MANAGING DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE It is wonderful to be in a room full of friends coming together to enjoy an evening of music with one of Australia’s most remarkable arts organisations. The ACO’s national and international performance reputation is much lauded in major music centres around the globe. The other critical part of our activity is the nurturing of an appreciation of music in young people, and the development of talent. This work happens within our fastgrowing education program in schools, regional centres and remote communities throughout the year, far from the public eye. Much of this expansion is in Victoria, led by ongoing programs by the Melbourne-based ACO Inspire Quartet at Worawa Aboriginal College in Healesville and The Royal Children’s Hospital, plus workshops for the Victorian Schools’ State Spectacular and now a new program at Dandenong South Primary School. From grass roots programs such as these, we aim to not only unlock a life-long appreciation of music for these young people, but also to foster extraordinary instrumentalists who will strive to participate in ACO Academy, our national music camp for talented secondary-school musicians, which returns to Melbourne

in 2018. After ACO Academy, the next level of excellence is to audition and be selected in our Emerging Artists’ Program, before one day walking on-stage shoulder-toshoulder with musicians of the ACO. Members of our Emerging Artists’ Program, together with members of the main ensemble, comprise our regional touring orchestra, ACO Collective. Ten years on and led by its own Artistic Director, Pekka Kuusisto, ACO Collective is a very fine orchestra in its own right, and has developed top young Australian string players while nurturing new audiences, delivering concerts and educational workshops throughout Australia. We are excited to introduce ACO Move in Melbourne this year, a program which enables young adults with disability to learn, practice and develop movement responses to live music. ACO Inspire, Academy, Collective and Move are all component parts of our larger national work in education. We hope that tonight will inspire you to support this critical investment in the future of music in our country, and we thank you in advance for helping us make these big dreams a reality. RICHARD EVANS MANAGING DIRECTOR

SUPPORT OUR VICTORIAN EDUCATION PROGRAM ACO Patrons love great music and share our vision for the future, playing a vital role in helping us to achieve our ambitions. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, our National Education Program continues to flourish, providing wonderful and enriching opportunities for students and music teachers in Victoria and across Australia. Here in Melbourne, the Program includes a wide range of activities which bring music to young people regardless of their background – from primary school children in significantly disadvantaged communities to talented young musicians at the post-tertiary level. Please make a contribution and help fund our Victorian Education Program, which in 2018 will include both ACO Move – our internationally acclaimed program for adolescents with disability, and ACO Academy – our week long immersion in orchestra life for talented students from around the country. The ACO Inspire Quartet, our Melbourne-based education quartet, will continue to deliver schools’ programs all around the country, with a particular focus on Victoria. 20

The Victorian Education Program includes: • Our program at The Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne, providing interactive concerts and ACO workshops for children staying in the hospital; • Workshops and interactive concerts at Worawa Aboriginal College in Healesville, for young women in years 7-10 who come from Indigenous communities in urban, regional and remote Australia; • ACO Music & Art classes for primary school children in Dandenong South; • ACO Move, offering music and movement classes for young adults with disability, which comes to Arts Centre Melbourne in 2018; and • The return of ACO Academy to Melbourne in 2018 – our flagship program for high school students, which culminates in a public performance at Melbourne Recital Centre. We hope you will help us continue our important work in music education by becoming a supporter of the Victorian Education Program.

Our auctioneer will call out the following funding levels, illustrated here with examples of how your donation can help:
