Austin Mckiel 2013

This is a collection of my work throughout my studio experience thus far. This shows my designs aim to be highly sustainable and provide an answer for every question within the project. It is through looking at what already exists that we find the future. I used a combination of Autocad, Autodesk Revit, Trimble Sketch Up, and sketching to assembly all the project in this portfolio. The Book itself used Adobe Indesign as a way to organize the projects.

The Community Connection In 1948 downtown Dallas became split off from its night life center ( Deep Ellum) with the creation of Interstate 45. This has resulted in a divided income area, and culture. The Community Connection is the solution to this monumental problem in Dallas. The key parts to making the connection are inverting the program elements of the two sides to benefit, creating a fun and inviting area which people from the community and surrounding areas to enjoy. While assessing the needs the influences evolved to inverting the ribbon of downtown, and creating a green hill for people to use in the concrete realm of downtown.

66 Ground The historic Route 66 has been forgotten, most people don’t even understand what an important role this road played in shaping the country. This project takes the themes of Route 66 such as travel, oddies, and fun and creates a camp which will surely be a trip to remember. The camp is divided into 3 main areas the town located at the corner ( see on this page), the camp ground and the cabin camp across from the new road.

The Campground is a series of pavilions which have the well knowRoute 66 butterfly roof. A lot of basic forms created the large scale park. The Project is divided into a city center on the top and a isolated cabin on the bottom. ( See picture below)

Safety Orange Safety Orange is all about a inflatable solution for a man who has been injured working on a job site. This inflatable has the construction orange painted on it and functions as a construction trailer for contractors to meet. Since the structure is an inflatable it acts as a sign signaling the start and end of a project. This trailer is more versatile than the normal construction trailer due to it ability to change shapes based on the need of the project.

The Figure & The Ground Figure Ground was one of the first projects I took on in studio, it was a study into the binary relationships that exist in architecture. This particular project created an interest of urban planning in a design. It has been used extensively in every project. The picture to the right shows a series of homes at the top, accompanied by large green space with structures, and a city at the bottom. Figure Ground diagrams are very important to the design process.

Floating Living Floating Living looked at the idea of mobile structures and disaster evasion. This house is designed for a man who works in the business district in New Orleans and creates a place for him and his family to experience the outdoors with comfort. This project looks at sun patterns and lush green walls to allow maximum sustainability. The lower level is public space leaving the upper two levels for private living.

Parts & Mechanics Parts and Mechanics was a semester long look at the other side of drafting how to design and create parts. This time was spent learning how to use the computers precision to create parts then assemble them into a file that could be sent out to be made. To the right there is a sectional of a motor that I created which really shows the other outlets in the professional world.

Adult Day Care

More and more today Adult Day Care and assistive living centers pop up on every corner. The project looks at a place where you can leave your elderly family members during the day while you do errands and work, so they can hang out and be watched. The center is two stories, the main floor is for the participants and the upper deck allows for gardening and outside activity. The center has large windows to allow light in to the building. The project is self sustainable with the use of solar, wind and efficient materials. This project provides senior with a happy, social place to hang out and be their selves.

Art For The Masses This insulation was created for a local elementary school. The students wanted a place to show work and let the public see what the students have been working on all year. There are five main wood trusses to represent the grades of the school as well as metal rods that run through the trusses to allow art to be hung. This whole installation would move up and down on a pulley and allow art to be changed out with ease. The shape of the trusses reflect the change in elevations between the lobby.

Drawing & Sculpture Drawing is a hobby of mine in which I take part in all the time. Whether it is building concepts or just a drawing of something I have seen that day it is always relaxing to draw. I also create art through metal wire sculpture. I find the metal wire sculpture allows me to look at the fluid motion of a project.

Adaptation Even now 8 years after hurricane Katrina, New Orleans has still not recovered. The worse of the damage was done to the Lower 9th Ward and many have worked to revive the area. Make It Right ( Brad Pitt) has worked to rebuild the Lower 9th with famous architects this has helped the area recover but it was not enough. Our studio looked at the Lower 9th and found the area with the most need and created sustainable homes for these people to come back to. Adaptation is designed using influences from the ocean to stop water and take systems that work in the wild waters of the Gulf and apply them to a home.
