Curt’s Comments As we move into the late season, I first want to say thank you to our two PJ Boatwright Interns who completed their time with us this summer in August. Kaylee Heggemann and Tyler Bealke spent three, very quick months, with MAGA. Their assistance was, like always, extremely valuable to our tournament operations. These two have headed back to school this fall, we wish Curt Rohe them all the best in their future endeavors.
Executive Director
While Jim makes mention of the passing of Jerry Higginbotham later in the issue, I must personally say how important this man was to my start with MAGA. I learned course rating from Jerry Higginbotham in my beginning years! He was one of the sweetest men I have ever known and his passion for the game was immeasurable. He loved talking about playing at “The Park” (Forest Park) and was the consummate public course player. To hear he made a birdie on his final hole, minutes before suffering the heart attack brings a tear to my eye...RIP Jerry Higginbotham! While we wind down the tournament season we have a couple more events to get through. The Metropolitan Four-Ball Championship is coming up the end of this month and we are excited to take this to a 36hole championship for the first time. This championship is conducted with two divisions, Open (Gross) and Net so sides choose which they want to compete. The Net Division will play a slightly shorter set of tees. Franklin County CC will be a remarkable Four-Ball venue and, as always, will be in fabulous condition at the end of September. The Youth on Course Hundred Hole Hike is coming also at the end of September. An email blast will be going out soon as we seek donations (which are 501(c)3 eligible) to bring awareness and support to the Youth on Course Program here in the St. Louis area. Maggie Smith and Corey Vanek from our staff will be playing 100 holes of golf on September 30 at Pheasant Run Golf Course in O’Fallon, MO to raise these monies. An incentive laden donation plan will be going out in the email where you can earn some MAGA “swag” for donating! Thank you for your continued reading of The Metropolitan! Please support our corporate sponsor ELCO Chevrolet and this will be the final monthly issue for the season. Our next issue will at the end of October. Keep golfing and see down the fairway! Curt

Rules Corner Placing Versus Dropping the Ball Players sometime get mixed up about whether to place or drop their ball depending on the situation during play. It makes a difference, and no one wants an unnecessary penalty. Fortunately, the new Rules have simplified matters. Place the ball (the original ball with a few exceptions) when returning it to a spot. That is, the ball was already in play on a spot before being moved. Naturally, this applies whenever the ball has been marked and lifted (e.g., on the putting green, to identify the ball anywhere on the course, to check if the ball is embedded in the general area). This also relates to a ball Replacing Ball Bumped Aside by Practice Swing Replacing Ball After Identification at rest accidentally moved anywhere on the course, including being kicked, stepped on, or driven over during a search, bumped by a practice swing, and picked up by another player or spectator. If the original ball has been moved but is not readily recoverable (not due to a deliberate act by player), the player may substitute another ball (e.g., a spectator ran away with the ball, or another player mistakenly played the ball 200 yards down the fairway as a wrong ball). If the original spot isn’t precisely known, place the ball on an estimated spot. If the original lie has been altered (ball driven over by a cart), place the ball in the nearest similar lie within one club-length, in the same area of the course, and no nearer the hole. The ball must be replaced by hand (there is a one-stroke penalty for rolling the ball onto the required spot using one’s foot or a club). Dropping instead of placing merits the general penalty (twostrokes in stroke play or loss of hole in match play; playing from a wrong place), unless the dropped ball just happens to roll onto the original spot (then just a one penalty stroke). Drop a ball (the original ball or a substituted ball) when taking relief. That is, when finding a new spot from which to play. This would include relief from an abnormal course condition, Dropping From Cart Path Dropping From Penalty Area (Abnormal Course Condition) penalty area, unplayable ball, wrong green, when using a drop zone, when proceeding under stroke and distance (but not necessary in teeing area), etc. The player gets the general penalty for placing instead of dropping (playing from a wrong place; not a random lie). Note there is an exception for taking relief when the ball lies on the putting green (ball must be placed). Also, when taking relief, after unsuccessfully dropping and re-dropping in the relief area (i.e., ball rolls outside of relief area), the original ball or a substituted ball must be placed where the re-dropped ball first struck the course. Port Peaks at Pinehurst Senior Winning a National Championship Never Gets Old! For the ninth time in her career, Ellen Port captured a National Title. With Seven USGA championships to her credit, a Trans-Miss title - her first - back in 1994, the Port trophy case can add another; the North and South Women’s Senior Championship. Ellen had been competing in this championship for many years, first at the Women’s Amateur, and now as a senior, with 2019 being the year she finally got the best of the field and three of Pinehurst’s demanding courses. Playing courses 8, 6 and 5, the field was peppered with a number of championships. However, not only did Ellen capture the trophy, but did it in true champions’ style, winning by 13 strokes. Her rounds of 73, 70 and 74, were particularly strong when measured against the field, which averaged between 9.6 and 11.4 strokes over par. Though the season is drawing to a close, for Ellen there are two opportunities once again, the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur and the U.S. Senior Women’s Championship left for her to earn her eighth - or perhaps a ninth - USGA Championship.

Kayla Eckelkamp was local medalist for the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur for the second year in a row. She will compete at Forest Highlands GC in Flagstaff, Arizona, September 14-19.
The Eckelkamp name is wide-spread around the Washington, MO area and Franklin County for that matter. A number of Eckelkamp’s make up the membership at Franklin County Country Club as well. Monday, August 12th was a special day for Kayla and Ryan Eckelkamp, no relation by the way, at WingHaven Country Club as both advanced to their respective U.S. Mid-Amateur Championships in qualifying.
Kayla was one of three ladies to attempt to qualifying, actually 2 as one withdrew before the event. She would eek out the one qualifying spot by a shot with a 3-over 75 to get by Caroline Rouse. Eckelkamp qualified in 2018 to play at Norwood Hills Country Club as well. The 2019 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur is at Forest Highlands Golf Club in Flagstaff, AZ September 14-19. As Kayla was wrapping up her round, Ryan Eckelkamp just happened to be making the turn at WingHaven. The two were chatting about Kayla advancing, Ryan was pushing his own clubs on a push cart and away went Kayla to push his cart for the back 9. Ryan would come in posting a 2-under par 70 and find himself in a 3-way tie for the final 2 qualifying spots. John Ehrgott, Chicago, IL, would earn medalist honors with a 3-under par 69 over the 7,084 yard WingHaven setup. Joining Eckelkamp at 2-under was Chris Kovach and Pat Britt. Back to 18 the 3 would go for a playoff to decide the final 2 spots. Kovach would roll in a birdie putt to grab the 2nd spot. Eckelkamp and Britt moved down to the 10th hole to continue the playoff. Eckelkamp, with Kayla still alongside pushing his cart, would make a par while Britt made bogey, earning Ryan a trip to the 2019 U.S. Mid-Amateur. Britt would be the 1st Alternate. In another playoff that was going simultaneously, Sean Brennan grabbed the 2nd Alternate in a playoff with Hunter Parrish. They both had rounds of 1-under 71 on the day. The 2019 U.S. Mid-Amateur will be conducted at Colorado Golf Club in Parker, CO September 14-19.

On The Greens... LENDING A HELPING HAND by Chris Finnerty Golf Course Superintendent Bogey Club/Log Cabin Club
The people in our industry are a strange bunch. We get up at the crack of dawn, work all day in the heat and humidity, work weekends, watch the turfgrass struggle day in and day out through the St Louis’ summers, watch as big rain events wash out bunkers (yet again) and sometimes cause flooding, etc., etc, etc. Yet, even after all of this - along with lots of complaining and self-pity - we recoup in the Fall and Winter and come back for more year after year. The question is, Why? I am sure everyone has their reasons. It’s for the love of the game, the challenges of producing good conditions for the golfers, the serene beauty of a golf course in the early morning and early evening, the camaraderie with the staff, and so on. Another reason may be the relationships that we form over the years with the many other Supers, Assistants, Staff Members and Vendors who work in our area, day in and day out, to give our golfing community the best conditions possible. We have a pretty tight-knit group in the St. Louis area. We all try to help each other out when possible with advice, sharing solutions to our many challenges, sharing equipment, or simply lending an understanding ear when someone needs to vent. This season brought some extraordinary challenges for some members of our golf course “Community.” The maintenance building at St Peters Golf Club experienced a major fire which destroyed the building along with most of the equipment. Several of our local vendors and superintendents stepped up to lend equipment so the maintenance staff could keep the operation going. Crystal Springs, as many of you may know, was underwater for extended periods and suffered severe damage to some of the turf. Again, several superintendents and vendors went to the course to help organize a plan for restoring the turf. Some even furnished equipment and donated their time to help seed. These are just two examples of how our “Community” sticks together to help each other. This kind of support happens all the time. It’s not just significant issues like floods and fires that bring out the best in our group. It’s also the smaller problems that come up every day. I got the idea for this article during the three very early mornings I spent at Aberdeen mowing greens for the Metropolitan Amateur Championship. I am not patting myself on the back for volunteering. I actually enjoyed the reprieve of mowing greens on someone else’s golf course. I bring this up for another reason. On the second morning, I returned to my course to find an irrigation leak. The temps that day were supposed to be in the ’90s, and we needed to get the irrigation back up and running as quickly as possible. Upon finding out we did not have the necessary part to make the repair, I called my neighbor at the club across the street. Not only did he have the part we needed, but he drove it over personally. We were back in business, ready to battle through another hot afternoon of keeping the greens happy. The golfers out there may ask, “what does all this have to do with us?”. The fact is that when we help each other, it resonates on to the facilities that you play. Let’s say I’m having trouble with my greens and my neighbor across the street had similar issues. If he found a solution that solved the problem and he shares it with me, it’s win-win. I improve my greens, and the golfer has better putting surfaces. When we help each other out, we are helping the Game. Whether we are at a private club or a public course, have 9, 18, or even 36 holes, have a large or a small budget, we all have our ups and downs, and at times question our reasons for staying in this profession. What is important to remember is that we are all in this together. Maybe that’s why keep doing it.

St. Louis Golf History - Ellen Conant -
Not everyone is destined to be a leader. Even fewer can set new standards for those who follow in their footsteps. However, Ellen Conant was such an individual, in ways one might not imagine. A graduate of Vassar, she served as President of the St. Louis Alumni in the 1950s. At the same time, the St. Louis CC member began competing in Women’s District events. Playing in the same era at Marilyn Herpel, Jeannie Dobbin and Susie Driscoll - each past champions - in the last three years of the 1950s, Conant was the most dominant among those who teed it up. Having finished second to Driscoll in 1956, Conant approached the 1957 championship at Norwood with renewed vigor. Reaching the finals once again, this time she downed Norwood’s Mrs. David Mitchell 2&1 over Mithell’s home course. In 1958, over the hills of Sunset CC, Conant once more faced another Norwood member, Kathy Fawcett, in the finals. This match was even closer as Conant claimed a 1up win. Going for her third victory in a row, something only accomplished by Sara Guth in the 1930s, and Betty Jane Haemerle in the 1940s, the 1959 contest would be held over the demanding Normandie layout. Algonquin player Mrs. Calvin Howard would reach the finals and become Conant’s final victim as she took a 7 and 5 victory. Going for a fourth victory, Conant was medalist in 1960 at Meadowbrook. However, the title would go to Marcella Rose, representing Crystal Lake, as she downed Doris Phillips in the finals for her first Women’s District title. Conant had lost in the quarterfinals to the youthful Phillips from St. Clair CC, 2down. In 1976, as Director of KMOX’s Call For Action program, she was among the first to push for the Missouri Legislature to pass legislation allowing for a small claims court. That same year, she resigned after five years as a member of the St. Louis County Board of Jail Visitors over conditions at the County Jail in Clayton. She served as the first woman director of a St. Louis bank at Charter Bank of Ladue and was a director of the non-profit Coro Foundation, focused on leadership training in public affairs. In 1982, she announced that she would run against Democrat Betty Van Uum for the 3rd District seat on the County Council. In the General Election in November, the novice politician defeated Van Uum by approximately 1,500 votes. In 1983, Conant came out in favor of the County building golf courses in three County Parks. In the end, only the course proposed for Queeny Park was not built. In 1990, she became the first woman to chair the St. Louis County Council. She stepped down from the Council in the fall of 1990. Ellen Conant (right) presents the inaugural trophy named in her honor to champion Ellen Sedgwick.

The Metropolitan loses a good friend with the passing of Jerry Higginbotham Jerry Higginbothan was one of the “Park” players, always ready to make the trek to Forest Park for a game. With the formation of the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Associationin the early 1990s, Jerry was one of the early supporters who helped champion the organization. Those were the days when most of the MAGA events were held at a combination of public and private courses. Jerry, who was also on the MAGA Board of Directors in those beginning years, continued to urge players to compete in the Metropolitan events, regardless of where they wer held. From the 1970s to the 1990s, he was a frequent entrant into the Publix Tournament, teeing it up in qualifiers, along with playing in a number of charity events. A teacher and then administrator with the Special School District, he volunteered his time during the summer months to rating hundreds of courses for MAGA, while also serving on the Association’s Rules Committee. After retiring from the Special School District at age 54, he continued his golfing passion, working for American Golf, which at the time managed the Forest Park courses. With that, Jerry played almost all his golf over the Park. In 1990, he qualified for the U.S. Senior Amateur, posting a round of 76 over St. Clair Country Club. A year later, in 1991, he was among the first group of public course players invited to compete in the St. Louis Men’s District Golf Association Championship, and was one of three from that group that advanced to match play. In August of 1991, at the first Metropolitan Amateur, Higginbotham’s name would be among those taking part in the inaugural championship. In 1993, at the U.S. Senior Amateur Qualifying at Glen Echo, he not only qualified, but was also medalist, coming home with a round of 73. In 2005, at the MAGA Awards Reception, Jerry was honored for his many years of dedication to the game with the Association’s Meritorious Service Award. Along with a couple of aces he earned along the way, through 2010, his name continued to be found among those teeing it up in area events.

Lake Forest CC to Host 2020 Metropolitan Open Lake Forest Country Club Excited to Host Professionals from All Over St. Louis, MO – For fourteen (14) years the Country Club of St. Albans has hosted the Metropolitan Open Championship on its Lewis & Clark Course. However, due to an opportunity to host the 2020 NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s Championships around the same time as the Open, the venue for the 2020 championship is making a change for the 15th edition. Lake Forest Golf & Country Club in Lake St. Louis, MO has been chosen and enthusiastically agreed to host what has become the premier State and Regional Open in the Midwest June 16-20, 2020. Mel Rector, Lake Forest Country Club member, has led the charge for the club to host this premier event. In a statement from the Lake Forest CC Open Committee, “Lake Forest Membership is proud to be chosen host of the 15th Metropolitan Open, June 16-20, 2020. By hosting this prestigious event, Lake Forest continues its tradition of hosting championship golf events such as the Nike Tour (now known as the Korn Ferry Tour) and has hosted several USGA Qualifiers and MAGA championships, along with most recently the 86th Ladies National Golf Association Amateur Championship. This opportunity will allow Lake Forest the chance to showcase its Championship Course to some of the very best professionals and amateurs from across the country.” Lake Forest is no stranger to professional golf. From 1994 to 1996, Lake Forest was a host on the Nike Tour to the Nike Gateway Classic. Brad Fabel (1994), Chris Smith (1995) and Tim Conley (1996) were champions of the Nike Gateway Classic at Lake Forest CC. The Gary Kern design plays to over 7,050 yards and is traditionally known in the region for exceptional putting surfaces that can be very demanding. “Lake Forest has been an exceptional member club of the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association since our inception in 1992, playing host to many MAGA championships and USGA qualifying rounds since that time,” commented MAGA Executive Director, Curt Rohe. “The initial excitement from Mel and Lake Forest to host what is essentially a professional golf event has been overwhelming positive and we expect the 15th Open to not miss a beat coming to a new venue!” The 2018 Open brought in a record number of entries, 187 to be exact. The field of 156 players was made up of 141 professionals from 30 states and Australia and 15 amateurs. Professionals played for a total purse of $105,000 and Logan Montgomery (Tulsa, OK) came away as champion and the $25,000 first prize. The Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association conducts ten (10) championships, ten (10) USGA qualifying rounds and its Amateur Series of events each season. MAGA provides the USGA GHIN Handicap Service to 140 member clubs across the St. Louis region and Southern Illinois. Additionally, MAGA is the regional authority on the Rules of Golf and Amateur Status. For more information, visit www.metga.org.
