Today on 20th 2018, The Mounds Lions Club collected $1,500 for the Telethon of Stars (add to handicapped children). This award was for the most money donated by a Lions Club. Lion Josie Eason, host of Telethon, Lion Kanesha Eurales, Immediate Past District Governor Derek Eurales, Club President Lion Retha Eurales and TLC Director Lion Tommye Robb. Money raised in Illinois stays in Illinois. Tommye Robb was given a check for over $31,000. W e are Lions and we ROAR AS WE SERVE .

From MD1 Council Chair: Greetings MD1 Lions! What an exciting time to be a Lion! The upcoming District Conventions are always unique to each district, and they are so welcoming. It is always nice to attend others conventions to hear their international guests. Many times, I have learned new ideas or gained a different perspective on areas of Lionism. Our MD-1 State Convention is guaranteed to be a fun time of fellowship and learning. Let’s get as many Lions to attend this event. Hoping to learn a little about another culture, I am eager to spend time with 1st Vice President Choi. It will be interesting to know what direction he will take us as Lions. March is Eye Donor Awareness month… How many of you will donate your corneas or sclera? What an amazing gift we can give to another person. As this is a very personal decision, please make certain your family knows your wishes, if you are not registered with the Secretary of State. We are fortunate to have Eversight, Illinois in Chicago, our local Eye Bank. It is a tremendous organization who works with our own Lions of Illinois Eye Research Institute. Special Olympics 50th Anniversary Since Special Olympics originated in Chicago, the celebration will happen right here in the Windy City, and Lions Clubs International will be celebrating, too. There will be a week-long celebration from July 1520, 2018. Several clubs have volunteered to host a hospitality event close to downtown Chicago. We are in need of 2 more clubs to come forward. This 2

event will include the International sports teams, coaches and guests coming from 21 countries, including the USA to compete in football (soccer). The games will begin on Tuesday, July 17th. In March, we march down to conventions In last month I published a special MD1 Districts’ Convention Issue. Same material is attached with this issue so that you will not miss any conventions in MD1. All district conventions in MD1 except District 1M which was last year, start from the month of March and end in April. Then comes our State Convention which will be on May 18th to 20 th at the President Abraham Lincoln Hotel & Conference Center in Springfield. Many Lions ask questions – do we need conventions? We are humanitarian association and why we have to spend all this money for 3-4 days and have fun for ourselves? Yes, we do need conventions to have fellowship from all clubs in our district and guests from other districts. We spend our own money from our

pockets and we are not asking any donations to our conventions from the public. Now the question is – how many lions, leos from our district attend conventions? Do we fail in attracting Joe Lion to our conventions? We have to think about this seriously so that many of our lions take part in conventions and take home some friendship, learn something new from other clubs and listen to International Speakers regarding world lionism. Also meet District Leaders including many PDG’s. Let us mark down dates of District Convention in MD1 – State of Illinois. Visit at least couple of districts in our neighborhood and see what they are doing diferent than us. Experience will make a lion – Perfect Lion!

There are three proposed amendments to our Constitution and By-Laws being presented to the delegates at our upcoming 2018 State Convention. Two of these proposed amendments were developed at the request of the Council of Governors and one came directly from the Constitution and ByLaws Committee. A brief summary of the proposed amendments is shown below as well as the amendments. These will also be printed in the regular March issue of our Lions of Illinois Magazine. Knollenberg, Chairperson MD-1 Constitution and By-Laws Chair Resolution # 1 - Ethics and Conduct: This proposed amendment would create a new Article III which would require all District Governors, the Council Chairperson and all State Chairpersons to read and sign the Ethical Standards and Conduct policy specific to their position. The Council of Governors recommends adoption of the amendment. The Constitution and By-Laws Committee is neutral on this proposed amendment Resolution # 2 – Recommendation Clarification: This proposed amendment to Article XIII, Section 2 of the MD-1 Constitution will clarify the definition of the term ‘recommendation’ as used in this Article of our Constitution. Both the Council of Governors and the Constitution and ByLaws Committee recommend adoption of this proposed amendment. Resolution # 3 – Teleconference Meetings: This proposed amendment to Article XI, Section 7 to the MD-1 Constitution will correct language pertaining to amending the Lions of Illinois Policy Manual. Both the Council of Governors and the Constitution and By-Laws Committee recommend adoption of this proposed amendment.

1A - BEST CONVENTION IN MD1 18

The Lions of Illinois along with Lions throughout the Midwest have been asked to help out and attend the celebration of the Special Olympics Unified Games that will be held at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Illinois. The games will be from July 15 th through July 22nd, 2018. Around 800 athletes and coaches will be coming to Chicago from around the world. They will be housed at the Westin Hotel located on Michigan Avenue, downtown Chicago. During their time in Chicago, the athletes will be participating in a soccer tournament as well as enjoying the sights and sounds of Chicago. The Special Olympic Associations is looking to the Lions and Leos for their support of the games through the attendees at the events themselves, and also in volunteering to help in the variety of areas. The volunteerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s commitment can vary in positions to as many days or hours that you would be willing to help out in this special event. Lions and Leos will be needed during the games - ball boy or girl and score keepers, as well as with the teams during their stay here in Chicago - Team Liaisons, hotel greeters & information and interpreters. There are 24 teams with approximately 30 members representing the different countries that have qualified to participate in this tournament. On Thursday, July 19, 2018, the Lions have been asked to have a Host Night for these special athletes and their coaches. The idea is to have our guests experience something other than the hotel while in Chicago. They are looking at 4 to 6 venues that the teams would be divided between, to visit and enjoy 50

the hospitality of Chicago. Clubs are being asked to serve as Hosts for this evening. The time and places are not totally determined as of now, but we are in search of clubs that would like to get involved as a host for the different venues. Our intent is to have Lions Clubs join with another one or two to help in hosting the athletes at one of the venues. The selection of the venue would have to be within 30 minutes of downtown Chicago and to be determined by the clubs that would be the host there. The transportation would be taken care of by the Special Olympics, but the cost of the event would be that of the host. The host would also receive a stipend from the Special Olympics for each team that was there. The event could be either in the afternoon or evening depending on the teams attending the event in respect to their tournament schedule. The hope is to have all athletes back to the hotel by 10:00 pm. The details of the menu would be determined by the Host Clubs. Any special needs for food would be coordinated by the Special Olympic Committee and the Host Clubs. Right now, we are looking to you to talk to your club and see if you would be interested in being a Host Club and adopt a venue. As more information becomes available, we would get back to you and let you know which teams will be coming to your venue, so you can start to communicate with them. It will be a great event to host and experience the excitement these special athletes have for their sport.

The Lions Clubs International Convention in Las Vegas is less than five months away. The convention opens on Friday, June 29 at the MGM Grand Resort. The final plenary session along with the installation of your District Governor by our newly elected International President, Gudrun Yngvadottir from Gardabaer, Iceland (our First Woman President), will be Tuesday morning, July 3, 2018. The main venue is the MGM Grand Resort with the Illinois Delegation staying at the Luxor Hotel & Casino about 15 minutes away. There are shuttle buses running during the convention hours for the attendees for their convenience. The International parade will be on Saturday, June 30, 2018. The parade will step off at 8:30 am. The Council of Governors have secured a double decker bus for “some’ of the Illinois Delegation to ride in. We will still be in need of marchers to carry the Street Banners and Flags that we have traditionally used over the years. I will be looking to you to help on parade day so we can again display the Lions Pride for Illinois. The parade uniform will be the same as in the past years – dark or khaki long or short pants, white polo shirt and the MD1 blue vest. I will have an order form for the polo shirts and vests available on the MD1 Web Site.

As Lions are about tradition, so are the Illinois and the Hawaiian Lions. This year we will have a gettogether with the Hawaiian Lions at the International Convention. The event is scheduled for Sunday, July 1st at the Luxor Hotel & Casino following the close of the Opening Plenary Session. We have finalized the location - “Egyptian Ballrooms E-H” and the time is 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm. We are still talking with the Hawaiian Lions of either having an Ice Cream Social or Pizza Bar. Cost and menu will be finalized shortly. Please watch the MD1 Web Site for more details. Sorry, but by now you know you have missed the early registration fee for the 2018 International convention in Las Vegas. The fee is $200.00 per person along with a $200.00 guest room deposit. This registration fee is good till March 31, 2018. After April 1, 2018 and on site, the fee will be $225.00 per person. For children 17 and under the fee is $20.00 and for the Omega Leo it is $100.00. The deadline for advance registration is May 1, 2018. This is the same deadline to submit a refund request for registration, housing and/or ticket cancellation. You can register on line by going to LCI home site and click on LCICON. There you will find the registration form as well as all the information in regards to the convention schedule and seminars. The Las Vegas Host Committee is looking for VOLUNTEERS. Avon Lions Club President Dave Tolley hosted Peyton Hamilton for lunch to honor her successful completion of her first semester at Quincy University qualifying her to receive the Lions Club scholarship she earned. Peyton graduated from Abingdon Avon High School last year and is studying for a degree in nursing at Quincy University. The West Frankfort Lions Club has joined with the Old King Coal Festival Committee and the Coal Miner's Memorial Committee to help bring awareness of the influence that the Coal Mining Industry has had on West Frankfort. The Old King Coal Festival is held every year with a carnival, entertainment and fun, fun, fun. The updated total earned at our Soup Supper was $771.10, slightly higher than what I had reported. However, the big boost came from a matching grant from Modern Woodmen, thanks to Jennifer Lees. Modern Woodmen gave Orion Lions Club another $771.10 to bring our total up to $1,542.20. Thanks,

Modern Woodmen! The Genoa Lions invited the 12 finalists in the district Spelling Bee to dinner this Wednesday night (1/17) at the Masonic Temple in Genoa. Three students from 5th, 6 th, 7th, and 8th grades were successful in their class spelling bees and ready to spell their way to the regionals to be held at

Kishwaukee College in Malta in March. The winner of this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Genoa-Kingston Spelling Bee was Bryanna Sonntag an 8th grader at Genoa-Kingston Middle School.

The Leaf River Lions took on as a Centennial Project the replacement of the commercial refrigerator and stove in the Leaf River Bertolet Memorial building. Both appliances were original from when the building was constructed in the early 1970â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. The replacement of the stove and refrigerator cost right near $10,000.00 and will benefit the Leaf River Community for many years to come. The Leaf River Lions are putting the new appliances to use during the winter months when they serve a breakfast every second Saturday. International and talked at length about its’ global impact and what more we could do to serve others. Mrs. Kelly Boettger gave a slide show and presented information on DG Boettger’s charity for this year, $40,000 in donations for an addition to “Restoring Hope Transplant House” in Middleton Wisconsin. The Genoa Lions donated $500 to this house that is a haven for tissue transplant patients and their spouses at the University of Wisconsin/Madison Research Hospital. This donation brought his quest to $25,000 with about 3 or 4 months left in his year as the District Governor for district 1D. The Genoa Lions of District 1D hosted District Governor Steve Boettger and his wife Kelly for dinner this past Wednesday, the 21st. DG Boettger gave a short presentation on behalf of Lions 63

DG Boettger was asked to induct the Genoa Lion’s newest member, Joseph P. Ratliff, a.k.a. Big Joe, which he did with panache. Big Steve pinning Big Joe was kismet. The Genoa Lions will be having a joint meeting with the Sycamore Lions on the last Wednesday of March and look forward to a fine meal from the DeKalb County V.A.C. at the Regale Center in Sycamore.
