Curt’s Comments HAPPY NEW YEAR! Whoa, where did 2018 go? I’m sure if you look back at this issue the last 5 years I’ve said the same thing…a broken record, where did the time go? Another season come and gone. 2018 was another fantastic year for MAGA! We crowned great champions, sent several golfers Curt Rohe to participate in USGA championships and saw a new breed of golfers participating in the Executive Director Amateur Series! There were so many highlights from the 2018 season…a couple of my personal favorites were: Country Club of St. Albans hosting both the Open and Amateur in the same season, a true testament to their support of MAGA and championship golf; Ballwin Golf Club, the first 9-hole facility to host a USGA qualifying round in this region and the remarkable play of Buddy Allen who ran away with the Senior Player of the Year! The outlook for 2019 is already very bright! We recently announced Aberdeen GC will host the 29th Amateur Championship, returning to a public venue for the first time since 2001. The Roger Null Internship really caught traction in 2018 and we have our first intern in place for 2019, Matt Ridings a junior at Southeast Missouri State University. Rebounding from the success of the US Senior Amateur qualifier at Ballwin GC, they will host the inaugural Metropolitan 9-hole Championship in June 2019! A “Championship for Every Golfer” where men, women, junior and seniors will all be eligible to compete in one championship. Youth on Course is already breaking stride heading into 2019 with the Golf Foundation of Missouri and the First Tee of St. Louis joining MAGA to grow Youth on Course and provide very affordable golf to Youth on Course Members. Most importantly, the new Rules of Golf have taken effect as of January 1. It should be an exciting season conducting championships under the new Rules and educating the golfers along the way. Several clubs have reached out and we are preparing on making several visits to our member clubs this spring to share the new Rules to our members. Personally, as I head into my 20th season with MAGA, I am grateful for every one I have met during this journey that have allowed me to grow and make a career out of golf. From starting at Boone Valley as a caddie to being a Boatwright Intern with MAGA and now as Executive Director I have had many, many mentors along the way! Not sure I ever share this, but almost 70% of you are opening this newsletter when you receive in your email, pretty remarkable statistic! As always, thank you for reading.

Rules Corner Dropping the Ball in the “RIGHT WAY” The modernization of the Rules project by the USGA and R&A took more than five years. As a result, the Rules of Golf are now more player-friendly in many respects. However, there are some changes that all players should adopt (as of January 1, 2019) to avoid unnecessary penalties. One of the fundamental changes involves how a ball lifted under a Rule should be returned to play. Note that there is a penalty if you drop instead of place or place instead of drop. In taking relief in situations involving such things as abnormal course conditions (including immovable obstructions, ground under repair, dangerous animal situations and animal holes) or an embedded ball, or penalty relief situations (such as penalty areas, unplayable balls, lost balls, stroke & distance) the procedure includes dropping a ball in the “right way”. Below are some slides we use in “outreach” programs on the 2019 Rules for players that cover this subject:

The members of the Rules Committee of the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association in St. Louis are currently participating in Workshops conducted by the USGA and PGA on the 2019 Rules and are being recertified to officiate at tournaments. Please send us your Rules questions. We will be happy to respond and help you understand the changes. Alvan Sage Member, Rules Committee

In Memoriam Jeffrey Robert Johnson On December 4, area golf lost not just a great player, but also an individual who touched so many in his career. From his days at Parkway West, on to the University of Missouri - where he captained the team - Jeff brought a ray of sunshine to those he interacted with, whether on the course or in his business. After college, JJ to his friends, won events over a thirty-six-year span, beginning with the Men’s District in 1982, with his last being the Metropolitan Senior in 2013, with numerous titles in the years between. Upon winning the Metropolitan Senior, he commented to this writer that winning a Metropolitan Amateur Championship had long been one of his goals. At the MAGA’s annual awards reception that year, where he was presented with his plaque as Senior Playor of the Year, his pride in achieving that goal was evident to all in attendance. A longtime member of Bogey Hills CC, his many friends there recalled the great times they had with Jeff, both on and off the course. A great family man, he will be sadly missed by his children, his siblings, family, and his many friends.

MAGA Amateur Awarded to Aberdeen GC for 2019

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 29th Amateur Championship Returns to a Public Facility for Third Time Aberdeen Golf Club Will Host August 1-3, 2019

The Metropolitan Amateur Championship was started in 1991 because there was a need for a regional championship bringing the private club and public course golfers together to compete. A year later the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association was founded. Since its inception, the championship has been conducted primarily at private club venues. In 1995, the late Craig Schnurbusch captured his one and only Jim Tom Blair Trophy at Spencer T. Olin Golf Course. That championship is still known as maybe the hottest championship ever played. Scott Fann would earn the title in 2001 at Gateway National Golf Links. It was time for the Amateur to return to a public facility and we are excited to announce Aberdeen Golf Club has been chosen as host of the 29th edition of the regions most coveted trophy, the Jim Tom Blair Trophy! General Manger Greg Jansen commented on Aberdeen hosting the Amateur, "We are extremely honored and excited to be hosting the 29th Metropolitan Amateur Championship. Knowing that Aberdeen will be the 3rd public facility to host this great Championship makes it even more special. We are very much looking forward to having the regions best amateurs compete on the course we love so much.” The links style course, designed by Gary Kern, can stretch to over 7,200 yards and will be played at a Par 71. Aberdeen is known for its firm , and windy conditions, emulating true links style golf found in Scotland. Drew Pranger (pictured right) captured his second Amateur championship in 2018 at the Country Club of St. Albans. Pranger fired a 2-under total over 54holes to hold off Skip Berkmeyer and Crimson Callahan who finished 1 shot back. Pranger will seek to become the first 3time winner of the Metropolitan Amateur Championship at Aberdeen. “Aberdeen Golf Club, and its owners Rockyney and Ann Dollarhide, have supported MAGA by hosting several MAGA championships and USGA qualifiers since opening in 2001. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to bring our flagship championship to Aberdeen in 2019,” stated Executive Director Curt Rohe. The Amateur Championship is a 54-hole stroke play championship. A full field will play 36-holes over Round 1 and 2 before a cut to the Low 40 scores and ties will play the Final Round on Saturday, August 3 to crown a champion. If you should have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact Curt Rohe, Executive Director, via email at curt@metga.org or phone at (314) 567-MAGA.

MAGA’s New 9-Hole Championship for 2019 The Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association will add to its championship schedule in 2019. Ballwin Golf Club will host the inaugural Metropolitan 9-Hole Championship on Saturday, June 29th next summer. On the heels of a very successful U.S. Senior Amateur Qualifier conducted at Ballwin GC in 2018, the first USGA qualifier ever conducted at a 9-hole facility in this region, MAGA is introducing a 9-hole championship for golfers in 2019. Ballwin GC was the obvious choice and elated to be the first 9-hole facility to host a new MAGA championship. “We are honored to welcome the first Metropolitan 9-hole Championship in 2019. Hosting this event in collaboration with MAGA is not only an honor for the Ballwin Golf Course, but for the entire region. It’s a chance to showcase the best of golf and the best of St. Louis. We can’t wait to see how many people Play 9 with us this year.” said Ballwin PGA Professional David Furlong. The unique part of this 9-hole championship will be it will be open to everyone! There will be Men’s, Women’s, Senior and Junior Divisions available in both Gross and Net. If you are a member of MAGA, have an active GHIN number through a MAGA Member Club, you will be eligible to participate. And, the competition will be 9-holes! Executive Director, Curt Rohe commented on this new championship, “This will truly be a championship for everyone! Anyone will be able to find a spot to participate in the Metropolitan 9-Hole Championship. This day will celebrate not only a new championship for MAGA but the USGA Play 9 initiative as well.” The Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association conducts eleven (11) championships, ten (10) USGA qualifying rounds and its Amateur Series of events each season. MAGA provides the USGA GHIN Handicap Service to 140 member clubs across the St. Louis region and Southern Illinois. Additionally, MAGA is the regional authority on the Rules of Golf and Amateur Status. For more information, visit www.metga.org.

MAGA President Stan Grossman He’s handed out hundreds of trophies to accomplished players through the years as President of the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association. Yet, he asks little in return; only that players continue to enjoy the game he loves so much. However, like many involved in the sport, it wasn’t always his first love. In the beginning, to paraphrase James Earl Jones from Field of Dreams, “It was Baseball!” Like many growing up during the Great Depression, youthful players were drawn to the ball diamond. Sure, it was more like what was presented in Sandlot, a makeshift field, with the bases laid out with whatever items were available. The balls - few were white generally had the stitches coming loose with the winding peeping from underneath the covers. Still, you were playing baseball in the bright sunlight of the day. Life was good!! Stan was a pretty fair player. Make that, a pretty good player. A friend had a father connected with the St. Louis Browns. The club approached Stan and asked if he would spend time catching batting practice. After a year doing that, the Cardinals got wind of Stan, and they also asked him to catch batting practice for them. For the next two summers, he split his time at Sportsman’s Park with both clubs. After graduation from Soldan High School, he was signed by the St. Louis Browns to a minor league contract. For the next seven years - except for two he spent (1953-54) serving his country in the Army - Stan did what many did in those days, looking to make their mark with a team and earn a trip to the Major Leagues. For most, including Stan, it was a dream, as the climb from “D” ball to the Majors was fraught with obstacles. During his final season in 1956, Stan was part of the Danville Leafs of the Carolina League. As a “B” level team for the then-New York Giants (It would be in 1958 that they made the move to San Francisco), Stan hit .252 in over 400 at-bats. However, there were three others on the team — Willie McCovey, Tony Taylor, and Jose Pagan — who would shine, eventually earning their way to the Majors in 1959. When the 1957 season rolled around, the Giants wanted Stan to report to Florida, with the other minor league players. However, Stan was determined to head toward Arizona, where the big club spent the spring. Hall of Fame pitcher Carl Hubbell was the Giants director of player personnel at that time, and he told Stan that it was Florida where he was wanted. Stan thanked him but added that it was either Arizona or nothing. The evening before he was to leave for Florida, Barbara asked Stan if she should help him pack. With that, Stan left baseball behind and began the next phase of his life. He went to work for his uncle, selling hospitality and foodservice equipment. After six years, he was at the top of his game, and he was ready to make the transition to being his own boss. He and Mike Katzman, another salesman from Kansas City, got together on a Saturday morning in Columbia, forming the Katzman-Grossman Manufacturers Representatives business. As with most things Stan ventured into, the business became a success, due in no small part to the work-ethic and relationships built over the years. Today, the company is owned by Stan’s son Tom, who began helping around the office at the age of 6, and Steve Baker from Kansas City. By 1964, with the business doing well, Stan became one of the founding members of Forest Hills CC. However, except for business reasons, Stan only played his golf on weekends, ensuring the weekdays were filled with customer activities. It was at Forest Hills that the amiable Grossman crossed paths with Dutch Harrison, the club’s professional. Having just returned from California, where he had been the professional at the Olympic Club, Dutch was the perfect individual to set the tone for the new club. Easy going and with a gentle southern drawl, Dutch, though several years off the Tour, still had enough game to challenge anyone who wanted to test their mettle. It would be with Dutch that Stan would travel to Florida, California and points in-between, teeing it up at Doral, at the Jackie

Gleason Classic at Inverrary, with Bing Crosby at his Pebble Beach Stan was honored by the USGA Clambake, and with so many others. Stan became somewhat of a regular with Dutch at these events with many celebrities greeteing with the Joe Dey Award in him with, “Hey Gross, how you doin’.” 2011. The award is presented It was also in 1964 when Stan first met Hord Hardin. Forest to individuals in recognition of Hills had asked Stan to be the club’s representative to the St. Louis District Golf Association, which Stan gladly accepted. It was their meritorious service to the several years later that Hardin, who had been USGA president, game as a volunteer. mentioned to Stan that he should get more involved with golf at the national level. It wasn’t long after that when Stan received a call from a reporter at the Post-Dispatch congratulating him for being appointed as a committee member for the U.S. Junior. The funny thing was, Stan knew nothing about it. Hardin had him appointed, and just like that, Stan began his long association with the USGA. In 1992, as the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association was being formed, Stan was approached by Tom O’Toole Jr. about becoming part of the new group. Stan begged off for a few years as he was nearing retirement and wanted to focus on business. However, by 1998, now retired, Stan accepted the position as president of MAGA, a position he’s held since. A veteran Rules official, Grossman worked at both the U.S. Open and the U.S. Senior Open from 1996 to 2007. In all, he’s worked 34 U.S. Junior’s, 11 U.S. Open’s, 6 U.S. Women’s Opens, and 5 U.S. Amateurs. Grossman has also conducted numerous qualifying events for the Metropolitan and for USGA championships. At one U.S. Junior in Portland, Oregon, Stan recalled watching 12-year-old Tiger Woods play. With Woods 2-down at the 16th, he leveled the match at the 18th hole before winning at the 19th. In 2007, Stan received the USGA’s Ike Grainger Award for 25 years of service to the USGA, and in 2011 he was further honored with the Joe Dey award for meritorious service to the game as a volunteer. Stan was married to Barbara for 62-years before she passed away in 2016. Besides Tom, Stan has a daughter, Amy Bennett, who is married to the Senior Rabbi at Shaare-Emeth Temple, James Bennett, and he has five grandchildren to keep him busy. When you see Stan at one of the MAGA or USGA events this coming season, remember to say hello. He’s already ready with a friendly smile and perhaps a great story.

St. Louis Golf History - Audrey Faust Wallace & Virginia Pepp

-

If there were ever two more opposite individuals, it might well be Audrey Faust Wallace and Virginia Pepp. Yet, during their careers, 1922 to 1935, these two ladies “owned” area women’s golf. During those 14-years, one of them was in the Women’s District Finals 13 times. Wallace won five titles, the same number as Pepp. They met in the finals on four occasions as well, each winning twice. Miss Pepp would finish second only twice, with Mrs. Wallace landing in the runner-up position five times.

Audry Faust Wallace

Audrey Wallace was the daughter of restauranteur Edward Anthony Faust and Anna Louise Busch, and the granddaughter of Adolphus Busch. She married Mahlon B. Wallace Jr. in 1924, the social event of the season. Miss Pepp’s life was much different. As one of seven children of IrishPolish descent, the Pepp family grew-up off Kingshighway in north St. Louis. Despite having two golf professional-brothers, Frank and Johnny Pepp, Virginia had little interest in golf growing up. But when they went into the service in 1917, thirteen-year-old Virginia pickedup a set of clubs from the garage and began to play at nearby Sherman Park, and later in Forest Park. Self-taught, she quickly developed into an excellent player and in 1920 won the Women’s City Championship, and then in 1922, at age 17, she won her first District title, defeating a former District and State Champion Mrs. E. Lansing Ray. A working girl, Virginia was employed at Scruggs, Vandevort and Barney, an area department store, in their sporting goods department.

Virginia Pepp with Ralph Guldahl

While Virginia could ill afford the time or money to practice and play with the Country Club set, Audrey grew up with the grounds of St. Louis CC almost as her backyard. In 1921, at age 18, she fell under the tutelage of Stewart Maiden, the legendary mentor of Bobby Jones and Alexa Stirling, as he spent two seasons at St. Louis CC. She would be a semi-finalist in the Women’s District that year as she began to show promise. As her game progressed, she steadily improved her standing until the breakthrough in 1924 when she captured the District crown with an upset victory over Virginia Pepp in a match that was considered, at the time, as perhaps the best having played between two area women. But instead of letting their rivalry create a barrier between them, they nurtured a friendship that would last for years. Audrey recognized early-on the talent that existed in Virginia, and such was her personality that she did what she could to assist her. To help Virginia work on her game, Audrey would send her car into the city to bring her out to the club where she had the opportunity to sharpen her skills. This went on for years as they battled on the course and then shared a cool drink afterward. In 1931, Benny Richter, the pro at Triple A, asked Virginia to be an instructor at the club, teaching men and women the game. This likely made her one of the first women golf professionals in the country!

Audrey devoted much time to charitable causes including the Red Cross. In 1950, she served on a committee to raise funds for the new USGA headquarters in Far Hills, NJ. and was a volunteer scorer at the 1948 PGA at Norwood Hills.

Roger Null Internship Awarded METROPOLITAN AMATEUR GOLF ASSOCIATION 11777 CLAYTON ROAD | ST. LOUIS, MO 63131 WEBSITE: WWW.METGA.ORG

CURT ROHE; EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR PH: (314) 567-MAGA | EMAIL: CURT@METGA.ORG

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Matt Ridings Named 2019 Roger Null Intern St. Louis, MO – The collaboration effort between the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association (MAGA) and the Mississippi Valley Golf Course Superintendents Association (MVGCSA) to offer an internship opportunity to a turf student was announced in 2017. MAGA and the MVGCSA are both excited to announce that Matt Ridings has been chosen as our first Roger Null Intern. Ridings, a Pattonville High School graduate, is a Junior at Southeast Missouri State University pursuing a degree in Agribusiness: Horticulture. His ultimate goal is to one day work in turfgrass management as a superintendent of a golf course. As the Roger Null Intern, Ridings will work with the maintenance departments of Old Warson Country Club, Algonquin Golf Club and The Quarry at Crystal Springs in 2019 to gain a vast spectrum of experience at both the private and public club level. His time will be concentrated on very specific tasks at crucial times of the year at each of these facilities. Additionally, Ridings will spend time during his 3 months with the MAGA staff in conducting MAGA championships. Seeing and working with the maintenance departments to understand what MAGA asks of our member clubs in preparing a golf course to conduct a successful championship. “MAGA and the MVGCSA have a very close working relationship and we feel the Roger Null Internship program is going to give this young man, and many in the future, a unique opportunity to work with a range of facilities in one summer” commented MAGA Executive Director Curt Rohe. “Add in the time spent with MAGA in conducting our championships, this experience is going to be extremely valuable!” Roger Null was born in Le Mars, IA in a golfing family. He attended Iowa State University, after which he completed stints as Golf Course Superintendent at The Arsenal Club (Rock Island, IL), Cedar Rapids CC (Cedar Rapids, IA), Old Warson CC (St. Louis, MO and Norwood Hills CC (St. Louis, MO). Roger has performed consulting work for many golf courses in St. Louis and the Midwest, including Boone Valley GC near St. Louis, where he also served as General Manager. “The Roger Null Internship program is a tremendous opportunity to any student aspiring for a career in the golf industry”, stated Chuck Gast, MVGCSA Director of Operations. “The MVGCSA is proud to partner with MAGA in providing this ‘hands-on’ program where the intern will experience numerous aspects of specific, day-to-day golf course operations at select, premium golf courses in the St. Louis area maintained by some of the top Superintendents in the entire industry”. The Mississippi Valley GCSA (MVGCSA) was established in 1945 to promote and maintain the highest professional standards of service, commitment and conduct among the members of the turfgrass industry. The MVGCSA offers a strong fellowship among all members, as well as a great deal of assistance in resolving problems that may arise at a member’s golf course. There are numerous educational opportunities within the association to help us maintain our goal, “Dedicated to Better Turf.” Visit www.mvgcsa.com for information. The Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association conducts ten (10) championships, ten (10) USGA qualifying rounds and its Amateur Series of events each season. MAGA provides the USGA GHIN Handicap Service to 140 member clubs across the St. Louis region, Central and Southern Illinois. Additionally, MAGA is the regional authority on the Rules of Golf and Amateur Status. For more information, visit www.metga.org.

On the Greens... Despite the Weather... “If you don’t like the weather, just wait 5 minutes” is an expression that holds truer here in the St. Louis area than almost anywhere on earth. When you think about the true golf meccas of the country; Palm Springs, Phoenix-Scottsdale, South Florida, Northern Michigan, the Monterey Peninsula, the one thing they all have in common is consistent weather during their respective golfing seasons. It is this condition that allows for such pristine conditions day-in and day-out. Here in St. Louis, we live in a climatic area known as the transition zone. In a nutshell, St. Louis rests in a confusing geographic situation with regards to turfgrass, and specifically, finely manicured turfgrass. You see, we’re not exactly in the North, and we’re not exactly in the South. Enter our conundrum as Golf Course Superintendents. What type of turf should we choose to grow here? Should it be warm season or cool season, as none of these are suited to our climate? Zoysia fairways do well for the summer but go dormant when temperatures cool in October. Bentgrass stays green just about year round but can be exceedingly difficult to manage when summer temperatures are at their peak. Fescue does well for the rough, as does bluegrass, but both have their issues. Ryegrass would be nice for half the year while bermuda will thrive in the heat but it won’t stay where you want it to and goes dormant much like zoysia. Typically, the choice is made to maintain several types of turf on a given property, each with their pros and cons, none of which enjoy similar tastes where the climate is concerned. So, now we have our ‘Heinz 57’ variety of turfgrass on the property which typically includes zoysia fairways, fescue or bluegrass rough and bentgrass putting surfaces. Problem solved, right? Enter our wonderful weather. We enjoy four distinct seasons here in the Lou, or at least we’re supposed to. More often than not, summers are long as are our winters, and the spring and fall seem to be increasingly short preambles to the following season. Making matters worse within each season, due to our climate zone, we can have varying temperature extremes. For example, on October 6, 2018, the high temperature was 90 degrees, just six days later on the 12th, our high temperature was 59 degrees, a 31degree change, and absolutely shocking to our turfgrass. We see this all the time; big thunderstorms followed by extreme heat, cold snaps in late spring, warm-ups in February, heat waves during July, and frozen conditions for weeks at a time, only to be followed by a week of 70-degree weather. Just writing this causes me to throw my hands up in the air and shake my head - what’s a Superintendent to do? I guess that’s the point of all of this. Over the years, I’ve come to know most of our area Superintendent’s; hardworking, dedicated, thoughtful people, who against all the odds and weather, present some very exceptional conditions for golf here inarguably, the most difficult place to manage turfgrass in the country. I would add, you might have to be a little-off to take on such a challenge, but the tough days are what makes it so gratifying. A book could be written about the environmental challenges here in St. Louis, and maybe someday it will be. For the time being though, this sorry little article, I hope, gives each of you reading this a slight insight into the pressures our local climate presents to area Superintendents. Despite the odds and the weather, golf courses in the ‘Lou’ are alive and well. Tip your cap to your course Superintendent when the weather isn’t cooperating, there will be plenty of opportunities, I promise! Rob Kick, GCS Algonquin Golf Club

MAGA Champions Review Since 1991, the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association has garned much praise for how their events are presented as well as for the quality of the champions who have earned the titles. As we end the 2018 season, MAGA’s 27th year, we thought we’d look back on the past to recognize our champions.

Records and Trivia From the 2018 PGA 1. After an opening round of 74 on Thursday, Tony Finau followed on Friday with a round of 64, which included a PGA-record 10 birdies. His round included only 4 pars. 2. Charl Schwartzel and Brooks Koepka tied the PGA record for the lowest rounds in a Championship with their second round 7-under 63s, on Friday. They tied rounds set by Raymond Floyd (1982), Vijay Singh (1993), Brad Faxon (1995) and Thomas Bjorn (2005). 3. The field had 92 players from North America (1 from Canada), 34 from Europe, 15 from Asia, 7 from Oceania and 3 from South America. 4. Gary Woodland made five birdies on the back nine during round one to finish with a 6-under 64. 5. Gary Woodland’s two round total of 130 (64-66) set a PGA Championship record for 36 holes. 6. Eight past PGA Champions missed the cut, including John Daly (1991), Jason Dufner (2013), Phil Mickelson (2005) and Padraig Harrington (2008). 7. By winning the PGA and the U.S. Open in 2018, Brooks Koepka became the first player to do so since Tiger Woods accomplished that in 2000. 8. Tiger Woods’ 64 on Sunday was the lowest final round score of his career. 9. In winning, Koepka became only the fifth American player to win three majors before the age of 29, joining Jack Nicklaus, Jordan Spieth, Tom Watson and Tiger Woods. 10. Koepka’s 72-hole score of 264 broke the previous record of 265 set by David Toms in 2001, and equaled the lowest total in major championship history, tying Henrik Stenson’s score at the 2016 Open Championship. 11. Among those contending for the title on Sunday, only 2018 Open Champion Francesco Molinari (10-under) did not record a bogey on his card. 12. Among the players finishing in the top-10 for the Championship, six countries were represented: United States, Australia, Spain, Italy, Belgium and England. 13. Except for 2001 winner David Toms, every PGA Champion from 1997 forward competed in the 2018 PGA Championship at Bellerive. 14. Fourteen players in the field played Bellerive previously in a championship, that being the 2008 BMW/FedEx. 15. Ten players in the 2018 field were among the 70-player field for the 2001 American Express Championship, which was cancelled due to events of 9/11. 16. Three players, Davis Love III, Vijay Singh and John Daly were in the field for the 1992 PGA and the 2018 PGA. 17. Several players from 1992 were part of the broadcast teams on one or more of the networks. These included: Frank Nobilo, Brad Faxon, Ian Baker-Finch, and David Feherty. 18. At the long drive contest, taking place on the tenth hole on Tuesday, players hit tee shots, which had to remain in the fairway to be counted. Despite the wet conditions, Bryson DeChambeau won the event with a drive of 331 yards, with Peter Uihlein (328 yards) placing second and Tony Finau (324 yards) taking the third spot. 19. Over 750,000 sq. ft. of space was constructed within the Club grounds for hospitality areas, sponsor tents and Member-sponsored areas.
