Welcome In 2017, we celebrate our fifth subscription season with an exploration of vibrant early classical music from Madrid, Paris, Salzburg, Vienna, Prague and Berlin featuring their beloved composers Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, C.P.E. Bach and Boccherini. We also present some interesting lesser-known composers such as Cambini, Janitsch and Chevalier de Saint-Georges. As always, we aim to present music that both inspires us and engages our audiences, whether it be well-loved favourites heard in a new way, or unearthed treasures by composers we can’t wait for you to discover! This year we have a host of programs that follow this philosophy and we are thrilled to present them to you. We are especially delighted that we will return to City Recital Hall for two programs and also feature international fortepianist Melvyn Tan, along with some of our fabulous regular collaborators. I hope you will join us and we look forward to seeing you at the concerts!

The Ensemble The Australian Haydn Ensemble (AHE) was formed in late 2011 and launched its first subscription season in 2012. AHE has rapidly claimed a place among Australia’s finest orchestras and chamber music groups. The ensemble specialises in the music of the classical era, performing on historical instruments under the leadership of Artistic Director, Skye McIntosh. Formed from a group of dedicated musicians with national and international experience, AHE has built a reputation for its vivacious
performances, which are faithful to the soundworlds that would have been familiar to Haydn and his contemporaries. AHE have recently released their chart topping debut ABC Classics album, performed at the Melbourne festival, throughout Australia and toured to America. They present five tours annually and include regional performances and education projects at the core of their activities.

2017 Season A musician cannot move others unless he too is moved. He must of necessity feel all of the affects that he hopes to arouse in his audience, for the revealing of his own humour will stimulate a like humour in the listener. - C.P.E. Bach
In our fifth year, AHE evokes C.P.E. Bach’s ideal musical experience - one in which both audience and performers are moved alike.
Quartets nicknamed after this theme will be presented along with Mozart’s virtuosic Oboe Quartet.
We launch with a fantastic string quintet program featuring Boccherini’s Night Music of the Streets of Madrid, his Op. 25 No. 6 Quintet, and a wonderful but rarely heard quintet by the Italian composer, Cambini.
Beethoven’s 5th Piano Concerto, ‘The Emperor’ will complete our Beethoven cycle with Dr Neal Peres Da Costa, along with an Australian premiere of Cimador’s chamber version of Mozart’s ‘Prague’ Symphony.
Mid-year, we feature international star Melvyn Tan as fortepiano soloist in Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 18, as well as Haydn’s gorgeous and dramatic Paris Symphony ‘La Reine’.
To finish the year we are joined by our dear friend and colleague Dr Erin Helyard who returns to perform C.P.E. Bach’s B Minor Harpsichord Concerto and direct Haydn’s dramatic Sturm und Drang Symphony No. 52, as well as Mozart’s radiant Symphony No. 29.
We present a string quartet and oboe program exploring the 18th century theme of ‘the hunt’. Mozart and Haydn’s wonderful String

Boccherini Night Streets AHE launches their year with a vibrant program of hot-blooded Spanish-influenced string quintets for two violins, viola and two cellos. Boccherini’s Night Music of the Streets of Madrid, is his charismatic reflection on the vibrant city. Church bells, the soldier’s drum, popular street dances and the curfew call from the night watch, are all vividly depicted in this stunning work. Exceptionally prolific in his output for this quintet combination - we also perform his virtuosic, tenderly languishing Op. 25 No. 6 in A minor.
A mysterious musical figure of the 18th and early 19th centuries, of whom little is known. We perform his brilliant but rarely heard quintet No. 23 in G major.
MOZART
The program also features a dark and beautiful arrangement for string quintet of Mozart’s Adagio and Allegro K. 594, originally written for mechanical clockwork organ.

THE GUARDIAN
Melvyn Tan & Haydn’s Paris AHE are incredibly excited to present international pianist, Melvyn Tan in a program inspired by the beauty and romance of classical Paris. Melvyn Tan, a pioneer of performance on historical instruments and renowned for his ‘delicacy and peerless, silvery virtuosity’, performs the concerto Mozart wrote for the Parisian pianist, Maria Theresa von Paradis, No. 18 in B flat major. Exploration, insight and imagination are vital ingredients in Melvyn Tan’s blend of artistic attributes. The Ensemble will also present the Australian premiere of a symphony by the legendary African Parisian violinist, director, swordsman, soldier
and composer Chevalier de Saint-Georges - known as ‘The Black Mozart’. Director of the Paris Opera, he was also responsible for the commission of Haydn’s highly acclaimed Paris Symphonies. AHE will perform in its full orchestral configuration, presenting one of these great symphonies - No. 85 ‘The Queen’ dedicated to Marie Antoinette.

HUNTING SONG BY SIR WALTER SCOTT (1771 - 1832)
Mozart’s Oboe & The Hunt ‘La Chasse’ or ‘The Hunt’ was a popular theme of the 18th century. This intimate chamber music program intertwines quartets based on this fascination with music for the oboe - an instrument then often associated with hunt. Haydn’s string quartet ‘La Chasse’ Op. 1 No. 1 was written as early as 1751. Its stunning adagio is a vision of where Haydn would go with this genre.

SYDNEY MORNING HERALD
C.P.E. Bach, Mozart & Haydn Over the past five years, AHE have formed a wonderful collaborative relationship with regular guest Dr Erin Helyard. For our finale in 2017, Helyard returns to direct a dazzling symphonic program and perform as soloist in C.P.E. Bach’s Keyboard Concerto in B minor. Described by Mozart as ‘the father of us all’, C.P.E. Bach was one of the greatest innovators of the 18th century. This program features a good dose of dramatic Sturm und Drang, with Haydn’s Symphony No. 52 in C minor - written whilst Haydn was at the Esterházy Palace in 1771. This underestimated Symphony was described by the famous American musicologist and Haydn specialist Robbins Landon, as “the grandfather of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony.”
The program will also uplift audiences with Mozart’s Symphony No. 29, a work full of life and humour - written when he was only 18 years old, but not to be underestimated in its importance. It is one of his finest symphonies and displays vital development in his maturing symphonic style.
