USGA Events Shawn Jasper (above) posted rounds of 70-71-74 for a 215 total, edging Ryan Eckelkamp by two shots and winning his first Metropolitan Amateur title. Rounding out the top 10 were: Chad Niezing and Parker Goldman (218). Jimmy Siegfried, Tony Gumper and Skip Berkmeyer (219), Andrew Pranger (220), Brad Carpenter (221) and Alex Ciaramitaro (222). Jasper’s opening round of 1-under par 70 on Thursday might have been good enough for the lead had it not been for an exceptional round of 65 by Siegfried, especially in light of the Continued on page 4. Greetings everyone! Here we are the end of August approaching the end of another season; unbelievable really. We have been extremely fortunate with great weather this month so hopefully everyone has enjoyed lots of rounds of golf. Curt Rohe
Our flagship championship took place at Executive Director Norwood Hills Country Club and Shawn Jasper came away with the title on a very tough track. Norwood was in impeccable condition and with the added length the new tees brought, it made for a formidable test to identify our champion. Congratulations to Shawn and thank you Norwood Hills for continuing to be a supporter of amateur golf in this region. One event that gets lost in the season is our Metropolitan Cup Championship, the season long inter-club matches that are now into the Playoffs. Forty teams participated this year with 14 of them moving into the playoffs. First round of playoffs are wrapping up and the updated bracket can be found later in the newsletter. We are excited to have the Semi-final and Final matches set to play on September 29 at Fox Run Golf Club this season. We will be sure and update the results from the Metro Cup in the September/October issue. I wanted to take a moment to say thank you to Jake Weis and Adrian Brown who were two of our Boatwright Interns this summer. Jake spent his time with us in St. Louis while Adrian was in the SIGA office down in Carterville, IL. Both performed exceptionally this summer in their respective areas and were a great fit to the team. Weis is back in school at Missouri State and Brown is at McKendree College. So, with this we wrap up our final monthly issue as we go back to bi-monthly newsletters until next spring. I continued to be amazed at the comments I get from our members (you) who read and enjoy The Metropolitan! Thank you for reading and let’s enjoy some great fall weather and golfing as we head down the stretch of 2017.

the ball as it lies; 2) Go back to the teeing ground under stroke & distance (R27, 1-penalty stroke); or 3) “flagline” relief as described above. “Flagline” relief would not provide the player a clear shot to the green, and he did not want to incur a penalty for stroke & distance. The right-handed player chose to use the back side of his putter in a left-handed stance to advance the ball toward the fairway. He managed to get it into the rough with a clear path to the green.
Rules of Golf Corner Difficult Situations! Rules povide options to players in Difficult Situations. Here are three situations that occurred in recent tournaments. In each of them, the players needed to consider what options were available to them BEFORE picking up their balls without prior thought.
3. Ball at Rest Among Growing Mushrooms. Only one of the white objects in the photo is the golf ball. It is at rest in between mushrooms. One mushroom is in front of the ball on its line of play. Two of the mushrooms are behind the ball, with one of them growing and one of them broken off and lying on the ground. In this situation, the player must guard against improving his line of play. He would be in breach of R13-2 (2-stroke penalty) if he broke off the growing mushroom caps with practice swings. However, the player may break the mushroom behind the ball on his back swing if the stroke is completed, and he may break the mushroom in front of the ball with a forward motion of the club with intent to strike the ball. The player may NOT remove the growing mushrooms prior to making his stroke, nor ask another person to do so. The broken mushroom cap (unattached) is a loose impediment that may be removed prior to the stroke, provided the ball is not moved. If any of the growing mushrooms remain intact after a stroke that advances the ball, the player may then knock down the mushrooms as a courtesy to other players. If a mushroom is growing on a player’s line of putt, the player would be justified in discontinuing play and requesting the Committee to remove the mushroom. If such an abnormal condition is a recurring problem on a course, the Committee should make a Local Rule to the effect that mushrooms on the putting green are to be treated as ground under repair. (See D16-1a/15)
1. Ball Under Pine Tree (with low hanging limbs); Ball in Severe Rut. The direction of play in this situation is 90 degrees to the right. The options available were: 1) Play the ball as it lies; 2) Go back to the teeing ground under stroke & distance (R27, 1-penalty stroke); or 3) take an unplayable lie and either drop the ball no closer to the hole within 2 club lengths of the ball (R28c, 1-penalty stroke), or take “flagline” relief (R28b, 1-penalty stroke) and go back on a straight line drawn from the hole to behind the ball as far back as desired and drop the ball directly on the line. Much to my surprise the player elected to play it as it lies and made an excellent stroke with the ball staying under the limbs and advancing to the fairway and slightly closer to the hole. 2. Ball from Tee Passes Through Tree, Strikes Ground and Rolls Backwards Against Tree Trunk. This photo was taken facing in the direction of the teeing ground. The ball passed through the limbs, striking the ground just beyond the bottom left corner of the photo, then spun back and rolled up against the trunk slightly behind its front edge. The options considered by the player were: 1) Play

Metropolitan Amateur Championship scores posted by some of the area’s best payers. The reason: Norwood Hills’ West course was not only playing long, it had been lengthened in recent years, but the quick sloping greens and the gusty winds played havoc with shots all day. On Friday, the situation continued as the scored continued to rise as the blustery north winds affected shots across the course. Siegfried found the going very different from his first round as he came in at 7-over par for his round, falling two shots behind Jasper’s even par round. Sam Migdal posted a 1-under round, as did Eckelkamp and Tony Gumper, as they kept Jasper in reach. However, they all knew they needed to go low on Saturday to catch him. Eckelkamp did his best, posting a 1-under par 70, keeping things tight. However, beginning the day six shots back only enabled him to close within two before he ran out of holes. For Jasper, who finished second back in 2003, victory was a long time coming; making it that much sweeter. Now, with his Metropolitan Open victories (2010 and 2011) and his MAGA Match Play title in 2005, he has completed the “Grand Slam” of Metropolitan events.

Franklin County’s Brad Carpenter came in at 221, good for ninth position.

Jimmy Siegfried’s Thursday round of 65 was exceptional given the conditions

USGA Senior Men’s & Women’s Qualifying Greenbriar Hills CC • August 7, 2017 Taking advantage of Greenbriar’s hospitality, both the Senior Men and Senior Women arrived at the club on Monday to attempt to qualify for their respective Senior Amateur Championships. With 10 women registered, they hit the tee at 7:30 am, followed by the 38 male competitors beginning at 8:30 am.
Senior Women’s Amateur Qualifying
With only two area players on the sheet, the players came from far and wide - including Guatemala - in their attempt to qualify. In the end, Beatriz Arenas, from Guatemala, and Rosalie Kubesheski, from Dubuque, Iowa, earned the two qualifying positions, with Arenas capturing the medal was a round of 81 with Kubesheski shooting an 83. Third spot, and first alternate, went to Pam Simpson (84) of Kansas City, with Robin Webb (85) taking second alternate.

Senior Men’s Amateur Qualifying A very competitive field was in play. Andy Front, Scott Edwards and Mark Assenspach, all qualifiers in 2016, were in the field, along with familiar names; Holtgrieve, Dunn, Jeff Johnson, Highlander, Brown, Osborne, Amos and David Johnson. Terrance Flynn, playing in the second group, posted an early round of 73, followed quickly by Brown and Spaulding with 74s. However, the 72 posted by Fogarty would hold up for the Medal. When Allenspach handed in his 74, most felt it would be a playoff for the alternate; that is until Scott Thomas, playing in the last group, turned in a 73. Soon, Flynn and Thomas headed to the first tee to decide the second qualifier. Thomas hit the green in two, but his ball rolled just into the rough at the rear. Meanwhile, Flynn had one of the moments we all regret as the ball came off his hosel, carooming to the right. He played his third to the green, but missed his par putt. Thomas chipped from the back edge and then rolled in his par to take the qualifying spot, with Flynn the first alternate. In the playoff for the second alternate, a bogey by Allenspach enabled Spaulding to be in line should players who qualified be unable to compete. The Metropolitan

St. Louis Golf History
-1940 Ladies Trans-Miss Championship-
Betty Jameson in 1940
Patty Berg
In the days before there were dozens of women’s collegiate teams and events for ladies, the USGA’s Women’s Amateur and the Trans-Mississippi were among the top events. The 1940 T-M was held at Glen Echo and featured the best women amateurs of the day, including Betty Jameson, Patty Berg, Marion Miley, Kay Pearson, Pyllis Otto and Lucille Robinson Mann. Jameson and Berg would be among the founders of the LPGA and Mann, Miley, Otto and Pearson would win many amateur titles over their careers. The graceful Jameson, had won the 1939 and 1940 US Women’s Amateur and would later win the 1947 US Women’s Open, was 21 in 1940. She would face another 21-year old, the gritty Patty Berg in the finals. Berg, like Jameson, would win the US Women’s Open, with Berg taking the very first one in 1946. Jameson defeated two St. Louisans in the first and second rounds, Mrs. Bryan Winter and Georgia Dexheimer, while Berg defeated Audrey Faust Wallace of St. Louis CC in her second round match. In the quarterfinals, Jameson downed Miley 3&1, with Berg taking the better of Mrs. David Sterrett 4&3. Jameson had an easier time in the semifinals, defeating Otto 5&4, while Berg took 20 holes to eliminate Robinson-Mann. The final proved to be a test of match play stamina as both players had won numerous titles over the previous 4-5 seasons. Even though Berg was the defending champion, Jameson was the clear favorite. The match was close for all 36 holes, with never more than a 2up lead until the end. With women’s par at 77, Berg shot 74 in the morning round, including six birdies, while Jameson posted a 75. However, the tide turned in the afternoon when Jamesson shot a new course record 71, with nine birdies, while Berg managed another 74. In an interview with Jameson in 2000, she described the final hole to the author. “We approached the 16th green. I was on in two while Patty had difficulty off the tee and with her approach, finally getting on in three. We looked at each other knowing that if I two-putted the tournament was over. Patty two putted, as did I, and the title was mine. I remember looking up and seeing birds flying around a birdhouse behind the green. Funny how you remember things like that 60-years later.” Jameson passed away in 2009 at the age of 89, while Berg died in 2006 at the age of 88.

A three-way tie for medalist at 2-under par attested to the quality play as 71 players attempted to qualify for the US Mid-Amateur at Meadowbrook CC. Playing on his home course, Bryan Bohme led a group of four into qualifying, including Patrick Bader, who will be playing in his first USGA event, along with Andrew Pranger of Glen Echo. Missouri Golf Association Executive Director, Scott Hovis, rounded out the qualifiers when he posted a 1-under 71. An 8-hole playoff was needed to determine the two players earning alternate spots.

Putting Woes? This just might just be an option for you! At the Metropolitan Senior at Westborough, we came across former Champion of Champions winner Tim Begley, who offered a unique solution for players struggling with their putting: try putting with your DRIVER. Yes, that’s exactly what he did over the two day event, and he never three-putted on Westborough’s slick, demanding greens. As a former hockey player, Begley had no issues standing further from the ball than is normally taught and when he demonstrated his technique for us on the practice green he made nearly 8 out of 10 from six feet. “It all started because, like a lot of players, I got the yips,” said Begley. “For me, I just couldn’t take the putter back. I was terrified. After trying nearly everything one day I decided to use my driver. I surprised myself how easy I found it, and how well I was doing.” Begley knows that this might not be for everyone, but for him it works very well. “I might look at making the grip a little larger, but that would be about it.” he said. Tim is currently the boys and girls golf coach at John Burroughs School.

Southern Illinois Golf Association News “SIGA News” “Down South with the SIGA” GEARY DENISTON For The Southern CARBONDALE — Overcoming a car accident on Friday and three double-bogeys on Saturday, Brady Dixon from Mounds pulled out a two-stroke victory in his first appearance at the 27-hole Bill Koeneman Memorial Player’s Cup hosted by Hickory Ridge Golf Course. “I was pretty happy to wake up and not be more sore than I thought I was going to be this morning,” Dixon said. “I was taking my dad to a doctor’s appointment when we got into the accident and totaled my car. So I spent yesterday afternoon at the hospital and the radiologist instead of getting ready to play today.” Dixon, who is 21 and will be entering his senior year at SIU-Edwardsville, held off Brendan Lewis from Marion and Wiatt Jennings from Woodlawn, to add his name to the long list of distinguished golfers on the towering trophy. “Today the game plan was to stay patient,” Dixon said. “I knew when I made my first double on 10 I had a good stretch of holes coming up because the wind had shifted, making 11 through 14 downwind. So if I hit good tee shots, I was going to have good opportunities.” Dixon shot an even-par 72 after the first 18 holes and finished with a 38 on the second back nine to finish with a two-over par 110 to take home the first place prize of $115. Jennings and Lewis split $175 and four-time champion Tom Portner finished fourth five-strokes behind to take home $50. Dixon started on hole 18 with a par and then suffering a single bogey on hole one before sinking two birdies on holes 2 and 6 to make the turn at one-under. “After a good par I pulled it left in the trees and needed to two shots to get it out, and then got it up-anddown from 100 yards,” Dixon said. “I then made two good birdies.” Dixon suffered his first bogey on hole 10, but got those strokes back with a birdie on 12 and another one on 15. After a bogey on 17, he was sitting at even par going into the final nine holes, with a one-stroke lead over Lewis, two ahead of Jennings and six ahead of Portner. “Ten wasn’t a tee-shot that set up to me,” Dixon said. “I wasn’t quite sure how to play it, so I tried to hit a driving iron off the tee and pulled it and hit it in the hazard.” Dixon opened the final nine in a hole, with a double bogey on 18. He recovered to pull back to even par with birdies on 11 and 14, but a third-double bogey on 16 dropped him back to two-over. “Sixteen was a tough hole into the wind in the afternoon,” Dixon said. “I hit my tee shot a little left and it took a big hop and ended up in the hazard. My second shot flew a little and didn’t get it up-and-down.” Jennings finished with bogeys on 12, 15 and 17 and birdies on 11 and 18. Lewis closed out with a double bogey on 10, singles bogeys on 11 and 15 and a birdie on 14. Carbondale native Stan Curtis won his second Senior Division title by one stroke over Judson Brewer from Carbondale and Chester native Cliff Creason. Jay Batson from Herrin finished fourth two strokes back. Curtis opened on hole 15 with a birdie and finished his first 18 holes at one-over par 73, tied with Creason and holding a one-stroke lead over Brewer and Batson. He began his last nine holes with another birdie on 15 and closed out at even par to finish with a one-over 109. Creason finished at one-over to drop out of the tie while Brewer closed out even to remain one back. Batson was also one over to drop another stroke back.

Southern Illinois Golf Association News “I won my first one maybe five or six years ago,” Curtis said. “I’m happy because I haven’t played very much golf this summer, but I’m also unhappy with some of the bogeys I made, because some of them were from the middle of the fairway 115 yards where bogeys should never come from, but that’s golf. However, for playing 27 holes, I only hit two bad shots, so at the end of the day I’m happy.”

The Distance Debate: Another perspective With the scores being shot recently adding fuel to the debate over distance - a 62 at the British Open and a 63 at the US Open - former Sports Illustrated golf writer Gary Van Sickle decided to add his input to the debate. Recognizing that the USGA and R&A have previously addressed the distance issue through the limits placed on equipment - driver head sizes, COR, etc. - he suggested looking at the other variable in the equation; one that has been championed for years by Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Hale Irwin and others. The ball! However, rather than attack this from just one front - one ball for everyone - he suggests a bifurcation approach (a fancy term for splitting something into two parts); that is, have one set of ball specifications played by professionals and another group for balls played by amateurs. He noted that this approach is not without precedent. For those too young to remember, for decades, the British Open was played with a smaller ball, forcing American golfers to adjust to it to compete. He points to how this is also used in baseball with the majors using wooden bats and most amateur teams using aluminum. (left) the 1.68” diameter modern ball and the 1.62” British ball Van Sickle - whose son by the way, was on the winning Pennsylvania team at the Men’s State Team championship at the CC of St. Albans in 2009 - knows that taking on the ball manufacturers (read Titelist) is not something the USGA or R&A are anxious to undertake. However, with players now hitting 300-yard 3-woods, as Brooks Koepka did at the 2016 for much of his round at Erin Hills, he believes that it may be time to think about reigning it in.
As an amateur golfer himself, he knows that for the average golfer, we’ll never approach the distances the pros do, so he believes that this will have no impact on this group. The article is an interesting read and provides another point of view on this topic. You can read the entire article by clicking HERE.
A Leg Up on Father Time: Winning Through The Years Jim Holtgrieve’s win in the Metropolitan Senior at Westborough this month, 10-years after his first win in this event in 2007, got us thinking about longevity in golf. A number of players have continued winning over many years, a mark of their talent. However, winning after a gap of several years in the same event is unique. What are some other “gap-wins” that have taken place within the area? Jeff Johnson’s win in the Men’s District Jim Jackson event, the first coming in 1987 and his second in 2006, would certainly rank high. Ellen Port winning the US Women’s Mid-Am in 2000 and then her fourth in 2011 is also remarkable. Legendary Jim Jackson won the 1959 Missouri Amateur and picked up his next victory - his fourth - in the event 17-years later in 1976. In much the same era, Bob Cochran won the 1940 Missouri Amateur with his second (also of four) coming in 1958. Jackson and Cochran each won events from the 1930s into the 1980s, but that’s for another discussion! If you know of others who should belong on our “gap-win” list, please let us know. In future reviews along these lines, we’ll look at back-to-back winners, along with those who won over long periods of time.
