Illuminated

Welcome

It is surprisingly rare for two major Australian performing arts companies to join forces to create a new work, even though the nexus between music and dance is so natural and organic. The essential element is a shared vision by both Artistic Directors and it has been a particular joy to see Rafael and Richard challenge, inspire and spark off each other as the elements of Illuminated have come together. The collaboration began with a common fascination with the music of Jean-Philippe Rameau and has broadened to the music of Benjamin Britten – two contrasting musical voices which have inspired Rafael to create dance works of rich and immense variety. Following this gala performance in Melbourne’s State Theatre, Sydney Dance Company and the Australian Chamber Orchestra will take Illuminated to Hong Kong to showcase this remarkable crossfertilisation of talent and creativity to an international audience. We are both very grateful to the Australia Council for providing the seed funding which brought us together in the first place for Project Rameau, and for supporting Illuminated’s first international appearances in Hong Kong next month. We hope you enjoy our pas de deux together as much as we have enjoyed every moment of this creative collaboration.

Rafael Bonachela Choreographer

Note

Les Illuminations, contrary to its name, a dark opus, is a song cycle written in 1939 based on verse and poems by Arthur Rimbaud. My choreography, a series of duets, was inspired by the world of Rimbaud’s poetry and imagery: the chaos of big cities, the theatricality of life, the tragic and painful aspects of beauty, the underworld and the savage parade of life. This world is dreamy, meditative and nostalgic with emotional intensity and erotic visions. Variation 10, based on Britten’s Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge, allows an expansion from duets to the ensemble, the use of the full company in parts and variations of ten, and provides a continued opportunity to celebrate Britten’s legacy. For Variation 10, my inspiration comes directly from the music, a remarkable work. Listening to it, it is impossible not to feel the changing colours in tonality, the changing worlds, and the changing pace and feeling. What I love: this is a work of contrasts, of dark and light, of sadness and happiness. It is ghostly, forceful, delicate, passionate, fun, intelligent and playful. It has it all.

To find a piece of music that allows me to shift from intensity and passion to something delicate and playful, all that is present in the music: it is a joy, and so easy to work with. It’s almost as if it were made to be danced. Sydney Dance Company first collaborated with the supremely talented musicians of the Australian Chamber Orchestra back in 2012 for Project Rameau, an exploration of the music of Baroque composer Jean Phillipe Rameau. We thought it was only fitting that we relive excerpts from this work alongside the pieces from Britten as we join forces again for this special onenight only occasion.

The seed of Les Illuminations originally came from singer Katie Noonan, who approached me with a vision of setting Benjamin Britten’s music to dance. We brought her imagining to life in 2013 at Sydney Opera House in the centenary of Britten’s birth. Now, Variation 10 joins this program to celebrate the beauty and depth of this superb composer.

Biography #SDCIlluminated

Rafael Bonachela has been the Artistic Director for Sydney Dance Company since 2009. He has created several pieces for Sydney Dance Company including 360° (2008), we unfold (2009), 6 Breaths (2010), LANDforms (2011), 2 One Another (2012), Project Rameau (2012), Les Illuminations (2013), Emergence (2013), 2 in D Minor (2014), Scattered Rhymes (2014) and Frame of Mind (2015). In addition, he has remounted outstanding repertoire from Bonachela Dance Company such as Soledad and Irony of Fate (2010) and The Land of Yes & The Land of No (2011). Rafael’s Frame of Mind won the 2015 Helpmann Awards for ‘Best Choreography’ and ‘Best Dance Work’. 2 One Another won the ‘Best Ensemble’ Award in the 2012 Green Room Awards and the 2013 Australian Dance Award for ‘Outstanding Achievement in Choreography’ and ‘Outstanding Performance by a Company’.

His internationally recognised talent has seen him work not only with contemporary dance at the highest level but also with artists from popular culture, such as

In February 2013, Rafael was honoured with an Officer’s Cross of the Order of Civil Merit by His Majesty the King of Spain. Rafael began his early dance training in Barcelona and was a member of the legendary Rambert Dance Company, both as a dancer and Associate Choreographer. He established the Bonachela Dance Company (BDC) in 2006. As a choreographer, he has been commissioned to make works for Candoco, George Piper Dances, ITDANSA, Danza Contemporanea de Cuba, Transitions Dance Company and Dance Works Rotterdam amongst others. In 2013, Kaldor Public Art Projects brought Rafael on board to develop the choreography for artists Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla’s work Revolving Door, which was part of the acclaimed live performance art exhibition 13 Rooms. For Sydney Festival 2015, Rafael collaborated with artist Mira Calix to choreograph for the Inside There Falls installation at Carriageworks.

Kylie Minogue, Tina Turner, Sarah Blasko and Katie Noonan as well as leading fashion designers Dion Lee and Toni Maticevski. Such collaborative efforts reflect the inspiration he finds and utilises from culture today.

Note Peter Il’yich Tchaikovsky and Marius Petipa. Igor Stravinsky and Vaclav Nijinsky. Igor Stravinsky and George Balanchine. Aaron Copland and Martha Graham. Leonard Bernstein and Jerome Robbins. John Cage and Merce Cunningham. These are just a few of the great composer and choreographer combinations, without whom we would not have some of the greatest music and dance the world has ever seen.

Britten’s Frank Bridge Variations may be the principal reason people know of composer Bridge. But for Britten, he was an outstanding teacher who instilled in him excellent technique and discipline, including two cardinal rules: ‘One was that you should find yourself and be true to what you found. The other – obviously connected with the first – was his scrupulous attention to good technique, the business of saying clearly what was in one’s mind.’

Rafael and my collaboration is a homage to this kind of creative partnership. And to our duo, we add the ethereal and unique Katie Noonan who initially saw the potential of Britten’s Les Illuminations and Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge as dance music.

Each of the 11 Variations represents something about his esteemed teacher: himself; his depth; his energy; his charm; his humour; his tradition; his enthusiasm; his vitality, his sympathy; his reverence; and his skill and dedication.

We three discussed what could be and how it could be. And so here we are. Illuminated is very different from our first collaboration, Project Rameau, back in 2012. To begin with, it is three discrete ballets – Les Illuminations, Variation 10 and Project Rameau, a reworking of the full-length ballet we did three years ago.

The ‘new’ version of Project Rameau retains the original spectacle of entertainment, which is absolutely apropos, as much of his music was meant for the theatre. Rameau’s music can, and more often than not, is heard without dancers. However, with Rafael’s choreography, Rameau’s music is immediately transformed – melodic lines, rhythmic patterns, harmonic progressions are immediately clear. They are illuminated!

Les Illuminations is a work of genius by Britten. Leonard Bernstein summed up Britten’s compositional complexity: ‘‘on the surface Britten’s music would seem to be decorative, positive, charming, but it’s so much more than that. When you hear Britten’s music, if you really hear it, not just listen to it superficially, you become aware of something very dark. There are gears that are grinding and not quite meshing, and they make a great pain.’

Dr Rachel Duerden, a British dance scholar, wrote a title for a paper that perfectly describes this collaboration. While some of this music was not written with the intention of it being dance music, it all sounds and looks as though it were meant to be. So we hope you enjoy our “dancing in the imagined space of music”.

Later that year he led several performances of the Australian Chamber Orchestra, and that November was appointed as the Orchestra’s lead violin and, subsequently, Artistic Director. He is also Artistic Director of the Festival Maribor in Slovenia.

Richard was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2010. He holds honorary doctorates from three Australian universities and was made a National Living Treasure in 1999. He performs on a 1743 Guarneri del Gesù violin, lent to him by an anonymous Australian private benefactor. He has given more than 2500 performances with the Australian Chamber Orchestra.
