Curt’s Comments Greetings MAGA members! I blinked and August flew by...actually, another summer flew by. It has been another awesome season of MAGA championships and events, but we are not quite finished up. MAGA kicked off August with the 28th playing of the Metropolitan Amateur at Country Club of St. Albans. Big feather in the cap of Curt Rohe St. Albans for hosting the Association’s two Executive Director “majors” this season. Drew Pranger came back and captured his second Amateur and joined Don Bliss, Dave Estes and Kyle Weldon as multiple time Jim Tom Blair Trophy winners. He and Skip Berkmeyer had a great battle down the stretch at St. Albans. Three wonderful USGA qualifiers were conducted in August with the US Senior Amateur, US Mid-Amateur and US Women’s Mid-Amateur qualifying rounds. The US Senior Amateur was played at Ballwin Golf Club and was fantastic bringing a USGA qualifier to one of our 9-hole facilities for the first time. I would be re-missed not to mention the PGA Championship, wow! While MAGA, or I personally, had any formal role in the PGA, it was truly a remarkable week for golf in St. Louis. I originally had not planned on attending on the weekend, but then had an offer to go on Sunday which I took. It was exhilarating to say the least to walk around Bellerive, hear the roars you normally hear on TV and get sucked into the middle of Tiger mania on Sunday of a major. I am so thankful I went and experienced that atmosphere. Congratulations to all involved and a week I will forever remember! This is the last monthly issue of The Metropolitan as we go back to our bi-monthly rotation through the off-season. Plenty of events on our plates coming in September and October. The U.S. Women’s MidAmateur will be played at Norwood Hills and I am excited to be part of the USGA Rules Team that week assisting. I hear Norwood Hills CC is in impeccable shape so should be a great week to showcase another of St. Louis’ great clubs. The newly named Thomas O. Sobbe Cup Matches will wrap up at the end of the month with the “Final Four” at Glen Echo Country Club. The updated Playoff results can be found later in the issue. The “Final Four” will take place September 28th and the new Sobbe Cup Trophy is completed, see the picture with the results. As always, thank you for reading. Enjoy the end of the golfing summer and please check in with us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to keep up to date with what is going on around with MAGA!

Rules Corner Where to Drop: Lateral Water Hazard & Cart Path Nearby. I encountered a situation this summer that I think is still confusing for most players to handle when determining where to drop a ball: When a shot crosses a Lateral Water Hazard right next to a cart path. The Player involved was not sure where to drop since he knew he could potentially get Relief from the cart path, but I informed him, you still measure out two club lengths, even if this results in dropping on the cart path. Of course when he dropped, the ball bounced wildly in one direction, but I made it clear to him- do not attempt to touch or catch the ball until it has traveled more than two club lengths, as this is a penalty (for influencing the movement of a ball in motion). If you lose the ball after it rolls into the hazard, you can substitute another one. After two drops, neither of which resulted in the ball staying within two club lengths of where it struck the ground, we determined a spot to place it on where it made contact with the cart path and that became the new position of the ball. Then you can determine, if you choose, a Nearest Point of Relief off of the cart path to get Relief. The lesson here is to follow both procedures to get the right result. As many of you know, the Rules are getting a major overhaul for 2019, such as:
• Up to 3 minutes to find and identify your ball (as opposed to 5 minutes) • You can drop a ball from knee-height (as opposed to shoulder) • You can repair spike marks and other damage on the Putting Green, without fear of repercussion But one the most interesting changes (and one that meant the most to me because I wrote the USGA last year to suggest this) is that you may have other options when you can't find your ball, or you realize that it may have gone out-of-bounds and you didn't previously hit a Provisional Ball (meaning you will be making the long walk back to the tee). The Rules now provide, only by Local Rule, that you can drop in the area where your ball is likely to be (adding a 2-stroke penalty). The procedure involves estimating the spot where ball is likely to be, or to have crossed the boundary line, finding a spot on the edge of the fairway that is equidistant to the hole, and then dropping between those two points, no closer to the hole (the USGA has this procedure readily available on their website). This option is only available by Local Rule, and it is not to be used for higher levels of competition, but it is good to potentially have another option than to take the dreaded walk back to the tee, apologizing to the group waiting there for you. What’s the Ruling? Two situations took place at the recent PGA that had folks scratching their heads? Let’s describe these and see what you think! During Friday’s second round at the PGA, Jon Rahm hit his tee shot on the par-5 17th hole, which ended up in the thick rough just a few yards off the fairway. The hole marshalls apparently did not see where his shot ended, so as Rahm approached, they began looking for it. A rules official was called and Rahm told the official that he believed his shoe did touch the ball as he was looking for it, but that it did not move. However, the official assessed Rahm a one stroke penalty since in the officials mind, he caused the ball to move. Rahm then asked the official if he could clean his ball. He was told that he could not. Was the official correct in assessing the penalty and should Rahm have been allowed to clean his ball? The second situation involved Shane Lowry at the par-3 16th hole on Sunday. After a wayward tee shot, Lowry’s ball ended between the stands to the right of the green and a television camera tower, with about 8-10 feet between the two. Both are deemed to be Temporary Immovable Obstructions for the championship. (TIO) Where his ball was positioned, Lowry was not able to take a direct path toward the flag, so he requested relief from the grandstand. However, taking nearest point of relief - two club lengths from the spot resulted in the stairs leading up to the camera tower to possibly impede his backswing. In the end, the officials did not permit him to take a drop further away from the tower, which Lowry requested as complete relief. Lowry elected to play his shot from the original location. Was this the correct decision? (Answers and explanations on page 17)

Langley and Long Secure PGA Tour Cards for 2019 Scott Langley and Adam Long, two former MAGA champions, both secured their PGA Tour cards for 2019 by finished within the top-25 money winners on the Web.com Tour. Langley, 29, winner of the 2008 and 2009 Metropolitan Open, is also a former NCAA Individual champion. The University of Illinois graduate had an outstanding amateur career, which included competing in the US Open and Masters in 2010, among his many accomplishments. He finished third on the Web.com money list for 2018. Long, 30, won the MAGA Junior in 2003 and the Metropolitan Amateur in 2008. The former Duke player turned professional in 2010. Since then he competed on the eGolf, Nationwide and Hooters Tours, in addition to the Web.com. In 2011, he took part in the US Open at Congressional CC. He had 5 top-10 finishes in 2018, finishing 13th on the Web.com money list. The Metropolitan congratulates our former alumni for this achievement, wishing them a successful 2019 on the PGA Tour. 5

MAGA Amateur Pranger Claims Second Amateur Crown Drew Pranger did on Saturday what only three others have done before him winning his second Metropolitan Amateur Championship and having his name go on the Jim Tom Blair Trophy a second time. Pranger joins Don Bliss, David Estes and Kyle Weldon as multiple time winners of the Amateur. Pranger was 1-shot back of Berkmeyer starting the day and paired with him in the final pairing. They battled back and forth and went to the 17th tee tied at 2-under for the championship. Crimson Callahan also saw his name in the lead at one point through the proceedings; however, bogeys at 15 and 17 coming sealed his Drew Pranger championship at 1-under and a share of Runner-Up finish with Berkmeyer. Pranger would birdie 3 of his first 5 holes on the back 9 to get to 4-under and the lead. However, bogeys at 15 and 16 sent him and Berkmeyer to 17 tied. Berkmeyer pulled his tee shot left and was behind a tree causing him to have to punch out to the fairway. Pranger would put his approach shot on the green about 45 feet away. This is where the tides took a major turn. Berkmeyer, left with a par putt watched Pranger roll in his 45 footer for a birdie to get to 3-under. Berkmeyer would miss his par chance and Pranger had a 2-shot advantage going to the closing hole. Each with excellent drives on the 486 yard home hole at St. Albans, Berkmeyer was forced to attack the “Sunday” back right hole location on 18. His approach looked brilliant through the air but was a bit long and actually went through the back bunker. Pranger put his approach shot in the middle of the putting green and while making a bogey would claim the victory. Pos. US Women’s Amateur Championship Port Qualifies for Match Play with 71-72 Qualifying Rounds The Golf Club of Tennessee played host for the 2018 U.S. Women’s Amateur. By virtue of her victory in the 2016 U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur, Ellen Port gained a berth into the championship. Seven-time USGA champion saw this as her opportunity to test her game against the new, young crop of collegiate and high school stars, most half her age. The scoring was keen as +3 or better would be required to move forward to Match Play. As the most senior player in the field, Port knew she had to play well. Coming off a very good outing at the inaugural U.S. Senior Women’s Open, Ellen felt that her game was ready. Opening with an even par round of 71 - with four birdies and four bogey’s - her second round found her at 3-over on the front nine before posting two birdies and seven pars for her 1-over round. In Match Play, Ellen would meet Dylan Kim from Texas. Kim spent two seasons playing for Baylor, where she helped lead them to their first Big 12 Conference title and entry into the NCAA Championships. After that season, she transferred to Arkansas after evaluating Clemson, Oregon, and Arizona. She competed in the 2017 U.S. Women’s Open at Bedminister, N.J. and qualified for the 2018 U.S. Women’s Open.
Ellen Port shades her eyes as she watches her tee shot.
Kim struck first as Ellen made bogey at the third, followed with a birdie at the par-3 fourth. Ellen bounced back at the fifth with a birdie to move to 1-down. Kim birdied the sixth to go 2-up. A bogey by Ellen at the tenth put Kim 3-up before Ellen birdied the 11th. However, another Port bogey at the 13th, followed by Kim’s birdie at the 14th seemed to seal Ellen’s fate. The match ended at the 15th with Kim taking a 4 and 3 win. Nevertheless, Ellen accomplished something that had not been done in over 25-years when she made Match Play at age 56, tying Anne Quast Sander, who qualified in 1993, for that honor. Port Par Kim

USGA Championship Qualifiers/Competitors Qualifying for a National Championship is quite an accomplishment for any golfer. However, if we take a look back when there were just a handful of these - the U.S. Open, U.S. Amateur, U.S. Women’s Amateur and the U.S. Public Links - it is somewhat easier to have that opportunity today with 14 USGA championships. Below are the dates during which the 14 current USGA championships began (along with the four no longer contested) and below that, a list of the top area players ** and the number of times that they qualified for and/or competed in one of these. St. Louis Golf History - 1908 Western Open -
Willie Anderson (above) and (below) at left, with his good friend Alex Smith.

Page 1
Golf in St. Louis was still relatively new in 1908. Yes, Glen Echo had hosted the 1904 Olympic Golf Matches, but they were all amateurs. Area professionals had organized several local contests, marked by solid play. However, the area had yet to see the best professionals arrive to challenge our courses for a title. It was in this environment that the St. Louis Golf Association, led by Normandie’s president Albert Lambert, approached the Chicago organization about hosting the annual event in 1908. In late January, the Western Golf Association approved the event for Normanide, with a June date planned. Among those entered included the defending champion, Bob Simpson, a former professional at the Field Club and St. Louis CC, Otto Hackbarth of the Field Club, Robert, David and Jim Foulis (who designed Normandie), Fred McLeod, Alex Campbell, Laurie Auchterlonie, Willie Anderson and Gilbert Nichols, also formerly pro at St. Louis CC. While Auchterlonie shot 74-73 the first day, it was the man in second place, Willie Anderson - four-time US Open Champion - who finished his day with rounds of 76-74, who most feared. Trailing behind were Campbell and Hackbarth (153) and McLeod and Nichols (156). The second day of play showed it was consistency that in the end proved the key to victory. The third round found Auchterlonie ballooning to a 79, then a 76 in his fourth round to finish tied for fourth position. Anderson put up a 75, then followed that with a 74 for a 299 total. McLeod, who opened with an 81-75, came back with two rounds of 72. However, before the championship was determined, it would come down to the final hole. With McLeod playing ahead of Anderson, his four at the last hole gave him is 300 total. Campbell arrived at the 18th next, missing a birdie putt, placing him next with a 301 total, tied with Nichols, who also missed a short putt for burdie on the closing hole. Anderson arrived at the tee for the closing hole needing a four to tie McLeod and a three to claim victory. After a nice drive, his ball was just short of the green, in a little valley below the green. Anderson pitched to within two feet of the hole, then rolled in his putt for a three and a 299 total. In 1908, Anderson won representing the Onwentsia Club in Chicago. In 1909, he came to St. Louis CC as an instructor. The following year, he passed away at age 31 in Philadelphia.

Non-Qualifiers A little history was made Monday as Ballwin Golf Club, the 9-hole municipal club in West County, hosted a USGA championship qualifier conducted by MAGA. The 2018 U.S. Senior Amateur Championship qualifier was played on Monday where 41 teed it up in hopes of securing two qualifying spots into the U.S. Senior Amateur. Tim Barry, from Parkville, MO, came away with medalist honors shooting an Even par round of 71 over the 6,998 yard Ballwin layout. Three tied for the 2nd qualifying spot at 73 and went to a playoff. The 2018 U.S. Senior Amateur will be played August 25-30 at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, OR. Joe Malench, from Edwardsville, IL outlasted Steve Groom in three holes to claim the 2nd qualifying spot. Malench, 58, will play in his 2nd USGA championship having qualified for the U.S. Amateur 40 years prior at the age of 18. He remembers it well, losing to John Cook 5&3 who would go on to win the U.S. Amateur at Plainfield Country Club. Groom, from Raytown, MO would get the 1st Alternate and Jay Jordan, from St. Louis and Norwood Hills CC, was the 3rd player at 73 and would earn the 2nd Alternate position. Many thanks to Ballwin Golf Club staff for their hospitality and the City of Ballwin for their excitement in allowing us to conduct a USGA qualifier at their facility. The golf course was in magnificent condition! UPDATE From the U.S. Senior Amateur Edwardsville’s Joe Malench shot rounds of 78 - 70 for a 157 total, but missed advancing to match play as a score of 152 was needed. Kansas City’s Tim Barry also missed reaching match play, posting rounds of 82 - 85 for a 167 total. Taylorville, IL native Dave Ryan, the 2016 Senior Amateur Tim Barry, Parkville, MO, earned medalist honors at the US Senior Amateur Qualifying at Ballwin GC.
Champion at Old Warson, lost in the third round.

US Amateur Championship Berkmeyer goes 77-69 at U.S. Amateur to Qualify for Match Play The 118th U.S. Amateur was played at Pebble Beach, August 13-19, and two players from the Westwood qualifier, Skip Berkmeyer and Trey Winstead, both posted scores good enough to move on to match play. Local champion Skip Berkmeyer began his play at Pebble Beach, posting a 6-over 77. However, Skip bounced back at Spanish Bay with a solid 69 on the second day of medal play, finishing at plus-3 and easing into match play. There, he met Shintaro Ban, a UNLV senior, who was fresh off a terrific year for the Running Rebels. The match was all square through eight holes. Skip went 2-up after the tenth, then Ban went on a birdie run, posting three over the next five holes to take a 1-up lead. He held that through the 18th, despite Skip making birdie on the par-5, when Ban matched him, to win the match. As you can see from the card below, not only did Skip play extermely well, he also made par on one of the most difficult stretch of holes in golf; the 8th through 10th, while his opponent was 2-over in the same stretch. His medal score, including concessions, would be 1-over par, with Ban posting an even par round! Of the other qualifiers from Westwood, only Trey Winstead (LSU) (+2) moved on to match play, where he lost in the Round of 64 to Raul Perda (Jacksonville University) of Mexico in 23 holes. Results for the other area qualifiers were: Ethan Berkmeyer hitting his second to the par-5 sixth hole at Pebble Beach. Brue, Bradley (+22), Cole Harris, Indiana (+14) and Kory Franks, Missouri State (+14), with scores of +4 or better needed to qualify for Match Play. It is worth noting that there was a playoff of 24 players at +4 attempting to qualify for a single spot in Match Play! Even to the casual golfer, it’s plain to see that the U.S. Amateur is turning into an elite collegiate tournament, with only a sprinkling of career amateurs qualifying in many years. For this reason alone, Skip is to be congratulated for not only qualifying, but making it into match play. Skip, who has qualified for 32 USGA championships, just competed in his 30th USGA championship.

Answers to Rules Questions on page 4 Was the decision to penalize Rahm for moving his ball correct? Should he have been allowed to clean his ball? The rules official has to make a judgment call in this situation. If, by stepping on the ball it was moved from its original location it must be replaced. However, if the original position cannot be determined, then it must be as near as possible to the original position. In either case, a 1-strke penalty is awarded. However, when a player is assessed a penalty in this type of situation, he is allowed to clean his ball. So, the offical was correct to asses the penalty stroke but incorrect in not allowing Rahm to clean his ball. Was the Officials decision regarding Shae Lowry correct? Should he have received complete relief and where would that position be? This relates to what constitutes “complete relief.” The rules of golf state: When a player is taking relief from an immovable obstruction, he must determine the point where there is no interference from the lie of ball, stance, and area of intended swing. For example, if the ball lies on a cart path, the ball must be dropped at a point where the cart path does not interfere with the lie of the ball, his stance, and also the area of intended swing. If the ball comes to rest in such a position, it must be re-dropped (Rule 20-2c(v)). Lowry’s position with the officials was that the point where he felt he had “complete relief ” was further from the original location of his ball than the officials were allowing based upon his “area of intended swing” in order to have an unobstructed path toward the flag. According to Lowry, rather than provide a ruling, they told him it was up to him to determine where to play from. He stated that one official told him he had to drop at a point that was located at a nearby tree. After about a 10 minute discussion, he chose to play from his original position, making bogey from there. 17

US Women’s Mid-Amateur Qualifying Eckelkamp Captures Medal at St. Louis CC with a 73; Four Qualify for the Women’s Mid-Am Championship at Norwood Hills, September 22-27. Given what August is normally like in St. Louis, Monday, August 20 was nearly a perfect day! The rain the night before had softened the course a bit, however, a gusty wind, at times, made the course a real challenge, especially for those who had not played the C.B. Macdonald gem in the past. The fourteen ladies who took to the first tee, came from Iowa, Ohio, Kansas and New York to join the Missouri contingent for the four available spots from the area for the championship in September. In the end, it was steady Kayla Eckelkamp from Washington, Missouri and Franklin County CC, who got it right, coming in with a 73 and earning the qualifying medal. Joining her with their qualifying letters were Kallie Harrison, former Ball State golfer, of Norwood Hills with a 77, Michelle Butler, a former Mizzou golfer from Columbia, MO, representing Old Hawthorne, with a 78 and Kelli Kirchoff, another former Mizzou golfer from Wentzville, who plays out of Persimmon Woods, with a 79. The two alternate spots, with scores of 80, went to Allison Mayborg of Cincinnati, Ohio and Caroline Rouse of New York.

On the Greens... Thank Your Superintendent... Turfpath.missouri.edu… I sent this link too many times to weary and concerned supers over the past month. Things were looking a little funky during my travels throughout the Valley. My Hummert Macro Scope diagnosis does not instill as much faith in costly decisions, like the good doctor’s do in Columbia. The above is a link to the Disease Diagnosis Clinic run by Dr. Miller at the University of Missouri. Dr. Miller said it best a few weeks back and I think the message bears repeating. He writes…“In many cases, a diagnostic analysis and microscopic scan can’t absolve the weather cards this region has been dealt… seven-two off suit and in for the big blind. Likewise, magical elixirs from sprayer boom nozzles don’t alter the growing environment or provide instant recovery. The fact of the matter is that European born bentgrass prefers 55 – 75 F, which was nowhere to be found in spring 2018.” Our dry fall compounded by superfluous golf play, the second coldest April on record, and the warmest May on record, did not do golf course superintendents any favors. The most experienced turf managers I know have done their fair share of hand wringing and forehead rubbing this spring and summer of 2018. This year has been a struggle. Yes, I have seen more goosegrass on greens than I have ever seen in my 30 years in this business. Yes, I have seen more crabgrass breakthrough than ever. Yes, I have seen more nematode diagnosis, pythium root-rot diagnosis, summer patch diagnosis, etc. The perfect storm culminated this year and I am of the opinion that compromised root systems made for a wounded gazelle on the Serengeti scenario. With that said, many courses are still licking their wounds while dealing with scarred and blemished turf. However, cool nights, shorter days, a reduced sun angle, seed introduction and some natural rainfall will help with recovery. In the meantime, thank your super and their staff…thank them often. Their job is so very difficult even when our fickle weather does cooperate! •

Metropolitan Senior Championship Persimmon Woods - August 28-29 The opening round was punctuated by very hot temperatures coupled with high humidity, taking a toll on player’s ability to score. However, Ollie Crow came in with a solid 72 to grab the early lead on day one. Day two began with torrential rains, delaying play until the afternoon and forcing the Championship division to be pushed back to a shotgun start on Thursday. Buddy Allen, who recently qualified for the US Mid-Amateur, added another honor to his name, posting a 68 over the tough Persimmon Woods layout, overcoming a first round 76, to claim the George F. Meyer Trophy. Just a stroke back, with rounds of 76-69, was Gene Hart from Aberdeen. Norwood’s Jay Jordan added a 72 to his first round 75 to take the third position.

The PGA Championship The PGA Championship Not Only Lived Up To Its Billing, But with Record Crowds and a Great Leaderboard, It Becomes Legendary! Beginning on Monday morning, the fans began pouring into Bellerive. Players on the practice tee looked up to see crowds 2-3 deep to watch. A few players remarked that they couldn’t wait to see how many showed up when the action started on Thursday. As it turned out, they would be blown away! The rain on Tuesday softened an already soft course, with Wednesday practice rounds the first opportunity many players had to see the entire course. Turns out, these guys don’t often miss a thing. On Thursday, with former St. Louisan Michael Block, a qualifying club professional from Southern California hitting the first tee shot, things began in earnest. It wasn’t long before everyone realized that the scores this day would be low, very low. Gary Woodland, a long hitter from the west side of Missouri, posted a 64, an indication of what was to come. Tiger struggled on his first nine (the back), but hung in to post an even round 70, as did Adam Scott and several others. However, with 42 rounds in the 60s, shooting par on this day left you behind the crowd. When Woodland put up a 66 on Friday, his 130 total set a new PGA 36-hole record. However, not far behind stood Kevin Kisner (131), Ricky Fowler (132) and Brooks Koepka (132), with seven others within 5 shots, as 62 rounds in the 60s were posted, with the cut coming at +1. Yet, the second round would not conclude until Saturday morning with play halted at 3:30 when a strong storm moved over the course. The third round saw Woodland come back to the field with a 71 and Kisner shooting a 72. This opened the door for those closest to the lead with many jumping right in. Tiger found new life and posted his second consecutive 66, while Adam Scott came in with a 65. However, it was Koepka, with a 63 in his second round, followed by a 66, who assumed the lead at the end of the third round, followed closely by Scott 2 back. Sunday would see some amazing golf as Tiger, wearing his traditional red, started with birdies on two of the first three holes. Yet, when Koepka birdied the first, he moved to 13-under and seemed in control. By the 14th, Scott had pulled even with Koepka at Spectators at the par-4 15th cheered when Tiger stuck his approach 14-under. When Tiger birdied the 15th, he moved to to less than a foot, making birdie and, at the time, pulling to within 13-under, and with another birdie at the 16th, he sent the one shot of the lead. crowd into a frenzy. At the 17th, a poor tee shot forced him to hit a great recovery, but could only manage par on the par 5, missing a golden opportunity to close the gap. However, he lit the crowd one last time with a birdie at the home hole to move to 14-under. Koepka, hearing the crowd, kept his composure. A great approach at the 15th set up a birdie. An even better tee shot at the 16th, moved him to 16-under. After a two putt par at the par-5 17th, he walked to the 18th with a 2-shot lead. His drive flew the bunkers down the left side, leaving him a wedge into the green. Two putts later, he was the new PGA Champion! In the end, for many players, it was a day of missed opportunities. Justin Thomas got it to 11-under before a pair of bogey’s ended his chances to repeat. Ricky Fowler also missed opportunities, letting his hopes of a major be dashed. Likewise, Jon Rahm, Adam Scott, Thomas Pieters, Francisco Molinari and Woodland all found Bellerive a bit more difficult on Sunday. However, the real winner was not just Koepka. It was also Bellerive, the St. Louis golfing community and all those who worked tirelessly to make the event such a success.

The selections were: Cole Hammer, 18, of Houston, Texas; Collin Morikawa, 21, of La Canada Flintridge, Calif.; and Justin Suh, 21, of San Jose, Calif.
