On this note, we are delighted to return to you in 2021 presenting a new blended season of live and digital performances, exploring music of the late baroque and classical era on period instruments, performed by Australia's leading historically informed artists. AHE's Live Series includes four of our signature programs with concerts in Sydney, Canberra, the Southern Highlands and Berry, as well as individual performances throughout regional NSW. We are also pleased to partner with Melbourne Digital Concert Hall to livestream our concerts throughout the year. We are proud to introduce our first ever Digital Concert Series, accessible via our new membership program, AHE Digital Pass. After a year of such uncertainty, we are excited to return to you in March with live performances in Sydney, Canberra, the Southern Highlands, Berry and Newcastle. Our opening program for 2021, Prussian Quartets, features three beautiful string quartets written for the Prussian King – Friedrich Wilhelm II by Haydn, Mozart and Pleyel. Following this we present Beethoven’s Pastoral, a program featuring one of Beethoven’s most loved works in a stunning c. 1810 chamber version by Watts.
Our third program, partdrama, part-music, is a very special collaboration with Australian icon, John Bell - Haydn & Bell: A Life in Letters. Inspired by the fictional letters of ‘Stendhal’ about the life of Haydn, AHE presents a new adaptation for the stage. The year finishes with an orchestral program with our wonderful regular collaborator, Erin Helyard, entitled Mozart’s Prague. The program brings together works from late in Mozart’s life including the composer’s stunning piano concerto, No. 21 , the Elvira Madigan.

DO People often ask us if we only play the music of Haydn. The answer to that question is no! The Ensemble takes its name from Joseph Haydn who was a central figure in the 18th century and in the development of the classical style.
YOU Virtually every composer of the time had a personal connection to Haydn or was greatly influenced by him. Artistic Director Skye McIntosh builds AHE’s programs around the world of Haydn - with works that are inspired by his friendships, experiences and musical influence.
JUST The scope of AHE’s repertoire extends back into the baroque and forward into the early 19th century to include other composers such as C.P.E. Bach, Boccherini, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert, as well as a raft of other lesserknown composers who were connected to one another through the genius of Haydn.
PLAY AHE performs this repertoire on historical instruments. All our musicians play on baroque and classical instruments strung with gut strings. They also use baroque and classical bows, as well as baroque wind instruments, harpsichords and fortepianos rather than their modern-day descendants.

In 2021 the Australian Haydn Ensemble (AHE) enters its ninth year as a leading Australian period instrument group of excellence, performing on period instruments at the highest standard. Under the leadership of Artistic Director, Skye McIntosh, nationally and internationally lauded musicians bring historically inspired performance to life. AHE has garnered a reputation for imaginative programming and vibrant performances, as well as its enlightening education programs, engaging audiences everywhere. This world-class ensemble tours regularly throughout metropolitan and regional NSW, and presents its highly successful subscription series in Sydney, Canberra and regional centres. In 2021 the Ensemble will present four subscription series as well as other special performances.

PRUSSIAN QUARTETS HAYDN, MOZART AND PLEYEL
THE AUSTRALIAN HAYDN ENSEMBLE PRESENTS THREE IMPRESSIVE STRING QUARTETS RECALLING MUSICAL DEDICATIONS TO THE PRUSSIAN KING FRIEDRICH WILHELM II. In the late 1700s, Berlin was the vibrant seat of a kingdom that stretched from the Baltic states, Silesia and up to modern Denmark, and boasted a lively salon culture. These salon gatherings encouraged intelligent conversation, the exchange of ideas, and most importantly, the chance to perform ‘new’ music. The reign of King Friedrich Wilhelm II was relatively brief and his greatest claim to fame today is the building of the Brandenburg Gate. But as a patron of the arts, many notable chamber works were penned for him, including all three quartets featured in this program. The dedication to King Friederich is said to have come about after Haydn received a letter from him praising Haydn for the Paris symphonies. The letter enclosed a gift of a golden ring. To honour this, Haydn dedicated the Op. 50 quartets to him. ARTISTS // Australian Haydn Ensemble Quartet
Mozart’s set of three Prussian quartets, with their prominent cello solos, were almost certainly written to please the amateur cellist King. The third quartet in F major was one of the last quartets he composed, and it displays many of the composer’s trademark qualities - uneven phrases, sudden tempo changes, ingenious rhythms and novel harmonic shifts. The ending is a poetic stroke of mastery in itself, with the music lifting and dissolving into the ether. Pleyel, a student of Haydn (of whom Haydn was quite proud), also dedicated twelve quartets to the King. Of these, the AHE Quartet presents Quartet No. 9 in G minor.

A DAZZLING LATE ITALIAN BAROQUE PROGRAM OF SACRED MOTETS, ARIAS AND CONCERTOS FOR SOPRANO , FLUTE AND STRINGS BY HASSE AND VIVALDI. Australian Soprano Celeste Lazarenko and flautist Melissa Farrow both feature as soloists in the first of our Digital Concert Series. The program weaves together a stunning selection of late baroque works for soprano, flute and strings by Hasse and Vivaldi. Hasse’s beautiful motet Alte Nubes Illustrata will be interwoven with movements from his B minor flute concerto and contrasted with Vivaldi’s virtuosic Sum in medio tempestatum and his La Notte concerto for flute. Sum in medio tempestatum is a virtuosic work for soprano complimented by dramatic writing for strings and continuo. The Hasse Motet Alte Nubes Illustrata provides a beautiful contrast with this - although equally virtuosic, it captures a stunning lightness and beauty of the voice and silvery tone of the flute. performed with the English National Opera, Opera North, English Touring Opera and East Sussex Opera before relocating back to Sydney. Since her return, her solo roles have included The Cunning Little Vixen for Victorian Opera, Castor et Pollux, Giasone, and L’amant jaloux for Pinchgut Opera; Don Giovanni, The Magic Flute and The Marriage of Figaro for Opera Australia touring Melissa Farrow has been principal flute of the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra since 2003, and a core member of the Australian Haydn Ensemble since its formation. She performs and records regularly with groups including Pinchgut Opera, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, and Ironwood among others. She has appeared as a soloist numerous times with AHE, NZ Barok, the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, and Pinchgut Opera.

BEETHOVEN’S PASTORAL MASTER WORKS IN CHAMBER VERSION
BEETHOVEN’S PASTORAL SYMPHONY AND MOZART’S HAFFNER SERENADE ARRANGED FOR A SEPTET WITH FLUTE, STRING QUINTET AND DOUBLE BASS. The Australian Haydn Ensemble is well known for unearthing forgotten composers and historical chamber versions of the classics. This program brings to light two of the greats: Beethoven’s Pastoral symphony and Mozart’s Haffner Serenade. Beethoven often criticised chamber versions of his own works by other composers. Watt’s c. 1810 arrangement of Beethoven’s masterwork, The Pastoral however, is a vibrant and passionate reinterpretation of this dramatic work that will capture your imagination and reinvent it for you as a septet. Mozart’s Serenade No. 7 or the Haffner Serenade as it is often called, is one of his most well-known and frequently performed works. The original orchestral work was commissioned by Mozart’s contemporary and friend, Sigmund Haffner, for the wedding of his sister Marie Elisabeth Haffner in 1776. Masi’s chamber arrangement
was published in the early 19th century as part of a set of popular Mozart symphonies for the same instrumentation as Watt’s arrangement of the Beethoven. Masi’s arrangement reflects Mozart’s own shortened version of the Haffner Serenade that omits three of the original movements. Even in this reduced version, he captures the bright energy that one imagines Mozart hoped to convey at the premiere performance on the eve of the Haffner wedding. AHE also performs a beautiful, dark and moving string sextet in F minor by Luigi Boccherini. Boccherini takes the listener on a journey full of drama, melancholy and dance - a characteristic of his music that makes it a listening pleasure.

Beethoven’s sonata output was prolific, writing thirty-two piano sonatas, ten violin sonatas and five for cello. This creative concert film experience will take you on a musical journey through some of the greatest moments including his famous violin sonata The Spring, the piano sonata Pathétique and the sumptuous Sonata for cello and piano in G minor Op. 5 No. 2. Beethoven’s Spring Sonata for violin and piano is one of his most loved works. Published in 1801, Beethoven dedicated the work to Count Moritz von Fries.

A LIFE IN LETTERS
JOHN BELL JOINS AHE FOR A NEW THEATRICAL TELLING OF THE PUBLISHED NINETEENTH CENTURY LETTERS OF STENDHAL ‘THE LIFE OF HAYDN’. This exciting new theatrical production by Bell and AHE brings to life a set of early 19th century fictional letters in a new production that is part drama, part performance. Set in Vienna, Bell’s monologue embodies the nameless letter writer, and his performance is interwoven with selections of Haydn’s music performed by AHE. This project is sure to be a thought-provoking experience that will transport audiences to another time and world. Although not entirely factual, the letters are considered to be a significant insight into 18th century culture. They were published by the 19th century French Romantic novelist Marie- Henri Beyle under the pseudonym of ‘Stendhal’. Beyle is best known for his novels Le Rougeet le noir (1830; The Red and the Black) and La Chartreuse de Parme (1839; The Charterhouse of Parma). ‘Stendhal’s’ collected letters are thought to be largely copied from other authors of the time including Giuseppe Carpini.
Published initially in the early 19th century as the Life of Haydn: In a Series of Letters Written at Vienna, they present a fictional account based on Haydn's life in a beautiful narrative style that transports the reader to Haydn’s side in post-revolutionary and post-Napoleonic Europe. Told through the eyes of a fictional friend and admirer of Haydn, the letters to ‘Louis’ begin with a vivid “Description of Haydn's residence— of his appearance in his old age—of Vienna, and the Prater—character of the society of Vienna”, and go on to trace Haydn’s humble beginnings as a struggling artist and the son of a rural cartwright, and his rise to become the most famous composer of the late 18th century. Bell and AHE bring Stendhal’s account to life along with other historical material including Haydn’s own letters in a new script by Rachel McDonald.

AHE PRESENTS AN ORCHESTRAL PROGRAM FEATURING MOZART’S PRAGUE SYMPHONY, HIS STUNNING PIANO CONCERTO NO. 21. 'ELVIRA MADIGAN' & HAYDN'S SYMPHONY NO. 95. Mozart’s life was tragically cut short in 1791 at the tender age of just 35. In stark contrast, this was the same year that Haydn traveled to London, where he was viewed as a celebrity with his performances drawing huge crowds, and rose to the peak of his fame. Meanwhile, Mozart died in relative poverty in Vienna, a poignant juxtaposition of the lives of the two men. One wonders what Mozart would have achieved had he lived as long as Haydn. This final program for 2021 brings together one of Mozart’s most loved late piano concertos No. 21, made famous by the film Elvira Madigan, with his beautiful Prague Symphony and a powerful C minor symphony of Haydn.
Mozart's first visit, from which came the work's nickname. The program opens with Haydn’s powerful C minor Symphony No. 95 completed in 1791, the tragic year of Mozart's death and during Haydn's first visit to London. During that trip Haydn composed his set of twelve famous London Symphonies, of which this is the fourth. It is the only symphony of the set that the composer wrote in a minor key and without a slow introduction. The dramatic opening of the work in the powerful key of C minor sets the tone for a dramatic program.

The AHE digital series will broadcast from May to December, 2021. Premiere months are listed on the event pages and will be updated online to specific dates closer to the premiere. Once a concert has premiered, digital members may enjoy unlimited access to the films alongside an accompanying library of content on demand until 31 December 2021.
