ADVISORY COMMITTEE Scott Thomas, Chairman Dustin Ashby Tom Barry Skip Berkmeyer Jim Dunn David Rhoads Curt Rohe

Greetings to our members! I feel like I just wrote a column introducing the beginning of the tournament season…and here we are end of October with the 2014 season in the books. It has been Curt Rohe another fantastic golf season of Executive Director MAGA Championships, USGA Qualifying Rounds and the Amateur Series. As we head to the winter months, I get asked a lot “What do you do when the tournaments are finished?” Quite simply, tournament season really never ends. Before the 2014 season was complete I had already began working on the 2015 calendar and securing sites. I am pretty excited to say that the 2015 tournament calendar is about 90% complete with another fantastic slate of event and venues for next year. The highlight of 2015 will no doubt be the 25th Metropolitan Amateur Championship at Boone Valley Golf Club. I want to take a second to recognize our course rating team, led by Ron Rhoades and Jayne Watson. Ron and Jayne have really worked together the last two seasons in getting our member clubs course and slope ratings up-to-date and current for the USGA. We have rated more courses in the last two seasons than in the 8-10 years previous combined. It has been a tall order and I cannot thank these two enough for the leadership they have taken in this endeavor, and to the numerous other volunteers that have dedicated a lot of time into the ratings as well. Thank you for taking the time to read through The Metropolitan, it has been a pleasure bringing the news of MAGA to you in this format. Have a great holiday season as the next issue (November/December) will be a year end review for 2014. As always, feel free to reach out to me at curt@metga.org.

happens, consultation with other officials was necessary to clarify matters, after which the ruling was explained to the player and his marker a few holes later. The Committee ruled there was no penalty on the basis of Decisions 13-4/13 and 13-4/13.5. They determined there was no improvement in the lie of the ball or area of intended stance or swing as a result of a loose impediment being accidentally moved and returned to its place; further, the player's ball did not move.

RULES OF GOLF CORNER Playing From a Lateral Water Hazard We've all been there. Should I try playing my ball as it lies in a water hazard, or would it be wiser just to take a one stroke penalty and safely exit under Rule 261 (Relief for Ball in Water Hazard)? It depends on many factors, but caution is advised. Here's an interesting Rule situation that occurred during a tournament.

However, if either or both the lie of the ball or the area of intended stance or swing were determined to have been improved, the player would have incurred a two-stroke penalty under Rule 13-4 (Prohibited Actions in Hazard). In hindsight, which is almost always perfect, the area of intended swing was not improved but worsened, as the player could not make a backswing without hitting the stick. Therefore, at that point, there was no penalty (i.e., no improvement). If an official had not been present, the player would have had three choices: 1) try hitting through the stick in its elevated position to hit the ball, 2) proceed under a 26-1 option, or 3) lowering the stick, thus improving the area of intended swing, and incurring a two stroke penalty.

A player's approach shot bounces left of the putting green down a small bank into a heavily wooded area marked as a lateral water hazard. An official, who witnessed the shot, walks into the area with the player to search for the ball. It is found resting on top of a thick bed of dead leaves. The player has an open shot to the hole; however, directly behind the ball lays a 1/2-in diameter stick and immediately behind the stick lays a 3in diameter limb, both of which are flat on the ground and perpendicular to the line of play. The player inquires as to his options. He is advised that the ball is in a lateral water hazard, so he may play the ball as it lies or take relief under a Rule 26-1 option (one stroke penalty). The player decides to play the ball. In light of the situation, he is reminded not to ground his club, move loose impediments, including not touching either the stick or limb on his backswing. The player retrieves a club, returns, and starts to take his stance. As he places his right foot, the stick behind his ball pops up about 4-5 inches but the ball does not move. The player freezes with the stick elevated and stationary, looks over his shoulder to the official standing nearby and exclaims "Now what?"

How did the official’s guidance regarding lowering the stick impact the ruling? The player asked an official for guidance and precisely followed that guidance. He lowered the stick from a worsened position (elevated 4 inches above and slightly behind ball) to an improved position (original position). The player should not be penalized for this “improvement” because he acted on the official’s guidance. After the stick was at rest, the player was on his own again. Lessons learned: 1) be extremely careful when entering and playing a ball from a hazard, 2) especially watch out for the actions of your feet in a hazard near the ball, 3) both players and officials are well advised to ask for help in doubtful situations, and 4) not all ruling situations are straightforward (i.e., sometimes many aspects to consider).

The official, also taken aback, advises the player that he thinks a two-stroke penalty was incurred, but to gently return the stick to its place by slowly lifting his foot. The stick returns to its original position behind the ball. The ball does not move. The player proceeds to hit the ball out of the hazard. The official tells the player that he will check regarding any penalty. What's the ruling?

Contributed by John Thorman, MAGA Rules Committee. The Rules of Golf Corner will feature a member of our Rules Committee.

This was a unique Rule situation. Note that the player was not given a ruling on the spot. As often

Did You Know... In 2015, the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association will mark its 25th year sponsoring a competition. Beginning with the Men’s championship in 1991, the Ladies first competed for a title in 1993, the same year as the Senior event began. The Invitational Matches first took place in 1996, with the Junior beginning in 2000 and the East Side in 2004 and the Open in 2006. What is remarkable has been the staying power of many of the MAGA’s champions who have won not just multiple titles, but, at least on the Men’s portion, won these in multiple events. The leading title holders are: Player Titles 2nd Events Ellen Port 13 4 Women’s Championship Skip Berkmeyer 9 7 Men’s Championship, East Side, Open, Match Play Don Bliss 6 4 Men’s Championship, Match Play, Senior Don Dupske 4 2 Senior Championships Jim Holtgrieve 4 1 Men’s Championship, Senior, Match Play Scott Edwards 4 2 Men’s Championship, Senior Several players are tied with three victories: David Estes, Shawn Jasper, Scott Langley, Scott Thomas, Justin Bryant.

He is a two-time winner of the Metropolitan Invitational, (the Taylor Cup at the time), the 1994 MAGA Men’s title and the 2007 MAGA Senior Championship.

ST. LOUIS GOLF HISTORY - 1981 US MID-AMATEUR When the USGA began thinking about starting a tournament for the career amateur - those over age 25 - they sought out the two-time Walker Cup player Jim Holtgrieve for his input. He immediately felt it was a terrific idea. Looking for an outstanding course for the inaugural championship, Jim spoke with Bellerive members Tim Crowley and Bob Mason; both supported the concept and convinced Bellerive to become the host club. The championship drew over 1,600 entries and included three former U.S. Amateur champions and a number of former Walker Cup players as well. With a strong field, players such as Jay Sigel, Bob Lewis Jr., Fred Ridley, Marvin Giles and others were the immediate favorites. St. Louisans in the field included: Bill Bahn, Ron Brewer, Roger Null, Bob Mason, Robert Trittler and Jim Holtgrieve, who was low area qualifier at 146, one off the low medal score. Bahn, Null, Mason and Holtgrieve each qualified for match play, with Mason and Holtgrieve winning first round matches. When Mason lost in round two, it was left to Holtgrieve to uphold the area’s honor. He won is third round match 6&5 and then downed Kent Frandsen in the quarterfinals 4&3. He won his semifinal match over Robert Housen by the same score while Bob Lewis took care of Gordon Brewer 5&4 in the other semifinal. It would be two former Walker Cup players - Holtgrieve, 33, and Lewis, 37, - to battle for the title. With Tom O’Toole on his bag, Holtgrieve began his march to victory. Both started strong with birdies to keep the match even through 8. Jim bogeyed nine to go 1-down, while being even par for the round. On the 13th Jim two putted while Bob three-putted from the same distance. Then on the 15th they both hit poor shots and bogeys halved the hole. On 16, Jim made a great two-putt from 50-feet while Lewis three-putted again. Going into 18 1-up, all Jim needed was a halve for the win. Lewis made his par, forcing Jim to step up to the plate. Jim rolled his birdie putt - a little hard he thought - but it caught the right edge of the hole and dived in for a 2-up win. Jim had his National Title and we had a new local champion. 17

AMATEUR SERIES SEASON CONCLUDES AT ABERDEEN WITH CROWNING OF CHAMPIONS Aberdeen Golf Club played host to the 2014 MAGA Amateur Series Championship weekend October 4-5 with forty-three (43) eligible participants from the season long competition preparing to challenge for their respective championships. It was also the tale of two days of weather at Aberdeen for the championship; Saturday saw cold, windy conditions, making scoring very difficult, while Sunday was a picture-perfect day for golf. When the last putt dropped, four champions were crowned, one in each division. Scores for all players in each division are on the following pages.

In our Scratch Open Division, season points leaders Kevin Jeske came away with the title with rounds of 76-73 to win by four shots over Mike Lawton.

The Net Open Division experienced the most growth in 2014 in terms of number of players. Chris Sisler posted Net rounds of 81-67 to come away with the championship. Season points leader, Jason Mueller and Cory Mahoney tied for 2nd at 150.

Our Senior Divisions have been the most popular through the seasons. Russell Hollenbeck had a 10under par net 62 in Round 2 to come from behind and capture the Senior Net Division. Hollenbeck bested Round 1 co-leader Steve Zonca by 2 shots.

In the Senior Scratch Division, Donny Ngala nipped season points leader Pat Ross by one shot to capture the championship. Ngala had rounds of 80-74.
