Council Chair Speaks:

them to join; don’t you think it is worth our effort to ask them to stay? Membership! Membership!! Membership!!!

Let’s make 2015 the year we change the downward trend. Let’s go upward and onward.

The most important thing every club needs to work on is, you know, that really hard, scary, make your throat dry up, I don’t want to hear it AGAIN, thing called “MEMBERSHIP.”

Remember, “Do Something”, “Get Started”, and “Ask 1”

Do you know what your District Governors goals are for membership this year? If not ask. Do you have membership goals in your Lions Clubs? Membership should be a project of not only every Lion but also of every Lions club. It should be a high priority project at least twice a year, October and April (Membership Months) and April is just a month away. The hardest part of a project is getting started. DG Buzz says “Do Something” President Preston says “Ask 1” Now is the time to “get started”, build a membership plan in your club. Make a List of potential new Lions. Make a list of your service projects to share with your potential new Lions or better yet invite them to one. Prepare today and you will be successful in April.

“Do The Right Thing”

New members are out there, lots of them, waiting to be asked to join the world’s largest service organization. It’s our job to share with them the satisfaction we get from being Lions. To show everyone the great work we do every day assisting our fellow humans at home and around the world. Wear your Lions pin every day. Be Proud of our successes. Advertize with you pin, your smile, and your heart. As important as membership is, so is retention. Get those members that don’t come to meetings anymore back on track. Ask them why they aren’t involved in the club any longer and try to reconcile the problem. Saving a member is probably worth the same as adding 2 new members. We asked

Editorial:

Aren’t you proud to be a Lion? Do you know what the Lions are doing all over the world? Nobody and I repeat – NOBODY can beat our humanitarian service, our membership and our community involvement. We made this possible by having strong leaders, motivators and inspirers with dreams. We are the pioneers in serving visually impaired with White Canes, Leader Dogs; through SightFirst challenges and successes as World Leaders in serving humanity. Our passion to humanitarian spirit second to none. Without passion there is no motivation; without motivation there is no success and without success there is no inspiration to do more with high spirit. Now the time is approaching to select our leaders. As human beings lions too involved in politics. My humble request to you is – select your leaders with due credit and strong believers in serving others. Keep aside your friendship, relationship and personal agendas. We need dedicated leaders who can prove in our Lionism their dreams come true to help less fortunate one soul at a time to live a better life just like you and me.

Our International President is asking us to strengthen the pride and this is possible only by selecting strong leaders who the beleivers of lionism. Let us strengthen our membership. Reach 2 million mark by 2017 and celebrate our centenary celebrations in Chicago where Lionism was born. -PDG Austin D’Souza, Editor ILStateEditor@gmail.com LEADERSHIP CORNER The MD1 Convention is just around the corner. Slated for May 14-17, 2015 at the Bloomington-Normal Marriott Hotel and Convention Center, 201 Broadway Street, Normal, Illinois, this is a highlight of any Lions’ year. But, some Lions have asked, “Why should I go to the MD1 convention? I’m not a District Governor or Past District Governor. What’s in it for me?” Well, here are the Top Ten Reasons Any Lions Should Attend the MD1 Convention. 1. It will be FUN! Friday night in the Hospitality Rooms it will be “Fun and Games in the Tropics”. Get that Hawaiian shirt or Moo Moo out of the back of the closet. 2. There is a Silent Auction and a Live Auction. There is always something for everyone! 3. There are exciting seminars: What is LCI Up to? Lions Clubs Having Fun and Leader Dog Learn about what it means to be a Lion. 4. Recognition will be given to well deserving Lions at the State Awards Luncheon. Let’s celebrate!! 5. Lions will learn what our Lions of Illinois Foundation is doing at the annual breakfast. Do you have a check from your club to present at the Parade of Pledges? 6. Lions from all over Illinois will meet, greet, and eat. Ideas will be flowing. Take one home to your club to start a new fundraiser or design a new service project.

7. Voting will take place on two amendments and the merger of Districts 1CN and 1G as well as PID Bud Wahl’s bid for Second International Vice President. Each club gets a vote based on the number of members. Be sure your club’s voice is heard. 8. This is an opportunity to brag about your club. Each club is unique. This is a chance to tell others what your club does, how it does things, and why your club makes a difference. 9. Being a Lion means being part of the largest most active service organization in the WORLD. Chat with others who understand your passion for service. Meet our honored guest, International Director Linda Tincher. 10. HAVE FUN! As Lions we work hard all year to meet needs locally and globally. The MD1 Convention is just the place to relax, rejuvenate, and rededicate ourselves to service! -Jama Wahl, MD1 State GLT Chairperson jamawahl@yahoo.com

MEMBERSHIP CORNER: What Happens In Spring? Yesterday, February 19th, was the coldest February 19th on record in Chicago. We experienced a new record low temperature for the day as well as a new record for the coldest high temperature for the day. What does any of this have to do with Spring? Nothing. The only thing that comes to mind is the hope that Spring gets her act together and shows up real soon. There are usually a few things that start in Spring. One of them is a pickup in home construction. Those ready-mix trucks start pouring foundations and the carpenters start erecting walls with all the other trades arriving after them. True, some individual houses are being built no matter what the weather is. But larger projects begin in earnest. Spring becomes a season of building. Houses, road construction, school additions and other projects are off and running. Is your Lions Club going to become part of the building season? It should be. Now is the time that you should be looking at various ways to build your Club. Talk with your District GLT Coordinator about the Club Excellence Process.

By utilizing this program your Club can become better than it already is. Another thing your Club can do is to build, or increase, the number of members currently on your roster. Where do I look for new members you ask? There are many places. To name a few: family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, golf or fishing buddies, poker (or other card/board games) buddies and many others. Contact me at the phone or email address at the bottom of this article and I will send you 2 pages worth of where to look and what to do. Everything around us is growing including nature and housing. All of our Clubs should do the same. More members mean more hands to perform any task at hand. This is true for both fundraisers and service projects. Make sure your community is aware of what you are doing and why you are doing it. If your town looks very favorably on your Club, recruiting new members becomes easy. Get the word out! And do it with enthusiasm!
