Cronulla Australian Music Week Festival set to make music to please lovers of all genres | St George & Sutherland Shire Leader

It is being billed as a five-day celebration of live music and showcases of Australian and international talent and will be held at various venues in the Cronulla CBD and plaza, culminating in the Hi Fi Days Festival at Gunnamatta Park on Sunday, November 22. The event is the brainchild of Brass Monkey owner Geoff Trio who describes it as a summit for music industry executives, recording professionals, artists and music lovers. ‘‘It is all about getting music industry people together to discuss the current state of the industry and where it is moving forward to,’’ Mr Trio said. ‘‘It is a chance for young Australian bands to showcase themselves. ‘‘We aim to have up to 110 artists, Australian and international, appearing at various venues at Cronulla including Brass Monkey, Sting Bar, JDs Bar and Grill, and El Sol. ‘‘The idea is to take this event to the world stage and sit alongside events such as SXSW in Texas, CMJ in New York and Canadian Music Week in Toronto.’’ The festival, which aims to bring together all musical genres including pop, rock, blues and folk, will be a mix of free and ticketed events. Several free stages will be set up around Cronulla CBD. Licensing police, who have given their support, are working with festival management to ensure the event goes ahead smoothly. ‘‘This will be an annual event and the plans are to grow every year and put Cronulla on the tourism and cultural map,’’ Mr Trio said. Are you excited about the festival?

'Captured' Video Project Returns For Its Third Year ♫ theMusic.com.au | Australia’s Premier Music News & Reviews Website

Aus Music Week Music Video Comp Goes National

Health Media and The Australian Music Week (AMW) have announced they'll be teaming up to present Captured: Australia which returns for its third edition.

The music video project pairs up local bands and artists with emerging film-makers to create a short film or music video under five minutes. The completed videos are then shown to the public where they can vote on their favourite projects via an online campaign — the past two editions of the Captured project were seen by over 500,000 people in each year. This year will see the campaign expand beyond focusing on artists living in NSW to go nationwide. Meanwhile the AMW will hold its music summit November 18-22 in Cronulla and the first round of speakers for the event have been announced. Confirmed to appear at the summit include a number of some of the country's leading music figures including Gregg Donovan (Wonderlick), Katie Rynne (Select), Nick Yates (Unified), Karen Lee Goody (Entertainment Consulting), Johann Ponniah (I Oh You), Maggie Collins (Fans Creative Management/triple j), Basil Cook (ABC Music), Vanessa Picken (Comes With Fries), Damian Costin (123), Chrissie Vincent (Chrissie Vincent Publicity & Management), Scott Crawford (PledgeMusic), Hazel Savage (Moment Media) Scott Mesiti (MJR Presents & Cross Section), Jess Beston (Tiny Monster Management), Stuart Coupe (Laughing Outlaw Records) and more. Tickets are on sale now — to purchase, as well to apply for the Captured project, head to the AMW website for more details. Carla Grossetti bio

The streets of Cronulla were crawling with creative types this month for the suburb's inaugural Australian Music Week. Carla Grossetti wraps it up. "I'm a great believer in Australian music. We have to get the youth of Australia into live music or we're stuffed," says promoter, agent and raconteur Ted Gardner. As co-founder of Lollapalooza festival, former manager of bands such as Jane's Addiction, Tool, Verve and Queens of the Stone Age, Gardner should know. The controversial artist manager was one of many industry greats in the spotlight during Cronulla's inaugural Australian Music Week, which Gardner declared in an interview with Stuart Coupe "a showcase for the industry's growth".

Trio a hard act to follow Although director Geoff Trio and his team have spent much of the past year planning the event - which featured more than 150 artists performing close to 250 shows on 18 stages over three days - he is not about to rest on his laurels. "The plan is to make this festival an annual event. In order to achieve that, we have to start work on next year's event and capitalise on this year's success," says Trio, who also coowns El Sol Mexican and the Brass Monkey and manages local acts The Lazys and Rin http://www.visittheshire.com.au/blog/australian-music-week-a-smash-hit

McArdle. "The feedback I've been getting is so hugely positive. As well as luring serious industry greats here to talk about the changing landscape, we had artists making major connections with booking agents and managers who were actively looking to sign new acts," he says.

Music to Cronulla's ears Trio, who grew up in Sydney's southern suburbs, says he was inspired to curate the event in Cronulla after attending the SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas and the Big Sound in Brisbane. "I grew up in the Shire and I thought 'Wouldn't it be great if we could do something like this in Cronulla?' where the focus is on putting more music in front of more people and celebrating emerging talent," says Trio.

"We wanted to help young artists learn from the experts on how to better navigate the landscape and cut through the noise and be heard." - Geoff Trio. Festival attendees were given the opportunity to see acts such as hip-hop artist Waza at Shucked Oyster Bar, hear from the controversial co-founder of Lollapalooza Ted Gardner http://www.visittheshire.com.au/blog/australian-music-week-a-smash-hit

(former manager of Jane's Addiction) about his highs and lows in the industry and learn from workshops entitled What do Record Labels Even Do? and Getting a Start in the Music Industry. The festival wrapped up on Sunday with HiFi Days, which included headline act UB40 as well as acts such as Caravana Sun, The Hot Potato Band and Fripps & Fripps.

Captured puts musicians in the spotlight AMW also collaborated with the editor of AU Review, Larry Heath on Captured: Australia a national music video competition, with the winning band and winning filmmaker revealed later in the year Hip hop singer Waza believes the range of topics discussed during the industry-related workshops had the potential to give emerging artists a nudge down the right path. "If I had attended an event like this 15 years ago when I was starting out I reckon I would have achieved the success I am enjoying now so much sooner," says Waza, whose music video for Lost in Space is one of the Captured: Australia finalists. "AMW gives us, as artists, the opportunity to meet face to face with industry experts and agents rather than trying to connect via email or over the phone. It's very insightful to hear speakers such as Nick Findlay from Triple J saying 'it's not enough to have a song on the Jay's playlist. You need to get out and build your own fan base which creates its own momentum'. That kind of advice is gold," he says.

Gigs and all that jazz Singer songwriter Kristafor Farrenkothen says as well as being given the opportunity to play lots of gigs back to back, he was invited to support other acts on upcoming tours and make connections with other musos. He says what surprised him most about his trip to Sydney's south was discovering the cool counter-culture that exists in Cronulla. Stephen Wade, director, Select Music Agency says artists must understand that success first and foremost - relies on 'building a community'. And that, say the organisers of AMW is what the music festival was all about. A brand new music industry conference heading to Sydney this November, Australian Music Week has announced its second round of speakers, along with news that they will be partnering with SoundsLikeCafe (SLC) for a series of acoustic showcases.

Among this round of noteworthy and influential speakers is The Music's own Leigh Treweek, Yours & Owls' Ben Tillman, New World Artists' Edwin Tehrani, Dew Process' John Mullen, triple j's Nick Findlay, Live Music Office's John Wardle and Century Venues' Sam Nardo. Meanwhile, SLC are responsible for servicing music from the likes of Norah Jones, Sam Smith and The Kooks to cafes around Australia, with a history of running and curating stages at festivals such as Peats Ridge and Sydney Blues and Roots Festival, too. SLC's Managing Director, Marshall Cullen, says, "Teaming up with such a worthy and long overdue event is a perfect fit for SoundsLikeCafe. It seems like every other city has a consistent yearly music event of this nature and the AMW folk should be applauded for putting on such a great event that will benefit the local music community as well as the wider national music industry." Australian Music Week Launches | Music Australia

Australian Music Week will be held for the first time in Cronulla between 18 and 22 November 2015. Described as “a brand spanking new festival, music industry conference and artist showcase”, the five-day extravaganza is promising panels, master classes, networking sessions and opportunities for local talent to perform in front of “top music industry professionals”. The man behind Australian Music Week is Geoff Trio, owner of Cronulla’s Brass Monkey. “It is all about getting music industry people together to discuss the current state of the industry and where it is moving forward to,’’ Mr Trio said. ‘‘It is a chance for young Australian bands to showcase themselves. The idea is to take this event to the world stage and sit alongside events such as SXSW in Texas, CMJ in New York and Canadian Music Week in Toronto.” Up to 110 acts will perform at various live music venues in Cronulla, such as Brass Monkey, El Sol and Sting Bar. Artist applications open on Wednesday 8 July.

Australian Music Week to be a five-day celebration of live music - Australasian Leisure Management

To be held in and around the southern Sydney beachside suburb of Cronulla from 18th to 22nd November, the event will combine a new festival, music industry conference and artist showcase. The event will be held at various venues in Cronulla, culminating in the Hi Fi Days Festival at Gunnamatta Park on Sunday 22nd November. The event is the brainchild of Brass Monkey owner Geoff Trio who describes it as a summit for music industry executives, recording professionals, artists and music lovers. Introducing the event, Trio told local newspaper the St George & Sutherland Shire Leader "it is all about getting music industry people together to discuss the current state of the industry and where it is moving forward to (and its also) a chance for young Australian bands to showcase themselves. "We aim to have up to 110 artists, Australian and international, appearing at various venues at Cronulla including Brass Monkey, Sting Bar, JDs Bar and Grill, and El Sol. "The idea is to take this event to the world stage and sit alongside events such as SXSW in Texas, CMJ in New York and Canadian Music Week in Toronto." The festival, which aims to bring together all musical genres including pop, rock, blues and folk, will be a mix of free and ticketed events. Several free stages will be set up around Cronulla CBD. The conference part of the event will include panel, masterclass and networking sessions lead by some of the most successful and influential people in the business. An Australian Music Week spokesperson added "each evening we’ll be showcasing Australia's most promising up and coming talent, who’ll have the opportunity to play live in front of top music industry professionals. "The live showcases are also open to the pubic, so any music lover will able to purchase a single ticket and gain access to multiple venues."

Organisers have also partnered with SoundsLikeCafe (SLC) for a series of acoustic showcases. http://www.ausleisure.com.au/news/australian-music-week-to-be-a-five-day-celebration-of-live-music/

Australian Music Week Unveils First 30 Acts For 2015 Event ♫ theMusic.com.au | Australia’s Premier Music News & Reviews Website

Australian Music Week Unveils First 30 Acts For 2015 Event

Clockwise from top left: BANFF, Guards Of May, The Belligerents, Ivan Ooze Aug 18th 2015 | 2:28pm | Staff Writer Tweet New South Wales' inaugural Australian Music Week celebrations are coming together in true style for 2015, with organisers today revealing a 30-strong first-round line-up of acts destined to rock venues across Cronulla this November featuring the likes of BANFF, Guards Of May, Ivan Ooze, The Belligerents and more.

Demonstrating an admirable penchant for musical diversity, AMW has conscripted a broad-ranging selection of artists to help drive the live-music festivities in among the event's five packed days of panels, masterclasses, interviews, breakout sessions and workshops. Joining the event's previously announced batch of speakers and the aforementioned artists are musicians from all walks including Black Bird Hum, Betty & Oswald, Captives, Charity-Rose Turner, Demi Louise, Ed Wells, Hussy Hicks, I Am Apollo, Knox, Leanne Tennant, Lepers & Crooks, Neighbour, The Morrisons, Tropical Zombie and WAXHEAD, among several others. If you're an artist or in a band and are interested in performing at AMW, fear not - applications have been extended until Tuesday, 8 September, so you should mosey on over to the event's website to get your details in for a shot at being named in one of the consequent live-music line-ups still to come. In addition, Australian Music Week has announced a showcase for the newly partnered Canadian Independent Music Association and East Coast Music Association, who together will offer up two artists each to showcase at the event. "We're really excited by this opportunity," AMW director Geoff Trio said in a statement. "By opening this opportunity for Canadian artists, we will aim to work on reciprocal deals for Australian acts in Canada and other international markets, which we hope will result in tour swaps and collaborations in writing, recordings etc." The first Australian Music Week event runs from 18-22 November in venues across Cronulla. See the event's website for more information.

COOPER, ED WELLS and RIN MCARDLE. They all put on such incredible performances, showcasing their vocal talents, songwriting skills, and in Ed’s case… Saxophone playing! Earlier on the Thursday, Source Music’s Canadian representative, Charlie A’Court performed at The Brass Monkey and he blew the crowd away with his powerful and soulful voice (watch: here) “The surprise highlight of the evening was watching 21-year-old Ed Wells mesmerise the crowd at Croydon Lane. This talented pianist drew the attention of the bustling bar with his beautifully heart-wrenching vocals and impressive loop-pedal skills. The intricate layering of keys, vocals, beat-boxing and electronica added to the simple beauty that is one person and a piano.” – The Music Watch the video below for some snippets from the Showcase SOURCE MUSIC SHOWCASE • Australian Music Week Posted by Source Music on Sunday, 22 November 2015 SOURCE MUSIC SHOWCASE • Australian Music Week Posted by Source Music on Sunday, 22 November 2015 Tags: amw, australian music week, brass monkey, canada, canadian, charlie a'court, cronulla, croydon lane, ed wells, hein cooper, manly, marvell, music, rin mcardle, showcase, singer, songwriter, source music, the brass monkey, the music, vocal

Bad Pony set to play at Australian Music Week festival If you’re not too familiar with Bad Pony or their music you’re in for a massive treat if you hit up Australian Music Week this month. 2012 and gathered impressive accolades like RAW Australian Musicians of the Year in 2013. We caught up with front man Jarred Young about the band’s involvement with the new festival and their new EP, Limbo.

“SAM AND I HAVE BEEN TO BIGSOUND IN BRISBANE THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS AND HAD AN ABSOLUTE BALL. AMW SEEMS TO BE A SIMILAR SET UP TO THAT, BUT CLOSER TO HOME AND WITH MORE LOCAL ACTS. IT LOOKS LIKE IT’S GOING TO BE A GREAT TIME AND A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR US AND THE NSW MUSIC INDUSTRY IN GENERAL,” SAYS YOUNG. Australian Music Week is about exhibiting Australia’s upcoming talent and networking, which Young says the band is thrilled to be a part of it. “They’re great opportunities to showcase to a large audience of typically strangers. And it’s a good place to meet like-minded people. I think it’s also important for bands new or established to support new festivals or new music related endeavours.” As founders and original members of Bad Pony, Young says he and Sam Thomlinson know what it’s like struggling for that first music break. “We’ve all been doing music for a fair while now, I think it’s getting easier as we’ve done the rounds before and now know what we’re doing and have made friends within the music community.” Bad Pony

The group’s debut EP, Limbo is a dynamic serve up of vintage indie rock, where impassioned melodies meet a refreshing approach to the quintet’s songwriting. Young reveals that the songs and title of the EP all have a theme of uncertainty running throughout, which can be taken as both the melancholy notion of being in limbo, or the jubilant fun you have playing party game, ‘Limbo’. In other words, it’s basically whatever you want it to be. “Limbo was written over a period of two to three years, so the EP itself contains the evolution. In saying that, we’re constantly evolving. There’s some darker, rockier stuff we’re writing and some soul-influenced stuff creeping in. We’re really all over the place.” White Russian in particular deserves an honourable mention. The buoyant pop anthem with a latin inspired rhythm, will have even the most begrudging dancer on their feet. Young’s unique drummer-less set up of mismatched cymbals and drums, is the driving force of most tracks on the record. The band is also well known for their honest lyricism, which Young happens to write. “Lyric writing comes fairly easy to me when I’m feeling super passionate about a certain topic or an event that’s happened. Luckily, all of the songs on Limbo come from a place of passion so none of them were too taxing.”

Their initial idea of trying to fit into the folky-acoustic pocket of the music industry, failed when the boys discovered their unique blend of sounds couldn’t be cramped into a particular genre. “We tend not to confine ourselves to one specific genre and just let out whatever comes to us. I think you can hear the mix of sounds on the EP and the next two singles we have coming out will be very different too,” says Young. So what can you expect from Bad Pony if you catch them live at AMW? “Smiles, sweat, drums, dancing, sweat and smiles.” “It’s not really a matter of putting in the energy or enthusiasm, we love the shit out of it so it comes naturally. It helps that we love the shit out of each other as well.” Australian Music Week will be held from November 18 to November 22. Tickets are on sale here from Oztix. Bad Pony’s EP Limbo can be purchased on iTunes here.

Legendary reggae band UB40 will headline a Gunnamatta Park concert which will end the inaugural Australian Music Week Festival at Cronulla on November 18-22. The five-day festival of live music will showcase Australian and international talent at various venues in the Cronulla CBD and plaza (http://www.theleader.com.au/story/3183549/cronulla-australian-music-weekfestival-set-to-make-music-to-please-lovers-of-all-genres/), culminating in the HiFi Days concert at Gunnamatta Park, with UB40 on Sunday, November 22. Other HiFi Days performers will be Grinspoon lead singer Phil Jamieson, The Bamboos and Cronulla groups Caravana Sun and Fripps and Fripps. The event is the brainchild of Brass Monkey owner Geoff Trio who describes it as ‘‘a summit for music industry executives, recording professionals, artists and music lovers’’. Securing UB40 as the headline act is the result of months of negotiations. ‘‘UB40 is a major coup,’’ Mr Trio said. ‘‘It’s a first to have an act that is know around the world to headline a concert at Cronulla. ‘‘To get such a big international act of this level to come to Cronulla is a major achievement.’’

Mr Trio said he expected about 2500 people at the family-oriented concert. Ed Wells talks Australian Music Week, time in the UK, new track and more – the AU review

Having grown up in London, Hong Kong and Sydney, Ed Wells has had the rare experience of breaking into the music scene in the UK and Australia at the same time. In our Australian Music Week interview, the musician chats to our Editor-in-Chief Larry, about his time in the UK, his new track, expectations and more. We’ll jump straight in. To start off, could you introduce yourself for me? My name is Ed Wells, and I’m here for Australian Music Week. That’s right. We’re here sitting at the El Sol Restaurant in Cronulla for the inaugural Australia Music Week. Let’s chat a little bit about what you’ve been up to since we saw you earlier in the year. You’ve spent a bit of time in the UK… how has the last few months gone for you? It’s been good fun. The UK was a bit of a holiday which was nice, sort of get a break in, going to do some stuff with family and things, and then came back and just been writing as much as I can, and then just released the latest single, ‘Snow’ right at the end of last month, and that premiered yesterday online. It’s been really good, a lot of stuff happening so, looking forward to the rest of the year and next year. So tell me a little bit about putting this track together. Is this something you’ve recorded recently or something you’ve had up your sleeve for a while? I think we did the recording in September… yeah, I was working with a guy called Paul Najar who was doing the production, and he was fantastic because he only lives two minutes down the road. I’d sorta get out of bed at nine in the morning and just go straight there, and he was really good. Some days we were doing twelve, thirteen hour days just working on tiny little things, which, you know, for me, it’s sorta the first time I’ve worked properly with a producer. I really enjoyed it. And having that sort of sound onboard as well, it was really helpful. What were your expectations going into that – the first time working with a producer – obviously there are certain expectations there… I’ve worked with Paul before on ‘Sparrow and Seed’ and other songs when I went in sort of at the start of the year, but he was more http://music.theaureview.com/interviews/ed-wells-talks-australian-music-week-time-in-the-uk-new-track-and-more/

just doing the engineering then, so I didn’t really know what to expect in terms of how involved he’d get in the track and things, but he was fantastic. He left it up to me but then gave me his thoughts on what we could do, because, obviously, his technology is probably a bit bit better than mine. When we got to the synth stuff, because we were mainly trying to do a lot more, electronic side of things to the new songs so, he was really helpful with that. I think he did a really good job. It was recorded then, but lyrically, is it a song you were working on for quite a while? Yeah, well, I had this song from the end of last year when I spent about six months in the UK, and I’ve been in London for quite a few of those months and I barely had access to a piano for most of it, so I hadn’t really played much. I had my guitar with me but other than that, not a lot. And then I went up and visited family in Yorkshire, where they all live, and my aunt and uncle have a piano, so I spent heaps of time just on that… probably, slightly anti-social but… when playing a bit of piano… They had quite early snowfall for that sort of time so, ‘Snow’ sort of came out of that, and then sort of December last year, and then I just kept working until I was happy with what it could be. You’ve gotta be in that part of the world to bring out a song like that, I think. Cronulla beach isn’t really the place to inspire a song called ‘Snow’, unless you’re talking about something else… Yeah, that’s true. That’s what we said… we were talking about the release of it… we said if the timing is wrong and people don’t get it then we’ll just make it about cocaine. There you go. We’ll have to listen to the song again and see if you can interpret it in that way. There will be some Current Affair puff piece on it – “Promoting cocaine abuse: Ed Wells”. So you’re here at Australian Music Week… you’ve got a couple of showcases while you’re here? Yeah, we’ve got four shows. So one tonight which I’m really excited about, for the Source Music Showcase, that is at Croydon Lane. And then the one tomorrow is at JD’s just on the main strip, and I’ll probably play that with a band – I was training with a couple of people yesterday – a couple of friends – who seem keen to play, so I might just do it as a trio or something like that. And then two on Saturday, which will be interesting because I’ve actually got my last uni exam that day, as well, forever, so I’m gonna come straight from there. Oh, congratulations in advance! Oh, I think it’ll be a trainwreck, but we’ll see how it goes... I think that’ll be really, really good fun, so I’m looking forward to them. Busy, busy week. What’s the rest of the year holding for you? What are you up to over the Australian summer? Or are you going home? No, see I live up at the Northern Beaches so, that is home. I’m going to be in the water more often that not, hopefully, and just sort of chilling out over Christmas. So you might have a song called ‘Water’ by the end of the… ‘Ocean’! ‘Hot’! [Laughs] Yeah, so I think it’ll just be chilling out and obviously writing a lot more, because, hopefully, I can get the EP out next year. Maybe another single first, and then EP. But we’ll see how it goes. We’ll leave it on this, we’ll go into your latest track ‘Snow’… anything else you can tell us about the track as we lead into it? I guess – like obviously, ‘Snow’ seems like a fairly obvious title, seeing as it was written in the north of England, but it came about more comparing it to Australia, and how they’re so completely different in the way that, like obviously, Cronulla and the Northern Beaches and stuff are so different to something like, the Yorkshire Dales… but both of them are sort of related by how much of a freedom I think you have in those sorts of places, like how you connect to those sorts of places, which I think was really important, http://music.theaureview.com/interviews/ed-wells-talks-australian-music-week-time-in-the-uk-new-track-and-more/

Ella Fence photographed by Jane Dyson

It’s been a busy year for singer-songwriter Ella Fence with the release of her debut EP Wanderlust this year. Best described as cinematic pop, with swooping vocals that enrapture, her ‘Unknown Water’ track has an evocative overtone and is about the vulnerability that comes with exposing your emotions in an intoxicating relationship. We caught up with Ella at Australian Music Week. Situated in a booth at El Sol Mexican bar early on a Friday morning, she came across as a very generous person who opened up easily and http://www.emergethemag.com/2015/12/01/ella-fence/

was extremely friendly to chat with. Is your ‘Wanderlust’ EP your debut EP? Yes. It took about ten days to record in the studio. Usually the stories come first for me. The first four tracks I worked with producer Dan Swift in Brighton and the fifth track I worked with Ken Stringfellow in Paris. I believe they made a good, strong impact with my music. ‘Unknown Water’ actually started as a poem. I picked a couple of lines for the chorus and reworked it and embellished it. Usually for me the lyrics come first in a free verse poetry form.

How did you make a connect with your producers? I’m currently co-managed by two agencies and I’m lucky to have very strong mentors in the music industry. My agencies are very supportive. My film clip was shown during MIDEM and that’s how the collaborations came into being. What is the best thing about being a musician? Having a captive audience who are really listening to the lyrics and how they’re engaged. The way listeners relate to different things in the music like the experience of a breakup. Often when people have experiences or emotions that can’t be articulated, they can find that articulation in the music. What have been your highlights for 2015? The opportunities, the new avenues and being able to head back to the UK to record again. It was great to release my EP and see how people engage with it. I believe that having my EP is just another medium in which I can connect to other people in the world. I usually play at Studio56, Sound Lounges and some house concerts and for friends events in and around the Gold Coast. I live quite central to Brisbane and Byron and play there often. Ella Fence

Airling. And Aquila Young. She plays the keys when I’m a band and she’s amazing. Every now and then I have a band when I play -keys and drums, and I really enjoy it. What’s on your spotify rotation at the moment? Actually I have a playlist called “My People” (laughs). I listen to a lot of local artists, ‘Hein Cooper’, ‘Kyle Lionhart’, ‘Banks’, and ‘Montaigne’. What’s the worst thing about being a musician? There isn’t really a worst thing. I have a very positive view about being a musician. I guess you can become quite sleep deprived at times but it’s a part of the creative process. There is a lot of input and output and a need to be time efficient. But working hard gets you to where you want to go. Finding the balance between a day job and music can be straining in that you kind of live a double life. There is also the self doubt that comes from creating music. It can be two pronged but

THE HUMAN CONNECTION THAT COMES FROM MUSIC, THAT’S WHAT I LOVE. What is your dream support slot? ‘Florence and the Machine’! would have to be my ultimate dream support slot. It’s all about the end result and also the process to get to the end result and the work that needs to be put in beforehand. I would also love to support ‘Airling’ and ‘Thelma Plum’. What are your plans for 2016? I’ll be spending two months in the UK. For shows I will be playing at Backbone’s ‘2High festival’ and ‘Bleach festival’ in the Gold Coast. I hope to release more music and interestingly I have been cast into a musical that’s a reinvented version of Snow White which is a collaboration between Opera Queensland and La Boite Theatre Company for Brisbane Festival. I haven’t really acted before so it will be a new experience where I can really work on my stagecraft! Wanderlust is available now and can be downloaded from here. Interview by Lisa Nowosad

Festival Promoters Say Multi-Day Events Trump One Day Events

While the topic of the health of Australia’s music festival scene has always been a popular discussion, a number of the country’s leading festival promoters are unanimous on the belief that multi-day events will continue to thrive, while single day events will continue to fall by the wayside.

Speaking at an Australian Music Week panel, entertainment manager Mark Duckworth, Cygnet Folk Festival artistic director Erin Collins and Bluesfest director Peter Noble all agreed that multi-day festivals are more attractive to a wider audience as well as the individual punter. "You’re sort of building a mini community over that length of time," Duckworth said of a multi-day festival. "People loosen up as it goes on and build relationships over that time. I don’t think the one-day can be classed as a festival as such." Collins says audiences are much more capable of connecting with a particular act at a multi-day festival because they are able to explore a particular genre of music much more. "People will discover an act at a multi-day festival and go and see them every time they perform," Collins said. "They become a groupie for that particular act and I think that's a great opportunity to really discover a type of music and you can’t do that at a one-day event." Meanwhile, Noble was far more candid with his opinion, suggesting that one-day events should not be called festivals. "One day events are exactly that. They’re not festivals," he said. "The reason they wanted to use the word festival is because festivals are doing so well and so that was branding exercise. But your Big Day Outs and your Soundwaves are not festivals. They’re events. The sooner we call them what they actually are, the better for our industry." Tweet

Alt-folk artist Irish Mythen announces Australian Tour. Irish-born Canadian troubadour 'Irish' Mythen is on the eve of embarking on her debut Australian tour, with plans to spend the majority of our summer delivering her songs and telling her stories to festival audiences and intimate gatherings from coast to coast. A well-loved and respected singer-songwriter on the thriving Canadian scene, Irish has established herself around the world, and is known for her powerhouse voice and positive stage presence and message. Irish's debut Australian run takes in Festival of Small Halls, The Woodford Folk Festival, Australian Music Week, The Illawarra Folk Festival and solo shows from Brisbane to Perth, please see below for a full list of dates. "One artist who I think everyone agreed on was Irish Mythen. She can whip a crowd into a frenzy of laughter and kinetic energy with an ease I don't often see. Each time I saw her was in a workshop setting with other musicians and I don't envy the struggle of those musicians who had to hold their own in her powerful presence. - John Swartz, www.orilliapacket.com To date, Irish has proudly produced two EPs and three full-length releases. Her latest, self-titled recording won the (Canadian) East Coast Music Award 2015 for roots/traditional solo recording of the year. Irish Mythen has signed her management in Australia to Sydney-based artist services company Rhythm Section Management, Director Jon Howell said: "I saw Irish Mythen play in Canada early this year and was blown away by her sense of humour, quick wit, huge voice, and the way she engages a room. We're thrilled to welcome her to the Rhythm Section stable, and to get the chance to introduce her to Aussie audiences. +32 HiFi Days with UB40 Pictures by Jane Dyson and Anna Warr

The eyes and ears of the music world were focused on Sutherland Shire’s music talent last weekend with the launch of the inaugural Australian Music Week. The event was held at various venues in the Cronulla CBD, culminating in the HiFi Days concert in Gunnamatta Park on Sunday headlined by UB40 who put on a top drawer performance. There were 163 artists playing more than 250 shows at 17 venues around Cronulla. ‘‘There was music everywhere and everybody was smiling about it,’’ Australian Music Week organiser, Geoff Trio, of the Brass Monkey, said. On show were some of Australia’s most promising up-and-coming talent, who had the opportunity to play live in front of leading music industry professionals.

‘‘The scope of the talent was amazing,’’ Mr Trio said. The success of the music festival means it will ‘‘most definitely’’ be back next year, he added. ‘‘The feedback from all the venues was very positive. 90 per cent of venues came back straight away and said they want to be involved next year.’’ He thanked Sutherland Shire Council for its hard work and support, along with the many businesses of Cronulla who came on board. Fellow event organiser Jon Howell said a lot of connections were made. ‘‘One local band got booked for New Year’s as soon as soon as they started playing,’’ he said. ‘‘We had an incredible collection of delegates considering it was a first-time event. Delegates flew in from all states for the industry panel at Cronulla RSL Club. (http://www.theleader.com.au/story/3490046/budding-musos-gain-an-insightinto-the-business-at-cronulla-conference/) Industry luminaries attending included Bob Hunka from Los Angeles who worked for years at Sony Pictures and managed Dolly Parton’s music publishing company and Monument Records. Also attending was Andy McLean who started the North by Northeast musical festival in Canada and who now is head of the East Coast Music Association of Canada. Local talent scouts included Peter Noble, director of the Bluesfest in Byron Bay. ‘‘It was a great showcase for local bands,’’ Mr Howell said. Did you go to any of the events? There was fun for all during the recent Australian Music Week, three-day event in Sutherland Shire. There was also a more serious side with a conference which included a panel, masterclass and networking sessions at Cronulla RSL and lead by some of the most successful and influential people in the business. Topics included getting a start; what publicists, booking agents and publishers do, how to manage artists and self-management. Visitors could stroll about the many live gigs in cafes and venues around Cronulla and the finale, HiFi Days festival was a big hit with UB40 headlining.

HEIN COOPER RETURNS TO AUSTRALIA WITH NEW SINGLE ‘RUSTY’ & SHOWS! (http://imcmusic.net/wp-content/uploads/HeinLive2.jpg)

Last year Hein Cooper was busking. This year his stunning debut ‘The Art of Escape’ has been spinning on triple j, he’s headed off to find his muse in Canada, he’s had spins on the UK’s BBC radio, toured UK, Europe, Canada & USA and he’s put the finishing touches on his debut album set for an early 2016 release. The first taste of the new album comes in the form of ‘Rusty’, a breezy summer slice of acoustic pop, perfect for kicking back and watching the world go by…. but with a deeper message for those who want to dig below the surface. Having spent much of 2015 in Canada where he recorded the forthcoming album with with producer Marcus Paquin (Arcade Fire, The National, The Local Natives, Hey Rosetta), Hein is heading back home for the holidays, playing a slew of amazing shows, kicking off with Australian Music Week and Mullum Festival, and winding through November and December to his triumphant appearance at Falls Festival, rounding out what has been an amazing year. Rusty came about while improvising over loops at a show in Sydney two years ago, with a killer riff emerging that Hein took and wrote the song over the top. “I often struggle with the state of the world and how society functions “I often struggle with the state of the world and how society functions in such a cold and divided way,” said Hein. “But what hurts me most is the way so many people seem to bury these feelings and glue a false sense of happiness to themselves rather than confront the way they actually feel. I’d rather be authentic http://imcmusic.net/2015/11/09/hein-cooper-returns-to-australia-with-new-single-rusty-shows/

in my sadness than false in my happiness. I based ‘Rusty’ on this idea. I found that creating a positive happy sound underneath melancholic lyrics captured this feeling because it represented the fight between me and the world’s obsession to be happy all the time. Kind of like the opposite of Coldplay’s technique in ‘Parachutes’ of writing positive lyrics with a melancholy sound.” Hein Cooper returns to Australia with his first shows in Sydney at the inaugural Australian Music Week Showcase followed by shows and festivals in Mullum, Brisbane, Sydney and Falls in Lorne & more. Here’s The Lineup For Australia’s Newest Industry Conference, Australian Music Week Like

Written by Emmy Mack on September 3, 2015 Watch out BIGSOUND, Australia’s got itself a brand new music industry summit and the inaugural lineup is a flippin’ doozy. The first ever Australian Music Week conference is scheduled to take place across Sydney’s The Shire this November, featuring 60 massive local acts spanning the entire genre-spectrum, including Lepers And Crooks, Ivan Ooze, Guards Of May, The Belligerents, Betty & Oswald, Tropical Zombie, WAXHEAD and more. The second wave of acts has also just been unveiled, adding the likes of Jenny Broke The Window, Chase The Sun, Drawcard, Mar Haze, Kristafor Farrenkothen, Lillye and stacks of others. Not to mention there’s also a monster list of industry speakers, almost as long as the artist lineup, which includes triple j’s Nick Findlay, UNFD’s Nick Yates, John Mullen from Dew Process, PledgeMusic’s Scot Crawford, Woodford Folk Festival’s Chloe Goodyear and so many others that between them there’s probably enough brainpower to fully charge the world’s entire stock of iPods. In addition to the second artist announcement, Aus Music Week have also launched a new music video project, called Captured. As The Music reports, the comp will see local bands and filmmakers team up to create a music video or short film, with the finished products to premiere as part of AMW. The winners will be announced on closing night, with a major prize from sponsors to be awarded to the champion. You can apply here, with entries closing at 5pm on Monday, 14th September. And that’s not all, AMW has also partnered with the Canadian Independent Music Association and East Coast Music Association, who’ll offer http://musicfeeds.com.au/news/heres-the-lineup-for-australias-newest-industry-conference-australian-music-week/

up two artists apiece for a showcase at the inaugural event. “We’re really excited by this opportunity,” AMW director Geoff Trio said in a statement. “By opening this opportunity for Canadian artists, we will aim to work on reciprocal deals for Australian acts in Canada and other international markets, which we hope will result in tour swaps and collaborations in writing, recordings etc.” The first annual Australian Music Week will run from November 18th – 22nd at venues across Cronulla. Lillye

If you’re a hard rock fan and you haven’t heard of Sydney rock outfit Lillye yet, put them on your radar. Last Friday I caught their set at Australian Music Week, and my ears instantly pricked up. The raw and powerful vocal delivery by front woman Virginia Lillye was nothing short of impressive. The band was tight and the metal vibe felt like being splashed in the face with a bucket of liquid nitrogen, so cool, so refreshing and I was wide awake despite almost fading in the 43 degree heat prior. My entrails were http://www.emergethemag.com/2015/11/25/hard-rockers-lillye-on-our-radar/

vibrating with the fuzzy rumble of melodic guitar riffs and heavy bass and my ears and eyes were bursting with joy. It was an arena-style performance. Here’s a little teaser of the gig:

And this is our fave track off the self-titled EP: LILLYE by LILLYÈ

The vibe was intimate and the crowd was fully engaged. Their merch stand dazzled with fairy lights encasing tees, CD’s an other goodness. The band even passed out Lillye branded guitar pick mementos. Could it get any better? If you’re looking to discover a hot rock outfit, go check out Lillye and you’ll totally get my exaltations.

The Australian Music Week has kicked off - big time - in Cronulla. There was music everywhere last night along the Mall, stretching from the performance stage at the north end to 2230 in south. The Cronulla businesses that decided to host musicians were loving it. One cafe owner said that Thursday night was usually a bit sad in the patronage stakes. With a constant flow of musicians last night, the place was packed.

Host venues Host venues through the Music Week are Brass Monkey, El Sol, Sting Bar, JD’s, the North and South Mall Stages, Croydon Lane and the Zinc Bar. Walking along the Mall, the most constant comment was: “Why can’t we have this every year?” It would be fair to say central Cronulla was right into it last night. Music choices ranged from the brilliant Latin Ministry firing up on a stage next to the old Commonwealth Bank, to the Marvell Brothers at Croydon Street, to buskers.

APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN (https://marcatoapp.com/forms/amw2015/artist_application/new?

&utm_source=Oztix&utm_medium=Website&utm_content=NewsItem&utm_campaign=AUMusicweek_n IT IS TIME FOR THE NEXT INCARNATION OF 'CAPTURED' Today, Heath Media and The Australian Music Week (AMW) have announced that they will be teaming up to present Captured: Australia. Captured: Australia is the third incarnation of the Captured music video project that pairs up local bands and musicians with local emerging filmmakers all through an open competition. The result of the pairing is, after 2 months of allocated production time, a music video or a short film under 5 minutes. These music videos and short films travel around the region for a series of events and are supplemented by an online campaign where the public votes on their favourite video. All bands that apply to AMW will be able to opt in for automatic consideration for Captured: Australia. Applications are now open for Australian Music Week http://australianmusicweek.com (http://australianmusicweek.com?

&utm_source=Oztix&utm_medium=Website&utm_content=NewsItem&utm_campaign=AUMusicweek_n With two past incarnations, the brand of Captured was seen by over 500,000 people internationally each year. The first, 'Captured: A Digital Spotlight on the Sydney Music Scene', took place during the 2011 Sydney Fringe Festival in conjunction with FBi Social. The winners of the public vote were local band Chicks Who Love Guns and filmmakers Good Cheer were awarded the prize from the panel of industry judges. The second edition, 'Captured 2.0' was held at the end of 2012. It expanded to include artists from greater NSW, seeing the films premiere at Harvest Festival in Sydney, crowning Doc Holliday Takes The Shotgun winners of the public vote and James Brettell, winner of the filmmakers award for his video for The Upskirts. For this third incarnation, the concept - which to now has only focused on NSW artists and filmmakers is going nationwide - will bring the quality of the national Australian industry to focus. The project will include a mixture of known and unknown artists as they continue to support local musicians, bands and filmmakers, while brokering new relationships and encouraging the creation and promotion of art in the community. Full details will be announced in August at the official website: http://www.capturedaustralia.com (http://www.capturedaustralia.com?

Vernas Keep William Crighton Last month the Australian Music Week (AMW) also announced that they would be teaming up with The AU Review to present Captured: Australia. Captured is a national music video project and competition that sees local bands and musicians paired up with local filmmakers. The result of the pairing is, after 6 to 7 weeks of allocated production time, a music video or a short film under 5 minutes. The films will premiere in 2015 as part of Australian Music Week in Sydney. These music videos and short films will then travel around the country for a series of events and are supplemented by an online campaign where the public vote on their favourite video. The winners are announced at a closing night party, with a major prize from sponsors being awarded to the band by way of the public vote, and for the filmmaker by way of a panel of industry judges. Entries close at 5pm on Monday, September 14th. Applications are now live for bands and filmmakers here.
