Curt’s Comments Greetings Members! Excuse me, but I blinked and May went right on by. Not sure why I am so surprised after all these years how quickly things move during the golf season. May was an exciting month that kicked off the 2019 tournament season, welcomed new interns to the staff Curt Rohe and for the most part got us settled into the Executive Director new offices. We had a crazy busy first weekend with the Old Warson Cup and U.S. Open First Stage Qualifying. Crimson Callahan is off to a torrid start after coming through at Old Warson and advancing through at U.S. Open Q at Fox Run GC. The new interns are getting their feet wet these last couple of weeks and we look forward to welcoming our third intern, Corey this coming week. We are getting geared up for a big first week of June with the 14th Open Championship at St. Albans. A stellar field this year with 141 professionals from 28 states now coming in to compete. I am proud to say Youth on Course is beginning to gain some traction. We have 35 juniors now registered as Youth on Course members through MAGA and hopefully out there enjoying the benefits of being a Youth on Course member at those facilities. It certainly has been a crazy spring dealing with Mother Nature. Take a minute to read Matt Czarnecki’s (St. Peter’s Golf Course Superintendent) piece in this issue on dealing with this uncommon weather we have experienced. The thing to take away for all golfers, is be patient when visiting your club or courses. These guys are doing the absolute best they can and we should be thankful for all their work. As always, thank you for taking a little bit time to read this issue. This is the first of our 4 monthly issues through the golf season so a lot to come in the next three months. Get out there and get golfing and keep it straight! Curt

Rules Corner Fixing a Penalty Trap The USGA and R&A have caught and corrected an unintended oversight in the new Rules. As of April, Model Local Rule E-12 exempts the player from a wrong-place penalty for playing from outside the relief area when taking back-on-the-line relief. Adopting this Local Rule is recommended in all competitions. Below is some background information on the change and how the Local Rule works. Back-on-the-line relief is an updated version of flagline relief in the old Rules. Referring to Figure 1, and using the example of taking relief from a yellow penalty area, the player drops a ball within a one club-length relief area relative to an imaginary line extending from the hole through the point where the ball last crossed the edge of the penalty area (white “X), as far back on the course as he or she likes. Variations of this relief option are available for penalty areas, an unplayable ball (inside or outside of a bunker), and interference with an abnormal course condition in a bunker. Figure 1. Original Back-on-the-Line Relief Rule (Play within relief area)

A major focus in the new Rules is playing from within the relief area when taking relief. The idea is to drop a ball in the right way, such that it strikes the course and comes to rest within the relief area. To that end, efforts were made to conform back-on-the-line relief to other relief procedures (e.g., abnormal course conditions, embedded ball, etc.). That is, have both a reference point for taking relief and a one club-length relief area no nearer the hole than the reference point. While other relief procedures have defined reference points (e.g., nearest point of complete relief, last point where ball crossed edge of penalty area, etc.), the reference point for back-of-the-line relief is unique. When taking back-on-the-line relief, the Rules state the player should indicate a reference point by using an object (e.g., tee in ground) or visually picking a spot on the course (e.g., tuft of grass, ground blemish). Otherwise, the reference point is determined based on where the dropped ball first strikes the course. This sets up a penalty trap. If instead of selecting a reference point, the player simply drops a ball, and it happens to bounce to rest nearer the hole, even half an inch, he or she gets the general penalty for subsequently making a stroke from that spot (i.e., wrong place; outside the relief area). [Note: A related complication is that many experienced golfers are still conditioned to the old flagline relief Rules, which allowed the player to play a dropped ball that rolled up to two club-lengths from where it first struck the course, even nearer the hole, without penalty.] (Continued on page 9)

Old Warson Cup - May 4-5 Callahan downs Pranger in 19 holes for OW Cup Title Crimson Callahan battled through two extra hole matches over the May 4-5 weekend, with the last coming in the finals against defending champion Drew Pranger, as he claimed his first title in a MAGA championship. Saturday morning’s round of 16 matches produced results which could rightly be termed upsets. Alex Ciaramitaro, the 2018 runner-up, lost to Tony Gumper 1up, while 2017 MAGA Amateur runner-up Ryan Eckelkamp, two-time winner OW Cup champ Sam Migdal, five-time OW Cup winner Skip Berbkmeyer, 2018 East Side winner Darren Stoffel, and 2018 Senior Playof the the Year Buddy Allen, also lost their opening matches. However, Pranger played his usual strong game, downing Frankie Thomas 1up, and then Tony Gumper 3 and 2 to reach the semifinals. Kyle Szyhowski, who took a 4 and 2 win from Eckelkamp, was sharp in his next match, taking a 4 and 3 win over Chris Ferris, who took a 3 and 1 victory over Migdal in their match. The ever-tough Chad Niezing defeated Reilly Ahearn 4 and 3, and then edged Brad Carpenter 1up in their quarterfinal. Carpenter edged Berkmeyer 2 and 1 in their opening match. Callahan took 20 holes to defeat Allen, then got the better of Alex Cusumano, the 2014 OW Cup runner-up, 4 and 3 in their quarterfinal match. Earlier, Cusumano was solid in his opening match, defeating Stoffel 6 and 5. Callahan was 3up at the 12th hole in the final match before things got interesting. Going to the 17th, Callahan was 2up, needing only a halve to win. However, Pranger got up-and-down from the bunker for par to pull within one. At the 18th, Pranger made a remarkable birdie, chipping in from 36 yards away, leveling the match. At the 19th hole, both found the fairway but Pranger’s approach caught the left green side bunker while Callahan was on the putting surface. When Pranger failed to get up and down, Callahan’s 3-footer for par was good for the victory.

On The Greens... Rain or Shine As most golfers know, this has been an incredibly wet spring. Typically April and May provide timely rains and warmer weather that allow for the gradual awakening of turfgrass and other plant life. This year however, rain has been excessive and has caused severe flooding and water damage across most of the Midwest. This set of circumstances has presented many challenges for Golf Courses and their Superintendents. After each rain event mowing becomes delayed or even sometimes cancelled for consecutive days, allowing the turf to become unruly and difficult to tame back to acceptable playing heights. Zoysia fairways and tees are having an extremely difficult time in the wet conditions. The purple seed heads of zoysia become more prevalent when mowing is limited to once or twice per week and disease symptoms also become more severe due to excessive moisture. Fescue rough areas also become unruly and shaggy after missing consecutive days of mowing, often making it difficult to find a ball that has strayed from the fairway. Clippings have been another challenge for courses to deal with during wet conditions. Mowing dry turf allows for better clipping dispersal and ultimately better playing conditions. Clipping clumps and wind-rows appear after the mower tries to cut wet areas of turf, again making it difficult to find a golf ball. Most courses have some type of clipping management program in place, but this process usually requires drier conditions in order to properly disperse or remove the clippings. Another challenge for courses this year has been keeping bunkers playable and in good condition. Heavy rains tend to wash bunkers out and constrict sub-surface drainage, ultimately causing the bunkers and drainage areas to hold undesirable pools of water. Maintenance crews have been raking and repairing bunkers on a daily basis only to have their work washed away literally overnight with a quick-hitting storm. The process of re-raking and preparing the bunkers is typically labor intensive and costly to the club/ course, and as a result some courses have elected to get through the rainy season before putting any more effort or money into the hazard areas. Disease is very prevalent in turfgrass and landscape plants during this excessively wet year. The moisture allows for certain pathogens to incubate rapidly and cause massive outbreaks of fatal turf diseases. The unfortunate circumstances of disease outbreaks require preventative or curative fungicide applications to be made. These applications typically cost courses a significant amount of money that would not be spent during a dry or normal year. The take home message of this article is to understand the many challenges that superintendents and their staffs face each and every day during this excessively wet golfing season. Maintenance crews will continue to work diligently through adverse weather patterns in order to give golfers the best possible conditions and experience. Please be patient and informed about recent weather events when making your tee time. Remember, if your yard is too wet to mow, typically so is the golf course! Matt Czarnecki, Class A Superintendent City of St. Peters

Port Competes at the 2019 U.S. Senior Women’s Open Port ties for Medalist Honors in Nashville, TN Ellen Port is at it once more. After receiving an exemption to the 2018 U.S. Senior Women’s Open at Chicago Golf Club - where she made the cut - she headed to Richland Country Club in Nashville at the end of April to qualify for 2019. Posting a 1-over 37 on the front nine, with a lone bogey, she came back with a solid 35 on her second nine, including four birdies, to tie for medalist honors with Susan West from Tuscaloosa, AL. This marks her 64th USGA championship. The Championship was played at Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club in Southern Pines, North Carolina, May 15-19. Ellen Port (l) and Susan West display their medals at the The qualifying first round found no player under par, with a 1-over 72 being the best score. The course average for the day played Richland Country Club Qaulifying site. Both players shot even par 72 to qualify. at more than 9-over par at 80.36 with a par of 71.

With an opening round of 80, Ellen was right in the middle of the pack, tied for 57th against a field of 120. Defending champion Laura Davies came in with a 75, while the 2018 runner-up, Juli Inkster, posted a 78. Ellen’s playing partners, Hollis Stacy and Amy Alcott, shot scores of 76 and 86 respectively. The second qualifying round was just as intense. After a 4-over 75, Helen Alfredsson posted a 2-under 69 to take the lead at 2-over par. While Ellen struggled early on the back nine, she closed with two birdies, finishing the day at 6-over par 77 and a two day total of 15-over par, making the cut on the number, and one of only five amateurs to qualify for the weekend, and the only amateur to make the cut in the both of the first two U.S. Senior Women’s Opens. The final two rounds showed just how difficult the course continued to play. Ellen ended at + 26 for the Championship. Helen Afredsson of Sweden, captured the title with a 1-over total, with Juli Inkster and Trish Johnson tied for second at +3.

MAGA Open Championship - 14 Years & Counting Already considered one of the top venues on the mini-tours, the Metropolitan Open at St. Albans gets better each year! When we hear from the players, it’s easy to see why so many love coming to St. Louis to compete in the Metropolitan Open. First, it’s simply one of the best venues they will play all year! Second, the hospitality shown by the Metropolitan staff and by St. Albans is outstanding. Finally, it offers a very sizeable payday for the champion! It’s no wonder why our champions come from across the country, as well as many with a very local flavor to be counted as a Metropolitan Open Champion. The event has grown significantly since the 54-hole event was first played in 2006, when Skip Berkmeyer dueled with Bob Gaus to claim the initial title. While Gaus received the check, Skip got the honors! After Darren Fletcher, from Scottsdale, Arizona, captured the title in 2007, it would be Scott Langley, future PGA The par 4 11th on the Lewis & Clark course Tour professional, who threw down the gauntlet and staked his claim to the next two Open titles. This saw amateurs winning three of the first four titles. However, as the word went out, more professionals saw the opportunity and they would win the title in the years ahead. Nevertheless, the Open retained a significant local tie as players from the area won four of the next five titles, including Shawn Jasper with two, then Mitchell Gregson and Chris Brant. Along with the strength of the field growing each year, so has the purse. In 2006, as Gaus picked up the $5,000 check, in 2018, Jordan Russell benefitted from a $25,000 first place prize. The Metropolitan would not be as great as it is without the very strong support from St. Albans. From constructing a new scoreboards to the volunteer support, the club has shown why it, too, should be counted among the area’s best! We invite you to come to St. Albans June 4-7 to see some outstanding shotmaking, along with supporting a CHAMPION RUNNER-UP 2006 Skip Berkmeyer (a) Bob Gaus number of local players who compete each year. Such a penalty trap is not what the governing bodies intended; hence, the new Local Rule. It exempts the player from a wrong-place penalty in taking back-onthe-line relief. If the dropped ball rolls outside of the relief area, the player may choose to drop a second time the right way in the relief area or play from outside the relief area, including nearer the hole. This applies whether or not the player selected a reference point (see Figures 2 and 3; player drops at blue “X” and ball rolls outside of relief area).

Figure 2. Back-on-the-Line Relief MLR With No Reference Point Selected (May play outside relief area with conditions)

The restrictions on playing from outside the relief area when taking back-on-the-line relief are: 1. The ball must not roll more than one club-length in any direction from where it first struck the course. 2. The ball must not be played nearer the hole than the estimated point where the ball last crossed the edge of a penalty area. 3. The ball must not be played nearer the hole than the spot of the original ball.

St. Louis Golf History - Jimmy “Little Dynamite” Manion

-

Perhaps the best of the area’s early amateur golfers, Jimmy Manion had a multitude of accomplishments to his name. He was the first four-time Missouri Amateur Champion (1917, 1921, 1923, 1926). In 1919, he was tied for medalist at the U.S. Amaeur at Oakmont. In 1921, he qualified for the U.S. Amateur at St. Louis CC, and he was named as the 4th best amateur in the country, behind the likes of Bobby Jones and Chick Evans, by none other than Grantland Rice. Jimmy Manion (r) wih Chick Evans in1929

In the St. Louis Men’s District he was also a four-time winner, taking the title in 1923, 1925, 1927 and 1928. Competing in the St. Louis Open, he won titles in 1924, 1928 and 1929, while he had won the St. Louis Muny title in 1915, 1917 and 1919. In 1959, he won the Missouri Senior Amateur crown, shooting 149 over Joplin’s Twin Hills CC. Along with Eddie Held and Clarence Wolff, they were named by St. Louis Athlete Magazine in 1919 as the St. Louis Triumvirate.

Manion wih his wife Gladys. [left] Playing out of a bunker at Forest Park in 1915

On the national scene, he defeated Chick Evans in the Western Amateur in 1926, 8 and 7, a significant accomplishment, as Evans had won both the U.S. Open and the U.S. Amateur in 1916, the first to accomplish that. He also won the Trans-Miss championship in 1924, downing Lawson Watts from Joplin 11 and 10, becoming the first area player to hold that title. At 5’6” and 110 lbs, he was hardly one who would appear to physically intimidate an opponent. However, as Walter Hagen once noted, “pound for pound, he may well be the greatest golfer of all.” With his notoriety, he was sought-after by many clubs to join, and he was usually most accommodating. After growing up playing at Forest Park (as most players of that era did), Jimmy would represent Riverview CC (later renamed North Shore), Midland Valley CC (later renamed Meadow Brook), North Hills (renamed Norwood Hills), and Normandie CC. At many of these clubs, his brother Johnny, who was a professional, was the pro at these same clubs. On a few occasions, Jimmy and Johnny went head-to-head, never one on one, but generally with partners in a best-ball match. At different times, both of their teams were victorious. In 1924, the papers reported that if Jimmy won the Western Amateur he would be named a member of the Walker Cup Team, such was the high regard in which he was held. Unfortunately, he lost 1up to Albert Seckel in the semifinal match. Harrison Johnston of St. Paul, MN., went on to defeat Seckel in the final. His last USGA competition was in 1956 when he competer in the U.S. Senior Amateur. In later years, when asked what golf meant to him, he was quick to respond. “Golf has meant everything to me. It has given me everything.” Jimmy died in May 1984 at age 87.

Normandie Amateur - Playoff Determines Winner Szcesniak edges Sullivan for Normandie Crown Kyle Szcesniak from Forest Hills CC, started Sunday 5 shots back of Round 1 leader Ryan Sullivan in the 33rd Normandie Amateur. Szcesniak would fire the low round of the day, a 1-over 72 which included a chipin birdie on the always tough 250 yard finishing Par 3 18th, to move himself into a tie for the lead. Sullivan, a couple groups back and had the only subpar round of the weekend to lead after Round 1, would finish with a 77 on the day. The two would head to #1 to playoff for the title. Szcesniak would get up and down for par from left of the putting green while Sullivan made a bogey and the title would go to Szcesniak. Crimson Callahan would finish solo 3rd for the weekend to extend his early season lead in the 2019 Player of the Year points race. Youth On Course May 8, 2019 MEDIA CONTACT: Julie McKay 703.891.3330 JMcKay@Buffalo.Agency Buffalo.Agency Youth on Course Opens Registration for 2019 Hundred Hole Hike Top Fundraisers Rewarded with Dream Golf Getaways (PEBBLE BEACH, Calif.) – Youth on Course – the non-profit organization providing young people with subsidized golf, college scholarships, caddie programs and paid internships – announces open registration for the fourth annual Hundred Hole Hike. Participants nationwide will be challenged to complete more than five rounds of golf in one day and secure donations aimed at increasing affordability and accessibility for youth interested in the game. This year’s event rewards top performers with dream getaways, including stay-and-play packages at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club and Pebble Beach Golf Links. “The Hundred Hole Hike is a remarkably challenging event that brings together golfers from around the country to work toward a common goal to help youth,” says Jeff Clark, Youth on Course Chief Development Officer. “The Hikers are accomplishing a major feat for themselves and raising money to create access to the game for youth.” Golf associations from the Carolinas, Colorado, Iowa, Philadelphia and South Dakota will join Northern California, Georgia, Minnesota and Utah who were involved last year. With nine AGA’s already committed to hosting a group of hikers locally, 100% of contributions will be used to provide $5 or less green fees for more than 50,000 youth across 29 states and Canada. The national Hike date is set for September 30th with statewide hikes differing over the summer to accommodate course availability. Take the challenge and register today. Those unable to join the hike may still pledge any amount and support a team of your choice here: https://www.crowdrise.com/o/en/campaign/hundred-hole-hike The Hundred Hole Hike evolved from a 2012 event created by Jim Colton and has experienced exponential year-over-year growth since its implementation by YOC in 2016. The 2018 Hike attracted 61 golfers from seven states and fundraised $297,505. This represents a 325% increase from 2017, with 24 golfers from three states collecting $91,506. Its inaugural year drew six golfers and raised $15,000. Operating in every U.S. region, Youth on Course has more than 50,000 active members. Since 2006, juniors have played more than 10 million holes and 795,000 rounds while the organization has helped generate more than $5.2 million in tee-time revenue reimbursed back to individual golf courses. In addition to subsidized rounds, Youth on Course also facilitates paid internships, a caddie program and nationwide scholarships. They have awarded 223 students with college scholarships totaling more than $1.4 million in financial support. The current Youth on Course scholarship retention rate is ninety-four percent, with 80 students already graduated. More information: 831.625.4653.

Notes of Interest Regarding Area Players / Competitors • Drew Lilly was a local qualifier for the U.S. Open at the TPC at Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas, shooting a 68 to move on to Sectional Qualifying, where he shot two rounds of 72, missing the Cut by 7 shots. In 2018, Drew, along with Omar Rehmatulla of Houston, Texas, qualified for the 2019 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball, shooting a 64 at the Golf Club of Edmund in Edmund, Oklahoma. At the Championship at Bandon Dunes, players went very low, with three teams tied at 13-under par for medalist honors. Lilly and Rehmatulla went 64-72 for a two round total of 5-under par. Unfortunately, the cut for the low 32 teams was at 6-under par. • At the Women’s Amateur Four-Ball, no area players qualified for the Championship. However, Erica Shepherd, winner of the U.S. Junior Girls’ title at Boone Valley in 2017, was one of the players on the winning team.

• Adam Long, competing in his first PGA Championship, finished in a tie for 41st position at +5 for 72 holes. He had rounds of 73, 70, 69 and 75 for a 287 total, pocketing over $36,000. This brought his season earnings to over $1.36 million. He has two top 10 finishes to go along with his victory at the 2019 Desert Classic in January. At the Wells Fargo in May, he finished at even par in 45th position. He currently ranks 47th in the FedExCup standings with 596 points. • Scott Langley finished sixth at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am with rounds of 64, 69, 73 and 69 for a 275 total, earning over $273,000 and 100 FedExCup Points. At the Desert Classic, Scott tied for 12th position, earning $112,000 and an additional 56.83 FedExCup Points. He is currently ranked 115th in FedExCup points with 251 for the year. • On the Web.com Tour, Chris Naegel is ranked 101th with 99 points. He has had one top 10 finish this season at the KC Golf Classic.
