Chinatown 2011-09-21: The

Chinese Trading Post 3kms West of Siam Centre Packed with market stalls, street-side restaurants, Chinese medicine stores and probably the greatest concentration of gold shops in the city, Chinatown is an experience not to miss. This historic area is as old as Bangkok itself, its growth spawned by waves of Chinese immigrants who left communist China, settled down here and continued what they did best "trade" Today, Bangkok’s Chinatown is a popular tourist attraction and a food haven for new generation gourmands who flock here after sunset to explore the vibrant street-side cuisine. At day time, it’s no less busy, as hordes of shoppers descend upon this 1-km strip and adjacent Charoenkrung Road to get a day’s worth of staple, trade gold, or pay a visit to one of the Chinese temples. Dusit 2011-07-28:

Grand avenues of Bangkok.

3.5km N.West of Siam Centre Dusit Garden, or simply "Dusit", is a complex of palaces and royal residences in the south of the Dusit district. The palace was established by King Rama V, the first Thai monarch to visit Europe. He was impressed by the Royal parks and residences he had seen there, which were leafy, relaxed, spacious and cool, as opposed to the Grand Palace, which was cramped with buildings for his numerous wives, children and servants. These buildings blocked the air flow inside the Grand Palace, which turned the heat up remarkably. As a substitute, King Rama V started building the Dusit Palace. Use a Grand Palace tour ticket to see the Golden teakwood Palace. Bang Lamphu 2011-07-28: 4kms

West of Siam Centre Classic Thai Temples & Khao San Rd Immediately north of Rattanakosin (Grand Palace) an area prominent in Culture. This zone is home to a very lively travelers scene and a mass of budget accommodation. Some love it, some hate it but it's worth a look especially the main walking street "Khao San Rd" where you will find extensive markets, a huge range of goods from cheap clothes to Thai handicrafts, many inexpensive restaurants and all the different types of people that come will make it a interesting experience. Somewhat surprisingly, the nearby backstreets retain a genuinely Thai feeling, much more so than Bangkok's other main tourist accommodation areas, It's an infusion, dynamic not too extreme yet always passive as is Thai. Rattanakosin 2011-07-28: 4.5kms

West of Siam Centre Historical area, most visited area by tourists. Straddling the Chao Phraya River and situated just north of Chinatown, the Old City (Rattanakosin) is where you'll find Bangkok's most spectacular and revered historical attractions. Not only part of the Kingdom's rich past, but intrinsic to it, a day or two spent exploring here will give you a deep insight into the heart, soul and psyche of the Thai people. Founded by King Rama I in 1782 at the start of the Chakri Dynasty, it was originally carved out of a bend in the river to strengthen the defensive position of the new Siamese capital. Sights include the regal majesty of the Grand Palace, the awe-inspiring beauty of Wat Phra Kaew, and the traditional learning centres Wat Pho and Wat Mahathat, the latter widely considered one of Thailand's first universities and a centre for meditation. Sanam Luang, a historic park next to the Grand Palace traditionally used for important Royal or Buddhist ceremonies, and the National Gallery can also be found here. Sathon / Silom 2011-07-10: 2.5

kms South of Siam Centre Who would have thought an empty, swamp-like field with a tall 'Silom' (windmill) stuck in the middle would somehow become Bangkok's equivalent to New York's Wall Street? Today, Si Lom (by day anyway) is undoubtedly one of the city's most important financial districts with many bank headquarters, financial institutions and office buildings. Fine hotels, smaller type malls and great restaurants abound in the area too - and then of course there's the infamous nightlife scene of Patpong (detailed in "shopping" and "Nightlife tour guides"). Visit the citys' most famous Park (early morning or evening). Day time vast the chaos of busy business life and evening where anyone and everyone enjoys a stroll through the tropical gardens. Sukhumvit 2011-07-23: 3kms

East of Siam Centre. An array of old and new, heavily populated with Hotels, Bars and Nightlife. Major feature is well positioned for Transport systems, interchange of above/below trains and fast River Taxi. Urbane and sophisticated, buzzing Sukhumvit Road offers a popular alternative to spiritual Bangkok. The longest road in Thailand, both it and its many adjoining 'sois' (sub-streets) are poor on traditional tourist attractions but rich in of-theminute shopping, eating and nightlife. While there are touches of 'Thai-ness' on every corner, the many fashionable restaurants, bars, air-conditioned malls, luxury hotels and hip clubs give the area a distinctly modern, cosmopolitan, aspirational flavour. Some of the city's most sinful spots, red-light districts Nana Plaza (Soi 4) and Soi Cowboy (off Soi 23) are also found here. And little, stress-busting pockets of calm can be found in the sweet cafes, atmospheric restaurants and lush day spas that hide down many of its Sois. Thonburi The old Capital 5kms West of Siam Centre 2011-09-10:

After the sack of Ayutthaya in 1767, General Phraya Taksin made Thonburi the new capital of Siam for a chief period of time. Having stayed an independent province until it was merged into Bangkok in 1972. Thonburi is a vast district that consists of the entire West bank of the Chao Phraya river in Bangkok. It has avoided much of the modern development seen elsewhere. Its man-made network of khlongs, including Khlong Mon and Khlong Bangkok Noi, retains much of their ramshackle charm where you can still see stilted shacks, old wooden townhouses and dilapidated lean-tos which is much how people in Bangkok used to live. The Phaya Thai district was set up in 1966 taking areas that were part of Dusit and Bang Kapi districts. In the 80's the area re scaled and dissected to address urbanisation issues. MRT Subway metro: With 18 stations covering main roads in Bangkok including Rama IV, Sukhumvit, Lad Prao and Pahonyothin, MRT opened in 2004 and operates everyday from 06.00 to midnight. Connecting to the BTS Skytrain at Sukhumvit Station (Asoke BTS Station), Lumping Station (Silom BTS Station) and Chatuchak Station (Mo Chit BTS Station) with a link to Hua Lampong train station. Fares: 15 to 60 baht. Taxi: Very easy to find everywhere in Bangkok, with the meter starting from 35 baht, it's a low cost convenient transport when the traffic is flowing. However, always make sure the driver activate the meter. Then there is the ubiquitous Tuk tuks touting for business. They’re a fun ‘must-do’ experience but in Bangkok peak traffic the induced fumes are "not fun".
