hello & welcome To our online version of Australia’s Sweetest Morning Tea (ASMT) Virtual E-vent for 2014. ASMT was created in 2013 in conjunction with Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea to celebrate diversity and sweetness with meaning by empowering contributors to think differently and above all else to create awareness and raise funds for Cancer Research. In 2014, ASMT is once again a series of collaborative e-vents that come together to showcase some of the most talented sweet artisans within Australia. A theme was set and an interpretation was made and sweet beauty unfolded. Turning the following pages we know you will be transported from one beautiful e-vent to the next and become inspired by the ideas and heartfelt inspiration that each contributors e-vent has created. We hope you enjoy and get a lot of inspiration from this online edition. Shortly this magazine will be available to purchase as a hard copy magazine meaning you can keep it forever and indulge whenever you choose. colour & design inspiration Darlings Details is once again delighted to be involved in Australia’s Sweetest Morning Tea E-vent in 2014. This year Monique from Darling Details has found inspiration from the words of Leonardo da Vinci,

“ S I M P L I C I T Y I S T H E U LT I M AT E S O P H I S T I C AT I O N ” As described by Monique, “Who can argue with Leonardo da Vinci?, one of the greatest artists of all time. This famous quote highlights the ‘less is more’ philosophy, although don’t be misled the ‘less’ is made up of unparalleled quality. Sometimes we can over think and over style the most beautiful forms of art. My vision for this concept was that each contributor was inspired to bring back simplicity and uncomplicated design by focusing on the natural form and art of one’s style. I encouraged contributors to use clean lines and structure together with inspiration from art, architecture, fashion, sculpture and music. By using the same mood board and colour palette each contributor was encouraged to create their own form of “simple sophistication”. The colour palette for Australia’s Sweetest Morning Tea 2014 consisted of a blend of steel blue, grey, black, white, copper and bronze. The colour palette this year is a little more masculine and plays homage to our “simplicity” focus.

behind the scenes SWEET BAKES My morning tea is titled Behind the Scenes, and is dedicated to my grandpa who I lost to Prostate Cancer in September of last year. My ‘Papa’ was one of Australia’s first television camera operators, which inspired the theme and styling of my event. The warehouse space was transformed into a working television studio for the day, complete with lights & cameras. However the star of the show is the dessert table. Alisha chose to work with black, white, grey & steel blue. The black, white & grey were chosen to reflect the simplicity of early television, which was broadcast in black & white. The steel blue was added to lift elements of the desserts from the background, as well as match the old steel blue film reels that were used for recording. Two different metal textures were the inspiration. The first being the embossed impressions found in the metals of television equipment. Even a single colour can be so intriguing when it is embossed. This inspired the texture in some of the cakes & cookies. Alisha was also inspired by smooth, reflective metal surfaces and the sheen it created when it reflected light. Rather than a set bustling with people and busy scenery, Alisha focused on keeping the attention on the dessert table and the masculine colour palette that was chosen. She designed all desserts to appear simple and sophisticated from afar, but when viewed closely they reveal intriguing details. Inspiration was drawn from many elements of television production, the first being the old lighting equipment. These became the perfect clean line backdrop and set the mood for the whole event. The 3 tiered cake was inspired by television pixels, recreated with clean hexagon shapes in black, white & grey. The hexagon pattern became a motif carried through a number of the desserts. Alisha created a dessert table that when viewed as a whole was not too overcomplicated, but also one where desserts could shine on their own when observed individually. Take a look through the lens, and enjoy the sweetness on set! Don’t restrict yourself to displaying cakes on stands. Create something unique by placing your cake on a crate, a candlestick, a book…the possibilities are endless!

Mono tones of black, white and shades of grey were used for the biscuit set. By limiting herself to a monochromatic palette, Julia ensured that it was the piping and the texture of the royal icing on the biscuit that told the story and not the colour. The inspiration behind this was a number of black and white photographs that Julia has on her own living room wall. The effect of the black and white photographs is quite striking particularly when positioned on a plain white wall with no distraction. Julia wanted to try and create a similar effect with biscuits. It was the lines and the structure of architecture and furniture that became the main inspiration. The architectural and structural elements strongly influenced the biscuit set and Julia and her photographer Emma incorporated 60s style furniture with a timber focus into the shoot to bring warmth into the e-vent. There were a number of things that inspired the shoot. Black and white photography was a major inspiration. This inspired both the creation of the biscuit set and the mounting of the biscuits on the wall in black and white frames with simple, 60s style furnishing. The second major inspiration for the biscuit set was Melbourne. Julia wanted to create a set of biscuits that reflected different aspects of Melbourne. To try and reflect Melbourne in icing was not the easiest thing. However Julia used the weekend newspaper, conversations with family, her knowledge of the city and different photographs of Melbourne to come up with scenes reflecting Melbourne architecture, art, landmarks, sport, fashion and idiosyncrasies. Juliaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s decision to keep the set uncomplicated is genius! With a few simplistic representations, she was able to bring some fun to the concept while still making the set instantly recognisable to those who call Melbourne home. Some of the biscuits are quite simply piped, made from line drawings and silhouettes. However others such as the Shrine of Remembrance were much more complicated and took a number of days and stages to put together. This allowed a variety of techniques to be used. 12

Leigha was drawn to the colour tones of black, grey and green and her shoot theme was perfect for this palette. Leigha’s shoot focuses on regeneration, renewal and regrowth and above all, hope. She lives in Winmalee in the lower Blue Mountains of NSW. In October last year, Winmalee was devastated by bushfire with over 200 homes lost and many families affected. This shoot is dedicated to her area and to showcase the beautiful township that she lives in. The bushfire left trees blackened, but with the magic of nature, soon grass and flora sprouted through the blackened soil to start anew. This became the focus of the colour palette. Set in the bush, stunning rock formations and their earthy textures became the backdrop to showcase Leigha’s macarons. Luscious naked cakes and macaron towers with clean sharp lines worked cohesively together in this natural setting. Leigha added soft details with the addition of lace work on her macarons which also gave an illusion of depth. Leigha’s use of non-traditional serving ware is perfect for her natural setting. Instead of cake stands, chopping boards were used and a mini deep fryer basket was given a new life as a vase.

lines of architecture CRUMBS OF COMFORT CAKE DESIGN Gillian was inspired by modern Australian architecture, in particular, Kurilpa Bridge. It is the world’s largest hybrid tensegrity bridge and connects Kurilpa Point on Brisbane’s South Bank to the heart of Brisbane’s business district. Kurilpa Point, known as the “place of the water rat”, was named by the Turrbal people who first inhabited the area. It was considered in Brisbane’s history to be a meeting place for indigenous tribes and a crossing point before the Brisbane River was bridged. The colour palette chosen by Gillian depicts the white, steel and concrete structure of the bridge against the steely blue backdrop of the city structures. The edible copperleaf represents the Brisbane River. At certain times of the day, the sunlight reflects off the river giving off beautiful shimmery copper hues. To further symbolize cancer and the journey it takes, the bridge took on another meaning. Although the Bridge has a look of fragility, its design is based on the principle of tensegrity (depicted in the cookie), making the structure incredibly strong. Courage and strength is needed during the cancer journey. The strength shown by my late Aunt Filippa as she battled terminal cancer for 5 years was simply incredible. Despite her fragile state, she remained strong. She lost her battle at 50 years old. “The human spirit is stronger than anything that can happen to it”. C.C Scott ASMT 2014

art deco sophistication TOO CUTE TO CUT

From the time Danielle was very young she spent a lot of time at her grandparents house with her Nan. One of her favourite memories is watching old black and white movies on the ‘The Midday Movie’. She was enamoured by how glamorous the actors were, even with the most simplest of lines in their costumes, and the sets were always stunning. So in a tribute to her Nan, and Danielle’s cherished memories, her concept of these special times and her memories, brought that era to life. Danielle chose to use black and white as her primary colour palette, as to her they embody the Simplicity & Sophistication brief. Copper was brought into the mix to add warmth to the palette and at the same time be consistent with the chosen concept of Art Deco, without using the obvious choice of gold. For the textural elements, hand painted copper luster was used to give a luxurious feel, and each cake was defined with a glossy black to distinguish between the different elements of the cakes as well as giving a physical difference in texture. Simple shapes (triangles & rectangles) were used to create the designs in keeping with the ‘Simplicity’ element of the brief. Danielle then chose to layer each element to give depth to each of the designs. In choosing the location for the photoshoot,’Playroom’ was the perfect venue with the feature white wood panel textured wall, the gloss of the aged floorboards and also the rustic whitewashed brick walls. The monochromatic colour palette chosen by Danielle are the defining components of the Art Deco period. Not in the gilded look of the Gatsby era, but more the streamlined, simple sophistication of the 1930’s-40’s era. Inspiration for the cakes came from the sets of movies and Interior design of the chosen period. Another key inspiration was flowers. Danielle’s Nan was the main inspiration for her use of flowers as she was a keen gardener and was known for the amazing roses that lined the front boundary of her house. “So, thank you Nan, for my love of black and white movies and musicals, of classic style, and for having me by your side in the kitchen and giving me my love of baking that has become my passion.” Danielle

In deciding on her colour palette, Lynette wanted to lean towards more masculine tones and use inspiration from building materials such as steel, stone, brick & wood. Using the theme “simple sophistication” and our inspiration of the sculpture of where the photo shoot was taken, Lynette tried to imagine what design elements one would find inside the “Hotel” sculpture. From quilted cushions, to ornate ceilings and decorative mouldings, her interpretation of the inside would be described as ‘Industrial Vintage”. The perfect location was found at the Hotel on Eastlink. The Hotel, (which has NO VACANCY) is not really a Hotel but was created by Callum Morton and is a 20 metre high sculpture. Callum said “motorists will view it from the car as an actual hotel”. The Hotel is made from concrete, steel and glass and is situated between Greens Road & Bangholme Road, Dandenong South in Melbourne, Victoria. It has solar panels on the windows, so if you’re driving past at night, it will light up and you will think it’s real. The Hotel oozes clean lines and structure together with inspiration from art, architecture, sculpture and fashion, which to us, is exactly what the concept of this year’s Australia’s Sweetest Morning Tea 2014 is all about. We couldn’t have come up with a better location for a morning tea then this Hotel, but the question really is “What’s inside The Hotel?” It’s simple and sophisticated if you don’t over think it!!! complementary contrasts HANGING PRETTY Inspired by Leonardo Di Vinci and his statement that “Simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication”, Helen and Michelle wanted their concept to be one of questioning what appears to be. Their aim was to create a styled table inspired by modern art sculptures. The purpose built backdrop is geometric in design and is a rendition of the Cancer Council ribbon. Hundreds of handmade fabric and paper flowers adorned the shape of this ribbon to bring attention to the cause it was representing. Shades of blue, black, copper and teal were used to portray a sense of masculinity in these cool tones. Architectural elements and textures used were concrete, glass, acrylic, and metallic surfaces. These elements were all complementary as well as contrasting. The perfect ying and yang. Michelle made hundreds of individually built black, navy, and blue bipyramid shapes, and then positioned larger copper pyramid shapes to draw attention to the desserts and cake elements. The dessert and cake elements were then positioned on mirrors atop acrylic cubes. The sculpture cake was designed to incorporate a number of textures and surfaces. The base of the cake was inspired by concrete blocks, and interest was added by creating texture and facets to the base. The use of geometric shapes helped to draw the eye upwards and these shapes were purposefully placed in a random manner to play on the light bouncing from the surface and create interest. The faceted diamond shape was perched on top. The geometric shapes hovering around the diamond added to the optical illusion. Between the cake and the background, Jen endeavoured to capture the entire spectrum of the colour palette. The cake includes the masculine grey tones, while the background demonstrates the warmer copper and earthy tones. The props used gave the whole concept a pop of blue to complete the shoot colour scheme. Texture was incorporated into the cake itself. A patterned bottom tier is coupled with a grosgrain ribbon and texture was added with the use of different sugar flowers. The use of the silver stand adds another facet and tone in the grey colour palette. The choice of location, the Onkaparinga Woollen Mill Museum, provides yet more texture and warmth with the looms and woollen mill machinery. These elements teamed with clean lines, were pinnacle for the masculine style concept, yet at the same time highlighting proud Australian history. The Onkaparinga Woollen Mill Museum in Lobethal, SA provided the perfect location to showcase some of Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s proud textile history while the warm tones of the machinery contrasted and complimented the masculine cool grey tones of the cake.

Karen chose to work in tones of copper and grey to portray a sense of softness and femininity to her concept. For this shoot, Karen wanted to show the harshness of the scrublands against the delicateness of tableware and to also show the contrast of an elegant picnic in rough terrain. Therefore in considering the use of texture in her design, she wanted to go beyond the usual flat and smooth finished cookies and add further interest with a 3D look. This was achieved by separating the image design onto a foundation cookie and then topping it with the floral accents. Karen was inspired by the crisp, clean forms of the Art Nouveau period, yet wanted to try and bring a softness and femininity to the design. Contrasting the strong lines of the stylized roses with the subtle tones of copper and grey, an uncomplicated image is given a much more delicate look. The desire of this shoot was to reflect that contrast while still capturing the elegance and luxury of that era. The harsh rural landscape paired with the ornate picnic setting is intended to portray a picture of simple sophistication. Decorating tip: To create dimension and interest, a 3D look can be achieved by separating the elements of an image and adding them as separate cookies. The petals and leaves from the roses have been taken and applied on top of a base cookie.

Nicci’s main inspiration for her part in the table came from the geometric inspiration for her cake. She fell in love with the work of fell in love with the work of Sandra Fettingis. Sandra mixes and layers materials such as wood, acrylic, styrene, paper and paint, and utilizes laser cutting for its precision. The mix of the materials and the precision through their formulated repetition and purposefully restrained color palettes was the perfect inspiration for the overall Australia’s Sweetest Morning Tea design scheme.

Lisa’s main inspiration was the work of Marsha Golemac, a Melbourne based creative specialising in styling and installations. Lisa fell in love with one of her pieces and wanted to recreate this into cake. The stacking of repetitive cubes by Lisa is effective and a very modern adaptation of geometric design. This same repetition was carried on through the cookies and cupcakes.

Karen chose the colour palette of light green, copper, grey and black. The simplicity of these colours and how well they worked together was what she loved the most. With Karen’s strength being clean cut lines in cake design, she drew inspiration from architecture and fashion - namely jewelry. These elements allow a third dimension to cake design that brings the cake to vivid life. Karen fell in love with the industrial style home of her photographer. It is sophisticated and modern and made the perfect backdrop for the look she wanted to portray for her cakes. The simplicity of the décor teamed with the polished concrete worked perfectly to showcase the cakes. The spacious interior turned them into pieces of art. As well as focusing on straight architectural lines, inspiration was taken from pieces of jewelry that Karen remembers her mother having as a child. Karen’s mother has battled Melanoma in previous years, so this interpretation was of particular personal inspiration to her.

Taryn and Kate’s colour palette consisted of a deep blue, silver, and a contrasting ‘pop’ of green amongst more neutral and monochromatic tones. They wanted to combine a modern and sophisticated colour scheme with the simple colours of the rustic background they chose for their morning tea. Textural elements were very much a combination of ‘new & old’ or ‘rustic & modern’. In knowing that Australia’s Sweetest Morning Tea is to raise awareness for cancer research, they wanted to focus on an event that revolved around the celebration of life and love. As such, the photo shoot focuses on a young couple’s engagement party. They wanted to show an intimate moment between the couple, where the young man gives his sweetheart a handwritten love letter full of sweet nothings about beginning this new adventure of their lives together. A geometric theme was chosen for the couple that allowed for a use of origami shapes in the table settings rather than the typical flowers. This made the setting much more comfortable and approachable for our husband-to-be. The shoot focused on simple and handmade details, but also combined a theme of ‘old & new’ to really include the couple and their personalities as well as two very different lives coming together as one. The desserts were designed to be very modern & sophisticated with sleek, clean lines to contrast against the rustic backdrop. Three very different cakes were created that ran along the same theme, with repeating colour schemes, ‘out there’ shapes, and clean lines, pulling inspiration from modern architecture, and geometric shapes.

the illusion of glass S U T S A PAT I S S E R I E Blue, Green, Grey, Brown Amanda also loves these colours and also loves the subtle blends within their range. She wanted to show a cheerful side to what people usually think of these usually dull colour tones. Amanda wanted to add the illusion of glass structures to cakes and she wanted to try to imitate glass to show different variations. Her inspiration came from architecture and art of todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s society. Glass brings a sophisticated edge to many modern structural components in art or construction. It is delicate but solid; translucent but reflective. Glass has many forms of textural elements to play with, whether it is glossy or frosted. The appearance of glass has always been a heady attraction. It can be portrayed as classy or bubbly. For this occasion, Amanda wanted to bring a fun, happy and abstract creation with the glass element. It was very tricky, difficult and time consuming! After many attempts the outcome bought a lustrous look to the table.

strength & fragility R E D WA G O N E V E N T S Amandaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s submission features many variations of weathered grays, silvers and blues, with a mix of copper and bronze metallics and stark whites. These colours reflect strongly in the design of Federation Square in Melbourne, a true iconic feature in Australian modern architecture. The silvers and greys represent the concrete and steel that provide strength to the building along with the bronze and copper colouring of the sandstone paneling that feature throughout. The subtle blues highlight the geometric glass paneling. The stark whites in the geometric lines of the kangaroo represent the newness of the design, a modern approach in design. Taking Federation Square and the geometric kangaroo design as her inspiration Amanda really wanted to provide a link between strength and fragility in her design. Similar to what is faced by millions of people and their families each year as they are faced with the uncertainty of a cancer diagnosis. The concrete and steel elements were used to represent their use in modern Australian architecture. The glass used in the cake stands represents both the geometric glass paneling of Federation Square. In 1999, Amanda lost her beautiful Nana, Ena Brash, to ovarian cancer. From diagnosis to her passing, it was a horribly quick 3 weeks. Ena was only 69 years old. She loved life, her children and her grandchildren. Sadly she never got to meet her great grandchildren. This E-vent is created in her memory. A baron concrete warehouse formed the perfect backdrop this E-vent. Modern, crisp and strong in its nature, it highlighted the modern design of both the dessert table and table setting. The triangular and geometric panels of the Federation Square complex were replicated in both food design and also through the bold geometric linage of the kangaroo face on the backdrop for the dessert table. The desserts were all kept clean and modern with strong crisp geometric elements left to complement the bold backdrop. The use of concrete pavers and planters accentuated the concrete surrounds and also tied the connection to both modern Australian architecture with its clean and strong lines and also modern art. Concrete blocks can be used as an inexpensive alternative to floral vases or vessels. Picked up from your local brick supplier for only a few dollars they can be filled with flowers, plants or succulents to create striking yet modern and bold table arrangements.

Black, white, grey and bronze. Lauren chose these monochromatic tones as she felt her design needed to only use a few colours to get the modern and textured effect needed. The mainly grey design echoed the concrete that is generally the floor and walls of every skate park. With the perfect use of a few elements that work so well together, Lauren covered the perfect modern cake. The studded texture on the third tier represents the music fashion that she loves (metal and grunge). On the very top of the cake is a heart with bling headphones. The representation behind this is â&#x20AC;&#x153;Music is a piece of art that goes in the ears and straight to the heart.â&#x20AC;? This cake shoot has been inspired by skate park art and architecture, along with grunge and metal music fashion. It is also a symbolic representation of who Lauren is and the design she loves. What more perfect way to convey the feeling of this cake than to bring it outdoors and feature some local graffiti art behind it. Lauren found the perfect location at her local skate park in Cumberland Park. 72

bronze lights SWEET DISPOSITION CAKES Lisa wanted to use darker and more masculine colours. She loves the complementary nature of using these colour tones together. Darker materials were used for the background teamed with green antique glass on the table and most of the other elements were left neutral. Lisa made a deliberate and masterful choice to do a table where the colours were strong and masculine but still had a feminine side without being ‘flowery’. The colours are reminiscent of winter with the dark and warm tones. Lisa’s sweet mind came to the fore when she envisioned bronze pear statues. She loves the curvy shape of pears, which is very feminine and contrasts beautifully with the masculine bronze colours. The bronze colour also gives the pears a stronger look. The cake was designed around the floral painted tier. The rose is from a painting by Jo Beer. Lisa is an avid fan of her floral oil paintings! When designing the sweet table, Lisa chose desserts that she has always loved. Profiteroles that her mum made (but were then called cream puffs), cheese cake (Lisa’s own favourite cake to eat), a childhood favourite chocolate hazelnut slice that Lisa made as a child in her mum’s kitchen. Chocolate and salted butter caramel macarons are Lisa’s own family’s favourite. Finally, back to the pears. They were macerated in a syrup flavoured with cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. Lisa successfully pulled together in perfect harmony masculine colour tones and feminine yet strong dessert table styling. ASMT 2014

Art and the creative side of sugar was where the inspiration took Jacki in her concept. Jacki wanted to show a 3D nature to sugar without using modern science, but with traditional fondant work. Sugar comes in many mediums and by using a few different techniques and bringing them together in simple and modern ways, cake turned into modern and interpretative art. To set the tone for this concept, a white gallery space was needed. The cakes became the sculptural gallery pieces and they were allowed to shine in a pared back environment. By turning cake into art, Jacki wanted to confuse the eye and question the mind to what it is actually seeing. The colour palette of shades of blue paired with crisp white allowed details to shine. The colours highlighted the depth of dimension given to every cake structure. Colour was added with piping, through gradients of fondant, via subtle hues of airbrushing and also through the addition of translucent and fragile gelatin. Cakes were constructed using different structures and using different textures. Fondant was layered and shaped and tessellated together. It was also textured to look like concrete and ruffled in ways to look as if it floated on air. Royal icing provided dimension and depth as well as pops of colour. Gelatin was formed into spheres and made into lace. To fully bring the cake art to gallery life, acrylic cake structures were custom made to fully accentuate the modern cake forms. Clean, crisp and detailed imagery brought every vignette of this cake display into the world of the gallery exhibition. Welcome to a sweet exhibition where Cake is Art. Art is Cake.

With Anna’s love for the beach, she wanted to try and convey the feeling of the beach and simplicity of nature at its best. The brushed bottom tier in blue and green with clean lines was designed to portray the feeling of the smooth clear water. The top tier features pleating and the soft, rounded finish to each pleat represents the billowing clouds in the sky above and the rolling waves as they crash on the beach. The structural peaks represent the clay cliffs at the end of the beach and how they are such a contrast to the soft sand. Choosing bold blue, green and bronze is reminiscent of the beach with clear water and a stark contrast of the red clay cliffs in the background. Anna loves going down onto that beach with her kids and often just to take a walk along the foreshore. Anna also continued the blue with bronze peaks on cupcakes with blue buttercream in silver cases. This was made as a little tribute to all those who have been touched by cancer with a little bit of “HOPE” keeping in the same tone as the main cake with brushed blue and green tiers. Blue and green macarons complete the table!

Masculine dark tones of black, brown, grey and navy. These colours create the contemporary ambience which complements the rusty, modern, sleek look that Kerry envisaged. Black was used to emphasize as well as by making bold statements. Black is strong and infinite yet at the same time simple. The use of gold represents a hint of luxury and sophistication. The main inspiration for Kerry’s concept is modern, nature and fashion. Nature is represented through the fence and table to emphasize the wood texture and grains. The plant that was hung from the ceiling and the flowers illustrate a closer connection to nature itself. Styling was kept to a minimum, with mainly black colours used and strikes of boldness added with gold accessories. The shoot took place amongst modern buildings, with a view to juxtapose modern looking cakes with modern textural elements. Mother Nature meets modern style and fashion. Kerry was inspired by the quote “simplicity is the ultimate sophistication” by Leonardo Da Vinci. Kerry was inspired by it and knew there was nothing simpler than nature itself. The theme involved keeping the cakes as the centerpiece where all the surroundings are kept simple yet stylish and modern. The cakes were based on three different elements. The first being modern fashion, created with dark pleats and lines, with a splash of gold sequins and bows to create a bold simple statement. With another cake, nature is depicted by a wreath of leaves where flowers are blooming along side a wooden painted canvas. The wreath represents the reasoning behind the event - circle of hope that flowers still bloom through the dark days. 92

A colour palette of black, grey, white and bronze was chosen to create something strong, bold and masculine. Additions of bronze gave the cake a lift and also gave a pop of colour to an otherwise monochromatic design. With the cake design being quite sleek and masculine, this was echoed in the style and location of the photos taken. Leini worked with the natural elements of wood and concrete to contrast and complement the metallic finish and the geometric lines of the cake. She also drew inspiration from the elements many men work with in the country on a daily basis, but wanted to create something different to the stereotypical rustic styling. Leini adores geometric patterns and chose this grey toned design to bring depth to the cake. The topper appears to float above. Leini also wanted to bring in the gorgeous texture of timber through this old gate. It is the perfect fit for a masculine cake, yet at the same time softens the harsh lines and pays homage to the land - the lifeblood of where we live in rural Australia.

The colour palette chosen was grey/black, green, bronze and white. The bronze was symbolic of wood instruments such as the violin, and the contrast of black and white is a timeless classic. Wood was chosen to highlight the desserts. The clean lines of the inspiration board were there and the rustic cages of flowers are what stood out with the rusty wall and brown wooden stair case. Straight lines and geometric shapes surrounded the bird cages and were also captured with the back drop. Sarah chose a tall dessert table that went up rather than out. She also wanted to keep with the simplicity of the brief and didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to over crowd her table but keep the table scape as clean as possible. This can also be seen in the simplicity and clean lines of the cake with its single bronze poppy. Sarah chose to juxtapose rustic and straight lined minimalism. The colour palette chosen gives sophistication to the set up, teamed with rustic props, such as wooden boxes, clay pots and preservative jars to keep with the rustic vibe. A mini cake covered in flowers, set in its own bird cage hanging from the ceiling is one of Sarahâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s favourite elements.

the shapes of nature SWEET BEAS

Bianca chose tones of colours not usually associated with nature. Predominantly white, shades of grey with bronze, copper and silver. Despite the shades of grey and charcoal being reminiscent of concrete urban living, and metallics more often associated with objects rather than natural resources - they are of course actually derived of organic compounds. Bianca also wanted to juxtapose natural vs synthetic and highlight stripped back textural elements found in nature and parallel them as manufactured design elements. The concept was to use basic textural elements and patterns from nature, and highlight the simplicity in their structure through cakes & desserts. By stripping the texture in flora back to its most basic form, it reveals the life giving veins as their paramount element. The veins in hydrangea and their foliage were emphasized throughout the table. Also featured were structured simplistic forms of succulents. Succulents have been a repeating theme throughout Biancaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s concept for their symbolism of growth and regeneration. From a single leaf a whole new plant can thrive. They are resilient, strong through the adversity of nature and show beauty through simplicity. Simple shapes and patterns found in nature were echoed in the cakes and desserts.
