June 2019

Curt’s Comments Well, we have made it to the halfway point of the 2019 season! Happy 4th of July to everyone! It continues to amaze me at how quickly these seasons go by. We just started posting scores and dusted off the clubs. June was a busy month; we had another fantastic Metropolitan Open with 141 golf professionals from 30 states and Australia come to St. Albans to compete for the $25,000 first Curt Rohe prize. It was another amazing performance Executive Director by the club, hosting 81 players, caddies, family during the week. The comments from the players are still coming in...the best event and course they will play the entire summer schedule! These are guys playing on the Web. com, oops, the KornFerry Tour, MacKenzie Tour, and even PGA Tour experience. Remarkable where the Open has gone in 14 years. Youth on Course made some significant strides in June. MAGA Youth on Course collaborated with the Gateway PGA Juniors and Golf Foundation of Missouri to provide Youth on Course memberships to their golfers. Our Youth on Course memberships has grown to over 100 golfers all having access to Youth on Course facilities in the St. Louis and Southern Illinois region. We have some more announcements coming very soon on the future of Youth on Course in this area. I must say our most successful event in June was the Inaugural 9-Hole Championship at Ballwin Golf Club. This was a new endeavor for MAGA, and we were ecstatic of the turnout of 44 players on June 29th. The goal of the 9-Hole Championship was to introduce competitive playing opportunities to some new golfers, and that was definitely accomplished. While we also had the likes of Crimson Callahan and David Lucks participate, current and veteran players who have participated in MAGA events for years. Ballwin could not have been more appreciative, and they are ready to see this grow in the future as well. An exciting month ahead as we started with our 20th Junior Championship July 1-2 before this issue. Registrations close for the 29th Metropolitan Amateur Championship at Aberdeen Golf Club August 1-3. MAGA is thrilled to bring this championship, which was started to bring the public and private club golfer together, back to a public facility in 2019. Aberdeen is also very excited to host the regions top amateurs at their facility next month. I would also like to welcome ELCO Cadillac as our new Corporate Partner. You will see more from ELCO starting this month in your GHIN eRevisions, newsletters and featured on myMAGA Mobile App. As always, thank you for taking a few minutes to read The Metropolitan, and if you should have any interest in advertising in this publication, please reach out to Curt at curt@metga.org. Keep it Straight, Curt

On The Greens... The Challenges of Golf Course Staffing Golf Course superintendents are, at their core, problem-solvers. The problems they solve, however, are as different and as varied as the golf courses they manage. You can attribute much of that to location. Disease pressures faced by superintendents in Florida differ greatly from what superintendents deal with in the Pacific Northwest. Courses in the Southwest don’t get enough water; courses in the Upper Midwest probably get too much. Some states have serious legislative and regulatory requirements that turfgrass managers must navigate, while professionals in other states have a much easier road to travel in that regard. St. Louis has always been known as one of the toughest places to grow grass. We are in the transition zone making it hard to grow warm-season grasses and when warm-season grasses are happy, Rob Schaff then cool season grasses are not. Hot and sticky in the summer makes bentgrass suffer, but zoysia fairways will love every minute of it. Northern states can grow all cool-season grasses and be happy while southern states can and usually will grow warm season grasses everywhere. We have to suffer trying to do both. A buddy of mine told me years ago if you don’t like it you better move. Well, I didn’t listen to him and stayed. Someone has too. If there is one challenge common to many superintendents in every corner of the country, it is labor and finding individuals who are willing, able and, maybe most importantly, qualified to do the work required to maintain a golf course. It’s certainly been a top-of-mind issue for superintendents all across the Midwest. There are several reasons for this. Most courses can use 15 or more people to run a facility in the peak season, but when it comes to late fall and into winter, you can’t keep everybody busy. Now you have to lay people off for the winter and only keep 4-6 guys. Hopefully, those guys want to come back, but you never know. That is the juggling you must do. We all wish we could keep everybody year around, but it just doesn’t make financial sense. Every job has its challenges, and it just comes with the territory. The bottom line is superintendents, and their staffs work hard to try and give you the best playing conditions year around. Sometimes it becomes a real challenge, but I guess that’s what we signed up for. Thanks for listening about my rant and raves and go out and enjoy the game, it’s not about the score it’s about having fun. Enjoy your next round. Robert Schaff The Falls Golf Club

Some of Golf’s Low Rounds While players continue to break records in nearly every category, it might be worthwhile to look back on the rounds that were considered “unbreakable” for years. In early June at the men’s collegiate Dogwood Invitational, held at Druid Hills GC in Atlanta, Alex Ross of Davidson fired the round of his life with a course record 57! His round included 13 birdies and an eagle. After a 30 on the front nine, Ross shot a 9-under 27 on the back to produce his historic score. The Invitational is known for low scores throughout its history. Webb Simpson shot a 60 in 2007 during a practice round, finishing the tournament with consecutive 63s to win the title. Rory Hie shot a course record 62 in 2008 to win the same event. You might recall in 2016 when UMSL golfer Markus Lindberg shot a round of 60, which was not only an Arch Cup record, but also made him only the 10th collegiate player to post that score. By the way, he missed a eagle putt on the final hole which would have given him a 59. Homero Blancas had one of the great rounds in golf in 1962, playing in the Premier Invitational amateur tournament over a nine hole course outside of Longview, Texas, at only 5,002 yards and using two sets of tees to play as 18 holes. The Premier Invitational was part of the “East Texas Tour” or the “Barbeque Circuit” which later produced players such as Jackie Burke and Jacky Cupit. His first round that day was posted as a 62, so he was clearly on his game. His second, the record round, saw a 27 for one and a 28 on the other nine, for a round of 55. He hit 17 greens in regulation and had only 20 putts. He recorded 13 birdies and an eagle. It wasn’t until years later when Guinness determined that a course had to be at least 6,561 yards to qualify as a championship layout that Blancas’ round was disqualified. For Blancas, the arbitrary decision by the powers-that-be could not take away one fact: his 55 is the lowest round of golf ever shot! After turning pro, Blancas had four Tour wins and one Senior PGA Tour win. It was said he was more partial to his family and having a good time than any Hogan-type practice sessions. Today, the course is abandoned and even the scorecard and tournament trophy has been lost over time. Auggie Navarro was the golf professional at the Arthur B. Sim Park GC in Wichita, Kansas from 1962 to 1994. He told this writer that he must have played the course a thousand times, but nothing ever happened like it did on a day in 1982 when he was playing with two friends. That was the day he shot a record 57. The course, at 6,055 yards playing to a par 70, was what players typically find in city parks; tree-lined fairways and well bunkered greens. In short, what you see is right in front of you. Like Forest Park without the hills. Birdies on three of his first four holes showed great promise, but then again, the round was just beginning. However, birdies on the next two holes, followed by an eagle on the par 5 seventh put him 7-under par. He finished the first nine with a par and a birdie for a 27, 8-under par with only 10 putts. He matched par at the 10th, then a birdie at the eleventh, a par at twelve and birdies at the thirteenth and fourteenth had him at 11-under par. A par on the three shot fifteenth came before birdies at the sixteenth and seventeenth put him at 13-under par. The 18th is a par 5, so Auggie launched a good drive with his approach someing up just short of the green. His chip for eagle rolled past the hole. His fourth shot for birdie grazed the edge but stayed out. He settled for a par and a back nine total of 30. Despite playing for only a quarter bet on the round, when adding up the skins and presses, Auggie believed he won $65 that day. Bill Burke was an area professional who played a round at Normandie on May 20, 1970 that continues to stir controversy. He walked into pro Frank Keller’s golf shop after his round and presented his scorecard, showing a round of 57. Keller, who knew Burke, looked it over carefully and refused to certify it. In his later years Keller told this author that he did not believe Burke was capable of such a score, in particular the 25 he said he shot on Normandie’s back nine. Playing with Burke was a high school teacher who was new to the game and he told Keller he did not pay attention to what Burke shot, as Burke kept his own score. However, Burke refused to relent. He sent his score in to Guinness to be recorded as the lowest score on a course over 6,000 yards. After some research, Guinness would not honor the 18 hole score; but they did acknowledge his 9 hole score of 25. In the 1987 Guinness Book of Golf Records, it lists Burke’s round of 25 (4, 3, 3, 2, 3, 3, 1,4, 2) on the 6,389 par 71 Normandie course.

St. Louis Golf History

- Betty Jane Haemerle-Broz In an era when few events existed for women, Betty Jane was head-and-shoulders above other local players...and those elsewhere across the state. As a 14-year-old, Betty Jane recorded her first ace at Norwood Hills in 1940. That same summer, she won the Women’s District Junior title, defeating her good friend and fellow Norwood member Dorothy Jane Campbell. The Visitation sophomore often rode her bicycle from the family home in Pasadena Park to Bellerive CC, where she took lessons from pro Benny Richter. In 1942, the 16-year-old promptly entered and won her first of five Women’s District championships, with the others coming in 1946, 1947, 1948 and 1949. Her five straight District titles remains a record to this day. In 1944, the 18-year-old Fontbonne sophomore entered the Women’s Western Open, where she advanced to the quarterfinals, defeating Patty Berg 1-up in 19 holes. In the semifinals, she would go against one of the game’s legends, Babe Zaharias. Betty Jane gave Babe all she could handle, forcing the Olympic Champion to win three consectuve holes, including a 40-foot birdie on the seventeenth hole to earn a 2 and 1 victory. The Women’s State Amateur was postponed during the War years from 1942-45. Picking up in 1946, Betty Jane was medalist from 1946-1949, winning three of the four titles. Her lone loss came in 1947 in the semifinals, losing to Kansas City’s Marian Gault 4 and 3. Undaunted, she returned to win the next two years, defeating Miss Gault both times in the finals! Had the war years not intervened, there is little doubt that she would have completely dominated women’s golf throughout the 1940s. When she married Alan Broz in 1948, she continued to compete for a while, winning both the 1949 Missouri Women’s Amateur and the Women’s District! To put her play in perspective, of the nine District and State Championships she entered from 1942-1949, she won eight of them. In 1950, she decided not to defend her District or State titles. Like many women of that era, she settled into family life as a wife and teacher at Incarnate Word, playing casual golf with her husband, with only the occasional entre in competitive events. A gentle women, in later years she vounteered her time at the Cardinal Ritter Senior Center. Betty Jane passed away in October 2004 at age 79, remembered as one of the area’s all-time greats. • Missouri Women’s Amateur (1946, 1948, 1949) 1st • Trans-Miss (1947, 1948) • St. Louis Women’s District (1942, 1946, 1947, 1948, 1949) 1st • St. Louis Women’s District Junior (1940) 1st • Women’s Western Open (1944) Semifinalist

Metropolitan 9-Hole Championship - Ballwin GC When MAGA introduced the 9-Hole Championship in 2018, the goal was to reach out to a new sector of golfer; mission accomplished Saturday at Ballwin Golf Club. While we saw some regular names, and winners on Saturday, we also had numerous newcomers to the MAGA championship scene. Forty-four (44) total golfers teed it up to compete in the inaugural championship. Two ladies, one in each of the Women’s and Senior Women’s Divisions. Maria Morrison was our lone Women’s Division competitor and Alicia Anderson in the Senior Women’s. They were both hesitant to register thinking they may be the only ladies, but ultimately did, enjoyed themselves and will be a great recruiting tool for the 2020 version of the 9-Hole. While we had several newcomers, a familiar face and leader in the current Men’s Player of the Year Points Standings, Crimson Callahan would take the Men’s Low Gross honor. Callahan fired a 2-under round of 34 over the Ballwin layout. On the Net side, Justin Zhang (Metropolitan eClub) took home the Low Net honors with a 1-under 35. In the Senior Division, David Speicher would take Low Gross honors with a 1-under 35. Myrle Hughes and Bill Slantz would both come in with 3-under 33’s on the Net Side of the Senior Division. Hughes would take Low Net honors in the scorecard playoff. Again, thank you to all the competitors in Saturday’s 9-Hole Championship! Ballwin is already committed to hosting us again in 2020, so we look forward to seeing you back and many more.

Norwood Hills Junior Invitational The First Norwood Hills Junior Invitational was played June 13-14, with 70 players - 45 boys and 25 girls - competing for the titles. Alex McCulla, from Westview Golf Course in Quincy, Illinois, took immediate hold of the boy’s championship with he posted a 1-under par 71 on Norwood’s West Course. A contingent of four players, Jack Cronin (Persimmon Woods), Tyler Linenbroker (Forest Hills), Alex Gentry (Jeff City CC), and Justin Wingerter (Brookridge CC), stood four shots back at 75. While the sun was shining, the gusting winds played havoc with the scores. For the girls’ championship, Nicole Rallo (Old Hickory), posted the best round with a 75, followed by a pair of 77’s from Drew Nienhaus (St. Albans), and Lucy Bloomstran (Norwood Hills). Another blustery day greeted the players on Friday’s second day of the championship as several players struggled over Norwood’s East Course, considered by many as perhaps a bit more challenging at times than the West. Rallo was unable to continue her excellent play from Thursday as she came home with an 81 for a 156 total. Meanwhile, Paige Hoffman, from Glen Oaks CC in Chicago, followed her opening 78 with a very nice 79, giving her 157 for her two rounds. Local stalwart Claire Solovic shot 80 on her opening round, then followed it with a 79, giving her a 159 and a fourth-place finish. However, it was Nienhaus who would put together the two best rounds, following her opening 77 with a 78 for a 155 total and the victory. The St. Josephs Academy junior-to-be edged her fellow St. Joseph’s teammate Rallo in gaining the winning margin. McCulla, a junior-to-be at Quincy Notre Dame high, posted a second consecutive 71, a 2-over par (L-R) Tyler Linenbroker, Jack Cronin, Alex McCulla, Drew Nienhaus, round on the East Course. An Eagle on the par 4 11th Nicole Rallo, Paige Hoffman highlighted the second round. His 142 total gave him a 5-shot margin over Cronin at 147. Linenbroker was in the third spot with a 148 total. Norwood was a terrific host giving the players two days of enjoyment. The player dinner on Thursday evening was highlighted by Frank Cusumano - who came directly from the airport after covering the Blue’s victory on Wednesday evening - acting as Master of Ceremonies. On the dais was Ellen Port, Sam Migdal, Mike Small (University of Illinois Golf Coach), and Mark Leroux (University of Missouri Golf Coach). They each shared with the players their experiences in golf, with Leroux and Small giving the players the realities of recruiting and the pressures that come with playing at a Division-1 program. Port, former women’s golf coach at Washington University and a seven-time USGA Champion, let the players know of the enjoyment that they could experience playing at a D-II or a DIII program while enjoying the thrills of continuing their golf through college. Migdal, a former D-II National Champion at Central Missouri, told the players that he really improved his game after he arrived in college, where he had the opportunity to practice more and get tremendous assistance from his fellow players - one of which was his brother Joe. With a number of college coaches on hand during both the first and second rounds, it was a great opportunity for the players to showcase their skills for coaches looking to complete their rosters in the coming years. In short, the inaugural Norwood Hills Junior Invitational set the stage for what is hoped to be a championship that will only get better in the years ahead. Congratulations to co-chairs Jim McLaughlin and Bob Phillips, head professional Ryan Roy, and all the Rules Officials, and volunteers for making the Invitational a success.
