Stradbroke Island June and I have been friends since our first day of primary school in 1955 and we grew up together in Moe, Victoria. I love these works and have a strong emotional response to them. There is a depth of feeling which shines out for me. I can see June’s fierce determination to conquer a form. I respect her honest and intellectually pure approach to making an image. I have always enjoyed the amount of wrangling involved before a fresh clear work emerges. There is no pandering to fashion or a market, there is simply an intensity, which I find very moving. Landscapes which give the sense of being unchanged, of connecting us to what is real, can be wonderful to experience and these works represent that for me. June’s work has a tenderness which is immediately appealing and an introspection which has resulted in a lyrical response to a beautiful and uniquely Australian landscape. These works have a sense of stretching back into the past, and express the beauty and fragile nature of the island. Joy Ellis 2019
