Richard Tognetti is joined by virtuoso pianist Polina Leschenko for two intimate recital programs in Sydney and Canberra.
The meditative minimalism of Estonian composer Arvo Pärt’s Fratres is poignant and emotional, with the two haunting voices of violin and piano entwined. Beethoven’s ‘Spring’ Sonata evokes the capriciousness of springtime weather, shifting from lyrical sunshine to stormy intensity in the blink of an eye. ‘Irkanda’ is an Australian Indigenous word for a remote and lonely place, and it inspired a series of works by ACO’s great friend, the late Peter Sculthorpe, including this evocative piece for solo violin. Brahms’ third Sonata in D Minor features the overwhelmingly tender Adagio bringing this intimate program to a fitting finale.
