Curt’s Comments Each season I personally put the Metropolitan Amateur Championship at the “peak” of the season, with everything we do year-long going toward the Amateur being the premier and most significant amateur championship in this area. And while we have plenty of events, qualifiers going the rest of the year, it is a gradual downhill slide. The 29th Amateur was no different at Aberdeen Golf Curt Rohe Club. We had a small field - 99 players Executive Director compared to what we have experienced in the past and, unfortunately, that is attributed to taking the amateur to a public facility. Nothing against public facilities, but it is the cold hard truth that there are a number of players who did not play because “they can play a public facility (Aberdeen) anytime” and not for the competition against the best players in this region. I just want to say thank you to Aberdeen, and specifically owner Rockney Dollarhide, for accepting this opportunity to host our flagship event. The staff at Aberdeen took a lot of pride in the weeks leading up to ensure a championship setup was presented to the field and they did that with vigor and excitement. There were many, and I mean MANY, comments during the championship that Aberdeen looked and played the best it ever had! Congratulations to Brad Carpenter on capturing the 29th Amateur Championship! Selfishly, it was a very proud moment for me to have a fellow Washington High School alum win our amateur and present him with the Jim Tom Blair Trophy. As we move into August, and on the that downhill slide I spoke of earlier, it really does not slow down. We have something going on every week in August, including the 27th Senior Amateur Championship at Annbriar Golf Course. Buddy Allen will look to repeat as Senior Amateur Champion this year. The Thomas O. Sobbe Cup moves into the playoffs this month, and those results can be found later in this issue. Not sure I have said this, but a quick thank you to our Mississippi Valley Golf Course Superintendents who have contributed this year with articles on what is happening from their perspective on their courses. There is some really great information being shared by these guys and a great addition the last 2 seasons from this group. As always, thank you for taking a minute to read The Metropolitan, we will have one more issue next month before going into our bi-monthly season. Curt

Rules Corner Line-of-Play Intervention A recurring question at recent tournaments has involved immovable obstructions in the path of intended shots. One player had an electrical transformer box in his way. For another player, it was an irrigation control box. A signpost and ball washer, both cemented in the ground, blocked yet another player’s shot. Their common question: “Do I get line-of-play relief?” The simple answer is “no” (Rule 16.1; except when the ball lies on the putting green and an immovable obstruction on or off the green intervenes on the line of play). So, what are the player’s options? He or she may play the ball as it lies, perhaps altering the shot, or proceed under an unplayable ball option (Rule 19.2, with a onestroke penalty). Having said that, Rule 16.1 allows free relief from the same object for interference with lie of the ball and intended areas of stance and swing. See the pictures left and right.

Free Relief for Lie & Areas of Stance & Swing

No Free Relief for Intervention

One player responded, “Why not? The pros get relief from camera towers and stands in televised tournaments.” That’s true. But, unlike the obstructions mentioned above, which are permanent fixtures on the course, tournament facilities are erected for the competition and then dismantled. They are considered TIOs (temporary immovable obstructions). When the Local Rule for TIOs (F-23) is in effect, free relief is generally available if the TIO intervenes with both the player’s line of sight and line of play to the hole. Note that greenside fans are seasonal fixtures on many courses and often designated as TIOs in competitions.

What about sprinkler heads near the putting green? The answer is no, but there is a Local Rule (F-5) that the Committee may use when putting from off the green is common (e.g., courses in Ireland, Scotland, Florida, Arizona). It allows free relief under Rule 16.1 when the immovable obstruction is in the general area, on the player’s line of play, within two club-lengths of the putting green, and within two club-lengths of the ball. Ryan Sullivan

Ryan Sullivan (above) found his way into his second playoff of the season Sunday at Spencer T. Olin Golf Course at the 16th East Side Amateur. Sullivan was in a playoff in May for the Normandie title; however, this time he capitalized and captured his first MAGA event. Sullivan had rounds of 68-71 for his 5-under total. Buddy Allen started the day in 2nd at -5, which is where him and Sullivan stood after 36-holes. Back and forth the entire back 9, several others were in the hunt and had opportunities. First round leader Alex Ciaramitaro fell back after 3 bogeys on the front but was in the mix until a triple bogey at the par 4 13th. The par 4 13th also would bite eventual champion Sullivan. Sullivan had the lead at -7 but would also make a triple at Hole 13 to fall back. A final birdie at 15 would get him to -5 and he would finish one group ahead of Allen at that number. Allen had birdie looks at 17 and 18, but could not convert. Sullivan and Allen would go back to Hole 18 and with a par on the 1st playoff hole, it would seal the deal for Sullivan.

On The Greens... The More You Know Submitted By – Paul Hurst, GreensPro Do you remember the More You Know? It was a series of public service announcements broadcast on NBC that would feature educational messages. While I can’t recall all of the topics, I do remember that several of them piqued my interest and left me saying, “Hmmmm.” Long before Google and Wikipedia, information seeking took effort and was often sparingly available. Libraries, professional journals, word of mouth and Encyclopedia Britannica were important sources! However, today’s Turf Manager now has access to numerous resources that help them manage our fickle turf here in the Transition Zone. UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI – It was not long ago that Mizzou struggled having a presence with Turf Managers in the state of Missouri and the Metro East. Today our largest state university employs two professor’s that are making an impact. Dr. Lee Miller directs research and extension programs focused towards disease control in turfgrass. Superintendents can send samples of diseased turf to Dr. Miller and get an identification of the disease, and a recommendation for control, in less than a weeks’ time. Not only does Dr. Miller’s department help with disease ID but they also conduct continuing education programs throughout the year either through presentations or Turfgrass Field Days at the Columbia campus. Dr. Xi Xiong is another professor and her research interests focus on turfgrass management and physiology, with an emphasis on best management practices in the transition zone. Xi and Lee are an open book of knowledge and a growing asset for Turf Managers here in the Midwest. GCSAA (GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENTS ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA) – This is our national association available to Golf Course Superintendents. The mission of the GCSAA is to, “serve its members, advancing their profession and enhancing the enjoyment, growth and vitality of the game of golf.” The GCSAA provides a monthly magazine, business support, continuing education and a yearly conference that gathers everyone in the golf maintenance industry. This conference has an unprecedented trade show with acres of turf maintenance equipment/supply and also provides limitless networking opportunities for fellow turf professionals to discuss the business of growing quality turf. MVGCSA (MISSISSIPPI VALLEY GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENTS ASSOCIATION) –The MVGCSA is the local chapter of the GCSAA and I think their mission statement says it all, “The Mississippi Valley GCSA (MVGCSA) was established in 1945 to promote and maintain the highest professional standards of service, commitment and conduct among the members of the turfgrass industry. Membership for the association will be deemed a significant indicator of individual responsibilities, character and professionalism. The MVGCSA offers a strong fellowship among all members, as well as a great deal of assistance in resolving problems that may arise at a member’s golf course. There are numerous educational opportunities within the association to help us maintain our goal, “Dedicated to Better Turf.” The MVGCSA is a fantastic resource for Supers to discuss local issues that may be impacting their facilities. SOCIAL MEDIA – Now more than ever Turf Managers have a forum through Twitter and Facebook where they can openly discuss issues impacting their facilities. Member relations, dealing with the public, disease issues, weed infestations, pond problems, equipment failures, cultural practices, employee struggles are all common topics on turfgrass threads trending on these social media platforms. Despite the more they know, growing and maintaining quality turf here in the transition zone remains a challenge. Superintendents can often only play the hand they are dealt by Mother Nature. Be patient, be appreciative and give your turf manager a hug or a high five. It’s August, they need it.

St. Louis Golf History

- Bob Cochran: The Gray Fox When it comes to discussing the area’s best men’s amateur, the name Bob Cochran is always in the mix. He began as a caddy at North Hills - Norwood Hills today - at the age of 10 in 1923. In 1931, he claimed the Western Junior crown, one of the most prestigious junior events in the country.

The 1961 Walker Cup Team

Born in 1912, the same year as Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson and Sam Snead, one can only wonder what he might have done had he chose a professional career instead of that as a lifetime amateur. Clearly, his success when competing against the game’s best of that era makes one take notice. He won his first of eight District titles in 1933, with the last coming in 1965. From 1939-1969, he qualified for 14 U.S. Amateurs and five U.S. Opens. Beginning in 1969 to 1980, he played in seven U.S. Senior Amateurs and one U.S. Senior Open. He also won a record-tying four Missouri Amateur’s and five Missouri Senior Amateur crowns. In 1946, none other than Bobby Jones invited him to play in the Masters, with Jones playing with him in an exhibition against Porky Oliver and Byron Nelson. When the main event began, Cochran was there for all four rounds. He also competed in the 1961 and 1962 Masters, while playing for the United States in the 1961 Walker Cup, on a team with Jack Nicklaus, Deane Beman and more. The U.S. won 11-1, with Cochran picking up a point in the foursomes event. In 1960, he reached the finals of the British Amateur before falling to Irish legend Joe Carr for the title. He won countless other titles, including two North-South Senior chammpionships in the early 1970s and several local trophies from 1940-1945. In 1943, he played on the PGA Tour as an amateur, winning the Decatur Open with a three round total of 198. In 1945, at the Memphis Open, he finished tied for second behind winner Freddie Haas and a ahead of Byron Nelson, breaking his string of 11 consecutive PGA victories.

Cochran’s British Amateur Runner-up medal

The list of his success goes on and on. However, Bob was also a basketball player, playing for St. Louis U. High and later for St. Louis University. In an early game his sophomore season, he was sent into the game by Coach Eddie Hickey to guard Purdue’s top guard, a three time All-American named John Wooden. As Bob told the story, Wooden showed him very quickly why he was the nation’s best player as he left the gangly Cochran chasing him across the court. Bob was a 70-year member at Norwood Hills, winning their Club Championship 14-times, while not competing every year. In the early 1940s, as the old Meadowbrook Club was experiencing financial difficulties, it was Bob who helped bring together a group of his customers, many of whom were already Meadowbrook members, to form the new Meadowbrook in 1944. In 1971, Bob was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.

Bob Cochran (l) with Jack Nicklaus

In his later years, Bob could be found on the practice tee at Norwood, giving pointers to younger players. By the 1990s, Bob was still shooting his age, but not competing in area events. Bob passed away while on his usual morning walk, with golf club in hand, on April 19, 2003 at age 90.

Metropolitan Amateur Championship With Aberdeen in near perfect condition, and the grasses taller than most players in places, the 41 contestants for the title on Sunday had their hands full. Lost balls, challenging pin locations and gusting winds played havoc with each shot. However, it was the youngster from Franklin County Country Club, Brad Carpenter, a recent graduate from Missouri State, who tamed the course with a solid 206 total. With his lead as much of four strokes during the round, the final tally was a bit closer, thanks in part to a solid performance by Curtis Brokenbrow, an Australian transplant on Missouri Baptist’s squad, who closed the gap slightly till the last putt was dropped. Skip Berkmeyer, a recent qualifier for the U.S. Amateur at Pinehurst, showed that his game is still in top condition as his closing round of 69 left him at 210 for the weekend. In the end, bringing the MAGA Amateur to Aberdeen, the first public facility since 2001, was a great decision by the Metropolitan. Eric “EJ” Brumm - No Mountain to High for Him! Some people might let a handicap get in the way of achieving a goal. However, EJ Brumm is not that type of individual. In fact, he found a way to become part of a World Championship Team filled with such individuals: Winners Each and Every One. For more than 25-years, EJ Brumm has been a part of golf across the area. He continues to arrive at tournaments across the area to compete for a title. He’ll be at the Publinx in May, then on to the Normandie Amateur and then at the East Side Amateur. And while other players look for the sound of applause when they hit a good drive or a solid approach, EJ hears nothing. He is deaf. However, that has not stopped him in any way from becoming a National Champion and part of a United States Championship Team. In 1994, eight deaf golfers, representing the US, Australia, Scotland, England, and Canada, formed the World Deaf Golfers Federation in Battle Creek, Michigan, with the intent to host a World Deaf Golf Championship. The US Deaf EJ Brumm, 2019 National Deaf Golf Champion Golf Association, formed in 1979, quickly became part of the Federation. The first event took place in England in 1995, with a team from the US taking the title. Brumm was a participant on that first USA Team. Early in July, the Ladue grad once again teed it up in the 2019 United States Deaf Golf Championships, held at Lyman Orchards (Robert Trent Jones Course) in Connecticut. His opening round of 75 was low for the day, but an 80 on day 2 put him just one shot up at the midway point of the Championship. A third round 77 found him trailing McGowin Miller by a shot heading into the fourth round. However, a brilliant final round of 70, including a 32 2019 United States Deaf Golf Championships on the back nine - with a birdie on the final hole - put him 2-under par and gave him Lyman Orchards (Jones Course) - Middlefield, CT July 9 - 12, 2019 the Open Division title by a single shot. This also earned EJ another spot, along Open Division Pos.
