Message from the President

The changing landscape of theological education presents institutions like Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary with disruptive challenges and inspired opportunities to envision innovative ways of equipping church leadership. As congregations and denominations undergo profound transformations, our expectations for clergy, religious educators, officers, and other Christian leaders are constantly redefined. It is then the role of seminaries like ours to be open to the voice of the Spirit who empowers our equipping and, in response to that disposition, to remain always receptive and adaptive.

This annual report represents our latest efforts at following God’s direction as we provide the proper context and instruction to further the ministry of those seeking formation to serve Christ through the service of the Church. Initiatives such as the Faithful Preaching Project and the Cultivating Ideas faculty webinars reflect our intent to promote collaborative partnership in ministry as we seek to form clergy and lay people alike, making the “priesthood of all believers” not only a doctrinal principle of our Reformed tradition but an applied expression of our faith as well.

Our support, management, and hosting of the nationally renowned Hispanic Scholars Program and a new partnership with the Hispanic Youth Leadership Academy are testaments to our unwavering commitment towards fashioning a space of learning that prepares leaders to engage in an increasingly pluralistic world. In this world, intercultural skills are crucial, and our seminary is dedicated to training our leaders with the necessary tools to navigate the multilingual and culturally diverse environment of the 21st Century.

As we envision a church that endures into the future, Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary plays a vital role. Through our 787 Collective, Masters of Youth Ministry, and the Progressive Youth Ministry program, we equip leadership that intentionally listens to and cares for a new generation of Christians. These programs are not just strategic responses to the institutional needs of the church; they are palpable signs of hope for the ongoing perseverance of Christ’s gospel, transforming our world and shaping the church’s future.

In faithfulness to our mission, we continue to educate servant-leaders to engage the ethical challenges of the time with measured reasoning and imagination. Pursuing this mission depends on our persistence in embracing this demand and the generous support you provide as stewards of God’s gifts under your care. We are deeply appreciative of you and the way you minister with us to fulfill this faithful work, for echoing the words of Paul’s letter to the Philippians, “I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work in us will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

In Faith

Message from the Board Chair

As I write to you, this week included one of my favorite moments in the life of Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary: the publication of the inaugural photograph of the incoming class. Like a baptism or a wedding, seeing new students begin their formal entry into theological education is a joyful reminder to the church that God is not finished with us yet. While Austin Seminary has labored at all levels to pursue our mission and ministry this year, we remember with thanksgiving that the Spirit has been at work, too, summoning these students to become who their Maker intends by drawing them into our beloved community to transform them for the practice of ministry.

Our outstanding staff and faculty have worked creatively and collaboratively to maintain our standard of excellence in theological education and to advance innovative opportunities for our promising future. This year, we successfully maintained enrollment in the fall, and we enjoyed the privilege of celebrating the May 2024 graduates. We received grant funding from the Lilly Endowment to manage the Hispanic Scholars Program (formerly the Hispanic Summer Program). We achieved the acquisition of Progressive Youth Ministry, and we are preparing for their upcoming conference this fall on campus. We launched the Faithful Preaching Project, designed to instill deeper faith in congregations.

In June, Austin Seminary was approved to continue to prepare United Methodists for Ordination.

Like many higher education institutions, Austin Seminary continues to work to meet enrollment and inflationary cost challenges. Nevertheless, the Seminary’s financial position is strong. President José Irizarry’s visionary leadership continues to bear much fruit and is now supported by a full cabinet, with the arrival of our new Vice President for Institutional Advancement, The Rev. Ryan Arnold, who will guide our development efforts strategically and skillfully.

As I conclude my time as Chair of the Board, I have deep gratitude and complete trust in Chair Denise Pierce and Vice Chair Chris Currie, and I know the Seminary will benefit from their exemplary leadership. Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary is abundantly equipped to lead the church into a future brimming with hope.

Grace and peace,

Rev. Keatan King Board Chair, January 2021 to June 2024

LIVING THE MISSION:

2024 Graduate Feature

Langley Hoyt graduated in May, earning the Master of Divinity degree and the Alsup-Frierson Award in Biblical Exegesis and Hermeneutics. Originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Greenville, South Carolina, Langley chose Austin Seminary because of its reputation as a residential institution grounded in community life. This decision was aided by two additional factors: the location, down the street from the Seminary of the Southwest, where her partner studied, and the generous financial aid made possible through donations to the endowment and annual fund.

While at Austin Seminary, Langley received an affirmation in her call to Christian ministry through coursework, classmates, professors, and practicum placement. She started her practicum at First Presbyterian Church in Austin, where she recalls her duties on Ash Wednesday. “I helped with the imposition of ashes,” Langley said, “and the intimacy and vulnerability of imposing ashes on the foreheads of the congregants attuned me to God moving in our shared lives together and the sacred duties of a pastor.”

“In Dr. Park’s courses, I gained an appreciation for the communities of people who passed along and eventually wrote down stories that struggle with such questions as ‘Why are we suffering?’ and ‘Where is God?”. Professor Park applauded Langley’s dedication to her studies, saying, “Langley is a professor’s dream. A sensitive, empathetic, and thoughtful reader and writer, she doesn’t shy away from deeply thinking about the biblical text and asking challenging questions about it. Langley’s quiet gentleness allows her to hear and be attuned to the various voices that emerge from the biblical text, sometimes in a whisper.” In Hebrew Bible exegesis courses, Langley and her peers wrestled with the humanity and complexity of biblical characters, and Langley attested, “These stories challenge us to address the harm humans do to one another and listen for the Holy Spirit who calls us to better, more faithful ways of being in relationship with one another.”

After graduation, Langley and her husband, Liam, and their dog, Avett, moved to Raleigh, North Carolina, where she began a residency as a chaplain at a local hospital. Later this year, Langley plans to be ordained to the ministry of Word and Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

Langley noted Dr. Suzie Park, associate professor of Old Testament, as her favorite professor. She said,

Langley Hoyt is an exemplary representative of the amazing students and most recent Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary alumni.

Programs

Austin Seminary served 167 master- and doctorate-level graduate students and an additional 52 certificate students this past year.

Lifelong Learning

Lifelong Learning provided several continuing educational opportunities, which generated nearly 600 attendees. The programming included the popular and ongoing Cultivating Ideas series, which saw 225 attendees participate in 18 webinars led by Austin Seminary faculty.

This Fall, join us ONLINE to hear some of Austin Seminary’s faculty’s most compelling, fresh ideas. On Thursdays, faculty will share ideas and insights they have been cultivating in teaching, writing, and ministry. Come and gather seeds of scholarship to grow in your church and community.

Each session is on a Thursday from noon to 1:00 p.m. (CT). Sign up online! These workshops are FREE. Is there a conflict in your schedule? After editing, all registrants will receive a link to view the webinar(s).

The Faithful Preaching Project is an initiative funded by a grant from the Lilly Endowment, Inc. It is designed to help preachers instill deeper faith in their listeners and empower them to live out their faith more fully in worship and the community. Offerings include two simultaneous peerlearning cohorts and multiple opportunities for preachers and congregants to develop their skills and abilities for faith-sharing in worship. The inaugural cohorts started with 16 clergy members and 17 church leaders. The first preaching workshop, open to anyone interested in enhancing their preaching, is scheduled for November 2, 2024, in-person at Austin Seminary and online.

787 Collective report

This year, the 787 Collective made significant strides in engaging with young adults and ministry leaders. The Collective Voice, a podcast that centers young adults’ voices and experiences in their ongoing faith exploration and formation, was successfully launched (scan the QR code to subscribe).

Additionally, the 787 Collective completed its first campaign. Campaigns are initiatives funded by the 787 Collective and led by a young adult to center young adult leaders in work that supports and celebrates their vocational gifts and yearnings in ways that enrich the mission of the church. James Martin led the first campaign and created an 11-minute documentary about his powerful story of faith and community. (Scan the code to watch.)

Moreover, in cooperation with Harvest College Ministry Colaboratory, the 787 Collective published “The Next Is Now.” This research offers important insights into the exciting yet challenging lives of young adults post-college, ways college ministry can prepare students for ongoing further formation beyond graduation, and ways local churches can include and encourage young adults in ministry. The research was shared with over thirty judicatories, and 787 Collective leaders gathered with judicatory leaders to discuss strategies for supporting the transition from college to young adult ministry.

This year also saw the formation of the Collective Council, a group of nine young adults who meet five times a year to help guide and shape the 787 Collective’s efforts. The approach is primarily qualitative, as much of the data is rooted in storytelling rather than numbers. You are invited to listen to the stories via the QR codes.

Houses of Hope report

Houses of Hope has made slow yet exciting progress. Three new churches were welcomed into the discernment process. Additionally, two other congregations have partnered with Houses of Hope for upcoming events. Four other congregations completed aspects of the program, and the groundwork laid by these churches was instrumental in their growth and in helping Houses of Hope leadership discern and refine the process as they expand their reach and impact. This momentum positions Houses of Hope for continued growth as more congregations embrace the vision of building hope and transformation in their communities.

Sustaining The Mission

In Fiscal Year 2024, Austin Seminary continued to meet the challenges of the times and exceed expectations. Special projects, including the commissioning of the McMillan/McCord solar panel project and the replacement of the lift in Trull, led the physical plant activity. Gifts were strong during a year of multiple staffing transitions throughout the institution. Partnerships, like the one with the Hispanic Scholars Program, brought new challenges to the Seminary’s life.

It is difficult to give out financial information whilst in the middle of the annual audit. The figures are preliminary but reflect exemplary stewardship of the Seminary’s assets. The Seminary’s financial position remains strong due to the generosity of friends, alumni, churches, and other organizations. Our deep resources allow Austin Seminary to have an extraordinary impact on theological education.

Dear Generous Donors,

In the pages that follow, we celebrate the people, congregations, and organizations who generously support the mission of Austin Seminary through donations to the annual fund and endowment. As an endowment-dependent, annual fund-supported institution, present and past financial contributions enable Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary to educate and equip people for ordained Christian ministry and other forms of Christian service and leadership. Simply put, our enterprise of theological education would not be possible without these generous donors.

Much like the genealogies in the Christian scriptures, the Donor Honor Roll includes names with varying degrees of familiarity, but every name represents a story. Luke’s gospel includes the name Shealtiel. I am unaware of Shealtiel’s inclusion in many Christian education curricula published from the Protestant perspective—if you are, please send me examples—nevertheless, Shealtiel’s father, the king of Judah, was dethroned, deported, and died in Babylon, which made Shealtiel an exilarch, a king-in-exile. For unknown reasons, Shealtiel is equated with Ezra in the apocryphal text of 2 Esdras, which records a long, rich theological dialogue between the exilarch and the angel Uriel regarding questions of suffering and hope. Shealtiel may not often be referenced in sermons, but that name recalls a valuable history.

So too, the 2024 Annual Report includes a list of donors who contributed to the Seminary in the previous fiscal year. Each of these names recalls a story of Austin Seminary’s winsome and exemplary community. They are alumni and friends, church leaders, and faithful servants. They are people deeply inspired by the story of Jesus Christ and who value well-educated ordained and lay ministers who serve Christ’s church through times of suffering as well as hope. We give thanks for each name listed herein and for all the saints who have gone before, and we invite you to count yourselves among the supporters of Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary by donating this fiscal year.

With much gratitude,

Donate today!
