DIRECTORS’ WELCOME This music industry has never seen so much disruption and change. That makes this forum more relevant than ever. Now we don’t pretend to have all the answers, however we do know how to have a healthy and robust discussion. The music industry has always been like that. We implore you to attend as many sessions as you can and get right amongst it. This in itself produces results and crystallises how to move forward, be creative and garner a living out of this business that is music. Sure it’s tough on some fronts. That said, experienced industry writers like our special guest Bob Lefsetz, will tell you that if you have the talent the opportunities are greater now than they have ever been. We have come through many phases since the minstrels roamed our lands playing their music when the only technology that existed for them was their instrument. That was the only way you paid back then and just maybe we have come full circle. We are in our fifth year and our attendance continues to grow year on year. We have kept our prices low to make Australian Music Week accessible to as many that are interested. This is due solely to the wonderful partners that have supported us in 2019. Take note of who they are in this programme and make sure you support them whenever you can. Without them there is no Australian Music Week. This is a music project driven by passion alone and their support inspires me to continue the deliver a platform that absolutely has export potential. Sincerely I personally thank each and every one of our partners for their support. Enjoy the next 5 days. Dig in, network, teach and learn. What you get out of this will be equal to what you put in. —Geoff Trio and the AMW Team

THURSDAY 7TH NOVEMBER 10.30am - 11.30am / Cinema 2 MODERATOR Paul Cashmere (Noise11) SPEAKERS Bob Lefsetz (The LefsetzLetter)

Bob Lefsetz, Santa Monica-based industry legend, is the author of the e-mail newsletter, “The Lefsetz Letter.” Famous for being beholden to no one and speaking the truth, Lefsetz addresses the issues that are at the core of the music business: streaming, ticketing and the music itself. His intense brilliance captivates readers from Steven Tyler to Drake to Deadmau5 to Quincy Jones to music business honchos like Michael Rapino, Jay Marciano, Steve Barnett and Irving Azoff. In these days of turmoil, “The Lefsetz Letter” is a must-read. Never boring, always entertaining, Mr. Lefsetz’s insights are fueled by his stint as an entertainment business attorney, majordomo of Sanctuary Music’s American division and consultancies to major labels. Bob has gotten into his fair share of very public stoushes with very high-profile people who haven’t taken kindly to what he’s had to say, including Taylor Swift (said she couldn’t sing), Kid Rock (wrote ‘f... Kid Rock’), Gene Simmons (criticised the KISS bassist’s keynote speech at a music conference in 2009) and Live Nation Chairman Irving Azoff (assailed the seven-figure salaries of Live Nation execs). But why talk about Bob when the man himself can tell you all you want to know and more when he presents a keynote address at this year’s Australian Music Week. Before that, we let Lefsetz loose on a Q&A. Enjoy. What tone are you hoping to set for the aspiring artists and audiences at Australian Music Week when you deliver your keynote?
best live bands. Down Under is always on our minds. We’re looking. So it’s easier to communicate, but harder to get noticed. . . FOR EVERYBODY! Do you think you can make a difference with your writings and voice in the music industry? Who knows? If you can gain insight from my writings, great. As different trends in the music industry have come and gone, what is your current least favourite thing? The industry’s focus on the Spotify Top 50. The hit chart means less than it ever did. There are a bunch of burgeoning sounds out there that don’t get enough attention, even though they may have a strong audience. From your analyses, are you able to forecast what trends we may expect to occur in 2020? The growth of non-hip hop and pop music. We’ve figured out the technology, now it’s about the music. We’re always looking for something new and different. What is the future for major labels or have they been usurped by recent changes in distribution to the point of no return? Nobody can blow something up like a major. But they’re only interested in hip hop and pop, at least in the US, leaving the rest of the field to their detriment. If you don’t make music that can get on the radio or get big TV coverage, don’t sign with the major, they can’t help you. But don’t forget, people will always go for the cash and the major labels have it.
Quit. Only the ones who ignore this advice will have a chance of making it. As that legendary Australian band AC/DC once sang: ‘It’s a long way to the top if you wanna rock & roll.’ The music must be in your soul. And the music is only half of it. . . the person you are, your drive, your relationships, are key. I hate false optimism, but the world needs great music and if you can deliver it we’re all ears.
The story goes that you wanted to be a music journalist, but was discouraged by an unsupportive writing professor; what would you say to that professor today, given your success?
In your time analysing the music industry, how have you seen the Australian market grow and change?
The world doesn’t need music journalists, but it does need great writers. We’ll read the work of great writers on any subject. If yours happens to be music, we’re eager to read you.
We live in a world of cacophony. No scene dominates, it’s hard to get attention. Insiders know that Australia has the
F... you! Your own advice for aspiring music journalists in this day and age?

As music companies continue to see more women in managerial and leadership roles, gender disparity remains significant in other facets of the industry. According to Women in Music Stats www.womeninmusic.org/stats the gender divide across all regions is roughly 70% male to 30% female. We’ve curated a brain’s trust of music industry managers to provide insight from their careers and explore strategic solutions for systemic change. We encourage diverse perspectives and will invite participation from attendees in a Q&A session following the panel.

Digital marketing experts estimate that most are exposed to approximately 7,000 ads every day. That is absurd! Now that everyone is at full speed across their corporate and personal lives, (which are increasingly blurred) how do organisations ‘cut through’ with genuine messages to their target audience? Brands are increasingly turning to music to promote themselves – but why and how? Whether you are a rights holder, a marketer, a musician, or a fan, learn what’s important for brands and how they can ‘make it real’.

In 2004 JWM and Eleven launched the career of much loved Australian singer/songwriter Missy Higgins. She has worked with the companies ever since and enjoyed three consecutive #1 albums in this country including her iconic “The Sound Of White” which was certified 9 times platinum. In 2009 Gotye joined JWM/Eleven in conjunction with then co-manager Danny Rogers. Gotye’s 2011 album “Making Mirrors” – propelled by the global #1 hit “Somebody That I Used To Know “ - won 3 Grammys and he remains an important artist for both companies. For the last 8 years JWM has managed the contemporary rock group Birds Of Tokyo who have won the APRA Award for Australia’s Best Rock Song on a remarkable five occasions. More recently they added acclaimed Australian electronic music pioneers The Presets to their roster. A hugely anticipated new album by the duo is set for 2018 release. In nearly a decade of working together they have created a virtual second career for the band with multiple chart topping album releases and two massive concert tours plus several other other special shows. In addition to all this John now works on some of the solo projects by Cold Chisel frontman, Jimmy Barnes, including the acclaimed and best selling memoirs “Working Class Boy” (2016) and “Working Class Man” (2017) plus the associated “Stories and Songs” tours and the associated film/s. JWM’s most recent signing is the iconic Australian rock band Midnight Oil. John and his team oversaw The Great Circle World Tour … 77 shows in 16 countries across 5 continents to total audiences in excess of half a million people. None of us really want to have a ”Hello Cleveland” moment! If you have got to the point of attracting an audience you will want the agent to help you navigate the minefield of touring. Most of us can navigate the occasional booking but when you have an agent that believes in you and is on your side things change. Hear what makes an agent tick and how they are able to identify opportunities that you probably didn’t even know existed. This panel literally could be as valuable as gold itself

Friday 8 November SPEAKER PANELS
FRIDAY 8TH NOVEMBER 2.00pm - 3.00pm / Cinema 2 MODERATOR Lars Brandle (Billboard) SPEAKER Geoff Jones (TEG)
Geoff Jones served for 18 years in the Australian Defence Force, latterly as a Lieutenant-Colonel. Today Geoff tours global artists such as Eminem, Katy Perry, Hugh Jackman and Queen, as well Australian stars such as Hilltop Hoods, Amy Shark, Keith Urban, Grinspoon and John Butler Trio. It’s a remarkable tale, one you won’t hear anywhere else in the music industry and it’s about to take a new twist. Geoff is the Chief Executive of TEG and the architect of the company’s integrated model across live entertainment content, ticketing, and technology, including its coveted analytics business. Under Geoff’s leadership, TEG has grown into a true Australian success story, punching above its weight in the
global live entertainment arena every day. But the story doesn’t end there. TEG’s potential for further growth was acknowledged in October when Silicon Valley private equity firm Silver Lake agreed to buy the company. The news made headlines across the world, from Sydney to London via New York. Silver Lake has never invested in Australia before but it knows a thing or two about live entertainment: its many other investments include Endeavor, Madison Square Garden Group and UFC. It’s also the global leader in technology investing, with investments such as Alibaba Group, Dell Technologies, and Ancestry. In this exclusive session, Geoff will reveal: • how he and his team took TEG to this historic moment in the company’s 40-year history, • what the Silver Lake deal means for TEG and its many different stakeholders, and • what the future holds for TEG as it prepares to roll its integrated model out further internationally. Along the way, Geoff will discuss TEG’s integrated business model and its use of insights and analytics and share his unique perspective on the Australian live entertainment industry. Attendees will also get to see the
affable, no nonsense, Brisbane-born bloke behind the TEG success story in action in a rare conference appearance. Geoff will be interviewed by leading Australian music journalist Lars Brandle. Lars is Australian correspondent for Billboard and contributor to The Industry Observer. After leaving the army in 1998 Geoff Jones joined entertainment marketing firm IMG as a director for four years then spent another four as national sales director of Foster’s. Geoff’s association with TEG began in 2007 when he was appointed CEO of Ticketek. He spent three years growing its market share, partnerships and ticketing technology innovation. After a stint as a Partner and Director of SEL, one of Australia’s leading sports and entertainment companies, Geoff returned in 2011 to lead the diversification of Ticketek and its affiliated companies into live entertainment promotion and tech to create TEG, Asia Pacific’s largest diversified entertainment company. TEG was sold by Nine in 2015 for $640 million to Affinity Partners. Since then it has expanded rapidly, both organically and through acquisitions including Melbournebased Dainty Group, several deals in Asia and most recently a decisive move into the UK with The MJR Group. TEG has reportedly more than doubled in value under Geoff’s leadership since 2015.

In the last 3 months new artists have mostly been discovered through radio closely followed by word of mouth. Don’t believe everything you read. Radio is relevant and you need to understand which radio and why. Jump into this panel and dive into what happens behind the scenes from those that are closest.
AMERICANA - NETWORK TO NASHVILLE.....AND BACK AGAIN! FRIDAY 8TH NOVEMBER 2.00pm - 3.00pm / Cinema 6 MODERATOR Adam Simon (Americana Music Association of Australia) SPEAKERS Lachlan Bryan (Artist), Dan Biddle (CMAA), Glenn Dickie (Sounds Australia), David Garnham (Artist) Amongst the amazing showcase of artists and industry professionals at AmericanaFest each September In Nashville, Australians have always had a strong representation. But how much work goes into getting there can often be a little daunting. And then there is the all important follow through when the conference is over. The opportunity to attend the conference and showcase at the festival is such a fantastic opportunity, so an artist needs to ensure that they capitalise on it as much as possible. Our panel is a collective of artists and industry who have attended AmericanaFest and can share some insight, from the starting point of planning your festival application, preparing for the trip and following through on the network gained when you get back home.
Friday 8 November SPEAKER PANELS
Peter Garrett is a long-time advocate and campaigner on a range of local and global issues. A member of Midnight Oil, one of Australia’s most successful bands, he served as a cabinet minister in the Rudd/ Gillard Labor governments from 2007-13. The ‘Oils’ are renowned for their fierce independent stance and active support of the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and protection of the environment. The band’s protest and benefit shows, most notably the anti-Exxon performance on the back of a truck in the streets of New York, and the ‘Sorry suits’ appearance at the closing of the 2000 Sydney Olympics, were hallmarks of a 13-album career leading to an ARIA lifetime achievement award in 2006. Peter Garrett was appointed the youngestever President of the Australian Conservation Foundation (1989-96). Significant results were achieved in his first term for many threatened areas of Australia’s natural heritage including Queensland’s Wet Tropics and Jervis Bay in NSW. The second term saw ACF’s profile expand with the development of partnerships with non-government and business organisations and increased focus on marine issues and Northern Australia. Peter entered federal parliament as the Member for Kingsford Smith in 2004. In 2007, Labor won government and he was appointed Minister for the Environment, Heritage & the Arts. This role saw substantial additions to Australia’s national reserve system, particularly to Indigenous Protected Areas, along with increased investment and new programs for conservation of the Great Barrier Reef. As Minister for the Environment, Peter Garrett was instrumental in the campaign against so called “scientific whaling” in the Antarctic, culminating in Australia’s successful challenge to Japanese whaling in the International Court of Justice in 2014. He secured agreement to a national waste policy leading to Australia’s first ever e-waste recycling scheme, and delivered a long awaited resale royalty scheme for visual artists. Following the 2010 election Peter was sworn in as Minister for School Education, Early Childhood and Youth. In that role he secured a broad suite of education reforms. These included legislating, for the first time, a needs-based funding system for all Australian schools, as well as implementing a national curriculum and initiating indigenous ranger cadetships for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. A member of the Order of Australia for contributions to the music industry and environment, and an Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters (France), in 2010 he received the ‘Leaders for a Living Planet’ award from WWF Australia & International. In 2015, Peter Garrett’s best selling memoir ‘Big Blue Sky’ was published described as “something much greater than a political autobiography. It is a true memoir…a beautifully written autobiography, but also a social, cultural and political history of great depth and moment.” In 2016 Peter’s debut solo album ‘A Version of Now’ was released and toured nationally with his band the Alter Egos. In 2017, Midnight Oil embarked on The Great Circle World Tour – with most dates selling out within 24 hours, the band played across 14 countries.
