Cranlana, a brief History Sidney Myer bought the house now known as Cranlana in 1922. He combined the names of the house that he had lived in, Cranford, and the house that his wife, Dame Merlyn had lived in, Tillana. Previously the house was named Torrie by the then owner, Mrs H.J.D. Menzies. Cranlana has been extensively refurbished over the years with additions such as the ballroom wing built in 1922, where the cabinets, designed by Harold Desbrowe Annear, were built to house the Oriental Collection, which was acquired while the family was living in San Francisco in the late ‘20s. made in four months and in an article in the ‘Australian Home Beautiful’ at the time, were described as “the finest set of hand forged gates ever constructed in Victoria”. While remaining the home of the Myer family, Cranlana has been used extensively for community activities over the years. Countless fundraising functions were held there during the Second World War, as well as after the war. Cranlana was used as Admiral Nimitz’s Melbourne base before he moved further north after the Battle of the Coral Sea and for much of the balance of the war it was used as a rest and recreation centre for officers of the U.S. Army 4th General Hospital. Dame Merlyn Myer lived in the house until her death in 1982. Since then the house has continued to be used by all four of her children and an increasing number of grandchildren - as a focal point for family and community activities.
