Soon, treatment evolved into Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART), which relied on a “cocktail of drugs to target different aspects of the virus.
“The new lower-dose combination medications allowed people to live healthier, more active lives.
Over the past three decades, we have learned a tremendous amount about HIV. But after all these years, are we any closer to a cure? Have we been able to reduce the spread of HIV? And, have our old misconceptions and biases simply been replaced with new ones?
The term AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) was officially introduced in 1982, but it would be a few more years befire the virus was officially named: HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus).
The Game Changer
The new century brought us new technologies and drug formulations. Doctors could select drugs and combinations based on the strain of the virus, and the combinations reduced the burden on the patient. Unlike the high doses of AZT, the new lower-dose combination of medications allowed people to live healthier, more active lives.
Of all the viruses and diseases we have had to face over the centuries, perhaps none have baffled us, challenged us and strengthened us as much as HIV and AIDS. When AIDS first appeared as a mysterious illness in a handful of homosexual men in the early 80s, it was feared (people with HIV were shunned) and organizations that tried to help were picketed and harassed. Now, HIV has all but vanished from the public eye as new medications help people diagnosed with HIV live normal, healthy lives.
In 1981, a cluster of homosexual men came down with rare forms of pneumonia and skin cancer. It was soon discovered that these “opportunistic infections—illnesses that take advantage of a weak immune system—were part of a mysterious underlying disease that affected only certain populations.

The Fighting Chance
As scientists searched for an HIV treatment, interest was renewed in an antiretroviral drug developed in the 1960s called Azidothymidine (AZT), also called zidovudine, which is a drug that is used to delay the development of AIDS in patients who are infected with HIV. After promising trials, the drug was approved for use in record time and the effects were clear: No longer were people dying from opportunistic infections. However, the cost and side effects of the drug were severe enough that it barely seemed better than the disease. “We saw anemia, neuropathy, wasting away,â€? Dr.Wright explains.“When other people started to see that, especially people who weren’t sick yet, they didn’t want to take the drug.â€? Over the next few years, the FDA approved a steady stream of other drugs designed to combat opportunistic infections. They also approved using AZT to prevent transmission from mother to child. But the treatments were limited. “We got pretty good at treating opportunistic infections, but we HMHR´X HS E KSSH NSF EX MQTEGXMRK ,-: MXWIPJ %X ½VWX %>8 [SYPH [SVO FYX after several months, the virus would become resistant,â€? says Dr. Wright.
To many people who study HIV, it seems the epidemic was a perfect storm of different issues colliding. The virus itself has unique properties, making it hard to combat. It hides in our immune systems, lying dormant for years. HIV also replicates quickly and mutates easily, making effective treatments harder XS ½RH 8S XLMW HE] XLIWI TVSTIVXMIW EPWS QEOI HIZIPSTMRK E ZEGGMRI RIEVP] impossible. In addition, because HIV is spread primarily through sexual contact, it has been an uphill battle to educate people. In many cultures around the world, including the United States, talking about sex can be uncomfortable or taboo. Since HIV disproportionately affects homosexual men and other already stigmatized populations—such as intravenous drug users or people in the prison system—negative opinions about HIV-positive people continue to exist. While our current treatments offer hope to millions of people, they can be a double-edged sword. As the visibility of HIV decreases in the public eye, fewer people—especially in the younger generations—remember the danger it still poses. Over the past few years, nearly 40 percent of new infections occurred in people under the age of 29. And an estimated 60 percent of people infected with HIV do not know their status.
The New Struggle
While older stigmas about how one can contract HIV may have been cleared up, doctors and HIV prevention specialists now face a new set of misconceptions, primarily that HIV can be cured with just a pill. “The biggest issue that we wrestle with now is that people have to be treated for a lifetime,â€? Dr. Wright explains. “It’s understanding that you are going to be on medications for an MRHI½RMXI TIVMSH SJ XMQI ERH MJ ]SY WXST XLI QIHMGEXMSRW EX WSQI TSMRX XLI virus is going to come back.â€?
In addition to new drugs for treating HIV, government and RSR TVS½X EKIRGMIW WXEVXIH XS JSGYW SR TVIZIRXMSR ERH education strategies. In 2010, the Obama administration released the National HIV/AIDS Strategy, which proposed a new goal: to create an AIDS-free generation. HIV and AIDS organizations are now working on three fronts to ½KLX XLI ITMHIQMG 1) Get people tested to know their status and get into care 2) Keep people in care to reduce their viral load and reduce the chance of spreading it to others 3) Work with both HIV-positive and HIV-negative people to encourage safer behaviors

Just like in the 80s, it will require a concerted effort on the part of healthcare specialists, government agencies, drug manufacturers and community supporters. oday, most exercises and sports, even those in the Olympic Games, are focused mainly on developing muscular strength and cardiovascular stamina. However, the human body is not only composed of the muscular and cardiovascular systems, but it also includes the immune, endocrine and lymphatic systems, among many others. However, these systems are not addressed by most approaches to exercise and fitness. As a result, the current fitness industry appears to fall short of serving the true health needs of people today.
T
Furthermore, although regular exercise is thought to be highly effective for the prevention and treatment of many common chronic diseases and improves cardiovascular health, there is increasing evidence suggesting that excessive exercise can have a negative impact on the body and longevity. Studies have shown that acute, high-intensity exercise causes short-term damage to cells’ mitochondria and short-term muscle damage in the body, according to the Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine. Additionally, according to a review of the literature published in the June 2012 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, long-term excessive endurance exercise may induce pathologic structural remodeling of the heart and large arteries. Emerging data suggest that chronic training for and competing in extreme endurance events, such as marathons, ultra marathons, ironman distance triathlons and long distance bicycle races, may cause structural changes to the heart and large arteries, leading to myocardial injury.
There is increasing evidence suggesting that excessive exercise can have a negative impact on the body and on longevity Regular exercises in the gym do not seem to meet the challenges of the major health problems that people have today. The world is changing. Cancer, heart disease, strokes and respiratory problems are among the leading causes of death in both the U.S. and most of the industrialized world. Our health today has been greatly affected by the chemicals, hormones and pesticides in our food and environment, often resulting in high levels of toxicity within our bodies. These contaminants, paired with more people working behind a desk with more stress and less exercise, have resulted in an increased incidence in modern diseases. Where do we go from here? Fitness needs a revolution!
The Mind Is Key to the Fitness Revolution
The mind is a powerful tool for health. If we know how to use the mind properly, and combine it with effective exercises, I believe we can bring about significant, long-term changes in our health. We can understand more about harnessing the potential of the mind, and our potential to create the health we desire, through the theory of “Intended Evolution.” This is a new theory that I have been developing for some years now. According to this theory, the evolution of life is driven by two main factors: first, natural selection and outside pressures, and second, "Intention” and internal drive. For a very simple example, let us use two children who are brought to a swimming coach for lessons. The first child, John, loves to swim and wants to be a swimming champion later on in life. The second child, Ben, dislikes swimming and is only there because his parents brought him. Both John and Ben are exposed to the external influences that will make them good swimmers, but John is much more likely to succeed because of his internal drive. He really wants to become a swimming champion. Only when the external and internal factors are working together can true change happen.
TR

HEALTH In a similar manner, the mind can play a key role in changing our health. Most of us know that the mind can affect our hormone levels, causing physical and biological changes in the body. For instance, negative thinking can increase stress, giving rise to the adage "don’t worry yourself sick,” while positive thinking can improve our functioning and strengthen the immune system. When we improve functioning, we increase our chances of survival and longevity. By using our minds in focused, positive ways, we are following the principle of natural selection, which is “the survival of organisms best adapted to their environment.”
If we know how to use the mind properly, and combine it with effective exercises, I believe we can bring about significant, long-term changes in our health
We can apply the theory of Intended Evolution to improve our health and fitness. For example, if every day we focus on the idea that the natural human lifespan is 120 years, or even 150 years, we can help ourselves immediately feel younger. When we create this feeling, I believe our hormones respond accordingly, allowing us to become happier and healthier. If we believe we can live only 80 years or so, then, when we are 50 or 60 years old, we begin to feel our life is close to its end. However, if we focus on the belief that the natural life span extends to 120 or even 150 years, then by the time we reach age 50, we will still think of ourselves as young. The more clear, focused and powerful our intentions are, the more our minds can help us balance our endocrine systems and metabolisms . . . they may even allow us to affect our DNA. This revolution in fitness can result in a long and vital life far beyond what we once thought possible!

Immunotherapy
An allergy extract individually prepared for you Special Contribution to Austin MD by Dr. Amin Mery
Immunotherapy (IT) is a series of injections, or shots, in which you are given a small, concentrated dose of a protein mixture, containing extracts that you are allergic to. IT causes changes in the immune system, so that when your body is exposed to the allergen (what you are allergic to), you have few or no symptoms. Your extract is individually prescribed and contains protein from the positive allergens on your skin. Pollen and environmental extracts are diluted in saline. Venom extracts for stinging insects are mixed with small amounts of human albumin, a blood coagulating protein. When you first start IT, you should receive at least one shot a week. You begin at a very low concentration and gradually build up to the highest concentration, or your “maintenance” strength. When you receive the lower concentrations, you may receive an
YOUR ALLERGEN EXTRACT IS INDIVIDUALLY PREPARED FOR YOU IN OUR ANTIGEN PREPERATION LAB injection as often as three times a week, allowing 48 hours in between injections so your immune system can more quickly process these lower concentrations. Obviously, we will work with your schedule. Our nursing staff will provide you with the necessary information on how to spread out the time interval once you reach your maintenance dose. The length of time on IT varies from patient to patient. Typically, the minimum course is three to five years. Some patients will have to remain on IT longer if they wait too long in between sessions. If you miss your shot period of time (one to two weeks), you will

be given the same dose you received at your previous visit; however, this may lengthen the necessary time to reach your maintenance dose. If you miss an extended amount of time, the dose may be reduced, resulting in additional charges. Improvements will vary from patient to patient. As a general rule, you will not begin to notice significant improvements until you have reached your maintenance strength for several months. Most patients will reach their maximum benefit after they have been “maintaining” for a year to a year and a half. You should continue the allergy medications your doctor has prescribed until advised to reduce or discontinue them. This combination of treatments will provide not only the best results, but also a decrease in your symptoms. The key difference between a person taking steroid shots versus allergy shots is in the allergen protein extracts. Your allergen extract is individually prepared for you in our antigen preparation lab. The steroid shot only temporarily improves allergy symptoms, while IT with allergen extract has long-term benefits.Your extract expires one year from the time it is prepared, so it is best to start your shots as soon as possible. We will contact you when your extract arrives in the office. Check with our office for specific injection hours.
For more information on Hill Country Allergy, visit www.hillcountryallergy.com You should not get an allergy shot if you are acutely ill, have a fever or increased asthma symptoms. You cannot start IT if you are pregnant. Please notify our office as soon as you know you are pregnant so that we can make necessary accommodations for your concentrated dose. The immediate side effects can range from local inflammation such as: swelling, redness and itching at the injection site, to the typical allergy symptoms of itchy, watery eyes and running nose. More severe reactions may include asthma (shortness of breath), difficulty swallowing or hives. If you are taking beta-blocker medications (usually for high blood pressure, heart conditions, glaucoma or migraine headaches) prescribed by another doctor, you should not receive an allergy shot. Rarely do patients have a severe reaction with reduced blood pressure. Studies have shown that patients who have the most severe reactions begin to experience symptoms within 20 to 30 minutes after receiving an injection.
This is why we require you wait 20 minutes after an injection. Some high-risk patients, including those on higher dosages, will be asked to wait 30 minutes. If you develop an adverse reaction at the injection site with only increased swelling or redness, you may apply ice and take an antihistamine if the reaction is bothersome. This should be reported to the nurses prior to your next injection, as your dose may need to be adjusted. These reactions can occur regardless of how long you have been on IT. If the reaction involves an increase in allergy symptoms, such as hives or shortness of breath, call the office immediately. If you are experiencing severe shortness of breath, immediately go to the nearest Emergency Department or call 911. If you are in severe distress, do not attempt to drive yourself to the Emergency Department, instead call 911.

Wouldn’t it be better, though, to clear the main roads of obstacles and keep it clear?
Neural Freedom Think of Your Central Nervous System as a Super Highway Special Contribution to Austin MD by Dr. Phyllis Books
Principle 2: Low IQ is not what we need to look at in terms of efficiency. What we need to concern ourselves with is what I like to call low IfQ, or “interference quotient,” as that is what truly determines learning, behavior and health. Our IfQ can be blown out of proportion when our reptilian brain (our basic, survival brain) hijacks the higher logical centers of the brain and leaves us “out of control.” If you have minimal roadblocks, your IfQ will be low, which will allow your intelligence and performance to reveal your true potential. Principle 3: Inherited anatomical patterns, such as the shape and placement of the skull, eye sockets, jaw and eye fascia, as well as trauma to the whole body’s anatomy, can interrupt learning and performance channels. In my practice, these roadblocks are addressed with gentle, hands-on repeated stimulation, until a new neural signature takes hold and replaces the less efficient system.
Steve’s family was in a dilemma. One parent and one sibling wanted him committed to a mental facility because he seemed schizophrenic and potentially violent. The other parent was searching for other solutions. Steve was 27 at the time, but since the age of 16, his life had gone downhill. No one knew why. As it turns out, Steve played soccer for years, and by the age of 15 his father took him to the emergency ward at least five times. When I heard that piece of the puzzle, I agreed to work with Steve; not on the possible psychiatric issues, but simply on the head injuries. Research verifies that high levels of cortisol (a stress hormone) and lower levels of serotonin (often associated with depression) often follow concussions. If I could help release the trauma from those multiple injuries, it might be possible to normalize the cortisol and serotonin levels and help Steve regain his pre-injury way of being. That is exactly what happened. Within days of our sessions, Steve’s attitude changed. He began thinking more positively. Within two months, he had a new job and a new outlook on life. His father called me—three times at Thanksgiving and three times at Christmas—to thank me for giving him his son back and for turning his son’s life around. How did I do it? Over the past 30 years, I have learned a lot about the brain and the nervous system. More importantly, I have learned how to help people become free of the obstacles that result from a tangled up, incoherent nervous system. For many years, I focused on helping children and adults with dyslexia and ADHD, as all learning and behavioral issues have a neurological component. The same principles apply in all areas of life. Do you ever find yourself making silly mistakes? Or making poor choices? Or being nearly derailed from a chance for advancement in your workplace? Freeing the nervous system is one way of “getting your head on straight” and making choices from a cohesive and calm neurology; a nervous system that supports you and nourishes you, a nervous system that frees you to be healthy and make wise decisions. Neural Freedom is our birthright, yet many people are not living up to
YY

their full potential. The way to achieve this “neural integration” is totally within your reach. And I am totally passionate about helping people achieve this newfound freedom. Our nervous system conducts the flow of information within our bodies, sending messages to the brain and then back out through the body. If we are in good “working order,” all of those messages get to the right place at the right time. If, for some reason, there is a traffic jam along the route, expect long jams and delays – and then lack of neural integration can lead to a breakdown in health and well-being. The nervous system has the equivalent of super highways, which send signals at lightning speed; it also has the equivalent of back roads, which become the only choice when there is interference preventing you from traveling in the fast lane. Neural Freedom has five principles; all rely heavily on Books Neural Therapy™, my innovative, yet back-to-basics approach: Principle 1: Until the basic communication highways are open and free, and neural efficiency is at its peak, no other significant progress can be made. Think of it this way: If we compare the central nervous system, with its various paths and channels to send and deliver information to an elaborate highway system, the neural efficiency is how quickly and easily signals travel along that highway. If that super highway is blocked—the boulders in the way of the whole body/brain communication can be anatomical, chemical and emotional—and the body needs to use “back roads” on the one hand it is wonderful that our brains are sophisticated enough to make the compensation, and on the other hand – and this is critical – when our central nervous system does not work smoothly, it becomes dysregulated and incoherent. Sometimes the signals get lost and never make it to their destination. Imagine yourself behind the wheel when you come upon a traffic jam that stretches for miles. You hear sirens in the distance. You could wait it out, or you could get off the highway; try to find an alternate route and pray you do not get lost. That is what neural inefficiency is like: back roads are used to send signals in the brain-body communication system.
Principle 4: Emotional stress as well as physical or emotional shock accumulates in children and adults, creating roadblocks in these neural highways. Neural Freedom utilizes Books Neural Therapy™ to address these deep layers of dysregulation and help redirect the traffic in the nervous system to build healthier pathways. One of the methods used to address these non-verbal layers is stimulation of 16 eye codes that access different brain wavelengths and brain areas.
Dr. Books also offers professional training courses, learn more about upcoming classes at www.drphyllisbooks.com/upcoming-classes
Principle 5: Chemical influences, like sugar and allergies, can inflame the brain and shut down the passage of information among various organs and the brain itself. Neural Freedom addresses nutritional and allergy components to internal “hazardous weather and travel conditions,” such as brain fog and headaches, by acupressure-like touch, to send redirecting signals until the “conditions are safe for travel” again. Two wildly different learning issues, dyslexia and ADHD, share commonalities, and they contain problems such as neurological dysregulation and incorrect timing and synchronization issues. Many chronic health conditions and peak job or athletic performance issues also stem from these incoherent signals. In other words, the neurology and the way signals are transported from place to place are compromised, and there are roadblocks causing delays and increased IfQs. By utilizing the innovations offered with Neural Freedom, you can increase your productivity and results, whether you are a student with learning and behavior challenges, a business person who needs to work more efficiently or someone who knows there has to be a better way to go through life. Neural Freedom and Books Neural Therapy™ lead you down the path to neural integration, allowing you to “soar with the eagles” instead of limping through life on the back roads. It worked for Steve and his family, and it has worked for the thousands of patients I feel so privileged to have helped.

present in our society, many people are looking for ways to not only improve outdoors and enjoy time with friends and family. While combining these limits some people to what they can do physically. Whether it is physical in a physical fitness class at the gym is not an option for many people.
However, there is an alternative way of improving your game of serving many health and wellness advantages over player to enjoy golf. Though some of the most competitive of all ages can play golf, but how can golf be beneficial to and mental health, but your overall well-being.

You do not have to jump like an NBA player or run like an NFL athletes in the world are golfers, it is a recreational sport by nature. People your health? Let us look at some ways it can help not only your physical
being outdoors
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
T
hough golf may lack the physicality of football, for example, it is a physical game in another sense. Simply swinging a golf club requires the use of, and strengthens, many different muscles in your body. Many people prefer to walk when they play, which increases heart rate, strengthens leg muscles and is a great way to burn calories—all while having fun. Even if you prefer to ride in a golf cart, the physical activity of playing golf is a great way to improve your overall health simply because you are being active.
A round of golf can be very therapeutic and of the most important a great way to relieve One things anyone can do to improve their golf game stress is to increase flexibility as
much as humanely possible by being as flexible as possible. Flexibility plays a major role in improving your golf game.
eing outdoors is one of the most beneficial aspects of playing golf. Let me put it this way...Would you rather spend time in a gym on a treadmill or enjoy a beautiful day on a golf course? The answer to that is easy for most people, myself included. One of the biggest advantages of being outdoors in the sun is the benefits of Vitamin D. The best-known benefit of Vitamin D is its role in helping calcium build strong bones. It also helps regulate the immune system and the neuromuscular system. Vitamin D also plays major roles in the life cycle of human cells.
B
Not only does golf have physical benefits, but being outdoors has other advantages as well. Golf is a great way to spend time with family and friends. Whether you choose to spend a few hours with friends, your spouse, your kids or your family as a group, what better way to spend it than on the golf course? Many people prefer to play golf by themselves, alone with their thoughts. Either way, a round of golf can be very therapeutic and a great stress reliever. Remember, when you are talking about the health benefits of golf, you cannot ignore your mental health. Even if you prefer to just stay on the driving range and hit practice balls, you can walk away feeling better not only physically, but also mentally.
So, the next time you find yourself looking for a way to improve your physical and mental health, consider golf. And remember, it does not matter where you are in life in terms of age... golf does not discriminate. YV

hat if, instead of devoting our attention to curing cancer, we instead tried to prevent it? Dr. David Agus has devoted his life and work to just that, with often surprising results. In his New York Times bestseller, The End of Illness, Dr. Agus shared what he had learned, as one of today’s most prominent cancer doctors and research, about how to prolong the lives of his patients—and also anyone hoping to live long and robustly. With his new book, A Short Guide to A Long Life, he takes this advice further and distills it into a practical, illustrated guide offering just 65 simple rules everyone should follow in order to live a vibrant, productive life. And just who is this expert? Dr. Agus is a professor of medicine and engineering at the University of Southern California and heads USC’s Westside Cancer Center and the Center for Applied Molecular Medicine. In his work, he specializes in treating patients fairly and with advanced cancer techniques. This includes developing clinical trials for new drugs and treatments for cancer. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Dr. Agus completed his residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital, a research fellowship at the National Institutes of Health, and an oncology fellowship at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. In other words: this doc is seriously experienced.
For more info visit www.DavidAgus.com or www.simonandschuster.com. Perhaps one of the more surprising pieces of advice Dr. Agus offers is to ditch vitamins and supplements all together. Among some other surprising things Dr. Agus says, things might harm your health include juicing, detoxing and even airport backscatter X-ray scanners. His beliefs might sound controversial, and he has been labeled that before, but Dr. Agus says he is the “absolute opposite of controversial. “I won’t endorse anything that’s not backed by well-controlled clinical trials—studies that live up to the rigors of the scientific method. But, on the other hand, if his book provokes conversation, then he is satisfied too. “I actually don’t mind stirring up controversy and inspiring people to ask questions, Agus says. “Part of my motivation in writing this book is to make you—the health care consumer—an agent of change, starting with yourself. The book is divided into three sections: “What to Do, which is a set of action items to help you take charge of your personal health; “What to Avoid, which includes rules for what to stay away from that might harm your health; and “Doctor’s Orders, a plan based on what decade you are in that provides a bulleted list of agenda items you should tend to at each age.

You will be guided through poses, movements and breathing patterns, similar to sun salutations. Do not be fooled, however, as this yoga specialty can pose as a challenge even for seasoned yoga practitioners. In Collette’s class, you will experience a light-hearted, dynamic, mindful and fun flow-based practice. Bring your sense of adventure and a smile!
YIN BASED YOGA Yin yoga is a slow-paced style of yoga with postures held for comparatively long periods of time. Yin poses apply moderate stress to the connective tissues with the aim of increasing circulation in the joints, improving flexibility and increasing the flow of energy. Yin yoga will give your tired muscles and joints a much needed release, making this a great practice for athletes. Your body gets a lot of stress while training; let your yoga practice complement all of those hours of training.
ACROYOGA AcroYoga is a blending of four profound, enriching and fun traditions: Yoga, acrobatics, Thai massage and the creative process. It has become the addiction of almost everyone who tries it! AcroYoga is the happy union of yoga and acrobatics. The act of AcroYoga provides a release of the spine using gravity. This specialty form of yoga may seem impossible and only for those very advanced in gymnastics, acrobatics and yoga. However, it is truly a form of yoga that all can find enjoyable and fun. This partner-based specialty yoga, where one person is the base, usually lying flat on the floor, and the other is a flyer, the person being supported by the base. The focus is on togetherness as the way to fully experience our humanness. AcroYoga unfolds naturally
THAI MASSAGE Thai massage is done fully clothed, except for shoes and socks, and it is performed on a yoga mat, allowing for a more thorough massage, rather than a massage done on raised tables. Thai massage is very relaxing and can increase your flexibility and release tension in your muscles. Thai massage has a certain flow to it that is quite different from other forms of massage, but it has many benefits that include the reduction of constipation, IBS, headaches, sciatica, back and neck pain. The practitioner uses his thumbs, palms, forearms, feet, knees and even shins to press into the body, which allows for the flow of energies through the body’s tissues. When all the soft tissues have been thoroughly pressed, the practitioner will begin stretching the body. The process is very thorough in an attempt to break up blockages that cause pain.
ASHTANGA YOGA Ashtanga yoga stresses daily vinyasa flow practice. Ashtanga classes focus on the standing series, varying parts of the primary series and the finishing series. Special attention is paid to learning to use the bandhas, ujjayi breathing, safety and how to vary different asanas. There are six different ashtanga series, through which a student progresses at his or her own pace. Ashtanga yoga is extremely popular and inspires fierce loyalty in its students. Ashtanga class serves as a great introductory level class to this type of practice, as well to those who want to fine tune their practice by developing solid techniques.
YOUR BODY GETS A LOT OF STRESS WHILE TRAINING; LET YOUR YOGA PRACTICE COMPLEMENT ALL THOSE HOURS OF TRAINING
STRENGTH BUILDING HATHA YOGA Hatha yoga is commonly translated as the yoga that brings union of the sun (ha) and the moon (tha). This style of yoga includes specific structured poses that aid with the purification of the body and mind, through principles that include postures and energy control. This is a slow moving yoga focused on postures and breathing control. The hatha technique to yoga is great for beginners and offers many benefits include stress reduction, exercise and can even decrease cravings for unfavorable habits like smoking, drinking, over-sleeping and more.

EATING RIGHT TO DECREASE PAIN Can being gluten free help? by Avinash Ramchandani, MD Painless Nutrition, LLC Dr. Acanash Ramchandani is a Medical Director Pain Care Physician. He is Board Certified in Pain Medicine and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

luten is a natural protein in several different grains, including wheat, barley, rye, triticale, spelt, kamut, farro and durum. Several foods do not inherently contain gluten, but are often contaminated by gluten during the growing process, including oats.
It is not the gluten that is terrible, rather it is the wheat The current type of wheat that we eat was hybridized into a non-hulled dwarf variety to make it easy to cultivate and grow. This caused the total amount of chromosomes to increase from 14 to 42. The chromosomes are actually genes. These genes (also known as the DNA of the organism), in turn, are translated into proteins, like gluten and wheat gliadin protein. Therefore, because of the increase in chromosomes, there are many types of gluten that are introduced into the body when we eat this "modernized" form of wheat. Although wheat is not genetically modified, this is a similar concept to genetically modified foods, in which unnatural protein is introduced into our bodies.
A recent book written by Dr. William Davis, called Wheat Belly, and Dr. David Perlmutter, called Grain Brain, have discussed the ill effects of grain, wheat and gluten protein on the brain and our overall health. Goals The first step to being successful is choosing your goals and purpose. When deciding, you need to be sure that they are specific to you, measurable, attainable in a reasonable time frame, and promote progressive habits over your lifetime.
Strength Training Calling all cardio kings and queens! Resistance training is vital to bone density and muscular function. Strength training can help prevent injury and strengthen supporting muscles involved in running, swimming and cycling. Also, having lean muscle helps increase your metabolism and burns fat more efficiently to shape your physique.
Fuel Your Body Some might say, “Everything in moderation; I workout, so I can eat what I want.” This may sound good, but chances are it is not going to get you to your goals. Nutritionally, you need to fuel your body so that it can perform for you. You have to nourish your body with the right amount of macronutrients so that it functions and digests properly. While exercise is great for you, it is simply not enough. Each individual’s metabolism is different and requires different amounts and quality choices of food.

Cardio Training While cardio may be a coveted activity to some, there are others that dread doing it. Either way, cardiovascular training has many benefits, such as increased endurance and efficiency to the heart and lungs during respiration and reduced risk of heart disease, diabetes and blood pressure. It is also known to aid in weight loss and increase metabolism.

These purified proteins have been used safely for several decades for a variety of medical conditions, such as strokes, migraines and lazy eyes. These act by blocking the signal from the nerve to the muscle, telling it to contract. They are used to relax your facial expression muscles, thereby reducing the appearance of wrinkles. The product that has enjoyed a monopoly over this arena is Botox Cosmetic, made by Allergan. Then, a different form of Botox by the name of Dysport surfaced, which is made by Medicis Aesthetics. The ratio of Dysport to Botox Cosmetic is three to one, with some people having less than satisfactory results due to improper adjusted dosing. The most recent player is Xeomin, made by Merz Aesthetics, which boasts a lack of protein that coats the surrounding surface of the botox component. This makes this product more suitable for those who have built up a tolerance.

Stem cells, directed to differentiate into specific cell types, offer up the possibility of a renewable source of replacement for cells and tissues to treat currently incurable diseases, including Alzheimer's, spinal cord injury, stroke, burns, heart disease, diabetes, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Injected cells may accomplish repair by secreting growth factors. This development is still in its infancy, so watch for further research into how these can be used for skin rejuvenation.

PRP is an autologous preparation of platelets in concentrated plasma. PRP is being widely applied in various medical fields, including dermatology, for its ability to stimulate wound healing. Further, it has been used clinically in mesotherapy for skin rejuvenation. Although PRP injection is considered one of the minimally invasive procedures, it usually causes skin bruises, which will result in longer downtime when compared with other minimally invasive modalities. As PRP secretes a variety of growth factors in order to regenerate the skin, it may be hypothesized that PRP promotes new collagen synthesis as well as other ECM (extracellular matrix) components through activation of fibroblasts. Up to this point, there is no evidently clear method for the clinical application of PRP. Different methods that are being tested include topical application or direct injection into the skin.

Minimally invasive dermal fillers, used alone or in combination with botulinum toxins, have accounted for much of the surge in non-surgical facial rejuvenation procedures. Dermal fillers, incidentally, are my favorite procedures to perform because of their instant gratification. It is more about placement rather than volume, so beware of places that push large numbers of syringes‌they may be incentivizing their staff by how much they sell.

As for legal developments, the Texas Board of Medical Examiners changed a law regarding injectables (botulinum toxins, fillers, etc.) that requires all patients to be evaluated by a physician prior to receiving these treatments, and he or she must be seen regularly by the physician annually thereafter. There are also similar regulations for those receiving certain laser treatments. This was implemented to improve the safety profile and cut down on the number of unregulated nurses and other second-hand trained staff who were practicing outside the scope of their licensure. So, be sure to ask about credentials and years of training and experience, and never skimp when it comes to your face.

Over the past few years, there have been tremendous advances in the use of dermal fillers. There have been enhanced results as well as longevity for treating folds, wrinkles, pitted scars and skin depressions of the face, bringing back its fullness. The most popular ones include Juvederm, Radiesse, Restylane, Perlane, Sculptra and Artefill. The latest filler to join the game is Juvederm Voluma, which boasts two years of duration, compared to most others at one year. This is a much thicker filler and is approved for reshaping the outer cheekbones, filling in gaunt or sunken cheeks.
Adult stem cells and tissues derived from them are currently believed less likely to initiate rejection after transplantation. This is because a patient's own cells could be expanded in culture, coaxed into assuming a specific cell type and then reintroduced into the patient. Mesotherapy is a minimally invasive technique that consists of an intradermal injection of variable mixtures of natural plant extracts, homeopathic agents, pharmaceuticals, vitamins and other bioactive substances in microscopic quantities through multiple dermal punctures. It has been used to rejuvenate and eventually tone the injected areas of the face and other body areas, like the neck, low neckline (decolletage), dorsum (back of hands), belly and the inner surface of the arms and legs. The simplest and most common formulation of mesotherapy for facial skin rejuvenation involves the injection of a multivitamin solution into the dermis over the course of multiple sessions. The type of mesotherapy that I frequently perform consists of dissolving small pockets of fat, such as the jowls, double chin and bags under eyes.

4D body Scuplting Technology in Austin A New Device for Fat reduction and Skin Tightening by Lauren Bolado
!
ennifer L. Walden, MD, a board certified plastic surgeon, is the first and only physician in Austin to use the innovative Venus Legacy™ body sculpting tool featuring LiftFX™ and SculptFX™. The Venus Legacy™ is the latest FDAcleared technology for non-surgical fat reduction, cellulite reduction and skin tightening for the face, neck and body. The device’s one-of-a-kind 4D technology simultaneously combines the proven Multi-Polar Radio Frequency (RF) and Pulsed Magnetic Fields (PMF), which produces a dense and uniform heat matrix. This causes collagen synthesis and contraction, fibroblast proliferation, neovascularity and lipolysis. This system also includes the VariPulse™ and Real Time Thermal Feedback features.
This has resulted in better clinical outcomes for non-invasive fat reduction, skin tightening and cellulite and stretch mark reduction
\\

The Multi-Polar RF is used to focus heat towards various tissue depths, targeting and disabling fat cells, while simultaneously stimulating the growth of new collagen to help tighten the skin and reduce wrinkles. PMF is used to accelerate the healing and rejuvenation process by increasing blood flow and cellular nourishment, which helps slow the aging process. The new VariPulse™ is an adjustable pulsed suction feature designed to deliver the combined energies more uniformly, stimulate lymphatic drainage and enhance patient comfort throughout their treatment. Real Time Thermal Feedback allows for superior operator control throughout the painless treatment and it also contributes to the improvement of the patient’s results.
This innovative patented technology combines Multi-Polar RF, pulsed magnetic fields and adjustable pulsed suction, which improves energy delivery and patient comfort. This has resulted in better clinical outcomes for non-invasive fat reduction, skin tightening and cellulite and stretch mark reduction.
painlessly and with zero downtime using this technology,” Dr. Walden says. “I also recommend complementary treatments such as Botox®, Restylane® or other fillers, which can further enhance results for those seeking a more youthful appearance without surgery.”
“As a plastic surgeon with high standards for any medical device I place in my office,” says Dr. Walden, “I spent a lot of time researching and conducting in-office trials of the previous technology, Venus Freeze™, before deciding to add it to our practice.” She also states that, “The new Venus Legacy™ features LiftFX™ and SculptFX™, which is an advancement of that already proven technology.” Acting as either a complement to liposuction or as a standalone treatment for patients looking for alternatives to surgery, this is an ideal addition to any plastic surgery practice.”
Non-invasive radiofrequency (heating) and cryolipolysis (freezing) methods of fat reduction and skin tightening are ever-evolving improvements in the aesthetic industry. These treatments are great for specific circumstances but will not take the place of a well-performed cosmetic surgical procedure, like liposuction for the reduction of fat, or a neck lift for the tightening and lifting of the skin, as well as underlying tissues of the face.
Post-pregnancy loose skin and persistent abdominal fat in women are Patients require between six to eight treatments for the face and neck, and GSQQSR EJ¾MGXMSRW between eight to ten treatments for XLEX GER FI HMJ½GYPX the body. All treatments are spaced a week apart and can last anywhere to solve solely from 10 minutes for a neck lift to 40 through diet and minutes for the body. The cost for a treatment series ranges anywhere from exercise $1,500 to $2,500, which most patients find very reasonable considering their results without surgery.
The Venus Legacy™ is a wonderful solution for someone with mild to moderate isolated pockets of fat. Post-pregnancy loose skin and persistent abdominal fat in women are common afflictions that can be difficult to solve solely through diet and exercise. Venus Legacy™ treatments can solve pesky problems like the ones mentioned above, as well as problem areas including the upper arms, inner and outer thighs, love handles, bra roll, the neck and the lower face. Dr. Walden has also seen some improvements with this procedure regarding cellulite and stretch marks, which are notoriously difficult problems to treat. The Venus Legacy™ is a cost effective and safe option for skin tightening and fat reduction. Patients who maintain a healthy diet and regular exercise will see long-term results. Pertaining to skin tightening, the effects of time and aging will occur regardless; however, Venus Legacy™ reduces the effects caused by aging. Maintenance treatments may be done every year or so in order to maximize these results. “While the Venus Legacy™ is by no means a substitute for those needing surgery, patients can still achieve impressive results

IMPROVING YOUR HOSPITAL EXPERIENCE For Medicare patients, this means coordinating discharge care Special Contribution to Austin MD by Elizabeth Chmelik, M.D. and Jason Sutton, M.D. with WellMed Medical Group
A
s hospitalists at WellMed – physicians who focus on providing care for patients in the hospital – we are all too aware of the challenges facing the healthcare system in curbing readmission rates for patients, particularly Medicare patients. The federal government claims some $26 billion is spent on readmissions for Medicare patients, and more than $17 billion pays for return trips that could be avoided if patients are given the right care the first time around. The issue is critical for healthcare providers because the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is financially penalizing hospitals that fail to get a handle on high rates of hospital readmissions – typically defined as patients returning to the hospital within 30 days of being discharged. The issue is critical for Medicare patients because of the emotional, physical and financial toll that hospitalization often places on them and their families. In 2010, the 30-day hospital readmission rate for Medicare patients in Texas and Travis County hovered just above 15 percent, according to “The Revolving Door: A Report on U.S. Hospital Readmissions.” Translated, that means a little more than one in seven patients discharged from the hospital were back within 30 days. The report, released last year by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, provides a common-sense (and evidence-based) list of reasons for why this is happening: differences in patient health status; the quality of inpatient care, discharge planning and care coordination; the availability and effectiveness of local primary care; and the threshold for admission in the region. We are part of the Specialists for Health medical group, supporting patients in the WellMed Network. We have privileges at four hospitals and two nursing homes in Travis County. Like our counterparts at WellMed Medical Group, we specialize in senior healthcare. Our Austin team includes four hospitalists, with a fifth joining our team in April. Before the hospitalist program for WellMed patients was initiated in early 2012, the hospital re-admission rate was close to 20 percent for the year 2011. Since then, we have helped reduce that rate to 14 percent and have just initiated a new protocol that shows the promise to drastically reduce the rate further.

First, here are a couple of things that we do that go beyond the protocol for hospital providers: 1. PCP visits within 72 hours – We coordinate with the primary care physician/clinic to arrange patients discharged from the hospital to be seen within three days. CMS standards advocate for patients to be seen within two weeks after discharge. By shortening the time before the transition visit, the patient’s medical home care team can immediately address any issues that have popped up postdischarge and ensure patients are following their postdischarge care plan. This is also accompanied by a nurse phone call to the patient within 24 hours of discharge. 2. Regular meeting with PCPs – we meet regularly (usually weekly) with WellMed primary care physicians to discuss discharged patients, their progress, their care plan and more. This interaction is sometimes done over the phone, but often we have face-to-face meetings at the clinic, giving us a level of familiarity with not only the PCP, but also the staff. This translates into more effective communication and coordination of care. These may sound like small steps, but they have a major impact on the way patients receive treatment after leaving the hospital.
Many of our Medicare patients are on fixed incomes and are rightly concerned about any additional medical costs
This year, we initiated a pilot program to help meet a need we recognized was contributing to hospital re-admissions – the failure of discharged patients to pick up or properly take medication prescribed for them at the hospital. When patients do not pick up prescriptions—or wait days to pick up a medication— that should be taken immediately, this can lead to acute problems and a potential visit to the emergency room. So we arranged to have medications prescribed for postdischarge use to be delivered to a patient’s hospital room. Again, this sounds like a small thing, but it took some work to achieve. First, we initially could not find a pharmacy willing to deliver to the hospital room without incurring additional delivery fees. Many of our Medicare patients are on fixed incomes and are rightly concerned about any additional medical costs. Ultimately, we partnered with the independent South Austin Pharmacy, who agreed to deliver medications to the hospital room at no additional cost. The delivery staff are not only bike messengers, but they are pharmacy technicians or the pharmacy owner himself. This is important because, upon delivery of the

prescriptions, patients are counseled at their bedside about what the medication does, possible side effects, when to take it, what to take with it and, perhaps most importantly, what medicines to avoid taking with it. This reinforces the pharmacy education we also provide for patients before discharge, and the education patients receive at their PCP follow-up visit. Most importantly, it puts prescription medication that is necessary for proper rehabilitation and recovery into the hands of patients at a critical time that is most effective for them. Over a six-month period, only seven percent of the 53 patients who participated in the pilot prescription delivery program were re-admitted to the hospital within 30 days. We hope to see similar results as we have made this program the protocol for all patients we care for in the hospital in the Austin market. There is no single magic bullet for improving healthcare, but one thing we firmly believe is that coordination of care is essential for developing a better overall hospital experience, which should include the discharge process. Good communication, coordination and overcoming barriers to effective care are all part of transformational progress in the way healthcare is delivered.

Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation:
The chief goals in a physical therapy program are to bring the patient pain relief, minimize impairment, keep a standard of mobility, improve physical function and, most importantly, teach the patient self-management of his or her condition.
Psychological Evaluation & Treatment
Unhealthy behaviors, from smoking and poor diet to a sedentary lifestyle and poor coping skills, are all major contributors to illness. The prolonged course of illness and disability from chronic diseases, such as diabetes and arthritis, result in extended pain and suffering and decreased quality of life for millions of Americans. Fortunately, we can learn techniques to control negative thoughts and change unhealthy behaviors. Health psychology uses psychological principles to promote healthier lifestyles and to treat and prevent illnesses.
APA’s Vision:
H E A LT H C A R E
Austin Pain Associates realizes the goal of treating patients with chronic pain is to both reduce pain levels and restore functionality. APA realizes that a multidisciplinary approach is the most effective way to achieve this goal, and creates an individualized pain management treatment plan for each patient that addresses the physical, functional, psychological and emotional aspects of chronic pain. · APA succeeds by always putting the needs of our patients above all else, and by empowering our staff to be problem solvers, guided by what is in the best interest of the patient, rather than solely by protocols. · APA staff and providers are driven by high standards of professionalism and expertise in their respective roles, and realize a collaborative approach with each other, and the patient, achieves the best medical outcomes for our patients. · APA staff and providers realize that our medical practice is one link in the continuum of care being provided to our patients by our local medical communities, the state of Texas, and the nation at large; and that we have a role in adhering to the basic scientific, ethical, financial and legal principles that reflect that responsibility. · APA believes in treating all patients who enter our practice with respect and grave concern, in addressing all patients regardless of their ability to pay or prior pain management treatment failures, and in expanding our range of services, our medical practice, and our sphere of influence throughout central Texas and beyond.
Dr. ALAN SILBERBERG Clinical Research Trials

making a difference for patients. “I love having direct access to all my patients through multiple locations and the fact that at APA we work and partner with a variety of other physicians to create the best possible treatment plan.”
An Integrated Team Practice
Dr. Robert Wills, founder of Austin Pain Associates, has two professional passions: anesthesiology and pain management. He enjoyed the excitement of anesthesiology but missed the ability to build true partnerships with his patients. “I love the long-term relationship with patients, which is why I switched from anesthesia to pain management.” More than that, it helped motivate him to start APA in 2002 as a means to further his desire to treat patients with chronic pain syndromes in a comprehensive, interdisciplinary clinic.
“OUR ENVIRONMENT IS RELAXED AND PATIENT-CENTERED, AND OUR GOAL IS TO GIVE THE BEST QUALITY OF CARE AVAILABLE.”
- Silberberg
Dr. Brannon Frank, Medical Director for Austin Pain Associates, says that APA began with a vision for giving patients a different kind of pain care experience. “We started with one location with only about 30 employees. Being a small business gave our practice an intimate ‘mom and pop’ feel.” Nine years later, they have expanded throughout the greater Austin area, but the practice has emphasized keeping the same small business feel as when it was only a single office. Dr. Alan Silberberg says that APA’s multiple locations and professional relationships with other practitioners are part of APA’s philosophy of Photography by Winston Lackey
FOR MORE All 11 APA physicians share Dr. Wills’, Dr. Frank’s and Dr. Silberberg’s passion for integrated, interdisciplinary care for both the body and mind to manage chronic pain. To achieve their goal, they work with 18 mid-level providers – such as Physicians’ Assistants (PA’s) and Family Nurse Practitioners (FNP’s) – and 10 behavioral health providers. 3-D Organ Printing
AND OPEN AND EXAMS TO THE PUBLIC
E
veryday in the U.S., roughly 100,000 individuals are waiting on some type of organ transplant list. According to The Hastings Center, a bioethics non-profit center in New York, about a dozen people die each day waiting for an organ that will never arrive. Fortunately, with the help of 3-D organ printing, researchers and developers in the biotechnology field are coming closer everyday to solving this problem. While the ultimate goal for usable biomaterials is one that can be taken off the shelves at any Home Depot, researchers have found that a patients’ own cells and tissues work best. Bioprinting works by taking cells from an individual’s organ and then transplanting those cells into an ink cartridge, layered as tissues and ultimately organs. The 3-D printer is able to print organs with the cells and tissues. The cells eject as a gel, and the organ maintains its shape in a glue-like fashion. 3-D organ printing, otherwise known as bioprinting, consists of printing human stem cells onto a 3-D printer to produce a human organ. This process includes taking human epithelial cells, which stay actively reproductive throughout most of a persons life, and then transferring them into a gel, where they are rigorously tested for their durability with micro-pump machines. Once these stem cells clear this check point, they are then placed into an ink cartridge in their gel format (think of the gel as being equivalent to ink in a printer cartridge) and printed as a hollow organ that maintains its shape in a glue-like fashion, based on the inputs from the computer. Think of this much in the same way as when we click a button to have our computers print papers of any kind. In 2011, Anthony Atala, director of the Wake
Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine, gave a TED Talk on bioprinting. In his speech, he displayed a kidney that was printed earlier in the day for the audience to see. What might have been lost on the audience members was that this kidney was not a fully functional organ, rather a kidney model. This displays one major hurdle for researchers in this innovative field to overcome: how to print fully functional, complex organs that can be placed into human beings so they can function with them. This brings up yet another issue, which is: how do researchers accomplish this goal without the patient’s own cells rejecting the organ that is not their own?
valves throughout their lives without any issues.
The body is a highly complex and specific system, and if these cells and tissues do not match the almost exact dimensions to the nearest nanometer in the body, the likelihood of rejection and death, both on a cellular and overall system level, is relatively high.
In 2014, we may be the first generation to see a fully functional 3-D printed organ: the liver.
8LI ( TVMRXIV MW EFPI XS print organs with the cells and tissues The organs and tissues that have been successful are those that are not highly vascularized, or highly supplied with blood vessels, such as the ear and bladder. Vascularization presents the largest problem, but one that bioprinting has the largest capacity to solve. The entire body system is highly vascularized, and it is the white blood cells in our immune system that either accept or reject whatever we ingest. If our white blood cells—specifically cytotoxic T cells— reject foreign antigens, then the potential for cell apoptosis (cell death) is high. One solution to this problem is seen in infants, where artificial heart valves are surgically replaced. The capillaries then grow and mold over the
What happens when an adult needs a new kidney, lung or liver? Workable solutions have been in progress, such as taking individual muscle cells and working them in the lab, so that they can be engineered to make the necessary tissues that make up the complex organs of the heart, kidneys and liver. The problem is not the organs themselves, rather the highly complex system of blood vessels, capillaries and different tissue types surrounding the organs that poses the biggest problem. Regenerative medicine’s main goal is “to do no harm,” with the promise of “making our patients better.”
Researchers at the Gladstone Institutes and University of California, San Francisco, recently released an innovative type of cell programming that may make epithelium cells functional as liver cells. Sheng Ding, the senior investigator at Gladstone Institutes, says, “We thought that, rather than taking these skin cells all the way to a stem cell-like state, perhaps we could take them to an intermediate phase.” Rather than starting over, they were able to create endoderm (embryonic) cells. While growing these liver cells in the lab, they have made significant progress and seen great results. “The power of regenerative medicine already allows scientists to transform skin cells into cells that closely resemble heart cells, pancreas cells and even neurons,” concludes a study from Nature, a scholarly journal. Hopefully before the end of 2014, we as a population can see a 3-D human liver fully functional as a transplant, ultimately capable of saving hundreds of thousands of lives.

Natural medicine is widely considered to be an alternative option for addressing illness or disease, but Austin Natural Healing Center provides safe treatment options for working with a large variety of ailments, including chronic health problems and preventative care. Western medicine is still necessary for major medical issues, like surgery, but as for many health problems, natural medicine, such as acupuncture, acupressure and herbal remedies, can provide affordable care without the side effects that can be an issue with conventional drugs. “Acupuncture is designed to help with a wide variety of diseases and problems, like pain management, headaches, insomnia, allergies, infertility and tinnitus,” Dr. Don Zhang of Austin Natural Healing Center explains.
In addition to his work with herbal formulas, Dr. Zhang has developed The Zhang Microsystems Acupuncture Method, for which he won the prestigious Huang Di Award at the sixth International Conference of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1996. “We have found [that] people have reduced their insulin after only weeks on this program, and for some, even reversed their diabetes,” Dr. Zhang says.
For many, losing weight is needed to manage a disease, like diabetes or high blood sugar. The Fit -150® program has very specific exercises designed to burn blood sugar quickly and effectively, which is very important to those with these conditions.
Fit-150® is very easy to do, and it is a lot of fun! This program can be done by everyone because of its gentle exercises that are easy to do, even for people who are unable to keep up with other exercise routines. For people in fairly good health, the program can prevent any future problems, making it a long-term solution for people at every fitness level.
we must first define what acupuncture is. Acupuncture is divided into two main categories. The first category is traditional acupuncture. This acupuncture is based on the traditional 14 basic meridians (energy pathways) and the meridian points. The second category of acupuncture is based on the newly-discovered microsystems, which are very popular right now. Examples of some of the microsystems approaches are ear, scalp, wrist and ankle acupuncture. The Zhang Microsystems Acupuncture Method is composed of a series of the 10 or more microsystems. This method can be used for a variety of diseases and conditions, but Dr. Zhang has found it very effective for treating eye diseases, like macular degeneration, glaucoma and floaters, ear problems, allergies, asthma, addictions to nicotine, conditions resulting from a stroke and for cosmetic maintenance of the skin, including wrinkles and rashes. Dr. Zhang is also the creator of Z-Acu-Therapy, a painless acupressure method using his microsystems technique, which is great for pain management, chronic injury, stress, allergies and insomnia.

As Austin's growth explodes, so do the needs of its community. Many nonprofits lack the resources needed to keep up with the growing demands and accomplishment of their work. These easy tools can put the power to help in your hands, making it effortless and convenient to give back both in your daily life and on the go. And, much like Citizen Generation’s motto, these apps combine philanthropy with your daily routine, so you can easily LIVE, PLAY, WORK and GIVE every day. Did you know 50 million Americans go to bed hungry every night? Now with the TangoTab app there is a way to help solve this problem just by dining out. If there is one thing Austinites do well, it is dining out. And with the food craze growing in Austin, this app is the perfect tool to stay cool and give back. TangoTab offers great discounts to local restaurants that you can use immediately. Every time you use a free TangoTab restaurant deal, they donate a meal to a person in need through a local charity. The math is simple according to TangoTab developers: with 50 million Americans going hungry every night, and more than a billion meals sold in restaurants each week, we can all contribute in the aid to end our country’s hunger epidemic.
that allows you to earn money and raise awareness for charities by walking, running or biking—all courtesy of their corporate partners. It is as simple as choosing a charity and then hitting the streets by hiking, biking and running. While you become active, the app will measure your distance, and you will earn money for your charity: 10¢ per mile for bikers, 25¢ per mile for walkers and runners, all up to their initial one million dollar corporate sponsorship pool. Now you really can go the distance for charity! Google has become a verb in the English vocabulary. How many times a day do you hear or say, “Just Google it?” Well, now you can search and give back all at once. While Goodsearch is not an app, it is one of the simplest ways you can give back just by continuing your daily routine. Goodsearch is powered by YAHOO!’s search parameters that allow internet users to pick a nonprofit organization of their choice and allocate the money raised from searching the web to that charity. It really is as easy as that! According to Goodsearch’s website, more than 15 million people used Goodsearch to browse the Internet, which in turn supported more than 100,000 nonprofit organizations and schools. Since 2006, more than ten million dollars has been raised through daily Internet searches!
The Instead app encourages small donations that make a big difference
Similar to Citizen Generation’s mission, the Instead app encourages small donations that make a big impact. Many people, especially young professionals, want to give back but may not have the means to make large donations. Instead works by suggesting donations in increments of $3 or $5. The app provides inspirational messages and reminds donors that opting to drink water will save enough money to provide somebody with clean water for one year. Every little bit counts, and when donations are totaled, you may be surprised by how much you really can give back. With Austin named one of the fittest cities in the nation, Charity Miles is a perfect app for socially conscious and active Austinites. The Charity Miles app is a free app
At Citizen Generation, we like to think philanthropy is a lifestyle rather than one transaction. Now, thanks to technology, it is easy to feed the hungry, raise money for charity and participate in random acts of kindness throughout your daily life. These apps are readily available on most smartphones and make giving back a swipe of your finger or a touch of a button. We hope you will join us in a lifestyle that includes philanthropy in everyday living.

ccess to care. It is a buzz-phrase that has been tossed about for years, but certainly not more prominently so than throughout this past decade and, most notably, over the past six years. It is a phrase that often creates controversy and raises the question of both those on the left and the right, politically speaking, for various reasons. With the passing of The Affordable Care Act, whether or not you agree with the legitimacy of the affordable aspect of its title, a spotlight has once again been thrust upon the topic of access to care.
The average American’s access to medical care is growing across the board.
Whether or not you believe access to care to be a basic human right, versus a simple privilege extended as a gift of American citizenship, the average American’s access to medical care is growing across the board. I believe the expansion of that access represents the greatest medical innovation for the masses that we will see coming down the road for a long, long time. Today, as Americans, we have more options and choices than ever before when it comes to seeking medical care. Urgent Care centers exist in almost every city and town in America, while major retail outlets such as Target and Walmart offer an array of ‘clinical’ services in a menu-like format, to treat a variety of common, non-emergent ailments. Another major innovation where access to care is concerned comes in the form of the proliferation of stand-alone or freestanding emergency centers. An American Medical News article from April 29, 2013, states, “Centers are opened by hospitals and physicians, sometimes separately, sometimes in alliance,” and they also mention that “the centers’
numbers have doubled during the past decade, up to 284 in 45 states.” The number of centers has continued to increase since that article was first published. Freestanding emergency centers have the capacity to treat more severe medical conditions than retail clinics or urgent care facilities. They often maintain transfer agreements with larger local medical facilities in order to transfer patients requiring specialty medical or surgical care, or hospital admission. Although there is no substitute for an ongoing relationship with one’s pediatrician, specialist or primary care physician, there are times when, for whatever reason, you may not be able to make a timely appointment.
Regardless, at least at this juncture in time, I believe that as Americans, we are already reaping the benefits of expansion in our access to care… to an extent well beyond the scope of any other developed nation of the world. Our expanded access to care can be attributed not only to innovative existing hospital systems that have recognized, at times, the need to expand their services out into their communities, but also to innovative physicians and entrepreneurs willing to develop something ‘outside the box’ of the traditional hospital-based model, in an effort to make good quality and efficient medical care more accessible to us all… 24/7.
The alternative option that urgent care and freestanding emergency centers provide, as an access to minor and emergency care, simply did not exist for most people two decades ago. Not only have these options created an expansion of choices for all citizens who have the occasional need to seek medical attention outside of their primary providers, but most of these alternatives accommodate for a variety of payment options. For example, an uninsured individual with a tight work schedule who contracts the flu may be able to receive adequate treatment, paying outof-pocket at any number of the aforementioned centers, without breaking their bank. A variety of private insurance plans are generally recognized by these innovative alternative treatment centers and many accept Medicaid and Medicare as sources to pay for service. It remains to be seen just how affordable the business of medicine will become as we witness the full implementation of The Affordable Care Act over the years. Anyone can speculate as to whether the growing role of government in the delivery of healthcare is a positive or negative development, and many of us will shape our view through the lens of political affiliation.

Tarrytown Pharmacy makes individualized care a priority
!
by Lauren Bolado
arrytown Pharmacy has been serving the Austin area for over 70 years. Over these years, innovations in the pharmaceutical industry and the prevalence of big name pharmacies have changed the industry, but Tarrytown Pharmacy has stayed true to its mission: dependability and quality service. Mark and Leslie Newberry are the third generation of Newberrys to own Tarrytown Pharmacy, starting with Mark’s grandfather, Jack Newberry. Mark’s father, Brian Newberry, purchased the store and continued the traditions of service, community and dependability until Mark decided that he, too, would purchase the store and carry on the family business. Mark explains that he was never asked to take on the family business.
One thing pharmacies do very well is treat people who are sick. An area we can improve is to help our patients lead healthier lifestyles to prevent them from getting ill in the first place. “My father told me, ‘Son, you need to find out what you love doing and what makes you happy. You are not going to be good at it if you don’t love doing it,’” Mark explains. Mark loves being a pharmacist and says that going into work at Tarrytown Pharmacy each day is like social hour because he knows all of his customers so well. His patients and customers are his friends, and he takes pride in helping those he cares about as well as offering a pharmacy with great service and convenience. Tarrytown Pharmacy offers conveniences that are uncommon to the times. Customers unable to come into the pharmacy to pick up their prescriptions or other necessities are able to have their orders delivered. For the mother with a sick child or a disabled senior citizen, for example, this service is helpful and appreciated. The most unique of the conveniences available at Tarrytown Pharmacy is their ability to produce compounded prescriptions. Ironically, pharmacies used to produce compounded prescriptions quite often because there were not any large pharmaceutical companies to massproduce the medications. As these companies started becoming more prevalent, compounding became less common, but its use is on the rise again. Compounding gives the pharmacist the capability of personalizing a prescription to fill the individual needs of each customer, including pets.
Due to the accessibility to the customer, his goal is to reach his customers on a more personal level to encourage healthy living WZ

“Animals get sick too,” Mark says. “A lot of the drugs they need are similar to human medications, but the delivery methods and dosages may need
MEDICAL to be adjusted.” Because animals do not have nearly as many treatment options as humans do, this service can help pet owners get medications not typically available. In addition to receiving medications that are individually made with their pets’ needs in mind, flavorings, such as liver for dogs or fish for cats, can be added to make the medication enjoyable for the animal. The method of administering medication can also be altered, like the topical method, for specific conditions as opposed to an oral medication. Compounding has many benefits, including the ability to reproduce discontinued medications, change the delivery method to suit individual needs, adjust doses that are not mass produced by large pharmaceutical companies and make medications that are allergy friendly. Compounding is innovating the pharmaceutical industry, yet it is not widely available. There are only a few locations in Austin where this service is available, making Tarrytown Pharmacy a leader in customercentered service. “What sets us aside from chains is our service: We sell service,” Mark says. Their service is what keeps the pharmacy very busy each day. Physicians refer patients to Tarrytown Pharmacy for their unique compounding ability so that patients have their one-stop-shop for medicinal needs. Also available at Tarrytown Pharmacy is a cozy, comfortable boutique filled with high-end gifts that provides a warm and inviting atmosphere. Preventative consulting and care is the future for Tarrytown Pharmacy. “One thing pharmacies do very well is treat people who are sick. An area we can improve is to help our patients lead healthier lifestyles to prevent them from getting ill in the first place,” Mark explains. Tarrytown Pharmacy hopes to add preventative care and education to its model with supplements and disease management options. Mark explains that his customers may only see their physician once a year, whereas he may see them once a month. Due to the accessibility to the customer, his goal is to reach his customers on a more personal level to encourage healthy living. Tragedy struck the Newberry family when Mark lost his father to cancer, but through this tragedy, Mark found the inspiration to lead a healthier lifestyle. “Tragedy can strike at any time, and we can’t control a lot of it. I can control my own risk factors through lowering my cholesterol, controlling my blood sugar, eating healthy and exercising regularly,” Mark explains. The birth of his twin daughters gave him a new perspective on how, but more importantly why, to live a healthier lifestyle. Mark is participating in his first marathon in two weeks and will be competing in the Hawaii Half Iron Man. He is excited for these competitions, because they play into his competitive nature while keeping him in shape, and this provides a way to stay active with friends! “Healthy living is key,” Mark says. “In order to instruct my customers to live healthy, I have to walk the walk myself. That is why my wife and I have taken an active approach to refining our diet, exercising regularly and being healthy.”

CT scans are used in a variety of situations, but they are most commonly used after head or other body trauma, or if a patient is experiencing acute abdominal pain, chest pain or shortness of breath. A CT scan uses an X-ray source just like a "plain" X-ray does. However, it uses a narrowly focused source and a rotating detector that can be thought of like the sensor in a digital camera. Using this focused source, images taken from many angles create a cross-sectional image of the body’s bones and soft tissues. This tool is very effective in diagnosing injuries, trauma and acute illness throughout the body including the head, chest, abdomen and pelvis. The process of getting a CT scan begins with visiting a physician to see if the scan is appropriate or not. If a physician believes the best way to diagnose any problems is a CT scan, the patient will be sent to a radiologist to have the scan done. Patients are sometimes given a contrast material, or dye, to see certain areas better. If a contrast material is needed, it may be administered orally with a drink, with an injection in the arm or in the rectum depending on what area of the body needs to be viewed. Next, the patient will lie on a table that is attached to the donut-shaped CT scanner. The table will move slowly into the “hole, or gantry, of the donut, and images will then be taken as the gantry rotates around you. The whole process takes only a few minutes. The technician will be close by in a separate room and can be spoken to through an intercom.
“The SafeCT module allows us to obtain an image on the same CT scanner, but now with lower dose settings. Innovative post-processing software then renders images that look to me just like the regular dose images, Joshua Lucas, M.D., medical director of the River Place Imaging & Women’s Center and lead radiologist, says. CT scans are safe, though abdominal scans on pregnant women are not normally done, with certain exceptions. Radiologists also take care to avoid medical radiation for the pediatric population, and lower dose whenever possible. Nevertheless, there are many cases when CT is necessary and should not be delayed in children, including trauma. When CT is needed for children, using the lowest possible dose is essential since children are more sensitive to radiation exposure, and have the longest lifetime ahead. The SafeCT scan is innovative to the radiology field. The new SafeCT technology provides a comparable image to traditional CT scans, while decreasing the risks of medical radiation exposure. As the only imaging center with this technology in the Austin area, River Place Imaging & Women’s Center is working to provide a safe and effective option for its patients. "Everything about this center has been designed with patients' comfort, safety and general well-being in mind," Dr. Lucas says. 1.In the last few years, clinics have popped up around the country providing the so-called “bioidentical hormones for antiaging and to make you feel younger and better 2.Bioidentical is NOT human identical 3.Hormone replacement, in the absence of a true hormone deficiency, can be detrimental to one’s health. For example, there is no adrenal fatigue. Either you do or you do not have adrenal failure, which can be a serious and potentially fatal disease 4.Another example is Wilson Temperature Syndrome, which advocates using a T3 thyroid hormone preparation just by measuring the temperature of the body, regardless of the thyroid hormone levels in your body; this is another myth and T3 preparations may seriously harm the body 5.Some other examples of myths are the HCG weight loss diet and the fountain of youth usage of hormones like growth hormone. Neither one of these has ANY scientific data to support their use and again may be harmful 6.Hormones cannot be and should not be used for anti-aging, treatment of fatigue, depression, increasing potency or muscle mass, etc. 7.First, do no harm 8.The Institute will offer to patients Dr. Scumpia’s’ 20+ year expertise in hormone science and will present the evidence based approach to hormone replacement therapies

body systems and then giving the person a customized health profile, which can be used for optimizing their health 6.We will measure what is measurable and make measurable that what is not 7.The biological age is combined with biomarkers and then selected depending on your age and state of health. It includes extensive laboratory analysis of various organs/genetic evaluation/advanced cholesterol testing 8.Once you have the scientific and objective data of the biological age then you can compare it with the person’s chronological age and try to integrate it with the genetic potential of the person in order to have a plan of action for his/her optimal age 9.This is not about treatment of a diseased organ or tissue; it is about measuring and then bringing your biological age as close to and lower than your chronological age 10.Dr Scumpia, an endocrinologist with 20+ years of experience in hormones, has followed this field for many years and will try to integrate the science of biological age with hormones and optimal health as a unique approach. This is a new and evolving field with only partial evidence-based science; therefore, again, the old Hippocrates dictum, “First do no harm, approach should prevail under the guidance of an experienced endocrinologist

High cholesterol remains one of the primary risk factors for heart disease. And, while the medical profession has come a long way in the battle against heart disease, even by getting patients to keep their cholesterol down by eating well, exercising and taking cholesterol-lowering statin drugs, a large number of heart attacks and strokes also occur in people with seemingly safe cholesterol levels. Although total cholesterol numbers may be deceivingly low, the composition of cholesterol may be such that it contains an unusually high amount of particles that promote blockage in the arteries of the heart. What innovations have occurred regarding dental materials?
How has the dental experience changed over the years?
Crowns or caps, as they are commonly referred to by patients, have consisted of several types of materials over the years. They began as cast metal in that they were made of gold originally. Then, the movement was made towards bilayered systems—ceramic over a metal alloy substructure. With the advent of stronger porcelains, dentistry today can now be truly considered metal-free. We have two materials that cover all the bases: first, a monolithic porcelain called e.max, which has excellent aesthetics and is much stronger than porcelains of the past. This e.max porcelain in most cases can be used anywhere in the mouth. The second material is Zirconium, which is metal-free and extremely strong—so much that it can be hit with a sledgehammer and not break. Although stronger, this material is not quite as aesthetic as the e.max so we reserve this for restorations in the back of the mouth for utmost strength. Zirconium is ideal for people who tend to clench or grind their teeth. The latest innovation that dentistry has to offer for a missing tooth in the front of the mouth, where aesthetics is of the utmost importance, would be placing a Zirconium abutment over an implant and cementing an e.max all-porcelain crown over the abutment. Do not be afraid to have the discussion with your dentist about what materials are being used and why.
Oral health, as it relates to overall body health, is not necessarily a new concept, but it is slow to be adapted by all dentists. Typically, dentists in the past would just focus on teeth, but now our focus is on how your oral health affects your entire body. During our new patient experience, our office collects data by taking digital radiography (roughly 90 percent less radiation than non-digital) and intra-oral photos, so that we may show the patient exactly what we see. In addition, we measure pockets around each tooth, which is an indicator of the health of supporting structures of the tooth (gum & bone). We also carefully review our patients’ medical history and take into account all the factors that could possibly contribute to one’s health, which may include genetic predispositions, medications and habits. Habits can be anything from clenching or grinding, to smoking or drinking soda all day, to name a few – all of which can contribute to your oral health and therefore need to be taken into consideration. Once all of the data is collected, we discuss the options with the patient by presenting their images and letting them be a part of the treatment planning process. Everyone is unique, and we treat our patients as such. We pride ourselves on finding out what motivates our patients and helping them achieve optimal dental and overall health.
Shiny hair
Mix ½ tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and one cup of cold water: either place it into a container or a recycled shampoo bottle. Use the mixture after shampooing your hair a few times a week for a lustrous shine.
Sunburned skin
Soak in a warm bath with one cup of apple cider vinegar for 10 minutes to soothe your sunburned skin.
Reduce heartburn
Although it might seem like an oxymoron to treat stomach acid with an acid-containing vinegar, there is research suggesting that apple cider vinegar works by correcting your acidity levels, ultimately reducing heartburn. According to natural remedy experts, you should begin to feel relief shortly after taking a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar, followed by a glass of water. Note that apple cider vinegar will not give you relief if you have an ulcer.

Combine one part apple cider vinegar with one part water and thoroughly spread this spray onto your pet’s fur. Continue this process every day for about one week, and any fleas on your pet should be gone!
Mix ½ cup of apple cider vinegar with one cup of water and use this solution to clean microwaves, kitchen surfaces, windows, glasses and mirrors. Also, by using this product to clean your bathroom, kitchen or any other room, it will leave them smelling of apples!
For daily weight management
Mix two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar with 16 ounces of water. This combination can be sipped throughout the day. In a 2009 study published in Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry, it was found that subjects who consumed acetic acid (the main ingredient in apple cider vinegar) for 12 weeks experienced significant decreases in body weight, abdominal fat, waist circumference and triglycerides.
Clear your lymphatic system
This miracle vinegar helps to break up mucus and cleanse your lymph nodes, reducing the effects of allergies. It can also help stave off sinus infections and their related symptoms, such as sore throats and headaches.
Safely clean your home
By using apple cider vinegar in lieu of chemical products, we instantly decrease the presence of harmful substances in the home. As an organic and natural home sanitizer, you can rest assured that your family is not being exposed to toxic fumes.
Detoxify your body 12

Special Contribution to Austin MD by Texas Physical Therapy Are you experiencing local pain or widespread pain that interferes with day to day activities, hobbies or professions? If so, these symptoms can often be due to ‘trigger points’. Trigger points are hyperirritable, taut bands or knots in muscle tissue that can reproduce your pain or even refer pain to other areas of the body. Your physical therapist can identify these by using their hands to feel for the tight bands or knots in muscle tissue, which when compressed, cause symptoms. Finding trigger points is one thing; doing something about them is another. Trigger point dry needling (TDN) is a skilled, hands-on therapeutic procedure performed by trained providers including physical therapists who can decrease pain and increase your freedom and ability to exercise. Trigger point dry needling is rarely if ever used as a stand-alone treatment, but it is almost always combined with other physical therapy treatments, like specific therapeutic exercises, functional training and a variety of manual therapy interventions. Trigger point
dry needling should not be confused with acupuncture. While there are similarities, the
basis for Acupuncture is in traditional Chinese medicine while TDN takes a more Western, evidence-based and integrated approach. Even though we do not know the exact mechanism that makes TDN ‘work’, we do have research that demonstrates it is effective for relieving pain and improving function. To learn more or to schedule an appointment: visit www.texpts.com, call (888) 658-8483 or visit any of Texas Physical Therapy Specialists’ Austin locations.
Many conditions may respond to TDN treatment, including acute and chronic pain, and myofascial pain syndrome. It can be helpful when used as an aid during rehabilitation and for injury or surgery. Typically, patients see an immediate change in symptoms. Over the course of your care, TDN may be used one to three times as there is no predetermined number of treatments. Like any other medical procedure, side effects are always a concern. Trigger point dry needling has very low risk and the most common side effect is muscle soreness. Will it hurt? Because a very thin solid needle is used to penetrate the skin and stimulate the trigger points, you may feel a slight pinch or fleeting sharp prick. In addition, you may feel a muscle cramp or a muscle twitch often referred to as a “twitch response”. Most patients actually report feeling the muscle cramp and being bothered by it more than the sensation of the needle on the skin. In summary, TDN can be very effective when combined with other treatments. Our ultimate goal in physical therapy is to help you reach your fullest potential. We know you want to get back to the activities and lifestyle you love. Your physical therapist may include TDN as part of your overall treatment plan to help you do just that. Please let us know if you have any questions, we would be happy to try and answer them for you.

Single-Sided Deafness
Innovative device allows patients to hear in both ears Special Contribution to Austin MD by KVUE
“For the first time in six years, I could hear every word.” Imagine going through life and only being able to hear out of one ear. This condition is known as single-sided deafness. In the past, doctors claimed that there was no option or treatment aside from performing major invasive surgery, which involved placing a titanium plate into the skull. Fortunately, there is now a non-invasive and innovative product that allows those with single-sided deafness to hear in both ears. As the parts manager for Town North Nissan, Keith LeBlanc was used to living in a loud work environment. However, this made life more challenging because he could only hear out of one ear. "Having someone sitting right on my left side—my good ear—and not even being able to hear them was a problem,” said Keith LeBlanc, a ]IEV SPH [MXL WMRKPI WMHIH HIEJRIWW
LeBlanc dealt with this condition for 31 years of his life. “All I hear in that aspect is a lot of noise,” he said. Single-sided deafness was equally challenging for musician Stuart Hampton. “If I was at a party and there was a band playing, I was useless,” said Hampton. “It would all come into one big funnel, and the brain had a hard time sorting out the separate sound streams.” Both men’s lives changed for the better a few months ago, when Dr. Russell Briggs of the ENT Center of Austin introduced them to the SoundBite Hearing system. It uses the natural principle of bone conduction, where sound vibrations are transmitted through your bones to your inner ears. Sound from your good ear is sent to a small, computerized device worn on your teeth and is then transmitted to a small hearing device behind your impaired ear. 8LI HIZMGI MW ½XXIH XS XLI XIIXL %YHMSPSKMWX ']RXLME /IRRIH] ½RI tunes the frequencies for each individual. “It’s a great concept, and it opens the doors up for a lot a people

“To sit there and carry on a conversation with everyone around me, and to listen and hear them talk... I mean, it’s indescribable. It really is,” said LeBlanc. The total cost is about $6,000. Briggs says that most insurance companies pay about half of the cost. The SoundBite device does not restore hearing in your bad ear; however, it enables what you hear in your good ear to be heard in both ears.

F*Y9*6*Austin Real Estate with OMAR DYESS of RE/MAX 1 4. Alright, enough with the statistics. Let us talk about what people really want to hear. Where would you live if you were buying a home for investment or, for example, to raise your family? Austin’s real estate market is continuing to thrive, but the surrounding areas are also very charged due to affordability and demand in certain school districts. If you want investment concentrated on the areas where you see your larger commercial developments coming into play, look along the upcoming major roads or intersections.

1. How is the current real estate market here in Austin, TX? The market is on fire right now, with many more buyers than sellers in the marketplace. Austin area homes sales in December hit a new record high while inventory reaches hit an all time low. The statistics show 2013 ending with increased sales volume, home prices and demand. 2. What statistics can you share with local Austinites thinking of buying or selling in today’s market? We can only go off of prior sales facts, and while every neighborhood is different, this is why a comparable market analysis is crucial when thinking of selling or making an offer on your property. As a whole, in December 2013 Austin had sold 2,080 single family homes, up from 14 percent in December 2012. Relatively speaking, the Austin real estate market offered two months of inventory in December 2013, which was 21 days less than in December of 2012. This gave us a historical low for the Austin housing inventory according to the Austin Board of Realtors. 3. What is the median sale price of homes for someone looking to purchase in Austin? The median price is currently at $226,000, which is 8 percent more than this time last year, with homes spending an average of 52 days on the market, down from December 2012. Last year 27,298 A u s t i n area single family homes sold, which is up 19 percent from the previous year. We are definitely on the upswing, with folks spending lots of cash on the growing Austin market.
If you are starting a family and trying to choose a neighborhood, depending on price range, school district, amenities and the area of town you want to live in with, there are so many great areas to choose from, depending on your lifestyle. There are plenty of options to keep in mind, such as resale. The Austin area in general is a great city to live in. Almost anywhere is a great environment to raise a family in, buy your first home or even invest in a rental. 5. What would you say has the best chance of increasing in value? A) downtown condo, B) east Austin bungalow near the river or C) home on Lake Travis? Well, I would first have to roll with an East Austin Bungalow right now, and then a downtown Condo, only because of current affordability and the sheer amount of appreciation that is taking place in East Austin. I have heard of people who make large profit margins on tear-downs and new builds where the dirt is all the rage. A couple of years ago, downtown condos were starting to depreciate fast, and it seems that now they are selling very quickly with multiple offers along with the rest of the Austin area. People are becoming desperate for a place to live, and pretty soon you will have very little inventory to choose from, which will make sellers very happy when they make 5 to 10 percent more on average the next year.

s you step into Chef Tyson Cole’s house—his bungalow, rather—you embark on a journey through the many levels of sushi and Japanese cuisine. Constantly pushing the boundaries with both Uchi’s evolving culinary creations and talented staff, who—if you keep an open mind—will take you XLVSYKL ZEVMSYW XEWXIW ¾EZSVW ERH XI\XYVIW XS FVMRK you a playful take on the perfect bite, is at the forefront of what James Beard award-winning chef Tyson Cole strives to bring to his guests at Uchi every single day. Tyson Cole has such an enthusiasm for his craft, taking the aesthetic of Japanese cuisine and bringing it to the next level. Evolving a dish from one idea to something different is the whole concept behind innovative cuisine. Even with all of their amazing talent at Uchi, one of the biggest mistakes that many chefs make is failing to keep food simple by putting too much food on the plate rather than letting it speak for itself, Tyson says. “Sometimes our chefs come in and will start with 12 ingredients, and XLIR [I [MPP VYPI XLI HMWL HS[R XS EFSYX XLVII XS ½ZI SV sometimes completely change the concept. Other times a chef will make something once and it will be perfect.”
In a city where the most cutting edge, innovative culinary standards thrive, the Austin food scene has, no doubt, skyrocketed within the last decade. From pop-up restaurants to culinary DJ’s, Austin chefs continue to push the boundaries in culinary innovations. A U S T I N MD M A G A Z I N E . C O M

It is supposed to be bite-sized, and it is supposed to be fresh. As Tyson states in his book, Uchi:The Cookbook, “Our whole ‘bigger is better’ mentality is ridiculous. So it’s not that Americans don’t appreciate food; it’s just too easy here.”

Parents tell us not to play with our food, but for personal chef Eric Daniel, there are no limits to what can be brought to the table. He has always stood by the statement: We got to where we are by playing with our food. 4J1$4:(1!4!;,&49/19C/4!,(&4&14C/,=(K4L1!4&149=19/=C?4B'0/4,(41('1("4H'=%&4=$C/M4!,%;4 ?1$=4;,(B%"
Much like our attention spans, people seem to be turning to small plates. “We live our lives on social media, our phones, the internet; we have so many options of everything everyday,” says Tyson. “This idea to make all plates sharable and to give people chopsticks and silly things they want to try is the baseline for our concept, which has just blossomed from there.” Uchi is all about being very accessible. Being comfortable, inviting and not pretentious—a place where people can go to try many different things. Rather than going out to eat a steak and a baked potato, people instead want to try many things and have many options. “Sushi, quite literally, means vinegar rice. It has nothing to do with raw fish; it is about combining rice with various ingredients, small plates and Japanese cuisine as a whole,” Tyson says. People tend to have such odd and different views of sushi. And as for those who are still skeptical, Tyson advises to simply come in and see what everything is about. He admits that the first time he tried sushi, he thought it was disgusting, “but 99 percent of the time, people really like it and get addicted, which I did.” Whether it be at Uchi, cooking different meals for his wife and three little girls—all of whom have different tastes—or thoughts and dreams about food, Tyson Cole’s entire life revolves around food. Food is a necessity in our lives and tends to have a way of bringing people together. His love for cooking and coming up with innovative ways of preparing all the components of the perfect bite, with a hint of unexpected creativity, “is almost too real to be a part of and is quite cool,” Tyson says. Finding a balance in his life through controlled chaos and continuing to give talented people opportunities to learn and grow through doing something they love is at the forefront of what Tyson Cole does. “We play with our food,” he says, because why settle for safe and ordinary? Uchi looks forward to opening their new location in Dallas at the end of the year.
The next time you are having an event catered, think of personal chefs, too. “We take the pretentiousness out of your upscale event,” says Eric—it is a whole new way of dining. We go to restaurants, because that is what we are told to do when we want to go out and eat. Nobody says, “Oh, you have options.” For the most part, our options are limited to either fast food or a restaurant. Well, why can’t it be in your own home, or a rented vacation home? There is no major market telling you that you have to go to a restaurant to enjoy your birthday. The thing is, personal chefs specialize in cooking for less. The beauty of it is that Eric does it all in your home, so the cost will be less. And then I have some people who just want me to come to their house to make fresh, amazing burgers for two. It’s all over the board,” says Eric. One of his favorite sunset-inspired dishes that he likes to make is his southwest-blackened scallops paired with a roasted honey tomato relish and green onion vinaigrette. He wanted to get this vibrant red/orange sunset-sky color that he saw when he was out in east Texas one June, when the grass was so green, and duly decided to incorporate the green onion vinaigrette. The scallops are placed in the center on a bed of micro greens, literally like a sunset. Eric says that it was the most beautiful thing he has done yet.
