FROM THE CHAIRMAN
FROM THE MANAGING DIRECTOR The arts in Australia and the name of the Belgiorno-Nettis family are practically synonymous. At the heart of this extraordinary family dynasty is none other than the Chairman of the Board of the Australian Chamber Orchestra: Mr Guido Belgiorno-Nettis AM.
When I joined the Australian Chamber Orchestra as a Director 20 years ago, I had no idea where that journey would take me. In 1996, Richard Tognetti’s gift of creativity and performance excellence was already established. Since then, the Orchestra has attained a rare and unique status as the best music ensemble of its kind in the world. It has been a privilege to be part of this.
Watching Guido steer the ACO to its current position as “the finest string ensemble on the planet” will be remembered in history as a period characterised by exemplary and inspirational leadership. It is due, in no small part, to his tireless efforts that the ACO has become a globally recognised musical brand.
New areas of creative excitement are many, with one of the most significant being ACO Collective and its engagement with regional Australia and broader music education. Richard’s musical and film collaborations are also rightly celebrated, whether the crossover be with musician and composer Johnny Greenwood, Sydney Dance Company guru Rafael Bonachela, our national philosopher and cartoonist Michael Leunig, or international jet-setter Barry Humphries, to mention a few. It’s hard to keep up with them! So, what more can there be, you may ask? In my observation, Richard’s creativity has not reached its peak - there is still much to do that will dazzle more audiences.
When Guido began his tenure as Chairman, the ACO premises was a cramped studio in Kings Cross. Guido worked with a youthful Richard Tognetti to realise his dream of a purpose-built home for the core group of ten violins, three violas, three cellos, and one double bass. This dream quickly became a reality, and the ACO Studio was established at its current location in Circular Quay. The Orchestra is now entering the next exciting phase of its development, and with that the need for a larger home - one with more space, more amenity for our musicians and collaborators to prepare and experiment within, and importantly a place where our audiences, students and our immediate family and you, our extended family, can share in both our preparation and presentation.
The relocation of the Orchestra to the Walsh Bay Arts Precinct at Pier 2/3 will help take us to a new level of collaborative creativity and opportunity, and provide a sense of belonging. This will be the Company’s single most important initiative since the appointment of Richard as Artistic Director 25 years ago.
So, Guido has once again risen to this challenge. He has lobbied hard to secure our next home at Pier 2/3 in the newly minted Walsh Bay Arts Precinct. The ambition of building a home for the ACO couldn’t be undertaken without the solid foundations, practices and culture which have been imbued under Guido’s leadership.
I feel a strong bond to the ACO’s part in this Arts Precinct project. My family company Transfield was responsible for the redevelopment of the larger Walsh Bay Precinct, including the resolution to designate that Pier 2/3 be returned to Arts use only. Even though the project is approved, the day the ACO moves in will fulfil a dream I conceived in 1988 with a submission presented to the equivalent of Arts NSW.
As we rapidly move towards 2019 and our next big move to Walsh Bay and all that means for our audiences, staff and musicians, we pause to acknowledge the enormous contribution which continues to be made by Guido to the life force of your Australian Chamber Orchestra. Tonight we thank you Guido for your 20 years of inspired, and inspiring leadership.
I hope you will join me in supporting this important initiative.
Richard Evans

MONEY GOES
Funds raised from tonight’s event will support the ACO’s National Education Program, which costs approximately $2.7 million to run each year. Government funding makes up just 14% of the ACOs’ annual income. Therefore, we rely on the support of our generous donors and partners to enable our programs to continue. Tonight we would love to raise $500,000 to support our National Education Program. Here are just a few of the education programs which your generous support tonight will help fund:
PENRITH STRINGS Providing secondary school students in Western Sydney with unique opportunities to play alongside ACO musicians learning what it is like to play in a professional orchestra and offering life changing access for Australia’s promising young musicians.
“Loved it! Listening to them play is aweinspiring and so getting to play with them was just the GREATEST HONOUR.”
MUSIC AND ART Teaching children to express their ideas and reactions to music through visual art - delivered by video conferencing into primary schools around Australia.
“You taught me about the artwork, tempo, emotions, instruments, vibrations, dynamics, compositions and composers like Beethoven and the person that did the seasons, Vivaldi.”

PRIMARY SCHOOL PROGRAMS
“Our favourite part of ‘The Four Seasons’ was the music painting the picture of the hunt. You told us that we could scream when the prey was captured. We loved that!”
Bringing music into the lives of disadvantaged primary school children in Sydney and Melbourne with the Australian Children’s Music Foundation, through engaging, interactive workshops and concerts.
ACO MOVE Providing creative and inclusive music and movement workshops for young adults with disability who experience teamwork, increased self-esteem and the sheer joy of music.
