Stonewell. Made from little black jewels.
MARTINS7032_ACO
When we first started making wine at Peter Lehmann in 1980, we knew that the Shiraz that came from some vineyards was more intense, muscular and deeper in colour. We’d seen it in the vineyards. ‘Little black jewels’ we called them. From those special parcels of grapes we made a separate Shiraz. We called it Stonewell, Peter Lehmann Wines’ best wine of each vintage and one of the world’s great Shiraz.

General Manager’s Message •••
It would be hard to imagine modern civilization without the profound influence of Italy over the last 2,000 years. Music has been especially enriched by composers from Monteverdi to Morricone and one of the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s most enduring support programs was inspired by the example of history’s greatest art patrons – the Medicis. While the public perception of the ACO is focused on main-stage performances of thrilling music by our band of brilliant musicians, off-stage the ACO is an ever-growing force in music education. What started as a search for the most outstanding young musicians to be groomed in ACO2 has evolved into a wide-reaching education arm which touches the lives of young Australians from primary school children through to post-graduates. Tonight’s Gala Dinner puts these less visible aspects of the ACO’s life into the spotlight, showing you how our marvellous musicians open the ears of children right across the nation and give them experiences which would otherwise be out of their reach. Last year, the Sydney Gala raised sufficient funds for us to expand our education programs in 2011 and tonight, with your help, we will be able to dream of an even brighter future with our plan to launch an ACO Youth Orchestra, continue our Picton Strings Program, special performances for secondary school students and an expanded relationship with the Australian Children’s Music Foundation, to transform the lives of children from less privileged backgrounds. Viva la musica! Timothy Calnin General Manager Australian Chamber Orchestra

The Auction •••
Italians have always known what counts in life and having a good time and doing it with style always head the list. Some people say it started the moment Nero picked up his violin and started to play…. others say it began with Roman orgies, or Roman roads. After 2,000 years, the mosaics in those villas in Pompeii still look pretty stylish! The Medicis took extravagance to new heights. Right down to modern times, Fellini summed it up with La Dolce Vita. It’s not what you do, it’s the way you do it, and in Italy, this applies to everything, from eating, dressing, to booing a singer at the opera, to flirting, from tortellini to tyres,…this year’s list of prizes is suffused with the flavour and spirit of Italy and the creative excellence and ineffable flair of the Italians. When we think of Italy, we don’t think of revolving door governments or the latest scandal, we think of La Dolce Vita, the sweet life!

Item 3. Nora Wompi
Item 4. Qantas In-Flight Entertainment
Australian art at its best.
Qantas In-flight entertainment advertising for a month on Evening ON:Q.
With their thick, viscous skeins of impasto paint, the paintings of Nora Wompi seem to melt on to the eye. Layers of overlapping colours blur, making forms difficult to define; the desert landscape shimmers into being, like a mirage upon the horizon. In the past five years, the paintings of Nora Wompi have increased in both scale and confidence. Her development has not been a process of metamorphosis, so much as a form of artistic excavation, stripping away the crust to reveal the metaphysical essence of the landscape. Her latest works are less concerned with the visible features of the landscape than with its underlying spiritual meanings. They are paintings of experience, acutely aware of the truth of the matter, of what is permanent and what fades away. Nora Wompi was born in the Great Sandy Desert in a place called Libaru and she belongs to a generation of senior Indigenous people who grew up in the desert, learning the solemn codes of the nomadic lifestyle. Nora Wompi is a known and respected artist with Warlayirti Artists, in Balgo Western Australia, and is represented by Suzanne O’Connell Gallery Brisbane. Her works have been displayed in Europe, Asia and extensively throughout Australia at the National Museum of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria and others. Wompi will be exhibiting in Sydney at Dank St Gallery next month and you’re all invited to the opening on 19 November! Tonight, Wompi is offering an iconic and vibrant work – the perfect addition to your collection, or the perfect piece to jumpstart a collection of priceless Australian art. Medium: Size: 150x100cm Donated by The Suzanne O’Connell Gallery Brisbane in conjunction with Warlayirti Artists, Balgo

“Having the ACO come out to Picton to work with us has been a sensational experience and one we are very lucky to have.” “The ACO has inspired me and the others to strive for excellence.” In 2012, we will continue to work with those students, honing their skills as an ensemble and encouraging them through rehearsals, workshops and concerts. We hope to achieve the same success in Picton as in Parramatta, with the group forming their own independent youth orchestra at the end of the three year program. Item 5. Italian Outing
Item 6. John Baldessari
An authetic Italian dinner and the exclusive opportunity to come ‘behind the scenes’ at the ACO.
An edition artwork by one of the grand old men of contemporary art.
Enjoy the unique symbiosis between the musicians that makes the ACO one of the world’s most celebrated chamber ensembles, when you attend a rehearsal and discover the fascinating personal dynamics, creativity and sheer hard work which create a memorable performance. Be within a heartbeat of Richard Tognetti’s $10million Guarneri del Gesù violin and Australia’s only Stradivarius violin, with a chance to enjoy drinks with the musicians afterwards, in the ACO’s own Green Room. Then, discover what the Sydney Morning Herald described as a “happy symbiosis of food, wine and music” with dinner for four at Alfredo’s Authentic Italian Restaurant, situated just a short walk from the ACO rehearsal studio – a restaurant that has been delighting Sydneysiders for 24 years.
John Baldessari is one of the grand old men of contemporary art but this octogenarian polymath, whose creativity extends to sculpture, video and photography as well as painting, has been honoured with a Golden Lion at the 2009 Venice Biennale and major retrospectives at both new York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and London’s Tate Modern. He became well known in Sydney through his involvement in last year’s Your Name in Lights project. For Art & Australia’s Summer 2010 issue, he was given free rein to create the magazine’s cover, for which he created a photo montage of a human hand grasping a spider. Like so much of his output, it is both striking and subversively humorous. The prize is a framed version of a strictly numbered edition.
Following your taste of authentic Italian, cook up a storm at home with your very own copy of Guy Grossi’s My Italian Heart cookbook.

Item 11. Pen to paper
Item 12. In the moda
Limited edition Graf Von Faber-Castell Pen of the Year 2011.
Accessories from Coach.
Commemorating the 250th anniversary of Faber-Castell, this limited edition pen features eight segments of jade stone, symbolising the eight generations that have made their mark on the Faber-Castell family firm to date.
It started in a Manhattan loft in 1941 and now they’re seen on the Avenue Montaigne, on the Via Condotti, Madison Avenue and in Sloane Square….we’re talking about Coach, the brand that has redefined the concept of practical elegance in handbags and luggage. When you’re carrying a Coach bag, you’re well dressed.
Bringer of luck, symbol of power, elixir of immortality – jade has always been surrounded by a special aura. From the earliest times, advanced cultures created jade objects of fascinating variety. The great jewellers of the Art Deco period discovered jade for their luxurious creations. Before then, the Russian goldsmith Fabergé – famous for his opulent jewellery – had already created artistic desk utensils from jade. That unique symbolic and creative energy naturally predestined the green gemstone for a special role in celebrating Faber-Castell’s 250th anniversary.
This voucher for Coach merchandise is valid at any Coach store until 27 October 2012. Donated by Coach and True Alliance Value: $750 Starting bid: $300
In reference to the year when the company was founded, this exclusive edition is limited to 1761 pens. Donated by Graf Von Faber-Castell Value: $5,000 Starting bid: $1,700

Elwyn Lynn was one of the distinctive Australian artists in the second half of the twentieth century and combined abstract style with a unique insight, which helped to redefine Australian landscape painting. The full gilt decorated leather binding and endpaper drawing entitled Junee was created especially for this publication by Sidney Nolan in 1976. Book 3. 40 years: Australian Public Art Projects. John Kaldor has few peers as a collector, supporter and patron of Australian contemporary art since the late 1950s.
