It is our vision to be a catalyst for projects that improve the quality of life for people who are least able to assist themselves.

Our mission is to create better health for all Australians through improved education and advancements in knowledge through medical research. We support excellence in research in an effort to provide both preventative and curative solutions for a broad range of health conditions.

Australian Rotary Health is one of the largest independent funders of mental health research within Australia. In addition to mental health research, we also provide funding into a broad range of general health areas, provide scholarships for rural medical and nursing students, as well as Indigenous health scholars. Australian Rotary Health has a broad vision to improve the health and wellbeing of all Australians.

Australian Rotary Health provides funding into areas of health that do not readily attract funding, and promotes findings to the community.

Mental Health Research Since the year 2000, Australian Rotary Health has focussed its funding on mental health research. In 2012 this focus narrowed to the ‘Mental Health of Young Australians’, and in 2013 research projects focussing on the ‘Prevention of Mental Health’ were included.

General Health Research Australian Rotary Health engages with a variety of funding partners to provide research PhD scholarships. These projects encompass a broad range of general health areas including cancer, heart disease, children’s health, motor neuron disease, diabetes and more.

Rural and Medical Nursing Scholarships Australian Rotary Health provides scholarships for medical and nursing scholars to undertake placements at a rural and remote health care service.

Scholars experience what these facilities have to offer and provide an incentive to pursue a career in rural Australia upon graduation.

Indigenous Health Scholarships These scholarships support Indigenous scholars to undertake tertiary training in nursing, physiotherapy, psychology, dentistry and other health related degrees at university. These scholarships help to overcome barriers to tertiary study and qualification.

Australian Rotary Health was established as a charitable fund in 1981 by Rotarian PP Ian Scott and the Rotary Club of Mornington, Victoria, to research the mystery of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

Gaining acceptance from District 982 (now D9820) for the project, the Rotary Club of Mornington discussed their vision at the Regional Rotary Institute in front of the current and past RI officers. A Steering Committee was appointed to develop the fund and each Australian District accepted the concept.

With the generous support of Rotarians, Rotary Clubs and Rotary Districts, Australian Rotary Health has funded over $48 million in research.

Australian Rotary Health has since welcomed individual, commercial and government supporters.

Australian Rotary Health offers four fellowships to early career researchers in the area of mental illness prevention. These are named after the first four chairman of Australian Rotary Health.

53 Funding Partner PhD Scholarships (up to $30,000 pa) Jointly funded by a Rotary Club or District, Australian Rotary Health and a University, for research into any health area.

1 Rural Medical Scholarships ($5,000 pa) Provide incentives for students to complete at least one year of medical placements in a rural area.

7 Rural Nursing Scholarships ($12,500 pa) $50,000 Provides an incentive to complete their 3rd year major clinical placement and graduating year in a rural or remote area.

These scholarships are a partnership between a Rotary Club or District and the State or Commonwealth government to provide scholarships for Indigenous Australians.

Membership of Australian Rotary Health entitles Members to attend the Annual General Meeting, which is generally hosted at the Zone 8 Institute.

The administration of Australian Rotary Health is conduced from Parramatta, NSW. Costs are minimal due to the high level of honorary service rendered by members of the Board and supporters at the District level.

The success of Australian Rotary Health in each Australian Rotary District is directly related to the quality and enthusiasm of our District Representatives and associated Committees.

Many areas of research are tragically underfunded in Australia.

Donations provide an invaluable income stream that help Australian Rotary Health fund vital research, education and awareness programs throughout the country. We rely on donations from individuals, Rotarians, Rotary Clubs and Districts, corporations and trusts to continue this work.

The workplace giving program operates through an employer’s payroll system and provides employees with a tax effective and simple way to donate regularly to Australian Rotary Health.

Workplace giving programs also help employers foster community-business partnerships and encourage a higher level of employee morale within their organisation.

Making a will is important at any stage of your life. It ensures that when you pass away, your estate will be handled the way you planned. Furthermore, making a will ensures that your assets will go to the people you choose, giving you peace of mind that your affairs are in order.

Including a bequest in your will is also one of the easiest ways to continue supporting your community after your death. By bequeathing to your favourite charity you can also from having access to your funds or property during your lifetime, resulting in less strain on you and your family.

Research Companions are PhD Scholarships named after their donors. They play a vital role in helping shape the future of Australia’s medical landscape and contribute to a healthier future for Australians.

Research Companions (donors) are able to choose a specific area of research to fund. The scholarship is then awarded to a PhD student completing research in that nominated

Lift the Lid on Mental Illness October 10, 2020 Lift the Lid on Mental Illness is Australian Rotary Health’s national fundraising campaign to raise money for mental health research.

100% of proceeds go to funding research into helping those affected by depression, anxiety, schizophrenia and many other illnesses.

On World Mental Health Day in October 2019, a number of businesses, individuals, and Rotary Clubs got involved in Lift the Lid around Australia. They did this by hosting Hat Day events, collecting donations at train stations and local cafes, and setting up awareness tables at Bunnings Warehouse stores.

Ride to Conference 2020—Rotary District 9790 “The Four Rivers Ride” March 14-19, 2020 Rotary District 9790 is raising money for Australian Rotary Health research again in 2020, at their Ride to Conference "The Four Rivers Ride" on 14-19 March. The 557km route is from Albury to Albury via Lake Hume Resort, Tallangatta, Bright and Beechworth, averaging 92km per day.

2020 Ride for Medical Research —Rotary District 9810 March 15-20, 2020 The 2020 Ride for Medical Research is Rotary District 9810’s 34th annual bike ride in support of Australian Rotary Health. This ride has contributed in excess of $1.1 million over the past 34 years to Australian Rotary Health research.

Melbourne Celtic Festival March 17, 2020 Melbourne Celtic Festival is a family friendly event and all ticket proceeds will be directed to Community Mental Health programs through Australian Rotary Health which will focus on the bushfire affected areas as well as supporting the important welfare work of Seafarer’s mission.

42nd AGFR Tournament April 19-24, 2020 Each year the Australian Golfing Fellowship of Rotarians meets in an Australian town or city for a week of golf. This year, profits from the Golf Tournament will be donated to Australian Rotary Health in support of mental health research.

Rotary Rides Canberra Five Peaks Challenge April 26, 2020 Woden Rotary Club are supporting Australian Rotary Health again this year as they take on the five peaks (and a bonus sixth peak) of Canberra on their bicycles. More information: www.rotaryrides.org.au

Adopt a Scientist ‘Adopt a Scientist’ is a campaign initiative of ‘Lift The Lid on Mental Illness.’

Supporters will have the opportunity to become a ‘friend’ of the mental health research ARH funds that are donated through Universities, other institutions and among independent researchers. They can make a one-off adoption contribution or can choose to support research on a monthly basis.

Adopting a Scientist is more than a ‘donation’. It is playing an active part in important scientific research that makes a contribution to advancing our understanding of how the world works and how our minds work within it.

National health symposiums have been hosted by Australian Rotary Health over the years. Previous Symposiums have focused on Cot Death, Muscular Dystrophy, Health of the Ageing, Adolescent Health, Family Health and Mental Health.

The latest Symposium was held in May 2013 titled “Prevention of Mental Disorders across the Lifespan: Setting New Directions for Research and Implementation”. This Symposium brought together 25 of Australia’s leading mental health professionals working in “prevention”.

Outcomes from this symposium have included the establishment of The Alliance For the Prevention of Mental Disorders, the introduction of community health forums, run by Australian Rotary Health in partnership with Rotary Clubs, which will inform Australians of what they can do to prevent mental disorders, and the commitment of new funding for further research into mental health prevention.

Australian Rotary Health engages in a number of promotional activities throughout the year in an effort to raise awareness for the need for health research and educational funding.

Newsletters Produced twice a year - in spring and autumn - newsletters inform readers about our current activities and are used to encourage clubs and individuals to contribute to Australian Rotary Health.

E-newsletters are also sent out on a fortnightly basis. To sign up to receive newsletters, contact our office.

Rotary Down Under Features Australian Rotary Health publishes a bi-annual four page spread in the Rotary Down Under magazine. These features appear in the December/ January and the May issues of RDU. Speakers at Club Meetings District Representatives or members of their committee aim to visit every Rotary Club to provide updates on current Australian Rotary Health initiatives.

Promotional Brochures Full colour brochures that can be used at both club level and for the general public are available for promotion and distributing information.

District Conferences Australian Rotary Health Directors, District Representatives and ARH staff can arrange an excellent district conference segment for your club, including a keynote speaker or report session with our DVD, the Perpetual Trophy presentation and more.

Special Club Awards Where clubs have reached contributions of $250, $500, $1,000, $1,500 and $2,000, then increments of $1,000 per member, an Australian Rotary Health Director or District Representative can present a certificate of appreciation at an important function such as a District Conference, club anniversary, or similar.

ABOUT US Australian Rotary Health “Medal” The Board of Australian Rotary Health awards an annual ‘Medal’ to an individual who has made a contribution of outstanding service to Australian Rotary Health. The Medal is the second highest award of meritorious service, after Life Membership (which ARH bestows), and is awarded annually. Recipients are presented with a framed cer and commemorative pin.

FACTS BOOKLET 2020 Dick White District Achievement Award This Award is bestowed in honour of Past Australian Rotary Health Director, PDG Dick White, who dedicated a long service to Australian Rotary Health, including his tireless efforts as Chairman of the Rotary Health Safari and the Great Australian Bike Ride.

Selection is made by the Executive Committee of ARH, in conjunction with Dick White or his representative. Criteria includes the hosting of a major promotional event, a significant increase in donations, a significant increase in Friends of ARH or other major contribution.

Past Recipients 2010: District 9810 (VIC), for their annual bike ride to District Conference.

2011: District 9680 (NSW), for their financial contribution to Australian Rotary Health, particularly during 2011.

2012: District 9550 (QLD) for their major annual fundraising event, Banish the Black Dog Ride.

2013: District 9830 (TAS) for initiatives including Sally’s Ride, the Ulverstone Health Expo and their many Funding Partner PhD Scholarships.

2014: District 9675 (NSW) for introducing the ARH Golden Microscope Award and support for Indigenous Health Scholarships and Funding Partner PhD Scholarships.

2015: District 9650 (NSW) to acknowledge the support of District Governors and, in particular, their partners for naming ARH as the “Partner Project” in each consecutive year from 2011/12 to 2015/16 and before that in 2008/2009 and 2006/2007.

2016: District 9810 (VIC) to acknowledge the support of Rotarians in this district and, in particular, raising $1 million over the past 30 years through their annual 5-day bicycle ‘Ride to District Conference’ event.

2017: District 9830 (TAS) for their role in increasing awareness of Australian Rotary Health by introducing several Funding Partner PhD Scholarships and by hosting annual health expos.

2018: District 9570 (QLD) for their role in promoting mental health in their communities through forums and events.

2019: Districts 9450 and 9460 (WA) for supporting ARH in a variety of ways, including their joint ARH Lift the Lid on Mental Illness annual forum.

ABOUT US Australian Rotary Health Mental Health Impact Award (Previously the Knowledge Dissemination Award) Australian Rotary Health sponsors an annual award for knowledge dissemination through the Society for Mental Health Research (SMHR).

The award is given to a person who has shown outstanding service in the promotion of evidence-based interventions, implementing them into practice or making the public more aware of their existence.

Research has produced a large body of evidence-based knowledge about effective treatments. However, many who would benefit from these treatments are often unable to access them as they are not made routinely available. Open to all clinicians, researchers, consumers and organisations, the awardee is given a plaque and expenses of attending and presenting their research at the annual SMHR meeting. The winner is available to address Rotary meetings in the 12 months after accepting the award.

Mental Health Since 2000, Australian Rotary Health has directed the bulk of its funding towards mental health research. In 2010 we specified this focus to the Mental Health of Young Australians aged 0-25 years. In 2013 this also included the prevention of mental disorders.

Prevalence and Stigma Almost 50% of Australians will experience a mental disorder during their lifetime. This includes depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, eating disorders, and more.

The annual cost of mental illness in Australia has been estimated at $20 billion, which includes the cost of lost productivity and labour force participation.

Mental illness is the leading cause of sickness absence and long-term work incapacity.

The Funding Gap According to the World Health Organisation, one of the most significant barriers to improving mental health treatments is the small focus of mental health in the public health agenda and the implications for funding.

Research funding largely depends on government or private funding which can be easily affected by political policy and the economic climate. Therefore, Australian Rotary Health established a permanent “fund� to offer funding for research on a reliable basis.

Australian Rotary Health is dedicated to continuing worthwhile contributions to community health in Australia. Through research, education and awareness, we hope to reduce the myths, misunderstandings, negative attitudes and stereotypes of mental illness that result in stigma, isolation and discrimination.

Success So Far Australian researchers have played a crucial role in appraising and transferring new technology from overseas for the benefit of all Australians. They have found successful cures, treatments and preventative therapies which have improved the lives of many, both locally and around the world.

The success of funding from Australian Rotary Health is attributed to the donations it receives from generous supporters, particularly Rotarians and Rotary clubs in Australia.

Applications for all mental health funding opportunities are advertised in the Australian Medical Journal each year, and notified to all Australian universities and other research institutions.

Mental Health Research Project Grants Since 2000, Australian Rotary Health has provided funding into Mental Illness through research project grants. In 2012 the focus narrowed to the Mental Health of Young Australians. Grants are currently awarded to projects up to $70,000 per annum.

Projects can be three years in duration but funding must be renewed each year after a progress report has been provided. Each project goes through an intensive review process with progress for the first year being a major consideration for renewal for the second and third years.

All grants are assessed by the Research Committee at an annual meeting, currently held in October.

Mental Health Postdoctoral Fellowships Since 2013, these projects now focus solely on the Prevention of Mental Health Disorders. Up to four Postdoctoral Fellowships are offered at various times – the Royce Abbey Fellowship, the Geoffrey Betts Fellowship, the Colin Dodds Fellowship and the Bruce Edwards Fellowship. These fellowships are for three years and are currently valued at $75,000 per year. Again, progress reports must be provided to ensure continuing funding.

Fellowship applicants will undergo an interview and selection process by various members of the Research Committee, at the annual meeting.

Mental Health PhD Scholarships Australian Rotary Health offers Ian Scott PhD Scholarships in the area of mental health, named after the founder of Australian Rotary Health.

The scholarships are for three years and are currently valued up to $30,000 per year and paid as a tax-free stipend. In special circumstances, the scholarship can be extended to 3.5 years. Progress reports must be provided. Applicants undergo an interview by members of the Research Committee in November.

General Health Funding Partner PhD Scholarships The Funding Partner PhD Scholarship program was introduced in 2004 to enable Rotarians the opportunity to support research in their chosen health area. It involves a 3.5 year commitment to a donation, from the Rotary partner. All Funding Partner PhD Scholarships also include a contribution from the university at which the successful applicant conducts their research.

The co-contribution for funding is: Rotary Partner University Australian Rotary Health

$12,000 per year $11,000 per year $7,000 per year

All Funding Partner PhD Scholarships are managed by Australian Rotary Health and are advertised directly to universities and research institutions in the geographical area nominated by the Rotary Partner. The Rotary Partner selects the area of health – which must be kept relatively broad to enable a competitive selection.

All applications are assessed, with the final selection made by Australian Rotary Health.

National Scholarships in Veterans PTSD On ANZAC Day 2015, Australian Rotary Health announced its PhD Scholarship initiative the ‘Australian Rotary Health PhD Scholarship— Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in Service Personnel and their Families.’

The inaugural PTSD PhD Scholarship was awarded to Kristin Graham at the Centre for Traumatic Stress Studies, University of Adelaide.

Kristin was investigating the link between common physical health symptoms and the development of mental illness.

District Scholarship: PTSD in Emergency Service Workers In October 2015, ARH announced co-funding with District 9675 for a Funding Partner PhD Scholarship researching PTSD in Emergency Services. Research will look at in-depth ways workers experience PTSD and aim to alleviate the mental health burden on our Emergency Services.

District Scholarship: PTSD in Military Veterans In 2019, a new scholarship was awarded, funded jointly

by District 9790 and the RSL. The first project will study Psychological and Behavioural features of children of Veterans.

This scholarship was awarded to Clinical and Counselling Psychologist Katrina Streatfeild.

GENERAL AND MENTAL HEALTH RESEARCH FUNDING

The year 2000 was the first time Australian Rotary Health provided grants to researchers to study a board variety of mental health areas. Australian Rotary Health was one of the first organisations to fund this kind of research and awarded grants annually for a one, two or three year period. This continued until 2012, where the focus switched to the mental health of young Australians, which remains a strong focus today.

In 2010, Australian Rotary Health funded 10 pilot research projects, which focussed on the mental health of young Australians aged up to 17 years.

Most projects went on to receive further funding from government funding bodies.

From 2004 to 2010, Rotary Clubs, Rotary Districts, and other funding partners had the opportunity to contribute to ‘Funding Partner Research Grants’ in a nominated health research area. During this period, 32 Funding Partner Research Grants were awarded, until the program focussed on supporting PhD Scholarships.

Mental health services require frequent evaluation to ensure their treatment programs remain relevant and effective. From 2007 to 2010, Australian Rotary Health provided 20 Grants so research teams could evaluate these services in both rural and urban settings.

This 3 year program was a means of funding service evaluations to assess the effectiveness of rural health systems and improve services.

A total of 5 projects were funded by Australian Rotary Health from 2007 to 2010.

Australian Rotary Health has on occasion partnered with a number of funding organisations for collaborative research projects.

The most recent special research grant was the ‘Beyond Bushfires: Community Resilience and Recovery Study’ led by the University of Melbourne between 2011 and 2013.

Indigenous Australians are faced with challenges across a range of socio-economic measures which can impact the health and wellbeing of Indigenous populations, both in a rural and urban setting.

Through Indigenous Health Scholarships, Australian Rotary Health is supporting the next generation of Indigenous health care providers to achieve an education that will help them assist their communities. Each student enrolled in the program is provided with a $5,000 scholarship.

First established in 2002 by PP Geoff Bailey and the South Australian Rotary Club of Mitcham, the program has expanded to all States and Territories, supporting students in a range of health areas including nursing, social work, physiotherapy, psychology and dentistry.

The Indigenous Health Scholarship program is a collaborative project between Australian Rotary Health, participating Rotary Clubs, and the State and Commonwealth Governments. Administration costs are covered by the Commonwealth Government to assist in the ongoing success of this program.

Rural medical facilities face a number of challenges including staff shortages, lack of funding and large geographical service areas. Since 2007, Australian Rotary Health has run a Rural Medical Scholarship program.

Medical students are funded by a sponsoring Rotary Club or private donor to undertake a year-long rural placement and experience what these facilities have to offer. Rural Scholarships provide students with an opportunity to pursue a career in rural Australia when they graduate.

PROGRAMS

In response to the need for more nurses in rural and remote areas, Australian Rotary Health launched a Rural Nursing Scholarship program in 2007.

Using donations from Rotary Clubs and other donors, these scholarships are providing incentives for nursing students to complete their third year major clinical placement and graduating year in a rural or remote area. These scholarships also provide an incentive for nursing students to pursue a nursing career in rural or remote Australia upon graduation.
