Editorial: With Thanksgiving behind us, and Christmas just around the corner, our lives are about to get a whole lot busier. Hopefully, after the Council meeting on December 2nd, we will have more time to focus on our family and holiday plans. If you are attending the Council of Governors meeting at the Abe Lincoln - Hilton Doubletree on Friday, December 1st, you are invited to the Christmas party at 8:00 pm. It will be a fun time! We will exchange a white elephant or $10 gift during game time with DG John Joseph, as our host. Please bring an appetizer to pass and what you would like to drink. Join us for this fun fellowship! International Leo Day is December 5th… CELEBRATE YOUR LEOS!! The month of December is Relieving Hunger…as Lions and Leos, we must do our part. I know ways to help. Of course, we can always write a check, but maybe this year you would consider serving a meal to the homeless at your local Mission or Church, or label cans and pack bags at your food pantry. Adopt needy families at your school or church…what a gratifying feeling knowing children will open presents Christmas morning and eat a festive meal. Whatever you do, I know it will be appreciated! Attention All Governors…Please bring your winning District Peace Poster to the Council meeting, and give them to me on Friday night at our 6:00 pm meeting. They are due December 1st. You will vote for one to go on to compete in the International Contest. I would like to wish you and your families a joyous
It’s the season to be Jolly! It is the season of festivals all over the world. This year even Santa came two months prior to Christmas in many malls in the US. We used to have only one Black Friday, i.e., day after Thanksgiving. This year Black Friday started much before Thanksgiving and it was not only Friday, every day of the week was Black Friday. Entire world is changing now to get more, make more and to be Jolly. Let us Lions all over the world come up with some change, something new to attract our membership in our clubs and to be Jolly to celebrate our success. This is year end and time for giving. We Lions are always very generous in giving and serving our communities. Mother Teresa said, “Give until it hurts!” God had blessed us with good jobs, family members and good health. Can we share something extra this season to be Jolly with our fellow citizens those who are in need? Many people have no winter coats to keep their body warm, no winter shoes to wear during snow fall and not enough food to feed their families during this festive season. As our motto says, “We Serve,” Lions, come forward to serve this season with collecting clothes, shoes, scarfs and gloves to cope up with winter. Every household have closets where we hang our clothes and never use them for years! It is time visit our closets and remove all clothes which we never touched for 2-3 years and donate them to needy people in our communities so that they can enjoy this winter little better than last years. -Dr. Austin D’Souza, PDG.ILStateEditor@gmail.com

As you can clearly see, we are off to a great start in MD-1! Four districts are already well beyond half of their goal for the year in just the first four months! And as a state, we are beyond 50% of our goal. 1-BK has already surpassed its total giving dollars from last year. 1-J already has nearly half its clubs participating. Congratulations to all! Our main focus this year is to get MORE CLUBS to participate. District Governors are encouraged to promote LCIF during their club visits, especially those clubs who have not contributed to LCIF in recent years. We are striving for a minimum of 50% club participation. At the same time, we want to thank and recognize those clubs which give year after year and encourage them to continue their philanthropic efforts to LCIF. Our help to those in need is needed more than ever. The Club LCIF Coordinator is a new postion this year. Currently we have less than 25% of our clubs statewide with a Club Coordinator named. If your club does not have an LCIF Club Coordinator named, please do so as quickly as possible and list the Lion and their contact information in MyLCI. It is vital that LCI has contact information for the Club Coordinator so that important LCIF information can be shared with them and their club.

President's Message The strength of our organization is determined by the strength of our clubs and our members. Just imagine how much greater our impact would be if every one of our 1.42 million Lions and 47,000 clubs takes their service to next level and achieves their full potential. That's why we made a top-to-bottom quality initiative a cornerstone of our strategic 5-year plan, LCI Forward. Membership growth is key to the future of our organization. But we need to do more than just invite new members. We need to engage them in club life and make sure they feel the Power of Service. And we must seek innovative ways to serve our communities and our members. That's why I am asking clubs to create a Club Quality Initiative plan. The Club Quality Initiative can help every club take their service and membership experience to the next level. Because when we create an enriching club experience, our members come back year after year. It's much more painful to lose an existing Lion than it is to miss out on a new one. But it will take the support of our leadership. Zone chairpersons, GLT coordinators and district leaders like you must familiarize yourselves with our club quality resources so you'll be prepared to assist clubs. Change takes time, but even the smallest changes can have a profound effect on our pursuit of excellence. Together we can realize our potential and serve more people in more ways than ever before!

Also, a new basketball goal was installed on one corner of the parking lot with the hopes that it will be used by young and old. The Carbondale Lions Club featured a program on juvenile diabetes at their meeting on Friday, November 10.

This group represents the Diabetes Resource Center through Southern Illinois Healthcare that promotes the health and wellness of all children with diabetes throughout southern Illinois. They specialize in working with children with diabetes and their families. They provide educational, developmental and emotional support needed to manage diabetes and reduce complications. Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not make or properly use insulin. Insulin helps the body use energy from the food we eat. Diabetes cannot be cured, but it can be treated and controlled. Camp Beta, 2017, was held at Touch of Nature and the Lions Club helped to sponsor that weekend for 19 campers with diabetes. They had a nurse assigned to each camper to make sure they checked their blood sugar 4 times a day. Some of the students had an app on their cell phone to help them regulate their medicine. Camp Beta literally changed lives in just one weekend. The name Beta is a medical term defining cells in the pancreas that produce, store and release insulin - the hormone responsible for regulating levels of glucose in the blood. The camp folks described it as follows: B - Believe in yourself. Better managed with a positive attitude. E - Empower yourself. You are in control, not diabetes. T - Talk. Be willing to ask for help and communicate with the right people about your needs. A - Act. Take action to help your body by being proactive, eating healthy and taking your medications.

Camp Beta was held on October 14 and October 15 with one overnight experience. This was the first time some of the young people had been away from home overnight. They all experienced different 'favorite parts,' from the zip line, hiking, snakes, horseback riding, fishing, hayride, campfires, etc. At first, the participants were very apprehensive, then later, some didn't want to go home. In 2018, they may attempt two nights out for the camp. The camp was free to the kids, but the actual cost figures out to be about $265 per student. Students can be sponsored with a donation of $300.
The Sycamore Lions worked their biggest annual fundraiser in the last week of October – their Food Trailer and Raffle in conjunction with their sponsorship of the 56th Annual Sycamore Pumpkin Decorating Contest and the towns Annual (5day) Pumpkin Festival. At Sunday’s parade, they also
celebrated LCI’s 100th Anniversary (see first attached picture). In the first ’65 Mustang, District 1J Governor John Hilliard, the President’s daughters and driver/owner Sycamore Lion Pete Springmire. The second ’65 Mustang is carrying Sycamore Lion Bud Wallace (a Lion for 57 years) and driver/owner Sycamore Lion Joe Woodward. The annual parade had 120 entries and was viewed by an estimated 50,000+ people. The Sycamore Clubs 100th Anniversary Project was completed earlier this year in the recently opened Sycamore Forest Preserve (see second picture). The club felt that this project, funding a pavilion in a County Forest Preserve open daily from sunrise to dusk, met the requirements as a Level 1 and 2 Legacy Project. Level 1 in that the pavilion is clearly visible from State Route 64 into the city from the east with its 30” Lions' logos and Level 2 as it provides for the recreational needs of the DeKalb County residents. DISTRICT 1-M CONVENTION District Governor Lori Bennett, husband Lion Steve, and the Convention Committee executed an impressive weekend of enjoyment and education on Friday, October 27th and Saturday, October 28th at the Thelma Keller Convention Center in Effingham, Illinois. “I want to thank everyone who participated in the 2017 District 1M Convention. Because of you, we were able to raise funds for the Catholic Charities food pantry in Effingham, donate to disaster relief efforts through LCIF, recycle hundreds of pairs of

eyeglasses and several hearing aids, offer vision screenings for preschoolers, spread diabetes awareness, and most of all - we had a great time.” 1-M District Governor Lori Bennett
DG Lori’s special guest International Director Patricia Vannett of 5-NW, Mandan, ND addressed the convention on behalf of International President, Dr. Naresh Aggarwal. She was a highlight of the convention, giving a rousing speech “Different Types of Flowers make a Beautiful Garden” that inspired us to stand behind and support our new international projects of diabetes awareness and children’s cancer. ID Patricia was assisted by her husband PDG Kevin as she added more and more accomplishment ‘flowers’ into the garden box. Wait a minute…. We need a bigger box!
Another highlight was the “Ask 1! Lions Under 40” panel as they candidly answered questions and discussed their thoughts and suggestions on how to attract younger members into our Lions clubs. Lions Vincent Maretti, Jesse Corbin, Rolando Monte Del Orca, Gene Linder, Tracy Acord and Eric Montgomery have been invited to share their insights at the MD1 State Convention! Thank You, young Lions, for stepping up to make a difference in our clubs in District 1-M and throughout the state of Illinois. 14
PFP, PDG Steve Ferguson (Convention Chair) tried to stump us Friday evening at Trivia Nite, but our Lions are on the ball! We had fun ‘in spades’ while cards and dice game competitions were going on in the Hospitality Room, and everyone took frequent breaks to visit the yummy treats and drinks provided by DG Lori’s home club of Paris, IL. The Friday evening games and Trivia donations were given to LCIF. There were many tables filled with Silent Auction baskets - enough to ensure another awesome convention in 2018! Peace Posters were voted on, although it was VERY difficult to choose between the childrens’ uniquely-drawn presentations. The newly-revamped 2018 calendars were handed out to the district clubs to benefit the District 1-M Humanitarian Fund. They are filled with information this year, including our clubs’ activities that we are invited to participate in! Lion Jay was one of nine very deserving candidates. 1VDG Darren VanDuyn was presented a “Bachelor’s Degree of Leadership” from Lions University. 1PDG Moe Wimbley was given an International President’s Certificate of Appreciation from IPIP Bob Corlew for his dedication as District Governor 20162017. TIME TO REMEMBER….. Lion Caleb McGregor, Pastor of the Stonington United Methodist Church, presented the Time to Remember Program eulogizing the many good works and service of 24 1-M Lions who passed. Lions placed a red rose into a vase for each one, in remembrance.

Genoa Club recently awarded its MVP trophy to Mr. Mike Ross. Mike was selected for this award and was voted unanimously by the club membership because of his active participation in the Genoa Lions Club activities. Mike is always there to help, volunteer and put in the physical effort needed to make an event a success. He is active in our fund-raising events and our service projects, whether it is picking up trash along the highway or selling mum plants for our fall fund raiser. Mike is truly an example of one who serves his community. The Genoa Lions club is proud to present this award to an outstanding member. Mike sets a great example for all our members. If you are interested in joining the Genoa Lions Club, contact Jerry Helland at 815 7844865. The Lions' motto is “We Serve”. The Genoa Lions have been quite active this fall and would like to publicly applaud the volunteers that chaired our efforts in October and November. Our club was responsible for manning the entrance gate at all of the Genoa-Kingston High School Football games in 2017, which was 5 games including our lone home game in the play-offs. Unfortunately, Dixon (ranked 4th in the state) beat us a second time to send the boys home. The lions efforts to man the gate was chaired by Lion Chad Pacey with assistance from Lion President Jerry Helland. The club will be donating the $500 that we earned to the GenoaKingston High School Boys and Girls Soccer team for equipment that might not already in the budget for 2018.

The club has adopted a local family to receive Christmas presents and a gift card from Hy-Vee, this effort will be performed by Lion Chad Pacey this year and the club has also chosen to assist a local resident that is having eye surgery in Madison at the University of Wisconsin in addition to donating over $1,000 to Lions International for Hurricane Disaster relief. Lion Chad Pacey will also be chairman of our Christmas tree light recycling program this winter, he will have receptacles at Kuhn’s Christmas Trees at the Genoa Masonic Lodge, Tobinson’s Ace Our club participated in the district Candy Day on October 21st having gotten rained-out on the 13th. Lions Jeff & Gini Baker organized our efforts and we grossed over a $1,000 in donations, so thank you Genoa residents for pitching in to support your local Lions. On October 18th, we inducted a new member, George Meckel, sponsored by Lion Gene Bradford, into the club, bringing our membership back to 33. On November 15, we inducted our newest member Brent O’Daniell, sponsored by Lion President Helland, the ceremony being performed by past president Bob Becker.
The club hosted the Diabetic Retinopathy bus on October 12th on rte. 23 near the McDonalds. The 3hour free bus was manned by Lions VanDerHeyden and Wilkinson. Thirteen community members had their eyes tested that evening by Terry from the Lions of Illinois Foundation.

ELLEN NGUYEN CARBONDALE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Ellen is in the 6th grade and shows a real excitement to learn. She is a straight A student, is a fantastic role model and all of her teachers like to have her in their class. She likes science, plays the flute in the band and can also play the piano. She does computer design with some of her friends in the library.

Gary Metro reported that a total of $2000 from the club and Foundation will be sent to the American Red Cross for hurricane relief to aid victims of Harvey, Irma and Maria. He also noted that $1000 from the Foundation will be made available to Carbondale Green Earth for upgrading the David 18

The Joliet Noon Lions club held their annual Breakfast with Santa on November 18th. Including hard working Lions members, they also had 6 students from Joliet Catholic Academy helping out all morning.
One of the joys of being a District Governor is to present Membership Milestone Awards during Club visits. International sends the Governor the Chevron Milestone tabs which mark 10, 15, 20, etc years as a member of the Association. This year 262 1-BK members are celebrating a membership milestone. We have 5 members who will be celebrating 55 years of membership this year. A special moment at a recent Joliet Noon meeting occurred when Governor John Joseph was able to

While visiting the Mendota Lions, DG John Joseph presented Membership Chevrons to 30 year member Lion Bob Costello and 10 year member Lion Ruth Delhotal.
The Joliet Noon Lions were on hand helping to distribute food at Farragut Grade School in Joliet. They partner with the Northern Illinois Food Bank and other service groups and churches to distribute food for the school and neighborhood families in need. 23

Last fall, Dundee Lions gathers at Lions Park in East Dundee to dedicate a legacy tree in celebration of Lions Clubs International 100th Anniversary and Dundee Township Lions Club's 80th Anniversary.
For about six months of the year, from Memorial Day through Veterans Day, more than 20 American flags wave proudly over the streets of downtown Sandwich. Club members purchase, maintain, store, put up and take down the flags each year. This is one of the many ways in which the Sandwich Lions Club serves its community.
The Bartlett Lions Club supported the Bloomingdale Lions Club Socktober sock collection by collecting 139 pairs of socks. Socks are the most needed, but least donated, article of clothing in homeless shelters.

PDG Lion Ron Fangusaro, with the aid of a walker and driver, 1st VDG Lion Susan Galvez, attended a recent Elmhurst Leo Club meeting at St. Peters Church. The Leos and Lion Rob Hallberg were happy to welcome back Lion Ron. The Leos sponsored their 8th annual Thanksgiving Food Drive and assisted the Elmhurst Lions Club by collecting donations of gently-worn coats/clothing (men's, women's, young adult & children's). The Leos picked up all clothing donations during the weekend of Nov. 25th - 26th.

Naperville Noon Lions Club recently presented a grant in the amount of $8,000 to Donka, Inc., located in Wheaton, that provides computer training and job readiness services to individuals with physical, visual, and limited learning disabilities. Through use of computers and assistive technology, these individuals become more selfsufficient and independent members of the community.
