WHERE TO EAT We recommend you eat at family restaurants in department stores, restaurants in shopping centres or restaurant arcades of office buildings. At these restaurants, they offer ”lunch time specials” including rice, soup, salad or pickles, and meat or fish. Meals cost between $5 to $10. You can make your choice by pointing out meal replicas with prices in the window before entering the restaurant. Drinks are also not expensive at these restaurants compared with hotel bars. Dinner is also available at $10 - $20 per person. It is not as expensive as rumoured.

shopping arcades do not accept credit cards. MEALS BREAKFAST: Juice, ham or bacon, eggs, toast, tea or coffee. LUNCH: Sandwiches, meat, seafood, salad, vegetable, bread, rice, tea or coffee. DINNER: Soup, meat, seafood, salad, vegetables, bread, rice, sweets, tea or coffee. Please note cereal is not provided with breakfast. Passengers on diets or with restricted diets or with restricted tastes should purchase the tour without meals. Meal cost will be deducted.

USE JAPAN TRAVEL PHONE While traveling in Japan, you might have some difficulty in communicating with local people or need more detailed information on the places or attractions you want to see. The Japan Travel Phone is your helping hand to an English speaking travel expert, ready to help you solve a language problem or offer any travel information.

IMPORTANT Persons who are not physically fit should not undertake a lengthy tour of Japan. During all our tours a lot of walking is involved in and around train stations, ferry piers, through parks and gardens. There is no maximum age limit, the only requirement is average physical condition and the ability to climb flights of stairs without assistance. Hand carry bags are the responsibility of each person. Passengers are kindly requested to refrain from smoking during coach tours. Frequent stops are made for the benefit of smoking passengers.

SEASONS The four seasons in most of Japan including Tokyo and Kyoto are:- Spring: March, April, May - Summer: June, July, August - Autumn: September, October, November - Winter: December, January, February. The rainy season is from mid-June to mid July. Humidity goes up but there is no squall type rain.

MONEY Yen is the Japanese currency. There are four kinds of notes: 10,000 yen, 5,000 yen, 2,000 yen and 1,000 yen. The coin consists of 1 yen, 5 yen, 10 yen, 50 yen, 100 yen and 500 yen coins. We suggest you purchase some yen cash before your trip.

ELECTRICITY The electric current for home use is only 100 volts A.C., throughout Japan but there are two different cycles in use; 50 in eastern Japan which includes Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka. Leading hotels in Tokyo and other big cities have two outlets of 110 and 220 volts though sockets usually accept a two-leg plug only. Some hotels have hair dryers and other electrical appliances on free or rental basis.

BUSINESS HOURS

TRAVELLERS CHEQUES AND CREDIT CARD Travellers cheques are accepted at hotels, banks and major stores. We suggest you purchase most of your travellers cheques in Yen. This will save you time when cashing them and protect you from further possible-de-valuation of the Australian dollar. In some areas on longer tour visits it is difficult to cash Australian dollar travellers cheques and usually the exchange rate is not as favourable as you may get at your local bank before leaving.

NISEKO

Niseko is regarded as one of Japan’s premier ski resorts due to both the amount and type of powder snow and is fast becoming one of the most popular winter destinations in the world. With wide open courses, tree runs, backcountry, off-piste, first tracks and night-skiing, Niseko caters for all levels from beginner to expert. For those wishing to go that little bit further, hiking trails lead from the highest lifts to the summit. An extensive lift system covers the 64 courses and includes gondolas and covered chairlifts. With the lifts meeting at the summit, skiers have access to Grand Hirafu, Niseko Village and Annupuri resorts which combine to make Niseko United, one of the largest ski areas in Hokkaido.

JA PA N R AIL PA S S A N D OT H ER S ERVI C ES For the more adventurous Australian, group travel does not afford them the freedom to explore their holiday destination to the fullest, particularly in such an inspiring and exciting country as Japan. To have this additional freedom, however, one must prefer this type of travel and accept the challenge of finding your way without the constant help of a guide. JAPAN RAIL PASS and LIMOUSINE BUS VOUCHER, is the most ideal way to travel around Japan by yourself. If you are planning to go to Japan you must buy the JAPAN Rail PASS before you leave Australia because you cannot purchase the pass in Japan. JAPAN RAIL PASS allows unlimited usage of Japan Railways rail, boat and bus systems including Shinkansen bullet train. There are two kinds of Japan Rail Pass GREEN and ORDINARY. The Japan Rail Pass Green, is valid in superior class Green Cars and Green Cabins without additional charges. The Japan Rail Pass is available to: A foreign tourist visiting Japan from abroad for sightseeing purposes under entry status 4-1-4. (Available only to Japanese Passport holders who qualify to live permanently in a foreign country) Purchase an Exchange Order through your travel agent or us prior to departure overseas. The Rail Pass cannot be purchased in Japan. After arrival in Japan, go to the JR Information and Ticket Office in Narita Airport, or to one of the JR Travel Service Centres, such as the one at Tokyo Station. Exchange your Exchange Order for your Japan Rail Pass, when you fill out the Pass application, specify the First Date on which you want to use the Pass. Show your passport at the same time of exchange. Your Exchange Order must be used within 3 months of the date of issue. Seat reservations may be made in advance without additional payment; seat availability cannot be guaranteed otherwise. To do this, you should apply at any Travel Service Centre or Midori-no-madoguchi (Green window) in a JR station. If you hold a Japan Rail Pass Ordinary and want to use a berth or Green Car seat, you must pay the regular berth or Green Car charge and the associated limited or ordinary express charge. If you hold a Japan Rail Pass Green and want to use a berth, you must pay the regular berth charge and the associated limited express or ordinary express charge. The Pass cannot be reissued if lost or stolen. The Pass is refundable with original exchange order within a year from the issue date, handling fee will be collected.
