Curt’s Comments Greetings and Happy New Year! As I sit here and construct my final thoughts of the 2019 season in our final issue, I look back at this being my 20th season with MAGA! Two of those were in 1998-99 as an intern, but still I reflect back on 20 seasons. Curt Rohe Executive Director

2019 was an exciting season with great venues and new champions! We added the 9-Hole Championship at Ballwin Golf Club and expanded the Four-Ball Championship to 36-holes this season...both very well received. After a second unfortunate accident at the former Clayton Road office, MAGA found a new home in the Westport area which has been a great move. As we wrap up Volume 6 of The Metropolitan with this issue we continue to receive great feedback from our readers. Another thank you to Jim Healey for his work as our Editor as we are working on some new things for Volume 7 in 2020! But now is the time to look ahead to 2020. Big changes are on the horizon with the World Handicap System launching on January 1 and new technology with GHIN for our clubs and golfers! All great changes to bring the handicap system under a world-wide code, just as the Rules of Golf are now. Later in the newsletter are great resources you can access on our website to educate yourself. Please go take a look! From a championship outlook, the Open Championship is moving to Lake Forest Country Club and the Amateur will be played at Meadowbrook Country Club. The 9-Hole Championship is back at Ballwin GC and we are excited to add the Southern Illinois Amateur to the 2020 schedule at Green Hills Golf Course in Mt. Vernon, IL! The 2020 schedule is available in this issue, another fantastic lineup of venues for MAGA championships and USGA qualifying rounds. So, for the final time in 2019, thank you for taking some time to read The Metropolitan and again, Happy New Year!

Best New Courses Feature Area Architect Art Schaupeter’s Colorado Design Ranked #3 Best New Private Course for 2019 Just behind Gil Hanse’s Ohoopee Match Club in Georgia at #1, and the Tom Fazio Summit Club at #2, St. Louis’ only full-time professional architect, Art Schaupeter, had his TPC Colorado design ranked as the third Best New Private course for this year by Golf Digest’s latest rankings. Schaupeter, who has also done work in the area for Forest Hills CC, along with recent renovations at Westwood CC, is also the man behind the University of Missouri’s The Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia. In 2004, he crafted Highland Meadows (Golf Digest’s #5 Best New Public in 2005) north of Denver. So pleased were the developers that when they looked to create a project along McNeil and Lonetree Reservoirs in Berthoud, they called upon Schaupeter once again. During the course of the project, the owners contracted with the PGA to make their layout a TPC-licensed facility, necessitating changes to several holes to accommodate the demands of hosting professional events. With the completion of the course in 2017, the 7,991-yard par 72 design hosted a Korn Ferry Tour event in 2019, with a return engagement scheduled for 2020. A member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, his projects have taken him to Texas, Kentucky, and Illinois, besides his work in Colorado and the St. Louis area. His recent renovation of several holes at Westwood CC has also garnered praise from the membership. He took two holes that were relatively non-descript - the par-5 fifth and the par 5-8th - and reworked both to the delight of Westwood’s members. Also, bunkers across the course were updated with the Better Billy Bunker System, enabling them to handle the St. Louis rainfalls much better. To read more about TPC Colorado, click HERE. For details on his renovation at Westwood CC, click HERE.

Tower Tee Update In addition to his projects on the previous page, Schaupeter is also involved with the new owners of Tower Tee In April 2018, it was forecast that the legendary practice facility on Heege Road would likely close at the end of 2018. It was noted that the owner, Steve Lotz, had been notified that the grounds were being sold to a developer for housing sites. It appeared that the range, putting green, miniature golf, batting cages and the 18 hole, par 54 2,575 yard golf course would be going away. Founded by Steve’s grandfather Roy in 1963, his father Dick ran the facility for years until Steve took over. It appeared that the 55-year-old facility was on its last leg. Unfortunately, the Lotz family never owned the grounds. It was owned for years by the Pulitzer family, then passed on to other companies as the Pulitzer’s sold off pieces of their publishing and broadcast empire. By 2018, Tegna, the parent company of KDSK-TV, put the ground up for sale for $4.77 million. The lease expired in October 2017, but Tegna extended it through June 2018. However, an outcry by nearby residents in Affton, as well as golfers from across the area, soon caused those plans to be placed on hold. Plans for 99 single-family homes and 59 attached row homes were put forth by McBride Homes and J.H. Berra, which were being submitted to St. Louis County for zoning approval. It was at that time that things began to change. Nostalgic Michael Burton, who spent countless hours at Tower Tee, began a campaign to save the beloved facility. While Lotz and his wife Janice were preparing to move to Florida, Burton formed “Keep Affton Green and Family Friendly #savetowertee.” When an auctionwas held in July 2018, with everything available for sale, Burton knew that the Tower Tee he knew would soon be no more. However, even this failed to stop his effort to find a new use for the land. While it initially appeared a nice effort, in the end, Burton accomplished what few thought would take place! In May 2019, Steve Walkenbach and his business partner Mike Shamia emerged and struck a deal with McBride to purchase the site, giving them the opportunity to revive the facility. The plan is to open the new facility in the fall of 2020.

The NEW Tower Tee When completed in the fall of 2020, the NEW Tower Tee may very well become THE very best golf practicee facility in the area! A bold statement? Certainly. But when you see the design plans for what is included in the 26-acre site, you will likely become a believer. (See page 8) What will be at the new facility? First, one of the best designs for a golf practice facility in the area. There will be 78 hitting bays - a double-decker on one end - enclosed bays for cold weather, grass hitting areas, target greens and more. The facility will have a 4,000 sq. ft. clubhouse, not just a snack bar, but a place you can sit and enjoy a beverage after practice, or after playing a round on the new course. Yes, there will be a beautiful 9-hole par-3 course that will use holes from famous courses around the world as models. The only thing that is different will be the scale of each hole, ranging from 55 yards to 150 yards. There will be a Postage Stamp, a Biarritz, a Redan, Eden, Short, Golden Bell, and others, named for classic holes. Schaupeter is also thinking about how golfers want to practice. So while the largest area is for those looking to hit full irons and drivers, for those wanting to work on their short game - wedges and such - for chips and pitches, there will be a separate area just for that. Schaupeter has divided these into situational and precision chipping and pitching areas, depending on what will help your game best. The practice range will extend out to 250 plus yards. However, Schaupeter is putting in “grade breaks” about every 25-yards, as well as signage, making it easier to see if your shot carried 175 or 190 yards, instead of just guessing at the yardage. Finally, a large 2,000 sq. ft. practice putting green, with plenty of level areas to work on your alignment and slopes to develop your touch on the tricky downhill-sidehill putts! Not into golf? How about miniature golf? Yes, that is also included. For those who are into playing Foot-golf, Schaupeter is including that on each hole, with not just one, but two separate Foot-golf hole locations on the closely mown areas set along the golf greens. If the batting cages were what you remember, they will be there as well. In short, nearly everything at the old Tower Tee will be included, plus a host of new options. To see a preliminary layout of the NEW Tower Tee, flip over to Page 8. Be prepared to be amazed!!

St. Louis Golf History - Doris Phillips -

In the early 1950s, Doris Phillips, playing out of St. Clair CC, began competing in earnest, first in area competitions, then, over the next two decades, became what was termed a “touring tournament player” as she took part in events across Florida in the winter and then in Missouri and Illinois in the spring and summer. Born in 1932, she grew up across the street from St. Clair, walking across the road to practice. Her father was an electrical contractor, so Doris was free to compete without the worries of maintaining a traditional work schedule. In her early 20s. she earned a pilots license, allowing her to fly her plane to events outside the area. Her first significant win came in 1955 when she won the Women’s District Handicap. Following that victory, she looked toward national events as well, competing in the Women’s Trans-Miss, the North and South Amateur, and the Women’s Western Amateur nearly every year through the 1960s. She qualified for the U.S. Women’s Amateur first in 1958 and five more through 1972. In 1961, 1962 and 1963, her play earned her a spot in the Women’s U.S. Open. While many of her wins came in the Florida events, she also won the women’s District four times from 1963-1970, including three in succession in 1963-1965 while also losing in the finals five times. In the eleven finals from 1960-1970, Doris was in the final match nine times! In the Southern Illinois Amateur, she took the title three times as well, and the Illinois Women’s Amateur on three other occasions. When the LPGA began their run of events here from the mid-1950s through 1970, Doris was always in contention for low amateur. She competed in the inaugural event in 1954, then each one, except for 1956, through 1970, earning low amateur honors from 1965-1968. Around 1962, she joined Norwood Hills, competing out of there for the next two decades. Doris was a strong, talented player, and in 1965 she was considered a candidate for the Curtis Cup, but that never materialized. Early in her career, it was Marcella Rose who battled her, with Marcella coming out on top in two Women’s District Titles. Barbara Berkmeyer also seemed to have Doris’ number as she defeated her in the 1967 and 1968 finals. On the national scene, she continually ran into Judy Bell, a very good amateur player from Wichita, who would go on to become a two-time Curtis Cup player and president of the USGA in 1996. Bell would get the better of Doris on most occasions, but in one instance, at the Women’s International 4-Ball, Doris teamed with Joanne Goodwin, with the duo defeating Bell and Barbara McIntire for the title. An accomplished jazz pianist, Doris played at the Bel Air West in the 1960s, and also at dinner clubs in Miami, West Palm Beach and Ft. Lauderdale during her Florida trips. Through the 1980s, Doris might be found playing the piano for diners at the Chase-Park Plaza, Schneithorst’s, or the Ramada Inn South, as well as with a group at the Lake of the Ozarks. Doris (l) as low amateur in 1966, with tournament champion Kathy Whitworth.

On The Greens... What does the Maintenance Staff do during the Winter? Anyone who spends just a little bit of time on the golf course can’t help but notice maintenance workers tending to the many tasks needed to provide quality course conditions. During the peak of the golf season, staff may spend 50...60 even 70 hours weekly, helping to keep the course in its best condition possible. They work early mornings and late afternoons as well as weekends and even holidays to keep things looking great. But what do they do during the off-season? While staff may begin to work a little more manageable or predictable schedules during the winter months, they by no means run out of things to do. As play begins to drop off with plummeting temperatures, many area clubs and courses ramp up their activities on the property. Turf maintenance staff perform tree removal and pruning once the leaves have fallen. Construction projects, however big or small, in many cases get started, as area Superintendents complete project work to ease the impact on players while managing the elements. Snow removal, landscape bed clean up, accouterment refurbishment, preventive equipment maintenance, building maintenance, drainage, and planning are all items on the list the staff is tasked with completing during the winter months. One very important item, which probably doesn’t get enough attention, is education. Education is Crucial to the talented men and women who manage area golf properties. Keeping up with new trends, equipment, chemistry, and University studies helps to keep the courses in our area looking great all year long. Many area Superintendents attend the Golf Industry Show and Education Conference annually. Our industry’s marquee event provides hundreds of educational topics along with the most innovative equipment a turf management strategies available similar to our Golf Shop counterparts PGA Merchandise Show. Locally, the Mississippi Valley Golf Course Superintendents Association hosts an annual educational event, covering topics a little closer to home. Staff members spend hours undergoing equipment and safety training in an effort to maintain safe workplaces as well as become proficient in basic first aid should the need arise. Pesticide recertification for applicators on each property is a must and ensures proper use of products applied on the course. These and a myriad of other educational opportunities are well attended by our Local Chapter of Turf Professionals and are a testament to their dedication to their profession. Much like an athlete prepares for their upcoming season, Golf Course Superintendents, along with their Assistants and staff train during the off-season, so when the time comes to perform at the highest level, they’ll be ready. -Rob Kick, Course and Grounds Superintendent - Algonquin Golf Club

Ascension Charity Classic The Classic will be the first Champion’s Tour event in the St. Louis Area since 2001, and the first professional event at Norwood Hills since 1973. The release of the 2020 PGA Tour Champions Schedule features two new events, with only one in the United States, the Ascension Classic, to be held September 28-October 4, 2020, at Norwood Hills Country Club. With Ernie Els, Jim Furyk, and Mike Weir scheduled to join the Tour in 2020, and with K.J. Choi and Phil Mickelson turning 50 in May and June respectively, the competition among the players promises to only get better. How the Classic came about is another interesting story. Nearly two years before the announcement, Ascension had been negotiating with the PGA Tour Champions to bring an event to the area. Ascension had been a sponsor of several Champions events at markets across the country where they had hospitals. With the Tour continually looking for new Title Sponsors, around 2017, they approached Ascension about taking the leap to the next level of sponsorship - a Title Sponsor. After looking at several markets, senior executives at Ascension believed that bringing a Champions event to St. Louis, the home of Ascension’s headquarters, made sense. Norwood’s West Course, when played from the “tips” can stretch out to nearly 7,100 yards, long enough to challenge players on the Champions Tour. Also, the spot on the calendar in the first week in October, as the second to last event before the Charles Schwab playoffs begin October 16, is ideal to have the best players compete, as well as players looking to improve their position and get inside the top 72 and qualify for the seasonending event. Finally, with Ascension’s mission to care for the under-served and most vulnerable in our society, the charitydriven event, with key North County organizations intended as recipient’s of the Classic’s success, further strengthens not just Ascension key mission, but also Norwood’s position as an advocate for the community.

About Ascension The Ascension Charity Classic is an official PGA TOUR Champions event, owned and operated by Tournaments for Charity, a St. Louis non-profit. The event will be a 54-hole stroke play tournament featuring 78 PGA Tour Champions professionals competing for a $2 million purse over the Norwood Hills Country Club course. The Golf Channel will broadcast all three rounds to an international audience. The title sponsor is Ascension, a faith-based healthcare organization based in St. Louis. As one of the largest non-profit and Catholic health systems in the U.S., Ascension is committed to delivering compassionate, personalized care to all, with special attention to persons living in poverty and those most vulnerable.

Classic Beneficiaries The three primary groups targeted to receive proceeds from the Classic are Marygrove, which provides treatment and support to young people struggling with the often debilitating emotional and behavioral issues resulting from abuse, neglect and other trauma; Boys and Girls Club of Greater St. Louis, whose mission is to inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need BGCSTL most, to reach their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens; and the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis. As the leading champion of empowerment and opportunity for African Americans, the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis envisions a region where all people: • Are valued members of the community • Can adequately support themselves and their families • Can live in neighborhoods that are vibrant and thriving • Share in the region’s prosperity and well-being

Gateway National GC sold to owners of World Wide Technology Raceway The Gateway National course will continue to operate as it has, with Walters Golf Management continuing to handle management of the facility. “Boosting St. Louis and the Metro East is part of our mission and bringing together the two properties makes great sense,” said Curtis Francois, World Wide Technology Raceway owner and CEO. “Just as our racing venue has evolved into a showplace for some of the greatest racing in the country, Gateway National is a beautiful course that compliments what we are doing next door.” Opening in 1998, Gateway National was founded by developer Tim Crowley and Denny Walters. The links-style, bentgrass course was designed by Keith Foster and Kevin Hargrave. At over 7,100 yards, it has been among the top 2-3 best public courses in the region since it first opened.
