Welcome In 2018, the Australian Haydn Ensemble unearths exciting interpretations of treasured works and explores lesser-known composers of the early classical period. Our artists, playing on period instruments, look forward to sharing these with you. We start the year with a Haydn feast featuring his string quartet The Rider and Johann Salomon’s chamber version of the famous London Symphony. Following this, we perform an impassioned program of Spanish classical guitar music, including the flamboyant Fandango Quintet by one of our favourite composers, Luigi Boccherini. Renowned Australian baritone David Greco joins us later in the year for an intimate Schubert experience, showcasing new arrangements of his most loved lieder accompanied by string quintet. Beethoven’s first symphony in an historical chamber version follows along with Haydn’s dramatic Trauer Symphony, a virtuosic flute quartet
by his adoring student Ferdinand Ries and a string sextet by Beethoven’s teacher Albrechtsberger. Leading early music specialist Erin Helyard joins us to finish the year with a powerful orchestral program that celebrates the Enlightenment through Haydn’s Farewell Symphony. We hope you’ll enjoy our selection of rare and remarkable works in 2018.

The Ensemble welcomes classical period guitarist Simon Martyn-Ellis as our special guest featuring in Boccherini’s Fandango Quintet. Although Italian, Boccherini’s years living in Spain inspired this fiery and exciting chamber work. This program also includes Mozart’s famous Violin Sonata K. 304 in a rarely performed arrangement for violin, guitar and cello by the French guitarist Pierre Jean Porro, well-known in his day but now largely forgotten. The String Quartet No. 3 in C minor by Manuel Canales, composer to
the Spanish King, is a brilliant but little-known gem of the string quartet oeúvre that transports the listener to Spain. Haydn’s String Quartet Op. 51 The Seven Last Words of Christ our Saviour on the Cross, commissioned in 1785 for the underground Cadiz cathedral, represents Haydn’s only connection to Spain. This powerful work was originally scored for full orchestra, and later arranged by him for string quartet.

Symphony No. 1 in C major arr. Masi (1800)
The Ensemble loves to unearth forgotten composers and rediscover unknown historical chamber versions of the classics. In this Beethoven and Haydn program, we present two rare chamber versions: Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 and Haydn’s Symphony No. 44 The Trauer (Mourning). The 18th century arrangement of Beethoven’s masterwork, penned by Masi and featuring string quintet, flute and double bass, was discovered by Ensemble members in the British Library’s rare music collection.
Haydn’s well-known Trauer Symphony was arranged for chamber ensemble by Dr. Hague of Cambridge in the early 19th century. The symphony was so named because Haydn requested that the slow movement be played at his own funeral. The program also includes a string sextet by Albrechtsberger and a virtuosic flute quartet by Ries, the lesser known contemporaries of Haydn and Beethoven. Albrechtsberger was an early teacher of Beethoven, who introduced him to his student, colleague, and copyist Ferdinand Ries.

Haydn, Mozart and J.C. Bach.
We conclude the year with our dear friend and regular collaborator Dr Erin Helyard, director of Pinchgut Opera, performing a wonderful orchestral program inspired by the Enlightenment. J.C. Bach was an important influence on the young Mozart. His Symphony in G minor Op. 6 No. 6 is a signature work of the 18th century. Perhaps his darkest piece, it bursts with the essence of Sturm and Drang. The program features Helyard as soloist in Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 12 in A major, an early work
that pays homage to his influence by quoting J.C. Bach’s overture to La Calamita de Cuori and also his Rondo for piano and orchestra K. 386, written around the same time. Our program closes with Haydn’s dramatic Farewell Symphony, a work in which Haydn displays his classic ability to marry great humour with great beauty, perhaps rather fittingly, getting his point across to Prince Esterhazy that it was time to go home for the holidays!

A Message from our Chairman Marco Belgiorno-Zegna AM
2018 represents the sixth concert season for the Australian Haydn Ensemble. In this short period it has become an important addition to our classical music firmament, demonstrating a special skill at programming beautiful music around the time of Joseph Haydn. Excellent reviews have followed AHE wherever they have performed. I am greatly indebted to the AHE Board that generously provides a significant portion of support each year as well as our many wonderful and loyal donors. However, much more is needed in addition to this and ticket sales if the AHE is to continue to grow.
From Our Patron, Professor the Honorable Dame Marie Bashir AD CVO
“To be Patron of The Australian Haydn Ensemble is truly an overwhelming honour, given the gratitude I have felt towards the multifaceted and great contribution of Joseph Haydn to music and as a continuing source of inspiration.
I hope that you will join us in supporting the AHE to achieve its goal of bring this beautiful music to a wider audience.
Marco Belgiorno-Zegna AM 25

Enlighten their Futures AHE EDUCATION PROGRAM The Australian Haydn Ensemble is passionately committed to education. In 2018 we will present a range of string and orchestral workshops catering to younger primary age school students right through to tertiary level and adult students. The program reaches out to students in metropolitan and regional areas and provides them with a unique musical experience connected to 18th century music and philosophies. Students have the chance to work alongside AHE musicians and try out period bows and wind instruments, while discovering aspects of historical classical style and ensemble techniques.
