Rousseau: Essay on the Origin of Languages (1781)
The Australian Haydn Ensemble launches its 2019 season with a magical melodic exploration of the connection between nature and the music of Haydn. The program includes Australian premieres of string quartet versions of excerpts from his stunning oratorios The Creation and The Seasons, as well as his Sunrise string quartet. Following this, the Ensemble performs an intriguing program of French classical chamber music, including works by Devienne, Rameau, Jadin, Haydn and Mozart. The Ensemble continues its exploration of Beethoven’s symphonic music in chamber format with a rare chamber version of his fourth symphony. This is coupled with Mozart’s delightful String Quintet in G minor and Boccherini’s virtuosic Flute Sextet. Renowned Canadian soprano Stefanie True joins the Ensemble later in the year for a program inspired by Italian drama. She will perform Handel’s cantata Il delirio amoroso and Haydn’s powerful Arianna a Naxos.
The program also features Avison’s melodious Concerto Grosso in D minor Op. 3 after Domenico Scarlatti, and Haydn’s Symphony No. 73 (La Chasse) in a rare eighteenth century chamber version. Bavarian-Japanese violin virtuoso Midori Seiler, joins the Ensemble as guest director and soloist to finish the year with an explosive program of Mozart and Haydn in her Australian debut. Midori's extensive career as concert soloist, recording artist and concert-master has seen her perform with many of the world's leading period groups. These include Akademie fur Alter Musik Berlin, Concerto Köln and Anima Eterna. We are excited to welcome her to Australia to perform.

Haydn’s Nature
AHE opens its 2019 season with a string quartet program that celebrates Haydn’s love of the natural world. In our first program, Artistic Director and violinist Skye McIntosh and the AHE quartet explore the relationship between Haydn and nature. Two of Haydn’s beloved string quartets, Sunrise and The Lark bookend the program. In The Lark, Haydn masterfully weaves the birdsong-like melodies of the first violins that fly above the other instruments. The work finishes with a fiendishly difficult moto perpetuo. At the heart of the program are selections from two of Haydn’s famous oratorios, The Seasons and The Creation.
The Ensemble presents movements from both in historical string quartet arrangements. One of Haydn’s indisputable works of genius, the String Quartet Op. 76 No. 4 (Sunrise) closes the program. Although it was not nicknamed by Haydn himself, the opening bars of the quartet clearly evoke the image of daybreak.

French Twist
Experience the essence of eighteenth century France in this chamber music program of Devienne, Rameau, Jadin, Mozart and Haydn. Mozart’s Flute Quartet in A major opens this French feast of chamber music. Although not written in France, the last movement of this charismatic work contains a French style Rondo highlighting Mozart’s comical reputation with the tempo indication “not too fast, then not too slow. So-so, with great elegance and expression.” Lesser-known French composer Hyacinthe Jadin dedicated his first set of three string quartets to Haydn. The Ensemble presents his beautiful String Quartet Op. 3 No. 1. Haydn’s influence is apparent in this delightful and playful work. Following this, the Devienne
Flute Quartet Op. 16 No. 3 darkens the tone with its brooding opening movement in B minor.
Program
The turbulent mood continues with Haydn’s Symphony No. 87 in a string quartet arrangement believed to have been penned by Haydn himself. The symphony was part of his commission in the 1780s for the Parisian-based group Concerts de la Loge Olympique.
String Quartet in C major Op. 3 No. 1
The program closes with a fittingly French work, Rameau’s Cinquième Concert from Pièces de Clavecin en Concerts, paying homage to earlier composers Forqueray and Marais.

Beethoven Four
The Ensemble performs a rare chamber version of Beethoven's Symphony No. 4, along with a virtuosic flute sextet by Boccherini and Mozart’s much-loved String Quintet in G minor. It has been suggested that Mozart may have written his string quintets K.515 and K.516 to impress King Friedrich Wilhelm II of Prussia and to surpass the quintets written by Boccherini. If true, it had no effect on either the King nor Boccherini, but it did lead to the creation of some of his most wonderful chamber music. Boccherini’s divertimento Sextet for Flute and Strings contains all the drama and textures we have come to love and expect from his music with its Spanish and Italian inspiration. Mozart’s String Quintet in G minor, described as one of the greatest pieces
of chamber music ever written, will not disappoint with its achingly beautiful opening.
Program
The Ensemble continues its performance of previously unknown historical chamber versions of Beethoven’s symphonies with an Australian premiere of his Symphony No. 4 arranged by Watts for Flute and String Sextet. Music historian Robert Greenburg said of this work “If any of Beethoven's contemporaries had written this symphony, it would be considered that composer's masterwork, and that composer would be remembered forever for this.”.

Delirious Love
Canadian soprano Stefanie True performs dramatic Italian cantatas by Handel and Haydn. Artists Skye McIntosh – Director The Australian Haydn Ensemble Stefanie True – Soprano Soloist Award-winning Handel specialist Stefanie True, equally at ease on both opera and concert stages, dazzles audiences with her clear and stunning voice. Some of her recent engagements include Poppea in Handel’s Agrippina at The Grange Opera, solo roles at the Internationale Händel-Festspiele Göttingen, and the title role in Handel’s Theodora with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Avison’s Concerto Grosso No. 3 in D minor paves the way for the dramatic cantatas that follow. Handel’s cantata Il delirio amoroso (The Delirium of Love) is a spectacular work telling of the tragic and
unrequited love of Chloris for Thyrsis. Haydn’s equally moving cantata, Arianna a Naxos, reveals his mastery of writing for the human voice in a work that alternates between hope and profound despair. Haydn’s Symphony No. 73, placed between these works, shines in a rare chamber version by Salomon. It is the second gem from a rarely performed eighteenth century set brought to light by AHE.

The daring and virtuosic BavarianJapanese violinist, Midori Seiler makes her Australian debut leading a program of Mozart and Haydn.
Artists Midori Seiler – Guest Director & Violin Soloist The Australian Haydn Ensemble Midori Seiler is equally comfortable playing baroque violin concerti with orchestras such as the Budapest Festival Orchestra or Tafelmusik, Toronto, as she is performing classical or romantic violin concerti with orchestras such as Anima Eterna, Concerto Köln or Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin. Long term concertmaster of both, Seiler makes her Australian debut with the AHE as guest director and soloist in this dazzling season finale of Mozart and Haydn symphonies and concerti.
Symphony No. 33. This is followed by his brilliant but lesser-known Violin Concerto No. 2 in D major showcasing Midori’s outstanding virtuosity and her poise in the beautiful slow movement. In the second half of the program, Haydn’s Symphony No. 80 in D minor provides elements of Sturm and Drang. His virtuosic spirit shines through as we finish the year performing his Violin Concerto in C major.
The program opens with Mozart’s bright and joyous "A violinist with an urge for freedom ... Midori Seiler has risen to be the most versatile and prominent violinist of the baroque scene ... " Fono Forum

BECOME A SUPPORTER Individual donations are vital to the life of AHE. As a growing ensemble, we rely heavily on your support during this period of our development as we strive to educate and inform audiences, students and young musicians in historically informed performance. Your support will make an incredible difference, making it possible for our ensemble to continue to grow.
MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD The Australian Haydn Ensemble is entering its seventh subscription season with impressive credentials and an excellent list of reviews from the music critics. As an examples "They balance a conviction to trust the genius of the composer’s intent with a sense of spontaneity and personal engagement as performers." In addition, the AHE is beginning to build up a small number of superb recordings. Regrettably, today's general cultural climate does not enable organisations such as ours to survive without community support. I urge you to both subscribe and provide whatever support possible to permit these superb musicians to continue to present works of art that represent an important aspect of our Western traditions.
