MAGA AMATEUR Jones survives six-hole playoff to capture the 24th Metropolitan Amateur. Ted Jones came into the MAGA Amateur a little disappointed with his season. He’d been in contention during several events but had yet to taste victory. He left the 18th green at Westwood on Saturday as the newest champion. Seems like the season is ending on a high note!

Wow, what a month for the MAGA…and wow, here we are going into August! July, as always, was our busiest month of the season. The 9th Open was a huge success with a remarkable ending and the 24th Amateur at Westwood was fantastic with an exciting conclusion.

Curt Rohe Executive Director

First, the Open at St. Albans went off without a hitch, I must congratulate Chris Brant on his first professional victory and big payday. The Country Club of St. Albans really got behind the championship which made the 9th edition the best in its brief history. What a fun week and already looking forward to the 10th in 2015! I’m going to use WOW again, because that is the best explanation to the end of the 24th Amateur at Westwood CC! The ebb and flow of the final 9 holes was incredible… then to top it off, we had the longest playoff in championship history; what a week. I must thank the Westwood CC membership and staff for their cooperation and contribution in conducting our 24th Amateur. To Ted Jones, congratulations on adding your name to the long list of great amateur on the Jim Tom Blair Trophy! The Amateur is the pinnacle of our season; the event MAGA hangs our hat on and sets us apart from the rest! Personally, it is the event I am most proud of on our schedule. Each year our goal is to make the Amateur better than the last and I feel we did that again in 2014. Thank you to our Rules Committee, to Westwood, the scoring volunteers and the field of 150 players who took part in making this championship the most coveted amateur title in our region! With that being said, the season is certainly not over. August is also a busy month with our Senior Championship and three USGA qualifying rounds. As always, a special thanks to our individual MAGA members - those of you who are reading this newsletter - for your support of the MAGA. As always, feel free to reach out to me at curt@metga.org.

RULES OF GOLF CORNER (Continued) On the putting green a competitor must hole out the putt under penalty, while a player may concede a putt to his opponent in match play.

Visit us on FACEBOOK Or for the Latest Updates...

If a competitor moves a fellow competitor’s ball in play there is no penalty and the ball is replaced. If a player moves an opponent’s ball in play the player incurs a one stroke penalty and the ball is replaced. On the putting green if a competitor hits a fellow competitor’s ball with his putted ball it is a two-stroke penalty, though if a player hits his opponent’s ball with his putted ball it is no penalty and the ball is played from where it comes to rest. When doubtful of your play of the ball in stroke play you can invoke Rule 3-3 and play a second ball. If there is a question in match play you must decide with your opponent and if there is a disagreement, you need to make a claim. You cannot invoke Rule 33 when playing a match. Decision 3-3/9 is a reference for this. Refer to rule 3-3 for stroke play and 2-5 for match play to learn the proper procedure when invoking these two rules. They are very specific and need to be followed. As you can see there are significant differences with the rules depending on which format you are playing. The rules of golf are in place to help play. It is the players responsibility to know the rules. Knowledge of the rules is a great asset in the play of the game.

At TWITTER

RULES OF GOLF CORNER Rules Differences: Match Play vs. Stroke Play Most of the golf I play is done in stroke play format, though I have been afforded the opportunity to play in match play events as well. It is certainly a fun game when played on a hole by hole basis as opposed to the total score basis in stroke play. A big number on a hole in match play does not put you out of the competition as it is just one hole lost. However, if you get the opportunity to play this format I recommend you brush up on Rule 2, which is dedicated to match play. While a few of the differences are noted below, you can learn more by going to your rule book, decisions book or the USGA web site. For example, players in a stroke play competition are competitors or fellow competitors, while in match play they are players and opponents. So when reading a rule or decision if the word competitor is mentioned you know it is dealing with stroke play and if you see the word opponent, it is match play. In stroke play many penalties have two strokes added to the score for the hole, while in match play MOST of those two strokes penalties are loss of hole penalties.

Contributed by Alice Wohlgemuth MAGA Rules Committee. The Rules of Golf Corner will feature a member of our Rules Committee.

In starting the play of the hole in stroke play, if a competitor plays from outside the teeing ground there is a two stroke penalty and the competitor must correct by playing inside the teeing ground. In match play, if a player or opponent plays from outside the teeing ground there is no penalty but the stroke can be recalled before another stroke is made and be replayed. In stroke play, during the play of the hole there is no penalty to a competitor for playing out of turn. However, if an opponent plays out of turn the player can recall the stroke.

MAGA OPEN Brant edges Thompson in playoff for win. Brant 3-4-4-5=16 (4-4); Thompson 4-4-4-4=16 (4-6). Chris Brant arrived at St. Albans for the third and final round of the 9th Metropolitan Open Championship three shots behind the leaders, Jace Long, Alex Cusumano and Chris Thompson. However, there was a comfort factor to his round as he was playing with his Hawkeye roommate Chris Brant, the 2014 Metropolitan and golf teammate Open champion. Barrett Kelpin. As they joked on the tee before they began, it was evident that there was a relaxed atmosphere. Perhaps it was that comfort level that enabled Brant to post a 67 and make up the difference as he waited for the final two groups to complete their rounds to see if his score would be good enough. As it turned out, it was just enough! Brant’s 3-under round saw him go 1-under on the front, with three birdies on the back nine - against a lone bogey - for his round. Co-leader Thompson was off to a terrific start, going three under on the front nine. However, three bogeys on the back - at #11, 15 and 17 - would end up costing him the title as he was locked into a playoff. Meanwhile, Cusumano and Long both struggled to over-par rounds. Long lost his magic following his 66 in the second round as two bogeys and a double bogey on the front and a double on the tenth left him four over for his round as he holed out on the eighteenth green. Cusumano, who has been having a terrific season, was 2-over on the front and despite two birdies on the back - it was a double bogey on the thirteenth that left him two strokes out of the playoff. University of Illinois coach Mike Small, posted a 2under round to finish in fifth place, while Chad Saladin of Oak Meadow GC shot level par to finish in third position. In the playoff, Brant had it won until a bogey on the fourth playoff hole left he and Thompson even once again. Two additional holes were needed with Thompson double bogeying the second making Brant’s par good for the victory. The Metropolitan

U.S. AMATEUR QUALIFYING Migdal fires a 4-under round for medalist honors at Jeff City CC. Comstock and McKinney earn final spots. Joe Migdal posted two rounds of 69 to earn a spot in the U.S. Amateur, to be held August 11-17 at Atlanta Athletic Club. Four other players - Jack Comstock, Tanner McKinney, Andy Spencer and Wilson Sundvold - each completed their rounds at even par for the day. With only two additional spots available, the four set U.S. Amateur qualifying medalist Joe Migdal out just before 8pm to see who would be making plans for Atlanta. With the sun dropping below the horizon, the final two spots were earned by Comstock and McKinney.

JUNIOR AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP (continued from page 1)

Normandie Golf Course. The former private club was always considered a “player’s course” and championships earned on its links were well earned. In fact, the first area major, the 1908 Western Open was played at Normandie and won by four-time U.S. Open champion Willie Anderson. Chris Ferris, the 2014 Boys Junior champion, became the first backto-back titleholder of the event in its 15-year history. The leader after the first day by two shots over Drew Lilly of St. Louis CC, the Lindbrgh HS golfer posted his second consecutive even-par 71 to edge Matthew McCarthy of Far Oaks GC by six shots. Lilly was third at 149. In the girls championship, Momo Kikuchi, who plays out of The Quarry at Crystal Springs, was the first day leader with a 79, followed by Abby Schroeder of Forest Hills with an 81 and Sophia Roth at 84. Rebecca Roth was a shot back at 85, while Michelle Fan came in with an 88. However, Schroeder cam roaring back on Tuesday with a solid 73 to edge Kikuchi by a stroke, despite her 76. Sophia Roth finished third at 162. In the Boys 14-15 division, Max Kreikemeier of Forest Hills shot rounds of 78 and 84 to take the title. Steve Wendling of Westborough finished second at 174 (86-88), while Zach O’Toole finished third at 179 (89-90). Joseph Conroy finished at 181 while Nathaniel Conroy posted a 194. (Photos on page 19)

ST. LOUIS GOLF HISTORY Before the 2008 BMW at Bellerive, formerly the Western Open (but then part of the FedEx Cup rotation), the last regular PGA events in the area were two events held at Norwood Hills in 1972 and 1973. The 1972 event was dubbed the St. Louis Golf Classic. Held in midSeptember, a good field arrived at Norwood looking to capture the $30,000 first prize. Deane Beman took the first round lead with a 64, followed by Lee Trevino (65), Chuck Thorpe (66) and a group of six, including Bob Goalby and Chi Chi Rodriguez at 67. Going into the final round, Beman maintained his one-shot lead over Trevino, with Goalby 3-back. However, when Trevino came in at even par 70, and Beman posted a 72, Trevino earned a one-shot win. The 1973 event, held July 16-22, upped the purse to $210,000 with Children’s Hospital the tournament beneficiary. Trevino looked to defend but it was Goalby, with a 65 in his opening round, who was the co-leader with Rick Massengale. Gene Littler, who had just returned to the tour after a bout with cancer, was the sentimental favorite and his 66 left him in good position. When Littler followed that with another 66 in round two, he lead by one over Trevino, who posted a 64 in his second round. At the end of the third round, Trevino was at 199, Littler and Goalby at 200, with Bruce Crampton at 202. However, it was Littler’s second consecutive 68, for a 268 total, that would earn him the victory. Trevino limped in with a 2-over 72 while Goalby could do no better than a 71. Meanwhile, Cramption shot a 67 to overtake Trevino for second place. Littler left St. Louis $42,000 richer.
