for your skin type and cover all exposed surfaces. Let the eŌs experts help you choose effective, medical-grade products that really work. Correction If you already have skin damage, we can help. eŌs offers a full range of rejuvenating treatments from chemical peels to photofacial resurfacing to laser treatments. These can remove skin blemishes, including freckles and brown spots.
Smooth Skin Many fitness enthusiasts shave almost every day for comfort and speed while exercising. Laser hair removal permanently reduces unwanted hair while eliminating the discomfort of daily shaving. A Healthy Glow Blocking sun damage is essential to good skin health, but it’s hard to be healthy and fit and look pale. If you want a tan to show off your healthy body, get it the safe way with a sunless airbrush tan. It gives you a great, healthy tan without exposure to and damage from ultraviolet rays.

THE BENEFIT OF
STRETCH CORDS A SWIMMER AND TRIATHLETE’S SECRET WEAPON BY PATRICK EVOE, PROFESSIONAL TRIATHLETE PHOTO BY BRIAN FITZSIMMONS
I
f you want to improve your swimming strength, then you need a way to supplement your swim workouts in a time-effective way to work your swimming muscles in a manner that’s transferable to the water. The answer is stretch cords!
Tails Wagging We keep your pets’ tails wagging! Specializing in exercising high energy dogs, we offer dog walks, potty breaks, playtime exercise and even bike rides!
Sniff us out today!
Since my training buddy taught me how to properly perform stretch cord routines, I’ve noticed a significant difference in my swimming. The cords are long sections of rubber tubing with handles or swimming paddles attached at one end and a nylon loop on the other to allow you to fasten them to a fixed object. You will want to purchase swimming-specific cords because they have longer tubing than standard cords. Swimming stretch

cords can be purchased at swimming and triathlon stores or online and are available with different levels of resistance. It’s better to start easier/lighter so you can maintain proper form. A quick Internet search will point you to many resources demonstrating proper technique using your cords. If you need more convincing, my friend coaches a triathlete who was called to serve a tour in Iraq last year. He spent six
months on a base without seeing any more water than a shower. He brought his stretch cords with him and performed sessions every day, hooking them to the base’s blast wall. He went through several sets of cords and built up to 30 minutes straight at a time. Believe it or not, when he came home, after not seeing the pool for more than six months, he was only one second off of his all-time fastest 100-yard swim. If he can do it, so can you.

THE BENEFIT OF STRE TCH CORDS • FIT 3 • 55
RUN + BIKE + SWIM BICYCLES & TRIKKES
WHY USE STRETCH CORDS 1 Time Effective | Your stretch cord routine doesn’t have to take long — you’ll see some benefits by using them as little as five minutes. If you have 10 to 20 minutes, then you’ll have more than enough time to be effective. Then, if you can get in one to four times each week, you’re on your way to being a stronger swimmer.

2 Specificity | By using stretch cords, you’ll be building your strength specific to the swimming movements, fi ring the muscles in the proper manner and pattern, and thus reinforcing your swimming muscle memory. You may think that you can get the same strength benefits from trips to the gym. Resistance training will help your strength, but no exercise requires movements completely transferable to swimming. You would need a whole gym session with dozens of exercises to hit all of your swimming muscles. Stretch cords help you efficiently target the required muscles, reducing time while increasing performance. 3 Home or Gym | The cords themselves are small, portable and can be wrapped to any secure object. You can make your routine part of your gym or core session or hook them up to a banister and knock out your sets in front of the TV. Portability also makes them great for travel, so you don't have to stress about fi nding a lap pool on your vacation.

4 Substitute Session | If you’re short on time and can’t squeeze in your swim, a quick session on the cords will help to limit the adverse affect of spending a day out of the water. On the fl ip side, if you do get your swim in and are looking for the overload effect of a double swim day, instead of trying to fi nd time to go to the pool for a second time that day, work with your cords for 20 to 30 minutes and your muscles will feel like you had two swim sessions. 5 Stability and Injury Prevention | An additional benefit to using stretch cords is that if you perform the movements with proper technique, then you will hold your form in the pool better and decrease the likelihood of injury. There are also several exercises specific to the rotator cuff, that if performed properly, can strengthen the stabilizers and help prevent “swimmer’s shoulder.” 6 Race Warm-up | With triathlons getting more crowded these days, more and more races do not allow athletes to get in the water before the swim-start to warm up. If you have your cords with you, either in the hotel before you leave, or right in transition, hook them up and cycle through a few sets. You will warm-up your swimming muscles and get your muscles into the proper fi ring pattern before you jump in the water. If you hit a few short and easy sets and then go for a jog to get your cardiovascular system ready, you’ll be in much better shape when the start gun fi res than if you jump in the water cold.

TIPS FOR USING CORDS 1 Vary up the Routine and Exercises | Start with 10 to 20 reps. You can do double-arm, moving both at the same time; more like a butterfly stroke. Then try single arm, moving your right, then left, back and forth like a freestyle stroke. After you’ve built up strength and repetitions, then you can start shortening the rest or linking routines for sets of time. You can also change the direction you face to work on your triceps strength or deltoids. 2 Proper Technique | The most important part of your stretch cord session is to make sure you’re using text-book stroke technique. It’s hard to analyze your own stroke in the water, but with the cords, you can look in a mirror to ensure you're using proper form. Those muscle memory gains will quickly transfer into the pool. 3 Muscular Endurance | As you build up your sessions with the cords, try incorporating sessions specifically to work your muscular endurance. To do this, set the clock and build up the amount of time you can go while maintaining perfect form. If your form collapses, then you need to stop. This will help you in the latter portions of a race when your arms and lats feel like cinder blocks in the water. afm

MONICA’S THOUGHTS
I
I really had no expectations for this workout at Pure Barre. I went in with an open mind and fairly sore legs from my workout the day before. Upon walking into their studio off Bee Caves Road, I was greeted with many smiling faces and a group of enthusiastic ladies who seemed excited to be training with me. The Pure Barre facility is extremely clean and very cozy…both major priorities for me. There are even some cute items to purchase should someone come straight from work or forget their fitness apparel altogether. 66 • MAY 2011 • AUSTINFITMAGA ZINE.COM

The class started off and moved pretty quickly — there were lots of body parts to cover in the hour-long class. Upper body was first and was just challenging enough to feel a great burn throughout my entire chest, arms and shoulders. Even though my core wasn’t targeted just yet, I was definitely feeling the movements there too. The owner and class instructor, Rashanna, moved through all the exercises with ease and grace. She was such an expert, it seemed like she could do the entire workout in her sleep!
After we finished the upper body exercises, we progressed onto legs. Oh boy, this was a challenge. In fact, when I go back, I will not train legs so hard the day before. This part of the workout was extremely challenging and the burn was pretty incredible. I could feel it throughout my quads, my glutes and even in my hamstrings, too. By the end, I was really starting to sense everything in my core, which I knew was coming after the upper body elements. Overall, I feel this workout is the perfect blend of lengthening, strengthening and
stretching to complement other high-impact workouts I’m currently doing. The energy at Pure Barre was infectious, energetic and the motivation from everyone was very inspiring. I loved this workout and have already sent several clients over to check the class out. I can tell you I’m definitely getting in there to torture myself (in a good way) again. Beginners to advanced exercisers will benefit and enjoy Pure Barre, I guarantee it! Special thanks to Hair Angel for hair design (hairangel.net)

ATHING SUIT SEASON B IS DEFINITELY
UPON US. THE ONLY REASON I KNOW THIS IS BECAUSE EVERY WOMAN I BUMP INTO REFERS TO BIKINI SEASON AS IF IT WERE THE SUPER BOWL, THE ROYAL WEDDING OR AN ALIEN ENCOUNTER. IF YOU DIDN’T ALREADY KNOW, IT’S A REALLY BIG DEAL. Between the moans and groans of determining what’s in fashion, I hear furious debates about how to mix and match tops and bottoms and reminders to always leave your underwear on while trying on new bathing suits. Who knew there was so much fanfare surrounding a simple piece of clothing? Let’s just say I’m not envious of the responsibilities women have in this regard — namely, the pressure to be cute, stylish and relevant every summer. For men, it’s always been pretty simple…at least until recently. Case in point: I’ve lately heard growls and grumblings from lots of American men that the Europeans are trying to mess up our swimsuits. Most Americans were not too enchanted when the “Euro boy short” swim trunks started making their way to the lovely beaches and pools of this great nation. In fact, you may be familiar with the derogatory terms used to describe them, such as “nutters,” “banana hammocks” or most often just “ew.” Even

women were unimpressed by the graphic nature of these swimsuits. Most women like a nice chest, arms, chiseled face and even great buns. There’s just something far too graphic about the front area of these suits that leaves most innocent bystanders grimacing. I don’t believe it’s that we’re narrowminded or unwilling to change. In my opinion, we’ve actually been very acquiescent when it comes to recent Euro trends. If you’ve been in Austin for some time you know that we love our big trucks and SUV’s, however, we’ve slowly been adapting to Mini Coopers, Smart Cars and the return of the Fiat. Sure, we giggle when we see them, but we realize they’re here to stay. Have fun driving your eggs around town I always say. We’ve also been quite tolerant of those ridiculous Euro male hairstyles. Soccer star David Beckham is single-handedly responsible for this mess. I reluctantly watched this trend take hold the youth of America, but now I’m pretty comfortable
with it. That said, it still amazes me that Euro men are willing to spend more on hair products than on dental care, but to each his own. If you were downtown at all during SXSW you likely saw the skinny jeans craze, too (or as the Brits like to call them, trousers). Again, it’s another male fashion trend that’s gradually made its way across America. I could certainly do without the moose knuckle it makes in the front, but it’s a fad influenced by music, so I’m willing to let it slide. Overall, I feel as Americans we’re pretty willing to bend, adapt and accept. However, I will not and cannot move forward with the new Euro swimwear for men. I’m putting my foot down on this one. It’s unacceptable and downright offensive. If you go by the name Bond, James Bond, or The Talented Mr. Ripley, then you get a free pass. Otherwise give me my baggy surf shorts for summer 2011 and keep the boy shorts where they belong.
