Patients admitted to Gilchrist are assigned a team of professionals who will provide them with the support they need, giving caregivers the confidence that a loved one is well and ably cared for. Each patient has access to a nurse, social worker, hospice aide, chaplain and volunteers, who work with both Gilchrist’s medical directors and the patient’s own doctor to address the unique needs of both patient and family. After the death of a loved one, Gilchrist’s bereavement staff reaches out to caregivers and other family members to offer grief support through counseling, memorial services, support groups and correspondence.

While more than three-fourths of all patients are cared for at home or in their current residential facilities, Gilchrist also offers round-the-clock care at its 34-room inpatient facility, Gilchrist Center, for patients whose pain and symptoms cannot be brought under control elsewhere. The facility, located in Towson, provides a serene, home-like setting where patients approaching the end of life can receive the intensive care they need, surrounded by their loved ones.

PERKS OF GRANDPARENTING

ost grandparents agree with the bumper sticker that says, “If I’d have known grandchildren were so much fun, I would have had them first!”

The joys of being a grandparent begin with the knowledge that we have secured our future and include seeing our children experience the thrill that we had when they were born. Other joys include playing with a child and then handing her back to her parents to get a fresh diaper or a meal. We get the fun parts; the parents get more of the daily tasks.

This is a serious perk, because it gives the grandparents the opportunity to bond without too many concerns about discipline, schedules or other mundane matters. The trick is to focus on the child, engaging each one according to his or her personality, age and interests. Forget long conversations or lectures and forego lots of questions that give you monosyllabic answers. Get down on the floor, literally and figuratively, and play with darlings. Your own childhood

memories will come back to you and you’ll feel genuinely bonded with the little ones.

We have the time and patience to read a book and, when the toddler says, “Again,” we can read it once more. Is there anyone other than a grandparent who doesn’t flinch when the four-year-old brings a pile of five books and commands, “Read all of them.”?

In addition to reading, we can play marbles, Chutes and Ladders and, as the children get older, Monopoly, Careers and Trivial Pursuit. We actually can remind the youngsters that there are forms of entertainment that don’t require a computer or other handheld device!

When the grandchildren hit their teens, grandparents have a very important role to play. Remember, these are the years when kids would rather talk to anyone but their parents! All those childhood games, books and trips will pay off as your grandchildren feel comfortable turning to you with issues they would never discuss with other adults.

It’s probably easier to help them with their driving hours, too, as someone who is a generation removed and has more tolerance for mistakes.

All these perks and joys add up to a great opportunity to share life lessons and family history and lore. Kids love hearing stories about “the olden days,” going all the way back to the 1950’s, which they consider ancient history! They’re astounded to hear that you could get a bottle (no cans back then) of soda for six cents and a postage stamp for four. It’s hard for them to believe that we were alive at the time of the first moon landing and they treasure hearing from someone who saw and heard a man take the very first step on the moon. We have much to hand over to the younger generation and if we put it in the context of shared fun and ongoing connections, they will receive it and hand it over to the next generation – and that’s the greatest perk of all!

1/4 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 cup margarine

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 1/4 cups white sugar

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

2 eggs 1 cup canned pumpkin 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon ground cloves 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

DIRECTIONS

1 Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

3 In another bowl combine flour, soda, baking powder,

2 Put softened cheese, butter, and sugar in mixing bowl. Cream together well. Beat in eggs one at a time until blended. Mix in pumpkin.

4 Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 60-70 minutes until inserted toothpick comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes in pan. Remove to rack to finish cooling.

Time Does Not Always Heal All Wounds

fter nearly 30 surgeries and other procedures on her left leg, Darcel Heath-Jackson still had a wound that wouldn’t heal, and she was desperate for an answer.

However, they are more likely to happen among the elderly and people with diabetes, vascular disease, cancer, radiation burns and bone infections,” says Alan Davis, M.D., F.A.C.S., medical director of the Center for Wound Care at Northwest Hospital and HBOT. Approximately five million Americans live with these kinds of wounds.

“HBOT is a treatment in which a patient breathes 100 percent oxygen at higher than normal atmospheric pressure inside a sealed chamber,” explains Davis. “That

Your head is probably spinning as you ask yourself, “Which community is for me?” Often, the need is driven by an interested senior or a concerned family member. In the past, conversations over the water cooler were centered on duplicate concerns that your colleagues had about their Mom and Dad. If you are 65 or older, you may have heard your friends at the senior center state that they were leaving their homes for a local retirement community. Either way, you have now crossed into unchartered waters. It is also very universal to feel extremely overwhelmed by the very mention of this emotional journey.

It starts with a decision made with your eyes wide open and your mind aware of all of the choices there are. Why waste time exploring “retirement communities” that are not designed for you or your loved one. Let’s start with that, shall we…

Independent Living is enjoying all of the freedom of your own apartment and all of the additional socialization and security you deserve. Gosh, who really wants to be cleaning out the gutters or shoveling snow?

Often, when lack of transportation becomes a concern, Independent Living can add vitality to your life. As you

If the tour lingers, ask to have lunch or dinner. Food is an important part of our lives and it should be nutritious and wonderful!

Although care and comfort are paramount, finances are what they are. We all know what we can or cannot afford. Be upfront. Most communities in one geographical area are all competitively priced. If one is lower by a substantial sum, care will suffer.

It is usually an indicator of a low census, recent takeover or management change.

Financially, usually a community is either private pay or accepts a Medicaid waiver. Do your homework. Many retirement communities are facing financial challenges that will affect the care you or your loved one receives. After all, you have almost completed this journey. Let’s not do it twice!

If I had to give you any advice, it could be in one sentence. Most of all, it is about being educated, gathering information and knowing, deep down inside, that it feels like home!

While adult day programs can be a wonderful help, Dr. Lafferman advises that adult children try to visit a center in person before they entrust a loved one there.

Before you decide that a nursing home is the right solution, there are other things you can consider to keep your loved ones in their own homes for a longer time.

“Although an elder loved one needs supervision, his or her dignity must always be preserved,” says Dr. Lafferman. In addition, he explains that caregivers should check to see if there are medical professionals on site, and if there are different therapies for loved ones to engage in.

Dr. Lafferman explains, “Levindale’s programs have group and individual therapy sessions in a stimulating environment.

In addition, participants can reminisce with people their own age, take part in activities designed to renew their enthusiasm for life and be in their own homes in the evening.”

According to the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry, nearly 20 percent of those who are 55 years and older have mental health disorders that are not part of normal aging. Some of the most common are anxiety, severe memory loss and/or mood disorders.

All too often, mental health illnesses are underreported.

Many elders think that depression is a normal part of aging, but it is not. “As people get older, their health needs become more complicated,” says Dr. Lafferman. “Medical problems, such as high blood pressure and arthritis, are common and can mask the emotional challenges that the elderly face, causing those problems to remain hidden until they have reached a critical stage.”

Some symptoms of a mental health decline, which may indicate a need for a day program or a mental health evaluation, are: • A change in personality • A decline in memory

• Unexplained physical illnesses

• Isolation from friends and family

• Loss of function

• Excessive feelings of guilt and/or hopelessness

• Loss of interest in personal hygiene

• Frequent crying

• Irritability

• Sleep problems

• Anxiety

• Changes in appetite

The physical building should also be well lit with bright colors, cater to the physically challenged and have a staff that is attentive to the participants who are already there.

When a loved one is experiencing emotional issues, it can also affect the whole family, so giving caregivers a break during the day is an important element when deciding if an adult day program can be helpful.

Parents and grandparents are often referred to as the Greatest Generation. They should be treated as such in their golden years.
