Gardiner puts exclamation point on season. It has been quite a year for Mark Gardiner. First, he just missed qualifying for the US Publinks finishing a shot from qualifying. Then he outplays a strong field of amateurs and professionals to grab the lone qualifying spot for the US Senior Open. You would think after that he would rest on his laurels. Think again. ADVISORY COMMITTEE Scott Thomas, Chairman Dustin Ashby Tom Barry Skip Berkmeyer Jim Dunn David Rhoads Curt Rohe

Welcome to summer finally arriving within the last couple weeks! I am not one to complain as we have been so fortunate this season with the weather for MAGA championships and the USGA qualifying rounds. The season always flies by, but I Curt Rohe believe the weather we Executive Director experienced enhanced that fact. The end of August means winding down, though we had a wonderful Senior Championship this month at Greenbriar Hills CC. Mark Gardiner added to what was already a remarkable season by capturing the championship by a shot over Andy Frost. We are looking forward to conducting the inaugural US Four-Ball Championship qualifying for the men and women over the next two months. The women (six teams) will compete September 23 at St. Clair CC and the men (50 teams) at Bellerive CC on October 6. August is also the end for one of our interns, Eric Mendelson. Eric has headed back to the University of Missouri for his final year at the Evans Scholar House. Eric was a tremendous asset to our “team” this season, and we thank him for his hard work and dedication to MAGA for the last three months. Good luck to your senior year at MIZZOU! I also want to take a portion of my article to say thank you to two of the most dedicated volunteers MAGA has ever had; Tom and Alice Wohlgemuth. I cannot even begin to count the number of days and countless hours these two put in over the years officiating for MAGA! They have recently moved to Waco, TX to be closer to family and will be sorely missed around MAGA championships going forward. This edition of The Metropolitan is the final monthly issue of the season. The next issue will cover SeptemberOctober as we officially wrap up the season over the next couple months. This endeavor has been a great experience and I must thank Jim Healey for his expertise in seeing this program off the ground. We hope you, our members, have enjoyed receiving the newsletter. As always, if you have any questions or comments please email us at metropolitan@metga.org. As always, feel free to reach out to me at curt@metga.org.

St. Louis golf can boast of many “firsts” in the history of golf. Glen Echo was the site of the first Gold Medal Olympic Golf Matches and the only Gold Medal Team Golf Event (so far) in Olympic History. St. Louis was the site of the first U.S. Amateur played west of the Mississippi in 1921, and the first U.S. Women’s Amateur in 1925. In 1947, during the U.S. Open at St. Louis, KSD-TV broadcast the first golf matches. It was also the first time that gallery ropes were used during the Open. In 1965, at the U.S. Open at Bellerive, that event marked the first time that the event was held over four days. Previously, the final two rounds were both played in one day. In 1981, Bellerive hosted the first U.S. Mid-Amateur. With all of these “firsts” you would think that there would not be much else. However, you would be slightly off base. Two area players - Don Bliss (Norwood Hills) and Mark Boyajian (St. Clair CC) - each earned a remarkable “first” during their play at a U.S. Mid-Amateur competition. Can you imagine what it was? In 1985, during the first qualifying round, Don made a hole-in-one on the eighth and tenth holes at Brookhaven GC in Dallas. He was the first - and so far the only one - to make two aces during a single round in any USGA championship! Boyajian followed up the next year with an equally impressive first. In 1986, at Annandale CC in Madison,Wisconsin, Mark became the first player in USGA history to post a 29. He did so on his first nine during his first round. It wasn’t until later that Jim Holtgrieve brought this to the attention of the USGA that Mark was properly recognized for this accomplishment.

RULES OF GOLF CORNER Officiating during the summer at MAGA championships or USGA qualifying rounds we have numerous situations come up that are always interesting. This occurrence happened during the recent MAGA Senior Championship at Greenbriar Hills CC. A player hit his tee shot toward an area marked as a Water Hazard (yellow) which also tied into Out of Bounds down the left of the hole . The Player assumed that his ball was in the lateral water hazard and put another ball in play under 26-1(a). After hitting his tee shot under 26-1, a Fellow Competitor (not in his group) informs him that the original ball was Out of Bounds. What is the Ruling? If the Player WAS virtually certain that his ball was in the Water Hazard when he put a ball in play under 26-1(a), then he can proceed under 26-1, incurring a one stroke penalty. However, if the Player was NOT virtually certain (in this case he assumed) and he put a ball in play under Rule 26-1, he has played from a wrong place and the original ball is lost. The player must re-play from the tee under rule 27-1 prior to playing from the next tee or he is disqualified. He incurs three (3) penalty strokes, two (2) for Playing from a Wrong Place (Rule 20-7) and one (1) for the ball Out of Bounds (Rule 27-1).

TEN MINUTE TOUGHNESS: The Mental Training Program for Winning Before the Game Begins Ellen Port swears by it. In fact, prior to a practice session in January for 14 prospective Curtis Cup players, reading it was one of her homework assignments for the players. Now we’re talking about 14 of the most talented women collegiate players in the country at some of the top golf programs. While Ellen won’t say this was the reason why they dominated the GB&I Team so thoroughly, it certainly did not hurt! Written by Dr. Jason Selk, 10-Minute Toughness is the first book of its kind that teaches individuals exactly what to do to be mentally prepared for competition and sports, and it does so in a very user-friendly manner. Targeting tools for mental toughness, it is designed to help competitors and coaches identify what it takes to be successful and to improve focus, concentration, confidence, and motivation requiring just 10 minutes of practice per day.” So, the first question asked is, who is this Dr. Jason Selk? Turns out, he’s a pretty impressive guy! While serving as the Director of Mental Training for the St Louis Cardinals, Dr. Jason Selk helped the team win their first World Series in over 20 years, and in 2011 he assisted the Cardinals in the historic feat of winning their second World Championship in a six year period. Dr Selk’s second book, Executive Toughness, while 10-Minute Toughness, is on pace to be one of the best-selling sport psychology books of all time. First, we must ask ourselves, what really is mental toughness? Mental toughness is the ability to have the thoughts in your head help produce your desired results. Golfers know all too well the the impact of negative thinking on performance, as there is often plenty of time between shots for self-doubt to take over. The key to mental toughness is to have the thoughts in your head be productive. The hard part is that the natural way of thinking, especially when the pressure is on, is to have thoughts that are unproductive. This is one of the fundamental reasons that success is so difficult to acquire. When the pressure is on, it is normal for a person to have thoughts of self-doubt and negativity, or even the typical 'don’t' thinking. For example the football player is likely to hear the internal words of “don’t drop this pass,” or the baseball player tells himself “don’t strikeout.” This type of thinking is at the opposite end of the mental toughness spectrum, as it actually is counter-productive in terms of producing desired results. If the baseball player is thinking to himself, "don't strikeout," he is NOT thinking about what he should focus on in order to get a hit. Productive thoughts focus on what is needed for success. The football player trying to catch the pass might say, “see it in and squeeze it tight,” while the baseball player says, "track the ball, short compact swing”. The hard part is having the productive thoughts when the pressure is on. The two steps necessary to accomplishing mental toughness are to first identify what your productive thoughts are, and then train your mind to have those thoughts at the important times. For example, a golfer may say to himself while putting, "see the spot, roll in it." Practicing this statement in a daily mental workout and practicing replacing all negative thinking (e.g., "don't miss this putt") with positive performance cues will not only help prevent anxiety on the tee, but will also create more consistent performance. Remember, it is abnormal to be mentally tough. Mental toughness does not happen on accident. Just like physical strength and precision, it takes a lot of work. You have to know first what your mental toughness thoughts are, and then you have to train your mind to be able to have the mental toughness thoughts especially when the pressure is on. This might sound funny but I want you to be abnormal, I want you to be abnormally mentally tough enough to have the thoughts in your head make it easier for you to achieve your dreams. Being great isn’t easy, it’s not supposed to be easy. Choose to be great everyday by putting energy into training your mind to have productive thoughts and mental toughness. The Metropolitan

US SENIOR AMATEUR QUALIFYING (Continued from page 1)

Glen Echo lived up to its reputation as a top-flight track as the U.S. Senior Amateur competitors found the historic course up to the challenge during qualifying for the championship, to be played at Big Canyon Country Club in Newport Beach, California. With Scott Edwards, Jim Dunn and Craig Hardcastle managing rounds of 73, they forced a three-for-two playoff to see who would be on their way to Newport Beach. On the first playoff hole, the long dogleg right par-4 18th, Edwards made par to ensure himself a trip to California, while both Dunn and Hardcastle posted bogey 5s, forcing them to move to the first hole to determine the second qualifier. The 380-yard first hole was playing nearly a half a stroke over par during the competition, with both players gladly took their 4s as they walked up the hill to the 18th tee once again. The 18th, at 411-yards, was also playing difficult for the day, yielding only two birdies. Though both players made par here during regulation play, under the pressure of the playoff both made bogey earlier and they each missed the green again with their second shot. However, Hardcastle, short of the green Jim Dunn was the odd-man with his approach, made a nice recovery from 43-yards away to 3-feet to give himself out in the 3 for 2 playoff. a chance for par. Meanwhile, Dunn was in the area to the left of the greenside bunker. With the pin cut to the left side, Jim tried to finesse a shot to get it close. Unfortunately, his third landed in the near bunker, under a steep lip - forcing him to take an unplayable lie giving Hardcastle two-putts to earn the second playoff spot. T1

ST. LOUIS GOLF HISTORY THE 1948 PGA

Mike Turnesa (l) and Ben Hogan with the Wannamaker Trophy.

Mike Turnesa in dark shirt, putts on the downhill par-3 2nd green during the finals. Today this area is part of the par-5 second on the West course.

8

In 1948, the PGA was played at Match Play and the host club was Norwood Hills. Following the 36-hole qualifying rounds, the low 63 players joined defending champion Jim Ferrier to determine the winner. A number of local professionals were in the group including: Walter Ambo and Frank Moore. Other notables were: Sam Snead, Lew Worsham, Gene Sarazen, Horton Smith, Jimmy Demaret, Lloyd Mangrum and Claude Harmon. Also qualifying was Ben Hogan at 138 (134 was low qualifing score) and Mike Turnesa, of the six famous Turnesa brothers. Hogan had posted a 66 - 72 while Snead had put up a pair of 68s. There were a few upsets in the early rounds as Ferrier bowed out in round two, as did Moore. Ferrier is quoted as saying, “There are a lot of hills at Norwood. No old man will win this Championship.” The quarterfinals saw Harmon down Snead in 42 holes, while Demaret defeated George Fazio 5 & 4, with Turnesa and Hogan both winning their matches. In the semifinals, Turnesa beat Harmon, the current Masters champion, in 37 holes, while Hogan edged his good friend Demaret 2&1. During their match, both players finished at 10-under par The final match should have been as interesting. While Turnesa consistently outdrove Hogan, Ben relied on his superb iron play. His 66 on the morning round found him 4up. His 7 & 6 victory was the 2nd largest margin of victory in the PGA at that time. WIth the PGA played in May, Hogan went on to win the US Open in June, becoming the first to win both in the same year since Gene Sarazen in 1922. For the week, Hogan was a combined 35-under par over 213 holes in his 10 rounds. But for a man of 36, he was also quite weary. Following his auto accident in 1949, Hogan would not compete in the PGA again until 1960.
