Greetings MAGA Members! I hope this edition of The Metropolitan finds everyone well and enjoying the weather this past month, lot of great golfing weather in August! I even got out and played 3-4 times this Curt Rohe month…which is usually about my Executive Director yearly quota. When we reach August the golfing season for MAGA seems to quiet down just a bit, we had just one major event this month. The MAGA Senior took place at Whitmoor CC a couple weeks back with Andy Fogarty taking home the title. This championship plus the District Senior last week has made for a really tight Senior Player of the Year race, David Johnson leads by 12.5 points over Tom Barry. Full point standings can be see later in the newsletter. In September we have 3 USGA qualifying rounds to conduct, staring with US Senior Amateur this week at Sunset CC. US Mid-Amateur Qualifying next week at Aberdeen and then wrap up with 2016 US Amateur Four-Ball Qualifying at Quincy CC the end of the month. I have stated this before, but the USGA qualifying rounds are one my fondest parts of what we do at MAGA, providing golfers the opportunity to go and compete in USGA championships! This will be our last monthly edition of The Metropolitan, we will revert back to bi-monthly editions until next spring. I appreciate the feedback I get when I am out from our members who take the time to read through the eNewsletter…thank you! Keep it in the fairway! As always, feel free to reach out to me at curt@metga.org. Curt

3 is one of the most liberal and flexible Rules of Golf. It is designed to help the player get through an uncertain situation without penalty. The player’s responsibility is to follow the Rule 3-3a procedure above. It is the Committee’s responsibility to sort out which ball will count.
RULES OF GOLF CORNER PLAYING A SECOND BALL You are in a stroke play tournament and suddenly find yourself with a Rules predicament. You are uncertain as to the correct procedure. There is no Rules official present (or, maybe there is). You don’t want to do anything wrong for fear of being penalized, or worse, disqualified. What’s a player to do? Answer: play a second ball under Rule 3-3a.
Other Key Points: 1. Play of a second ball applies only to stroke play. In match play, players can sort out their own rulings in doubtful situations. If the players can’t agree, the opponent(s) may make a claim. A second ball played in match play is a wrong ball and can result in a loss-of-hole penalty if a proper claim is made (Decision 3-3/9). 2. The Rules allow for play of a second ball, but not a third ball (Decision 3-3/10). 3. The player is advised to always hole out with both balls regardless of number of strokes taken (he doesn’t know which ball the Committee will rule to count, and failure to hole out with the ball determined to count will result in disqualification; Decision 3-3/7.5). 4. BEFORE returning his score card, the player MUST advise an official that he played a second ball so that the Committee can rule as to which ball counts; otherwise, he risks disqualification (the Rules official at the scoring table should always ask if anyone has played a second ball before accepting any score cards).
RULE 3-3. DOUBT AS TO PROCEDURE a. Procedure In stroke play, if a competitor is doubtful of his rights or the correct procedure during the play of a hole, he may, without penalty, complete the hole with two balls. After the doubtful situation has arisen and before taking further action, the competitor must announce to his marker or fellow-competitor that he intends to play two balls and which ball he wishes to count if the Rules permit. The competitor must report the facts of the situation to the Committee before returning his score card. If he fails to do so, he is disqualified. Note: If the competitor takes further action before dealing with the doubtful situation, Rule 3-3 is not applicable. The score with original ball counts or, if the original ball is not one of the balls being played, the score with the first ball put into play counts, even if the Rules do not allow the procedure adopted for that ball. However, the competitor incurs no penalty for having played a second ball, and any penalty strokes incurred solely by playing that ball do not count in his score.
Examples Area Not Marked As Ground Under Repair A player’s ball comes to rest in a relatively deep tire track in a bare muddy spot on the fairway, an area not marked as ground under repair. No Rules official is present to make a ruling. The player announces to his marker or fellow competitor that he will finish play of the hole with two balls – his original ball as it lies and a second ball played after taking relief from the tire track under Rule 25-1b (Relief from Abnormal Ground Condition) - and that he wants his score
Rule 3-3b [Determination of Score for Hole] and Decision 3-3/0.5 [Guidelines for Determining Which Ball Counts When Player Proceeds under Rule 3-3] cover the procedures for determining which ball counts. These are somewhat lengthy and involved so won’t be discussed here. Suffice it to say that Rule 3-

DUPSKE CLAIMS ANOTHER SENIOR AGE-GROUP TITLE. Still, his 1-under 71 left him two clear of 2012 winner and 2013 and 2014 runner up Andy Frost, with two-time champion Scott Edwards and Tim Begley another shot back. Despite playing to nearly 6,800 yards, Whitmoor’s South course found eighteen players in the Championship Division, a little more than half the field, post rounds in the 70s. It looked like the final round would result in a dogfight for the title. However, Fogarty seemed to want a different outcome. A lone bogey on his second hole on Friday was quickly erased by a birdie on the par 4 third. Two additional birdies spread among nothing but pars left him with a 2-under round and a 3-under 141 total. Norwood’s David Johnson put on a brief charge with an even par round of 72, however, his opening round of 76 left him needing to go much lower. Tom Barry, who played with Fogarty during the first round, Andy Fogarty followed his opening 75 with a 1-over 73 to pull level with Johnson. Yet both players found themselves seven shots back of Fogarty’s fine play. Scott Edwards rounds of 74-75 were good enough for fourth place, while Joe Timpone posted 76-74 for fifth place. In the age groups competitions, Dale Black had rounds of 78-77 to capture the gross title in the 50-59 age group while Roy Roberts took the net title. In the 60-65 group, Ron Miles had a gross 150, taking that division, while Steve Zonca claimed the net title. Clark Amos claimed yet another gross title in the 66-70 age group with Leo Age 60-65: Low Gross – Ron Miles; Age 50-59: Low Gross – Dale Black; Hefner taking the net award. Low Net – Steve Zonca Roberts Roy – Net Low Ageless Don Dupske, a fourtime Senior titleholder, took the 70 and over gross title, with Buck Clement earning net honors.

AMATEUR CHAMPIONS 25 YEARS OF CHAMPIONSHIP GOLF BERKMEYER, WELDEN & LONG SKIP BERKMEYER There is not much to say about Skip’s career, except, WOW! Three state titles and three MGA Mid-Amateur crowns, two-time USGA Mid-Am Medalist, countless US Amateur and Mid-Amateur qualifications, along with Publinks, MAGA Open, Match Play and other titles. Yet, heading into the 2009 Amateur, this was one title that had eluded him. A runner-up in 2008 to Adam Long, Skip arrived at Bellerive ready to capture the final jewel in his crown. He came out strong with an opening round of even par 70. Tim Cochran was next at 72, followed by Jim Holtgrieve at 73 along with defending champion Long. Skip’s 72 in the second round gave him a 1-shot edge over Scott Langley and Ted Moloney. A final round 72 was good enough for a two-shot edge over Moloney, who posted a 73. Long (68) with third at 7-over, followed by Holtgrieve and Langley.
Skip Berkmeyer
KYLE WELDON
Kyle Weldon
One of only two back-to-back Amateur champions (David Estes is the other), Weldon claimed the 2012 and 2013 titles with outstanding play. His first title saw him edge Skip Berkmeyer, who spent the previous night in the hospital recovering from heat exhaustion. Still, during the final round, Skip posted a 71. Yet, Weldon’s 68 gave him a 54 hole total of 4-under 209 and a 3-shot victory over Berkmeyer and Kevin Bell. It was a bit easier in 2013. He opened with a 5-under 65 at Persimmon Woods GC. A second round 73 let a few players close the gap as he carried a 2-shot edge going into the final round. Phil Caravia carded a 68 to make things interesting for a while, but when Kyle came in with an even par 70, he has his second victory and a 2-stroke victory. Caravia finished in second place with Austin Pearl and Teddy Jones three back in third. Berkmeyer finished fourth. Kyle redshirted the 2015 season at K-State, looking for a bright 2016.
ADAM LONG The Francis Howell graduate was having a terrific summer. He qualified for the US Amateur and had made match play at the North and South. At Duke, he had been third on the team with a 72.7 stroke average. He arrived at Norwood primed for a run at the title. Justin Bardgett took the 36 hole lead with a round of 70, 1-under par, a stroke ahead of Skip Berkmeyer, who held the opening round lead with a 67, and two up on Long. Adam finished his round at 1-under par for a 211 total. He then sat near the 18th green and waited to see how Bardgett and Berkmeyer would fare. Berkmeyer had a birdie putt of 13-feet which looked like it was going to drop before it caught the lip and spun away. Bardgett’s 22-foot chip also had a chance to fall into the cup, but it too, caught the edge and rolled to a stop. After graduation from Duke, Long has played the Canadian PGA Tour, the Web.com tour and the Latin America Tour. Through 15 events in 2015 on the Web.com tour, he ranks 37th, with over $104k in earnings. The Metropolitan

GOLF TRIVIA LET’S CONTINUE WITH SOME ADDITIONAL TRIVIA... 1. Which current St. Louis area golf professional was a 3-time All-American at Oklahoma, won the Texas High School Championship, and defeated Tiger Woods in a Junior and a Collegiate event? 2. The St. Louis area has hosted eighteen USGA championships from 1921 to 2014. Not counting the recent Men’s and Women’s 4-ball events, now in their second year, there are only five USGA championships that have not been held in the area. Can you name them? 3. The earliest events hosted in the area were amateur competitions. However, in 1908, the first Open professional event was held at Normandie GC. Which Open was it? Bonus: Who was the winner? 4. Who is the only women amateur to have won the US Women’s Open? 5. Most golfers know that Francis Ouimet was the first amateur to win the US Open. Who was the last amateur to accomplish that feat? 6. In 1986, at the USGA Mid-Amateur Championship at Annandale GC in Mississippi, St. Clair’s Mark Boyajian accomplished a first in a USGA championship. What was his record? 7. In 1987, at the USGA Mid-Amateur Championship at Brook Hollow CC in Dallas, Texas, Don Bliss set a record for the Mid-Am that has yet to be broken or tied. What is that record? 8. In 1922, steel shafts in golf clubs first came onto the scene. However, in 1923, the USGA banned them for use in USGA championships. When did the USGA approve steel shafts for use in their championships? 9. Though approved for use by the USGA by 1930, did Bobby Jones win any of his USGA championships with steel shafts? 10. For years, golfers who traveled to play in the British Open had the option to play the smaller British ball, which was 1.62” compared to the 1.68” ball approved by the USGA for play. In what year did the R&A outlaw the “small ball” for use in the British Open? 11. In 1961, Karsten Solheim, who was making putters one at a time in his garage, made his first set of PING irons. What did he call them and why? 12. The career “Grand Slam” is a goal of every professional golfer. It involves winning the Masters, US Open, British Open and the PGA. How many golfers have accomplished this and who are they? 13. For a time, there was no rule covering how many clubs a golfer could have in his or her bag. Some players were known to carry over 20 clubs. In what year did the USGA implement the 14-club rule? 14. The 1955 Walker Cup Matches were held over the links of St. Andrews. The US Team traveled to Scotland by ship, the last team to do so. A St. Louisan was on that team, playing in his second Walker Cup. Who was this Walker Cup player? 15. In 1922, the first US Publinks Championship was played at Inverness CC in Toledo, Ohio. A young, 19-yearold Forest Park player entered and won the championship. Who was this player? ST. LOUIS GOLF HISTORY 1999 US MID-AMATEUR OLD WARSON CC
Having not hosted a significant national event in nearly 25 years, it came as a surprise to most when it was announced in 1996 that Old Warson would be the site for the 1999 US Mid-Amateur Championship, beating out 16 other clubs for the honor. Spearheaded by club president Rich Millman, the new breed of members were looking to showcase their course. It was planned for the Missouri Bluffs course to serve as a second qualifying site, however, when it came time for the event, Bellerive was given the nod instead. Much to the delight of the Old Warson members, their course played about a stroke higher. Some very talented players arrived to compete for the championship, including: Danny Yates, Tom McKinght, John Harris, Trip Kuehne, Danny Green, Kemp Richardson, David Eger, Tim Jackson, Tim Hogarth, Spider Miller, Buddy Marucci, Mitch Voges, Jerry Courville and Buddy Alexander. Local players included Scott Thomas, David Estes, Don Bliss, Scott Edwards and Mark Norman. The 64 qualifiers for match play needed to shoot 151 or better. Twenty-two players were on that number for the playoff for the final twelve spots. Medalist Ed Brooks, with rounds of 70-69, won his first round match before falling in round two. Other notables failing to advance included Scott Thomas, Richardson, Jackson, Hogarth and Kuehne. Two of the best mid-amateurs continued to advance, Danny Green and Jerry Courville. Tom McKinght, who had recently lost in the finals of the US Amateur, finally bowed out in round three. With Courville and Green each winning their semifinal match, the finals was set. Green, from Jackson, Tennessee and Courville, from Connecticut, were both at the top of their game. It would be the match everyone waited to see. Courville had won the title in 1995 and was a past Walker Cup selection. There were the typical local and state titles also on their resumes. The 42-year-old Green played the type of grinding golf needed to win a national championship. He never let Courville sieze an opening, finally closing the door on the seventeenth with a birdie two, claiming a 2&1 victory and his invitation to the 2000 Masters.

US SENIOR WOMEN’S QUALIFYING TINA JONES POSTS AN 81 TO EARN MEDAL On Thursday, August 27, 11 ladies arrived at Bellerive vying for a spot in the 2015 US Senior Women’s Amateur at Hillwood Country Club in Nashville, Tennessee, September 26-October 1, 2015. The course was set at 5,703 yards and played to a par 72. Tina Jones started strong, going out in 39, her only real trouble coming at the par 4 fifth hole where she took a double bogey. Her play on the back was likewise, right around par for most of the holes, save for a 4-over par seven she scored on the tough par 3 thirteenth. Nevertheless, her inward total of 42 gave her an 81, good for the medal. This is Tina’s second trip to the US Senior Women’s Championship as she also qualified in 2009. With two spots available, two players, Julie Carmichael of Plainfield, Indiana, and Ginny Orthwein of St. Louis Country Club, were tied with 84’s. They returned to the 18th tee for the playoff to determine the second qualifier. Julie found the fairway and Tina Jones her approach left her in a good position for par. Meanwhile, Ginny found the bunker and took an extra shot to reach the green. Her final score of six, against Carmichael’s four, gave the Indiana player the second qualifying spot. Players and their scores were as follows: Tina Jones Julie Carmichael Ginny Orthwein Mary Ann Beattie Janet Weber Jackie Rosen

WOMEN’S GOLF IN THE AREA: A TIMELINE Most area golfers are aware that the LPGA held events at Forest Hills and Fox Run from 1994-2001. However, the LPGA came to St. Louis first in the mid-1950s, when events were played at Glen Echo and Norwood Hills. In those early years, the events consisted of a mix of professionals and amateurs as there were not sufficient pros to fill the fields. This enabled local players to get a real sense of the talent of these players. The likes of Barb Berkmeyer, Doris Phillips, and others, were recognized as low amateur at these events. Below is a list of all events - amateur and pro - featuring the ladies. 1908 1922 1925 1931 1939 1940 1954 1955 1956 1964 1965 1966 1967 1968 1969

RULES ARTICLE (Continued from page 3)
with the second ball to count if played by the Rules and the Committee subsequently declares the area as ground under repair. Uncertainty About A Rule A player’s shot deeply embeds in the front face of a green-side bunker. He wants to declare the ball unplayable and drop it back in the bunker on a line from the hole through the point where the ball lay embedded (Rule 28b). His fellow competitor insists that, no, he must drop the ball within two club lengths of where it lay embedded (Rule 28c). The player settles the debate by announcing he will finish the hole with two balls played both ways, selecting to score with his version. Questionable Ruling There are rare instances when a player may dispute an official’s ruling (e.g., place to play from) and either wish to play a second ball or perhaps have the official radio another official for a second opinion. The official, if given authority by the Committee to make a final decision (Rule 34-2), doesn’t have to consent if he is sure of his ruling or if play of a second ball would unduly delay play, but will almost always oblige the player. Self-Protection Matt Kuchar (2014 US Open; Pinehurst No. 2; 2nd round, 6th hole, 2-ft putt) didn’t address his putt but
thought the ball moved slightly. He and a Rules official weren’t sure if Kuchar had caused the ball to move, so decided that he should play two balls – one from where the ball lay and another from where the ball would have been replaced – selecting to score with the ball played as it lay. Kuchar made both putts. The Committee later determined that he had not caused his ball to move and incurred no penalty. Kuchar had protected himself either way the Committee ruled (and avoided the possibility of a twostroke penalty for playing from a wrong place). Second Ball in Rule 20-7 (Play From Wrong Place) Separately, play of a second ball is also referenced in Rule 20-7. It, too, applies just to stroke play. “If a competitor becomes aware that he has played from a wrong place and believes that he may have committed a serious breach, he must, before making a stroke from the next teeing ground, play out the hole with a second ball played in accordance with the Rules. If the hole being played is the last hole of the round, he must declare before leaving the putting green that he will play out the hole with a second ball played in accordance with the Rules.” Again, BEFORE returning his score card, the player MUST report to an official the facts related to playing the second ball, or risk disqualification. The Committee will determine if a serious breach was committed and which ball will count. John Thorman
ON TOUR - SCOTT LANGLEY Reading Scott Langley’s profile will immediately raise some eyebrows. Most are aware that he won the individual title at the 2010 NCAA Championships. Also as an amateur, he won the 2008 and 2009 Metropolitan Open, as well as the 2010 Match Play title. He also happens to be the first alum of the First Tee Program to make it to the PGA Tour! Currently, Scott is ranked 237th in the OWGR and his FedEx Cup ranking is 127, just outside the 125 needed to qualify for the FecEx Cup Playoffs. He played in 28 events during this season, making the cut in 19 and finishing in the top 25 on six occasions. He has made over $638k in official money. His best finish was a tie for 13th at the Greenbrier Classic.

WHERE HAVE THEY GONE...THE AREA’S LOST COURSES ST. CHARLES GC - 1956-2004 It began as a rumor in the spring of 2002. The family that owned the St. Charles Golf Course was considering selling the 180 acre property. The sale of St. Andrews GC, also in 2002, meant that if St. Charles were to close, there would be no public golf courses in St. Charles. Quickly, local officials formed a golf committee to determine what could be done. However, they quickly learned that the rumors were not only true, but that a deal for $22 million was being worked out with the Jones Co., a local developer. The price was significantly greater than what the city could afford. For a time, they considered the development of a municipal facility near Highway 370, but that never materialized. It appeared that like St. Andrews, St. Charles Golf Course would be lost to development. By late 2003, it was gone. However, gone does not mean forgotten! Who can forget waiting for the stoplight at the top of the hill on #11 to turn green in order for players to hit their tee shots over the hill? The 27-holes of St. Charles GC in the spring of 2003. Clubhouse is Or stepping to the first tee on an early weekend tee time, at left edge with the 9-hole course running along the left side and with waiting foursomes surrounding the tee, waiting their the 18-hole course in the middle and to the right. Within a year, turn to reach the green, or re-load after landing in the pond! bulldozers would begin leveling the land for homesites. For years, St. Louis county golfers made the weekly trek across the Blanchette Bridge to Highway 94, turning onto winding Friedens Road, delivering you to the clubhouse. Today, with the new Page Avenue extension, it would be an easy commute from west county, but back in the 1970s-90s, it was quite a trip. Designed by Al Linkogel, the former greenkeeper at Westwood turned nurseryman/designer, the course was a par 68 at 5,317 yards. The 9 hole course, added in 1963, was a par 36, just over 3,100 yards and was considered by many to be the best nine holes on the ground. Still, players from across the region traveled to St. Charles each week to play; such was the state of public golf in the area. The no-frills lower level of the clubhouse offered the basics; a drink, hot dog and some good conversation. The upstairs - no spikes, please - was reserved mainly for parties and events. However, the bar saw plenty of action. Oh yes, those were the days!
