The Swan Valley welcome is as warm as the sun that ripens the grapes; visitors are embraced as if old friends, drawn in by a sharing and inclusive nature, they keep coming back. Rising from the rich earth and crowned by endless blue skies, the Swan Valley landscape is different from any other in Perth.
4
It's a place where schedules aren’t needed, and clocks shouldn’t be watched. In fact, we encourage people to slow down, take time and relax, or run the risk of missing one of life's greatest adventures. It doesn't take long for visitors to adapt to our slower pace of life, to take advantage of the chance to spend time with those closest to them, to reconnect, and to reignite common interests and passions. Our passion comes through in everything we do; our food, our wine, our art, our landscape. We consist of the ultimate collection of artisans just waiting to fire up your sense of beauty, of taste, and of fun. Understated but not underrated, the Swan Valley is a popular must-visit destination. Known as a food lovers haven, a wine connoisseurs delight and a naturalist's dream. Visitors are spoilt for choice by the raw, natural environment and the wonderful people that live and work here.
Swan Valley will leave you with Lasting Memories a visit to the

SWAN VALLEY
REGIONAL WINE STYLES The Swan Valley has a warm, Mediterranean-style climate. This, along with the rich soils and good access to water from the Swan River, has allowed the region to establish itself as a leading producer of a broad array of high quality wines, ideally suited to Perth’s climate and a smorgasbord of cuisines.
SPARKLING WINES
Sparkling wines have long been the favoured drink to celebrate any occasion. Making sparkling wine in the traditional Mèthode Champenoise, the same method that produces Champagne in France, is labour intensive but very much worth the extra effort. In the Swan Valley, delicious and creamy sparkling wines are produced from traditional varieties such as Chardonnay and also Chenin Blanc and Shiraz.
VERDELHO
Verdelho is a variety that thrives in the climate of the Swan Valley. It is crisp and dry with tropical notes and is perfect with or without food. Ideal to serve with Tapas, freshly shucked oysters and most Asian Cuisines.
CHENIN BLANC
Chenin Blanc is grown extensively in the Valley and often forms the basis of wines called ‘classic’. Chenin Blanc is a crisp, dry, minerally style with intense flavour. Ideal to serve with seafood and light-style chicken dishes.
PETIT VERDOT
Petit Verdot has gained a strong following in the Swan Valley. Dense in colour and highly aromatic with notes of blueberries and spice flavours on the palate. It is best matched with rich foods including hearty casseroles, roast duck and strong cheddar cheese.
SHIRAZ
Shiraz is used to make a full bodied red wine suitable for early consumption or for cellaring. The use of new and old oak adds greater complexity and depth. In the Swan Valley, there are still some blocks of very old Shiraz vines that produce a minimum yield but very high quality wine. Great food matches include grilled red meats, coq au vin and dry cheddar-style cheeses.
WINERIES
FORTIFIED WINES
12
Fortified wines are often referred to as liquid sunshine as the fruit is left on the vines for extended ripening in the warm summer sun. The berries are semi-dried which concentrates the grape sugars and flavours. The term ‘fortified’ refers to the addition of a small amount of brandy spirit to strengthen the partly fermented wine which is then left to mature in an oak barrel. Some of the luscious fortified wines made in the Valley include Pedro Ximenes, Muscadelle, Liqueur Shiraz and Liqueur Verdelho.

Local Produce
The first grapevines in Western Australia date back to 1829 with plantings established by Thomas Waters at Olive Farm in South Guildford. In 1840, John Septimus Roe planted table grapes at Sandalford in Caversham. There was a steady increase in demand for table grapes during the 1850s and by the 1890s the Swan Valley had established a thriving export industry. Today, viticulture still forms part of the rich rural ambience of the destination. Table grapes remain the largest commercial crop. Visitors will be able to distinguish the vines as they are grown on A-Frame trellising. From December to April, visitors can enjoy a variety of freshly picked white, red and black grapes direct from the grower. This is an experience favoured by many locals and beloved by visitors who rarely have the opportunity to visit a farm or meet a farmer.
DISTILLERIES
LOCAL PRODUCE
Straight from farm gate to your dinner plate!
26
The Valley has plenty of farm gate stalls jam-packed with freshly picked produce from the farm. Produce is seasonal and subject to change, but always full of flavour and guaranteed to make your tastebuds sing. In summer, expect to feast on glorious grapes, watermelons, rockmelons, peaches, figs, dragonfruit, mangoes and tomatoes. Come autumn, the Valley is offering late season grapes, pomegranates and brimming with an array of vegies perfect for roasting. Winter is full of zesty citrus and strawberries, while in spring you'll find asparagus and broad beans.

Heritage
History buffs, step right this way. The picturesque village of Guildford was established during the founding of the Swan River Colony in 1829 and today it’s one of only three towns in Perth on the National Trust register. Exquisite colonial architecture is just the tip of the iceberg in historical Guildford – there are also fascinating museums, churches, theatre houses and the oldest wineries in the state to discover nearby. The Swan Valley’s history starts more than 40,000 years ago with the original custodians of the land, the Noongar Aboriginal people of the Whadjuk tribe. The Whadjuk people have a deep connection with the land and tell of a Dreamtime serpent, the Waugal which once travelled across the country, carving out the Swan Valley and the Swan River. They say the Waugal still lives deep beneath the Swan River waters to this day. The Swan Valley is also home to the oldest vines in the state. Western Australia’s first vines were planted at Olive Farm Wines in 1829, just one year after the colony was settled. While Sandalford is best known for its wines today, the Roe family were initially significant table grape producers for the region. By 1950, Houghton, Sandalford, John Kosovich, Pinelli Estate, Garbin Estate and Talijancich wineries were all boasting flourishing vines. Most of these vintage vines are still family owned and run by descendants with generations of passionate winemaking in their blood.

No wonder our wines taste so good, we’ve had plenty of time to practise!

Guildford HERITAGE Walking Trails Guildford was one of the first towns established when WA was settled in 1829, so the town is brimming with historic significance and is also as pretty as a picture. With flat grounds that are lush and green, it's a glorious spot to stroll around or take in a walk trail. Take your pick from four self guided trails, each offering a history lesson, tales of colonial life and a rundown of the intriguing characters that have called Guildford home.

Retail Therapy Guildford is the undisputed antique capital of Perth. It has the city’s largest collection of antique shops along the charming James Street café strip. Along this historic main street, you can find an array of antique and bric-à-brac stores where you can pick up some one-of-a-kind items. Whether you are a curious shopper or discerning collector, it is easy to get lost scouring the items and clothing from yesteryear. More great shopping finds are scattered throughout the Guildford townsite, with gourmet delights and craft stores amongst the famous antique shops. The frequently changing stock at the shops means return visits offer more surprises. Meanwhile, there are markets held on the third Sunday of every month and twilight markets held during the warmer months where there are even more craft items to find and gourmet treats to be had.

Beyond ƒe Swan Valley
Gidgegannup Gidgegannup is a rural neighbour of the Swan Valley, made up of beautiful native bushland, oodles of fresh air and quiet country charm. The name of the area has Noongar origins, meaning "the place where spears are made". The Indigenous people of the area called it Gidjeejarnup, which later developed into its current name with the influence of colonial settlers. Gidgegannup has some of the most beautiful natural walking trails and national parks around, so get your hiking gear ready. Berry Reserve, Noble Falls, Walyunga and Karakamia Sanctuary show off the area’s beautiful natural fauna and flora, and provide seriously breathtaking views of Perth and the metropolitan area. Searching for somewhere to entertain the whole family? Gidgegannup has the goods. Grab a bite at the local country pub, a treat from the bakery or pack a picnic and visit stunning Noble Falls. Check out the annual Small Farm Field Day in May and the 48 family fun-filled Gidge Show every October.
Bullsbrook Bullsbrook is a charming farming town with beautiful surrounds and a rich history. Mainly populated by farmers, and surrounded by vast national parks and bushland, it’s hard to believe Bullsbrook is barely an hour out of Perth’s CBD and 25 minutes from Midland. Bullsbrook has been home to Pearce Airbase, a training facility for the Royal Australian Air Force, since 1939. The RAAF airbase is the busiest in Australia, and is the only permanent airbase found in the State. If you’re a nature lover, Bullsbrook may well be your utopia. It’s close to the beautiful Walyunga National Park, the Bullsbrook Natural Reserve, Leda Nature Reserve, the Avon Valley National Park and the nearby Moondyne Nature Reserve. Perhaps the most iconic attraction in Bullsbrook is The Maze, home of Outback Splash. This wonderful water park is a perfect option for a fun-filled family day out. From water slides to mazes, to cuddly native animals, there’s something to keep the kids occupied all year round. If you want to learn more about Bullsbrook’s history, the BRRA Museum at West Bullsbrook Hall has collected, preserved and displayed fascinating Bullsbrook district heritage items including documents, photographs, oral histories, artefacts and machinery. Bullsbrook is also home to one of the only strawberry farms in WA where you can pick your very own stash of juicy red strawberries straight from the plant when they come into season! 49
