While playing with 2016 MAGA Open winner Dan Woltman on the Web. com Tour, Woltman mentioned to DJ Brigman that he should try and put the MAGA Open on his schedule. That was certainly one very good piece of advice. After a 7-under 64 during Wednesday’s first round, everyone at the CC of St. Albans knew who Brigman was. The 41year old professional, winner of four pro events, including two on the Nationwide Tour, turned professional in 1999 after a stellar amateur career in New Mexico. A graduate of the University of New Mexico, the father of three has, has pretty much seen everything life on the minitours has to offer. He had brief stays on the PGA Tour in Continued on page 4

Happy 4th of July! I probably write this each year, but hard to believe we are halfway through another season here at MAGA. Amazing where the time goes once the tournament season kicks in to full gear. However, we have had a great season to date. The Open last month was unbelievable! Hands down the best Open and I said the Curt Rohe same last year. The Country Club of St. Albans Executive Director was such a terrific host, I cannot thank them enough for what they have done to elevate this event into the premier Open event in the midwest, maybe the country. The comments I received from the players this year on how the event is conducted, the hospitality of the membership, the volunteers, etc. etc. were so plentiful we could write a whole newsletter on the subject. DJ Brigman was a great champion and elated to put this title in his resume. With the Open in June it made last month quite the busy time. Looking ahead, July is going to be pretty low key than in years past and that is ok! Not only for my staff, which has performed brilliantly through the season thus far, but our Rules Committee has been hard at work as well. We are very fortunate to have an extremely dedicated group of men and women who allow us to do conduct successful events because of their time and experience, and I personally thank them for their time. I want to comment on our U.S. Junior Amateur qualifier which we conducted at The Links at Kokopelli last week. Having a USGA qualifying round in Southern Illinois was a first. Our collaboration with the Southern Illinois was the driving force in taking a USGA qualifier to their region. Many thanks to Kokopelli, which embraced and was a gracious host in bringing an event of this kind to their region. Check out the full details inside this issue. While MAGA may be slower in July, we do have some exciting things happening in St. Louis in July. The U.S. Girls’ Junior Amateur will be played at Boone Valley Golf Club July 24-29, the best junior girls from the United States and beyond will compete for a national title. Also, our gracious Open host, the Country Club of St. Albans is hosting the Boys and Girls PGA Junior Championships this month. The Girls will be July 18-21 and the Boys July 31-August 3. Get out and see the top juniors in the country and the world compete in our backyards. As always, thank you for taking some time to read our newsletter, a lot of great information in this issue.

Retaining Wall
Rules of Golf Corner Forest Hills CC Special Rulings
Grass Strip The Forest Hills Country Club has been the site of many elite competitions, most recently US Open Qualifier in May 2016. The event was not without some interesting rulings. Ask yourself, “What are the odds?”
Below: Grass strip below retaining wall
Hole No. 3 (Par 4): (Below) The cart path on the right side of the fairway has a white out-of-bounds line painted on the outside edge. When a ball comes to rest on the path, one of the player’s options is to take free relief (Rule 242b Immovable Obstructions). Relief will always be on the fairway side of the path, as the nearest point of relief must be “on the course.”
Hole No. 12 (Par 3): (Below) A curbed, concrete cart path runs uphill to the right of the elevated putting green. Occasionally, a ball will bounce off the hill and roll down the path. There is a rainwater drain strategically located in the path, and a ball came to rest on the drain as pictured. The metal drain and curbed path are independent immovable obstructions (no Local Rule treating the drain and path as one obstruction). The player may take relief from drain (lie interference), or from the concrete (swing interference by curb or stance interference). Further, the area between the curbing and out-of-bounds (see highlighted string in picture), leaves little room for taking relief. The righthanded player took relief left of the drain onto the cart path, from which he took relief again left onto a grass slope with an unhindered shot to the putting green.
Hole No. 11 (Par 4): (Above right) To the left of the putting green are two large bunkers. Below the bunkers is a moderately high retaining wall (rocks within woven-wire). A cart path runs parallel along the base of the wall, separated from the wall by a strip of grass. Although the Club has a Local Rule designating the wall as an integral part of the course, U.S. Open Qualifying did not, meaning the wall was an immovable obstruction. A player’s ball came to rest in the strip, leaving the player a challenging steep shot to the elevated green. The player had both stance interference from the cart path and area of swing interference from the wall. The player took relief from the wall (Rule 25-1b) onto the cart path, from which he took relief (Rule 25-1b again) onto the other side of the path. When finished, he was 7-8 feet from the wall with an open pitch shot to the putting green. (Incidentally, the player would have received relief from the wall even if the ball were at the very base).

Metropolitan Open 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2011. While on Tour, he finished tied for 11th twice, at the Shell Houston Open and the Bell Canadian Open. He operates a successful instruction school in New Mexico when not competing on the Web.com Tour. He obviously found that the Lewis & Clark course fit his eye, as his three sub-par rounds had him 11-under par for the week. “It’s a beautiful place, a gem of a course condition and the tournament is run exceptionally well. You throw those all together and it makes for a great product. I am excited to be champion!” When asked about his scoring out at St. Albans he added, “you have to get after it on the front 9, it’s the scoring 9. The back 9 you just have to hang on, 14 may be one of the hardest par 5 driving holes I play all year and the finishing holes of 17 and 18 are terrific.” Despite his remarks, actually taking the title was not that easy. Going off in the next to last group at 8-under, he was a shot out of the lead overnight as Brian Bullington of Frankfort, IL and Nick Arman of Ellisville were tied at the top of the leaderboard. At the end of nine holes, Brigman had caught Bullington while Arman fell two strokes off the pace. Tim Crouch, of Mt. Vernon, OH, made a strong run, going out in 34 and matching that on the back to post a 68, leaving him at 204. Winston Salem, NC’s Ryan Sullivan matched Crouch’s 34 and did him one better on the back to 2017 Champion DJ Brigman finish with a 67, tied with Crouch at 204. As Brigman arrived at the demanding 17th, his card had all pars on the back nine. However, a birdie at the 16th, saw Bullington momentarily pull two shots ahead. Brigman’s birdie 3 at the 17th, and a par at the eighteenth, put him at 11-under for the tournament, one behind Bullington. Meanwhile, Bullington was having problems on the 17th and after missing the green to the left, failed to get up and down for par. At the 18th, Bullington’s drive found a bunker down the left side, from which he had to blast out. His third shot found the putting surface but his attempt for par slid past and he missed the comeback for bogey, taking a double on the final hole. With this, Brigman had a 2-shot victory. Runner-up Brian Bullington Brad Carpenter of Washington, MO, earned low amateur honors with a 219 total.

U.S. Women’s Open Qualifying Ally McDonald shoots 4-under for medal Ally McDonald, one of the stars of the 2014 Curtis Cup, playing on the LPGA tour for her second season, showed up at Bogey Hills and displayed wonderful shotmaking, posting a level par 71 in her first round before burning up the course with a 4-under 67 to take medalist honors and entry into the 2017 US Women’s Open. Hot on her heels was Pei Yun Chien from China who was a shot back, earning the second of two spots available at the site. The 2017 U.S. Girls’ Junior at Boone Valley 156 of the best young female players in the world will be at Boone Valley July 24-29 to contend for the premier Junior Girls Championship in the world. Just as it was last fall at Old Warson, where the best Senior Amateurs came to compete for a USGA title, the St. Louis area will once again be in the spotlight as the USGA Junior Girls title will be on the line in late July. However, before you think this is not going to be a quality test of golf, there are a few things to remember. The girls will play the course at around 6,500 yards. The USGA will utilize about 24 different teeing ground positions. They will play from the black tees - normally the men’s member tees. The average drives for players contending will be in the 250-270 range. The USGA raised the age limit to players not having reached their 19th birthday. This will mean a number of the players will soon be or will have completed their freshman year in college!! Two-time champion Eun Jeong Song, who is only 17, became the first girl in 45 years to defend her title when she won the 2016 championship. She is eligible to go for a three-peat, which would tie her with Boone Valley’s GM Bryan McMurray Tiger Woods, who won three consecutive US Amateur titles.
We recently caught up with Bryan McMurray, General Manager at Boone Valley, to update us regarding preparations for the event. “If you haven’t been out to Boone Valley in a few years, there have been a few changes to the course. We added a new tee box to the fourth hole, lengthening it for ladies and making the hole, which is very demanding, a bit shorter for the men. In addition, we made a change to our tenth hole. We removed a few trees to the right of the green, opening up the area. We also leveled the ground to the right of the putting surface and added a bunker at the front right. What this did was provide players with a better visual reference around the green.” McMurray also added some information about the event. “I was told by the USGA that more applications were received for this event than for the Women’s Amateur. That’s a tremendous boost for golf. Twenty-five years from now, these young ladies will continue playing golf, whether professionally or with friends or family at a course or club. I also want to note the strong support from those volunteering for the event. We have about 50 of our members, with about 180 total volunteers who will contribute during the week. I’d be remiss in not mentioning the strong support of the Taylor family for the event as well.” Bryan also told us about spectator access for the event. “Spectators will be able to park adjacent to our maintenance area and then shuttled over to the course. We also expect a number of college coaches to be present as they will be looking at potential recruits. Of course, a lot of parents will also be attending. All rounds, including the practice days, are open to the public. There is no charge for the event. Food stations will be available on the course as well as on the veranda at the clubhouse.” We asked him if he has had many requests from around the country. “We’ve actually had a lot of parents contact us looking to get the best caddie for their players. In that regard, we’ve gotten great support from area clubs - Bellerive, Old Warson, St. Louis, Westwood, Meadowbrook, Westborough and a few others - providing us with caddies. Michael Sebright has done an excellent job preparing them for the championship.” After two days of practice on Saturday and Sunday, the stroke play qualifying begins on Monday. After 36 holes, the field is cut to 64 players who will begin match play on Wednesday, July 26. For those unable to make it out to Boone Valley, the final three days will air on Fox Sports1, with the quarterfinals and semifinals on Friday and the championship match on Saturday from 1-3pm CDT. St. Louis Golf History - Judy Torluemke Rankin -
Growing up just south of Forest Park, in 1951 Paul Torluemke took his six-year-old daughter Judy to see Triple A pro Bob Green for lessons. By age 8 she was going around the Triple A course in 45. Two years later she shot 50 in the Junior Girls’ District. That same year she entered the National Pee Wee tournament in Orlando and won. And again in 1954 and 1955, securing the Babe Zaharias trophy. The organizers presented a new trophy for the championship, the Judy Torluemke Trophy. When she was 11, her mother died of cancer at the age of 34. To get past this tragedy, Judy kept her focus on golf, finishing second in the District Junior that summer. She captured the District Girls’ Junior title in 1958 and 1959, the entered the ‘59 Missouri Women’s Amateur at Hickory Hills in Springfield, and defeated Karen Schull for the victory. Two years later, she took the title again.
Nine-year old Judy playing in an exhibition with Patty Berg
Judy joined the LPGA at age 17 and found immediate success
She also found great success as one of golf’s best announcers
In between, at the 1960 US Women’s Open, she finished as low amateur. Later that summer she went to play in the Women’s British Amateur and played poorly, almost causing her to put her clubs away. Then came a phone call from Sports Illustrated, naming her the “Best Girl Golfer” and things turned around. In 1962, with just a semester left before she was to graduate from Eureka High School - her father had moved to Ellisville and her travels had caused her to miss almost a full semester, Judy made the decision to turn professional. During her career she won 26 LPGA titles, was leading money winner on two occasions, twice player of the year, a three-time winner of the Vare Trophy, the 2002 Bob Jones Award honoree, the 2007 Komen Award and the 2010 Tom Morris Award. Oh, and she was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2000. In 1996 she was picked to captain the Solheim Cup team. Some of the captains’ picks she made had a number of media questioning her selections; that is until her intuition proved right and both players contributed to the teams winning margin. She was next asked to captain the 1998 team, which also secured a victory. However, players today may know her best for her outstanding work on television as an announcer for various events. She’s one of the best. Her husband, Walter “Yippy” Rankin passed away in 2012. She continues to live in Midland, Texas.
After finishing as low amateur in the 1960 Women’s US Open, SI declared her the best girl golfer
To those who know her, she is considered one of the nicest people in the business.

US Junior Girls Volunteer Opportunities
Dear Fellow Golfers, We are excited to announce that Boone Valley Golf Club will be hosting the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship from July 24th – July 29th, 2017. The participants are the top female golfers in the country that are 18 years old or younger. Many of these girls have signed with national colleges. It will be exciting to watch them challenge our great golf course. Additionally, the Championship will be covered by Fox Sports. We are asking for you to be one of the 56 walking scorers to conduct this great championship. Each volunteer will be requested to work three shifts. In addition to the volunteer uniform and food on the days you volunteer, you will be given the opportunity to play Boone Valley following the Championship. Also, the list of volunteers will be given to the chairman of the PGA Championship to be held in 2018 at Bellerive Country Club. To volunteer you can click on this link https://pgamac.wufoo.com/forms/2017-us-girls-junior-championshipjuly-2229/. Additionally, you can find the volunteer form at http://www.BooneValley.org. PGA Club Professional Championship Westborough’s Jimmy Bals, Shane Blankenship from Franklin County CC and Loel Fischer from Norwood Hills, were among the 312 pros competing in the recent Club Professional Championship, held at the Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Oregon. Dating back to 1968 when the first event was held, this is the annual event to determine both the Champion as well as those who will qualify to play in the PGA Championship. Also in the field was Mike Small, head coach at the University of Illinois and Jeffrey Sedorcek of Kansas City, brother of Rob Sedorcek at St. Albans.

Curtis Cup Recap: Three Years Later The United States 13 and Great Britain & Ireland 7. End of story? Not really. For many of the players, it marked not the end, but a milestone in their careers. Emma Talley, who holed the winning putt on the fifteenth green at St. Louis Country Club on the glorious Sunday, she went back to school, graduating in the spring of 2016. So did Mariah Stackhouse, who would later lead Stanford to an NCAA championship in 2015. Others, such as Ally McDonald, Ashlan Ramsey, Annie Park, Alison Lee on the US team, and Georgia Hall, Gabriella Cowley and Annabel Dimmock for GB&I also began the enjoy life as professional golfers. Another GB&I player, Stephanie Meadow, who had recently graduated from Alabama in 2014 (and was a teammate of Emma Talley), played in the 2014 US Women’s Open at Pinehurst barely three weeks after the Curtis Cup ended, finishing in third position. Alison Lee had perhaps the most Ally McDonald (left) and Emma Talley successful season, earning sufficient points to make the 2015 Solheim Cup squad. But a golfer’s life has it’s up and downs. Just as the men must prove their mettle on the web.com and other tours, the the ladies, it’s the Symetra Tour within the US. As is the case in professional golf, winning or finishing high in an event translates into dollars and points. To the victor goes the spoils, and entry onto the LPGA Tour! Ally McDonald, an two-time All-American at Mississippi State, played during 2016 on the Symetra Tour, earning over $100,000, finishing second on the money list with 8 top-10 finishes, and earning a spot on the LPGA Tour for 2017 when she finished in a tie for 22nd at the Final Stage. Like most rookies, she struggled at times, but continues to post good numbers, finishing in the money in six of her eight events. Emma Talley, who won the 2013 US Women’s Amateur, the 2015 NCAA Individual title and was the public face for the US Team at the Curtis Cup, going 3-0-1 during the event and closing out the US victory. After graduating in 2016, she spent six months on the Symetra Tour, finishing in the top 10 in three of her 14 events. Thus far in 2017, she has four top 10’s from the 9 events (thru June 19). Both Emma and Ally were in town on June 7 as they looked to earn spots in the US Women’s Open at the qualifying round at Bogey Hills. With only two spots available, it would be a challenge for both players. When the 36 holes were complete, Ally had posted rounds of 71 - 67 to earn the qualifying medal. MAGA: Do you have any special memories of the Curtis Cup? Have you had time to reflect on what it meant to represent your country? Everything about the event was just so special. The way the Port family put everything together along with the support of St. Louis Country Club. It was really neat how Ellen got us involved as well. She let us make some of the decisions regarding practices and other events. Overall, it is probably the biggest single event in my career to date. Representing my country. It doesn’t get much better than that. It’s funny, right after the Curtis Cup I had time to look back on what took place and how great everything was. But three years later, life is moving real fast now. Between all the events and activities we have to maintain, there really isn’t must time to reflect. With the pro-am’s, parties and everything that takes place during a tournament, it seems that we’re in the spotlight all the time. Maybe in a few years I’ll be able to do that, but for now, life is just moving along so quickly. MAGA: Emma, your first foursome match pitted you and Mariah Stackhouse against your teammate at Alabama, Stephanie Meadow and her partner. Being your teammate, and a senior, was there any added emotion during that match? For sure. Stephanie is such a great player. She’s so competitive. For Mariah and I to go out and defeat them was a big boost for our team. Plus, being as competitive as I am, I did not want to lose to my teammate!

MAGA: For many younger players, you are both role models. Is that difficult for you to adjust to? It’s really nice when youngsters come up to us and ask for our autographs. They ask questions like “How did you make that shot?” or “How do you do something?” It’s really quite an honor. Honestly, it doesn’t get old. It’s really pretty cool. MAGA: You both came out of college with exceptional credentials. Ally, you were a two-time All-American and Emma, you won the US Women’s Amateur and the NCAA individual title. So, what was the adjustment to life as a golf professional? Without a doubt it’s the travel. If we told you what our schedules have been like it would amaze you. We bounce back and forth across the country for tournaments. I’ve (Ally) been out here a little longer than Emma and it takes a while to adjust to everything. It’s finding a place to stay, airline schedules, car rentals, practice times, caddies, everything that goes into it even before you tee it up in the event. I’ve been lucky in that I was high on the money list in 2016 and made it to the LPGA Tour in late 2016. Last year (2016) was a lot of fun as Emma and I traveled together on the Symetra Tour. I’m getting more comfortable with dealing with all this now. I actually could have had status on the LPGA tour but I felt it was better for me to spend a season on the Symetra Tour to improve. Fortunately, it worked our well. For me (Emma), I graduated from Alabama in May 2016 and then began to enter some events. Certainly those wins got my name out there but that’s the thing about this game, now I have to get my (LPGA) Card and prove myself. Because of my amateur career I also had the opportunity to play on the LPGA Tour while in college. That really helped a lot. Showed me what I needed to do to compete out there. That experience went a long way. Now I’m focused on getting my (LPGA) Card. For the six months I played the Symetra Tour last year I think I did really well adjusting to the lifestyle and working to improve my game. This year, it’s been a bit easier. I’ve been struggling with my putting for a while, but putted better in the last few weeks. MAGA: What impresses you most about the quality of play on the LPGA and Symetra Tours? Everybody out here can really play. It’s obvious that the players coming over from Asia and elsewhere have spent years getting better. Not all of them came over here and went to school. They just worked very hard on the tours there to improve. In some ways, it pushes us to get better. If we want to succeed out on the pro tours, we just have to play better. MAGA: Do you keep in touch with your teammates from the Curtis Cup? Definitely. A number are playing on the Symetra Tour with me (Emma), while I know Ally sees several who are playing on the LPGA Tour. (Ally) Yes, I know that a few from the GB&I team are playing in Europe but three or four are playing here. MAGA: Growing up I’m sure you watched professional golf, both men and women. Have you had the opportunity to meet anyone who was someone you admired? (Ally) growing up it was Annika Sorenstam who I admired. She was the person I aspired to be. Earlier this year I had the opportunity to play a practice round with Lydia Ko in Hawaii. It was fun watching her, the way she struck the ball, the confidence she has. I played right with her that day. For me, I have to continue to believe in myself and my ability. Sure, I’m going to have an off day now and then. Right now, that’s how I see the difference between the best players and myself. They are just more consistent. I have to work toward being more consistent with my game, eliminating the “off ” rounds. MAGA: Both of you mentioned the support system you have in place. (Emma) Yes, I’ve been very lucky. My parents have been very supportive of my career. They know what I want to achieve and they have been able to come to a number of my tournaments to watch. Being on the road by yourself can get a little lonely, so it’s important to see a friendly face, and to find those you can get comfortable with. It helps a lot. (Ally) I couldn’t agree more. I had a great coach in college who helped prepare me for the professional game, especially during my last two years. I also have a great coach now who I can lean on when things may not be where I want them to be. It’s especially important during my off weeks, when I can meet with him and we have the time to work on things. Right now, like Emma, I continue to work on my putting. I see that the best players are generally those who are putting better each week. It may sound old, but the best putters generally do the best out here. Note: At the Symetra Tour event on June 24-25 in the Island Resort Championship in Harris, Michigan, Emma Talley earned her first professional victory, posting rounds of 66-69 and a three shot victory. The same weekend, playing in the LPGA NW Arkansas Championship in Rogers, Arkansas, Ally McDonald shot 65-73-70=208 to finish in a tie for 48th. Ally will also be in the field for the US Women’s Open at Trump National GC in New Jersey. The Metropolitan

East Side Amateur Lefty Alex Cusumano, a perennial contender at most MAGA championships, and Franklin County’s Ryan Eckelkamp edged away from the field during the first round of the East Side Amateur at Spencer T. Olin with 3-under par rounds of 69. However, on Sunday, Cusumano lost his touch and posted a 75, falling off the pace. Meanwhile, Eckelkamp continued his torrid play, posting a 4-under 68, eventually winning by six shots over Ryan Sullivan and Parker Goldman, both of whom posted 143 totals. For Eckelkamp, playing out of Franklin County CC, this marked his first individual title in a MAGA Chammpionship. In the senior Division, Jeff Johnson and Andy Frost tied for the title with 155 totals. David Johnson finsihed third, a stroke back at 156. Rising from the Ashes: Bogey Hills’ Return The disastrous fire in February 2017, which destroyed the clubhouse at Bogey Hills, was certainly a bitter pill for the Walters family. Formed in 1961, the original clubhouse was formed from the farmhouse that stood on the grounds. Through the years, and many additions and upgrades, it grew to over 36,000 sq. ft. and supported, at various times, as many as 600 members! That was then. The fire, though a disaster for the club, has also given them the opportunity to re-invent themselves to meet the needs of Main Entrance today’s members. “The new building will be about 40,000 sq. ft. This will allow us to add some member amenities that were not in the old clubhouse,” noted Denny Walters recently. “We’ll be adding a fitness facility, a new kids area, and an indoor teaching area that will also offer club fitting and include golf simulators, allowing members to play during the winter months.” Walters also told us that they would also be making additions to the pool area, including a new bar. In addition, the insurance the club had on the property also enabled them to pass along savings to Bogey members, reflecting their inability to use the club. Walters took advantage of this to also pass on those savings to new members, resulting in the addition of 35-40 to the club roster. The club hired Brinkman Constructors to design and construct the new facility. Walters indicated that the past several months have been spent getting the design correct, obtaining the proper permits and having the new building meet building codes. Now that the process is complete, they hope to begin construction sometime in July. The goal is to get the main parts of the building under roof in the fall and have the clubhouse open around mid-March 2018. “While we certainly wish we did not have to go through this, it’s an exciting time,” said Walters, “however, at the same time we’re going to go from the old to the new, and while we’ll have memories of the past we’ll be looking to the future!”

Southern Illinois Golf Association News “SIGA News” “Down South with the SIGA” It was during the 1924 Southern Illinois Amateur Golf Championship at Belleville that Larry E. May broached the matter to the other clubs that a permanent Southern Illinois Golf Association be formed to handle the annual event in official style. This met with ready response by the original cup’s donor and Centralia and other clubs, and as a result the Southern Illinois Golf Association was formed at Centralia, August 25th, 1924, following a call to all clubs in Illinois on or south of the Big Four Railroad to send two delegates. A good attendance followed the call, nine different clubs sending representatives. At present twenty-one clubs are affiliated with the association in the year 1924. Look for more on the history of the SIGA in future newsletters.
