Hello MAGA members! What a great month of June with several MAGA events and the 38th Curtis Cup Match! I hope you took advantage of the opportunity to visit St. Louis Country Club and experience the Curtis Cup, it was a remarkable Curt Rohe week. I had the pleasure of Executive Director serving on the Rules Committee and walking, as forward observer, for a match each day…it was a great experience. The talent of those 16 young women was phenomenal and a treat to witness first hand. We conducted the final US Amateur Public Links Qualifying on June 14-15 at Aberdeen Golf Club. This will be the 89th US Amateur Public Links Championship, and final as it is being retired after this season. Two locals, Kyle Weldon and Steven Souchek, made it through and will play at Sand Creek Station in Newton, KS next month. I always say US Senior Open Qualifying may be the hardest USGA championship to qualify for, this year proved just that. One spot was up for grabs out of forty-seven (47) players at The Legends CC on June 16. Mark Gardiner, an amateur from Cardinal Creek GC at Scott Air Force Base, fired a fantastic 2-under par 70 to earn the lone spot. It is one of the most gratifying aspects of my job, to ask the question, “Do you accept this qualifying certificate to play in this USGA Championship?” Congratulations Mark! As we head into July the schedule just seems to continue ramping up. The Metropolitan Open Championship will be played July 10-12 at The Country Club of St. Albans. This is going to be another fantastic event with Plaza Motors as the Presenting Sponsor and another strong field will be showcased. The championship will kick-off July 9 with the Toro/JP Morgan Pro-Am and the championship commences July 10. The full field will play Thursday-Friday before being cut to the low 40 scores and ties for the final round Saturday. I invite you to come out to St. Albans to see some of the future stars of the Web.com and PGA Tour, we have professionals from 12 states currently registered coming to St. Albans. Wow…a lot happening over the next couple months. Thank you for your support of MAGA and for taking the time to read The Metropolitan! We have received some really great feedback from you, our individual members following each edition. As always, if you have any questions or would like to see something in particular addressed in a future issue, email me directly at curt@metga.org.

RULES OF GOLF CORNER (Continued) What common mistakes are made in taking a drop? One is locating the nearest point of relief. That is the point nearest to where the ball lies: • that is not nearer the hole, and • where, if the ball were so positioned, no interference by the condition from which relief is sought would exist for the stroke the player would have made from the original position if the condition were not there. That may involve measuring to insure it is the nearest point. The player should then measure one club length and drop in the appropriate area. The ball must be dropped from shoulder height and arm’s length; not from waist high, not from head high. Provided the ball does not roll more than two club lengths, roll nearer the hole or roll back to where there is interference from the condition from which he took relief, the ball is properly in play. If the player drops improperly and plays a stroke, he is playing from a wrong place and incurs a two stroke penalty. A player might have the opportunity to take a drop; maybe even several drops in a round. Dropping correctly avoids unnecessary penalties.

RULES OF GOLF CORNER IS THAT ONE CLUB LENGTH OR TWO? Finding the proper place to take a drop is a common situation faced by golfers. It seems simple, right? Watch a PGA event on TV. When you see a Rules Official assisting a player, chances are it involves a drop. Do the pros make mistakes on ball drops? You bet. One of the most talked about recently was Tiger Woods’ improper drop in the 2013 Masters after hitting into a water hazard. It eventually cost him two strokes at a time when he was very much in contention. When a player chooses the option to drop, how should he proceed? If it is a penalty situation such as a ball in a lateral water hazard or a lie the player decides is unplayable, the player has multiple options. One option is to drop, not nearer the hole, within two club lengths from the present ball position for a ball unplayable or from the margin of the lateral hazard where last crossed (or from a point on the opposite margin equidistant from the hole). Penalty situations are the only ones where two club lengths relief is permitted. What about relief without penalty from: • An immovable obstruction such as a cart path or other immovable man-made object, • from an abnormal ground condition such as ground under repair, casual water or hole, cast or runway made by a burrowing animal, reptile or bird, • from a wrong putting green? In these cases, the competitor must locate the nearest point of relief and properly drop within one club length and not nearer the hole.

DRIVER LOFT: A NEW TAKE ON THE ISSUE. WHY PROS ARE HITTING DRIVERS WITH HIGHER LOFTS FOR GREATER DISTANCE. Anyone who has played the game for some time will surely recall when club manufacturers told us that to get longer tee shots we needed to hit drivers with lower face angles - often as low as 8-9 degrees! I drank the cool-aid and bought a 9.5 degree Cobra, as I’m sure many players did. Now we’re hearing another story; raise the face angle (loft) to as much as 16 degrees to generate greater distance! So, what’s up with this? Is it for real or are they just trying to sell us newer drivers? TaylorMade’s new SLDR and SLDRs are the latest in hi-tech design for players. According to the manufacturer, these are the lowest spinning drivers they have ever made while in the same breath state they have unlocked the key to distance by hitting the ball higher - with less spin - by adding more loft. They go on to state that the ideal launch angle is 17 degrees with a spin rate of 1700 rpm. If we go back to the early days of the golf ball, we know that to generate distance you need lift. Lift is created when air flows over and under the ball, just like an airplane wing. Early balls were smooth and did not fly very far; but when they were “cut” this created lift, just as today’s dimples do on modern golf balls (The Magnus Effect). Still, spin is essential to create lift; while we all know that side-spin (left or right) is the demon devil, generating a slice or hook. So, creating a club that reduces spin will reduce the amount of side-spin and, if TaylorMade is correct, the higher launch angle will do so without losing - and perhaps even adding - distance. Perhaps this is as much due to the COR of the club (coefficient of restitution) which has been the subject of discussion in recent years. If it is true that TaylorMade has found the secret to longer, straighter drives, it will certainly give it the edge in the market for a time. However, if they are successful, certainly more manufacturers will follow suit. The SLDR uses a sliding weight within the club to promote a fade or a draw while also moving the center of gravity forward, going against the prevailing industry thought, which was low and at the back of the club. The SLDR S metalwoods are aimed at the amateur market while the SLDR will continue to be played by touring pros as they offer more adjustment options. Finally, TaylorMade introduced its miniDriver in May with a 260cc head (compared to 460cc for the normal SLDR head). Justin Rose used one of these at the Masters during practice rounds and said he gained an extra 10 yards when compared to his 3-wood. So far, only Callaway is matching TaylorMade on the lofts above 13 degrees, making it likely that Ping, Titleist, Nike and others are taking a wait-and-see approach to how quickly golfers jump at these new drivers.

SENIOR OPEN QUALIFYING
WOMEN’S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
(continued from page 1)
(continued from page 1) Despite playing very little over the past months, as she prepared to lead the USA Curtis Cup Team to victory in the just completed Match at St. Louis CC June 6-8, Ellen paid close attention to her players as the wiley veteran - with six USGA titles, eight Missouri Amateur crowns, two Curtis Cup competitions and a Trans-National title - sat back and watched her players dominant the GB&I team. Telling everyone who would listen that once the Match was over she needed to work on her game, Ellen posted rounds of 72 and 70 for a 2-under 142 and a five shot win to claim her 13th Metropolitan Women’s Amateur Championship at Forest Hills Country Club and her first title since 2010. It would seem that for some players, practice may be overrated! Defending champion Catherine Dolan, bounced back from an opening round of 75 to shoot even par on her second round while Brooke Cusumano, sister of Alex - who finished 2nd at the Old Warson Cup matches in May - finished in third position. The freshman at SIU Carbondale - a two time state individual champion in high school - was unable to post a birdie in her second round over the demanding Forest Hills layout. Meanwhile, Dolan, for former Missouri State standout and recent qualifier for the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship, was forced to settle for a solid round in her effort to catch Port, who posted a 4-under 32 on the front nine to effectively end the chase. A 2-over back nine just made the result a little closer. Port’s name will again be etched onto the Jayne M. Watson Trophy. In other action, there were three other flights competing. These flights were based on course handicaps and competed for Net winners in each flight.
spot in the Senior Open will certainly make things easier at home” Gardiner stated, “however, it’s also her thirtieth high school reunion, but I’m sure we’ll be heading to Oklahoma and not North Dakota.” Originally from Maine, Gardiner traveled the globe with the Air Force. “I never flew jets” he comments, “I flew a desk.” Spending his career in an HR capacity left him time to perfect his game. However, in addition to golf, Gardiner is also an excellent bowler. In 2004. he qualified to play in PBA event at St. Clair Lanes where he competed with Pete Weber. A week before the Senior Open qualifying, he missed qualifying for the US Amateur Public Links by a single shot. He learned from that experience in qualifying for the Senior Open. Looking back through the record books for the last amateur to qualify for the Senior Open, the list includes the like of Jim Holtgrieve, David Estes and Don Bliss as amateurs who teed it up with the games greats. In the threesome with Brian Fogt and JC Anderson, two longtime top professionals, it was the amateur who played the marquee round. Gardiner, who is deaf in his right ear, noted that playing with Fogt, who also has a hearing loss, must have left JC feeling like he was talking to himself during the round. Despite putting it into trouble on the 13th and finding more problems on number 16, his birdie at the 18th sealed the deal...and the trip to Edmond, Oklahoma.

Old Warson CC was the site for the 1971 Ryder Cup matches between the United States and Great Britain & Ireland (GB&I). It would not be until 1979 that the US would take on a team from Europe. Since the club’s opening in 1955, Old Warson had sought out a premier event. Having looked at a U.S. Open and a PGA, in 1965 the PGA informed the club that the 1971 event would be theirs. Stars on the team would be household names: Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino, Charles Coody, Frank Beard, Billy Casper, Gene Littler, Dave Stockton, Mason Rudolph, Miller Barber, Gardner Dickinson and captain Jay Hebert. On the GB&I team, Tony Jacklin was the star, with Peter Oosterhuis, Christy O’Connor and Bernard Gallacher other well known players. The US won 18½ to 13½, continuing the dominant theme up to that time. Using local caddies, two incidents marred the event, with each side suffering equally. In Saturday’s singles, Dickinson’s 14-year-old caddie, thinking a putt had been conceded, picked up Gardner’s ball as it lay inches from the cup, losing him the hole. In a Friday Four Ball match, Gallalcher’s caddie - and a huge Palmer fan - watched as Arnie hit a shot at the par-3 seventh. Out of curiosity, the caddie - a Normandie member - asked Arnie what club he hit. The referee overheard this and, despite protestations by the American team not to enforce the rule, awarded the hole to the US. The next day, the GB&I captain Eric Brown was quoted as saying, “we not only have to defeat the Americans, but the referees and our own caddies.”
