PROJECT SOORIYAGAMA, HABARANA
Identification Sooriyagama is a rural village close to HABARANA, a highly popular zone which has close access to four UNESCO world Heritage sites. AUTHENTICITIES identified this project together with one of our friend and premium Italian partner Ms. Silvia Terreni, Product Manager of MISTRAL based in Torino, Italy. Silvia was filled with “emotion” when we visited the school site with our President, Shanitha Fernando.
Together, they visited the Sooriyagama School in Habarana, a government rural school consisting of little over 40 students. After a thorough inspection of the school premises, Silvia identified to re-build the primary section together with AUTHENTICITIES. The primary section building was a wattle and daub structure with a cadjan roof, which leaked whenever it rained. You could just imagine the plight of these poor children who had nowhere else to move and had to abandon their studies. The monsoon season could be particularly disturbing and during the dry period the sun could be equally devastating to these poor students. The floor was uneven and dilapidated and gets muddy during the rainy season. The structure was not safe and immediate attention was required.
Scope Sylvia agreed to fund majority of this project with a private fund collected through her network of friends in Italy and the rest through funds collected by Authenticities through its “Connect” initiative. The plan was to totally re-build the entire structure, roof and a cement floor providing these primary students with a safe, secure and a more comfortable building to continue their daily studies.
Our NCP Coordinator, Herath was assigned to visit the school site regularly, sometimes daily to visit the school site, hand over funding and coordinate with all efforts including labour and material.

Completion - A dream come true
Today, there is hope for these children. Filled with broad smiles, chatter and laughter, they eagerly visit the school not too bothered of any weather conditions and know for sure that their school books, tables and chairs safe and their uniforms in good shape. They now see their future much more hopeful, and their teachers even more motivated to take them through their curriculum. With a little help, compassion and effort, we have put a smile on children who deserve a better life and education. A project by Connect by Authenticities!
