Curt’s Comments Greetings MAGA Members! Two months has flown by since I wrote our August issue of The Metropolitan. We had an exceptionally busy September and October wrapping up the 2018 tournament season these last couple months. This past week we recognized and celebrated Curt Rohe the fine play of three great players as our 2018 Executive Director Players of the Year. Ellen Port, Buddy Allen and Drew Pranger all had exceptional 2018 campaigns to earn our Player of the Year awards. Old Warson was once again a gracious host in delivering a wonderful evening to celebrate the 2018 season. Few things to look forward to in the next couple months. Handicap score posting season ends on November 14th. MAGA, like all associations in this part of the country, are seasonal associations. Your USGA Handicap Index will continue to update if you head to warmer climates and continue posting scores. The 2019 season will start back up again on March 1st in the spring. Be on the lookout for the 2019 Schedule of Events, in fact, it is available online on our downloadable Google calendar. This calendar can be downloaded and it is automatically updated as we add events. Two exciting things to announce now for the 2019 season: 1) MAGA is adding a 9-hole championship to the calendar, a date will be released very soon and this will be open to Men, Women, Seniors and Juniors and 2) the MAGA Four-Ball Championship will expand in 2019 to a 36hole championship, it will be played at Franklin County Country Club next season. I would like wrap up by giving a big thank you to my staff this season, Maggie Smith our Director, Operations and our interns Nick Wojciechowski, Mickey Duncan and Adrian Brown! You all make my life much easier and have done a tremendous job in continuing to raise the bar here at MAGA! Since this will be the last issue before the end of the year, everyone have a very safe holiday season these next two months and I look forward to being back in touch with all of you in 2019!

Rules Corner Nuances in the New Rules Most golfers are becoming familiar with the major changes in the New Rules for 2019 (e.g., dropping the ball from knee-height, removing loose impediments in bunkers and penalty areas, repairing spike marks on the putting green, etc.). There are many subtle changes as well. Here are some insights: 1. The player may substitute another ball each and every time that he or she drops or places a ball in the process of taking relief - Rule 14.3a. 2. The player may continue play with a club that he or she has damaged for the rest of that round, but not for a strokeplay playoff or a subsequent round - Rule 4.1a. 3. Objects embedded in the putting green (e.g., acorn or pebble) are considered “damage to the putting green.” The player may dig out the object and repair the damage without penalty - Rule 13.1c. 4. The player must not take a practice swing that touches sand when his or her ball touches or lies in the same bunker, but may do so in another bunker. The player may touch the sand in a bunker with his or her club, just not right in front or right behind the ball (but no testing the sand). Leaning on a club in a bunker is permitted. – Rule 12.2b(1). 5. There is no longer embedded-ball relief for a dropped ball (only dropping from knee height). Embedded-ball relief is only permitted when the ball is in its own pitch-mark made as a result of the player’s previous stroke and where part of the ball is below the level of the ground - Definition of Embedded Ball. 6. A provisional ball may be played up to and including from where the original ball is likely to be. Thereafter (if played any closer to the hole), the provisional ball becomes the ball in play - Rule 18.3c. Also, a player may announce his or her intent to play a provisional ball to anyone, even a spectator – Interpretation 18.3b/1. 7. Natural wear to the hole, even if the hole is out of round, is not among the conditions considered “damage to the putting green” and must not be touched or repaired (until the group has completed play of the hole). Damage to the hole caused by a flagstick or a ball mark may be repaired. - Rule 13.1c and Interpretation 13.1c(2)/2. 8. The Rules state that when taking relief, a ball must be dropped the right way, come to rest, and be played from within the particular relief area. However, there is one exception. If the ball fails to come to rest in the relief area when dropped, dropped a second time, placed and placed a second time (e.g., closely-cropped grass on a hard bank), the player must place a ball at the nearest point, no nearer the hole, where the ball will stay at rest that is in the same area of the course as the relief area. This point may be outside the relief area – Interpretation 14.3c(2)/1. 9. Any ball at rest on the putting green may be lifted out of the way of another ball in motion on the putting green without penalty. However, all of the Rules for lifting the ball still apply. That is, the player must mark his or her ball before lifting. Similarly, the player must get authority from an opponent and mark the ball before lifting their ball - Rule 14.1a and Exception to Rule 11.3.

MAGA Four-Ball Championship Munos and Marziani Posts 5-under 67 to Claim Title St. Louis knew it was coming, eventually, but the 54 players who teed it up at Old Hickory Golf Club Friday certainly had hoped it would not be Friday. In less than desirable conditions, those players persevered and completed the 2018 Metropolitan Four-Ball. Seventeen of the teams played in the Open Division on Friday. Ryan Munos and Chris Marziani survived the day and posted a 5-under 67 to come away as the 2018 Open Division Champions. Six birdies and 1 bogey on the day would get the side to their 5-under score. The side of Marziani/ Munos bested the field by 2-shots, there was a 3-way tie for Runner-Up at 69. Those sides were David Strickland/Ryan Sullivan, Tyler Ward/Ryan Rerich and Tom Sinak/Pat Riordan. In the Net Division, the side of King Edmonston/Marvin Frazier would end up in a tie with Tom Grossman/Dan Simmons. Both sides shot 2-under 70. A scorecard playoff was performed and Edmonston/Frazier would edge Grossman/Simmons out for the title.

Nuances of New Rules (continued from page 3) 10. In partner formats (e.g., Four-Ball and Foursomes), a player may take any action concerning a partner’s ball, except make the stroke. That is, a player may mark, lift, drop, place and replace a partner’s ball. He may also declare the partner’s ball unplayable and take relief, or take relief for the partner’s ball in a penalty area. The partner is responsible for the player’s actions – Rules 22.2 and 23.5a. 11. The player doesn’t have to take relief if his or her ball lies on equipment (e.g., towel, golf bag). He or she may play the ball as it lies or take relief from a movable obstruction - Rule 15.2(2) and (3). 12. An artificial object that is out of bounds is now called an obstruction. However, free relief is only available for that part of an immovable obstruction (e.g., a post) that hangs over or lies in bounds and not in a penalty area; otherwise, no relief - Rule 16.1a(2). Movable obstructions may be removed anywhere on or off the course - Rule 15.2a(1). 13. Temporary water is an accumulation of water that remains visible on the “ground” (not the “course”) before or after the player takes his or her stance. That is, water, snow or natural ice in a tree or bush is no longer considered temporary water from which the player may take relief – Definition of Temporary Water. 14. Announcing intent to lift a ball for identification or to check if it is cut is no longer required (the Rules rely on player integrity to proceed correctly); however, the player must still mark the ball before touching, rotating, or lifting it - Rules 7.3 and 4.2c. 15. Sand and loose soil are not loose impediments anywhere on the course, but may be removed on the putting green without penalty – Rule 13.1c(1) and Definition of Loose Impediment. 16. When taking reasonable actions, there is no penalty to the player for ACCIDENTALLY MOVING a ball: a. During search or identification (e.g., stepping on ball in deep grass during search) b. On the putting green no matter how it happens (e.g., practice swing with putter) c. When marking, lifting or replacing a ball when permitted (e.g., dropping coin on ball when marking). d. When removing a movable obstruction (e.g., ball resting against rake moves when rake removed) e. When restoring a worsened condition when permitted (e.g., player’s ball on fringe of putting green covered with sand after another player’s bunker shot). f. When taking relief (e.g., swinging a club to determine nearest point of relief from cart path) g. When measuring under a Rule (e.g., ball bumped when measuring with flagstick). – Rule 9.4b Exceptions 2, 3 and 4. John Thorman MAGA Rules Committee

St. Louis Golf History - Lloyd Mangrum Born on August 1, 1914 inTrenton, Texas, Lloyd Mangrum became a professional golfer at the age of 15, working for his brother Ray at CliffDale CC in Dallas. He joined the PGA Tour in 1937, eventually winning thirty-six events. His play was interrupted by World War II. Despite being offered the position as golf pro at Fort Meade, he chose to serve in a combat role. Part of the third army under General George Patton, he took part in the D-Day landings at Normandie, and was wounded during the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944, Germany’s last major offensive campaign in the war. For his service, he was awarded two silver stars, two bronze stars and two purple hearts. He left service with the rank of staff sergeant. Before he entered service, from 1940-1942, Mangrum won five times on Tour. In 1940 at the Masters, he opened with a 64, a record that stood for decades until broken in 1986 by Nick Price when he shot a 63. After he returned from service, he had some of his best seasons, with 1951 being among the best when he lead the Tour on the money list. In 1951 and 1953, he won the Vardon Trophy for the lowest scoring average on Tour. The highlight of his career came in 1946 when he won the U.S. Open at Canterbury Golf Club in Cleveland, Ohio, defeating Vic Ghezzi and Byron Nelson in a playoff. He finished second on two occasions at the Masters, and was second at the 1950 U.S. Open at Merion, along with George Fazio, to Ben Hogan. He was named to four Ryder Cup teams, 1947, 1949, 1951 and 1953, with the last one as playing captain. In 1950 and 1951, he competed in the St. Louis Open. In 1950, at Algonquin, he finished tied for fourth, along with Sam Snead. At the 1951 event at Meadowbrook (in Overland, MO) he battled Cary Middlecoff down the stretch, eventually ending two shots back in second place. He returned in 1952, for the Western Open at Westwood CC. From 1946 through the 1951 season he had accumulated 23 victories and had already won the Phoenix Open earlier in 1952. Westwood’s course was playing at 6,673 yards as a par 72 when the tournament began on May 29. Mangrum’s opening round of 68 had him tied with Tommy Bolt. Mangrum’s next round of 70 began to separate him from the field with a 3-shot advantage over Bolt. His third round 72 extended his lead to five. His final round of 64, a new course record, sealed his victory. His 274 total gave him an 8-shot win over South African Bobby Locke, who closed with a 67 of his own. The previous course record was recorded by Ralph Guldahl in 1938, when he posted a 65 during his third round, when he won the Western Open at Westwood. Mangrum would win six more times over the next four years with his final victory coming at the Los Angeles Open in 1956. He continued competing through 1962, though without much success. Byron Nelson asked three young tour players at the 1996 Masters if they had everheard of Lloyd Mangrum. They had not. Nelson noted that Mangrum was the best player who’s been forgotten. His 36 PGA wins places him in 13th position all-time, ahead of the likes of Lee Trevino, Gary Player, Raymond Floyd, Hale Irwin and Greg Norman, and just three show of Tom Watson’s 39 victories. He passed away in November 1973 at age 59 in California. In 1998, he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.

USGA Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship Shannon Johnson overtakes Kelsey Chugg with Birdie on Final Hole To Claim Women’s Mid-Amateur Title. In a back and forth match, which had both players with small leads, it came down to the 18th green with the match all square. Chugg, the 2017 champion, hit a nice layup from the rough, then pitched to within 10 feet left of the flag. Johnson hit a terrific approach from 220 yards, landing on the front of the green, about 25 feet away. Putting first for her eagle, Johnson ran her putt past about 18 inches. Chugg, putting for her birdie, saw her ball slide past the cup to the left. When Johnson rolled in her birdie, she was the 2018 Women’s Mid-Amateur champion. During the first two rounds of stroke play, only one hole, the 18th, a converted par-5 for the championship, play under par. The 9th hole played a full stroke over par, making it the most difficult on the course. With some thick rough and Norwood’s quick, sloping greens, the scores reflected the demanding conditions. Superintendent Mike Null and his staff received high praise for the conditioning, with the players all stating that Norwood was a touch, but fair, test of golf. Norwood’s head pro, Ryan Roy and his staff, along with COO Ken Butler and the rest of the Norwood staff, treated the players to a wonderful week as Norwood was a gracious host.

Mid-America Junior Cup Matches The MAGA Juniors started strong at the Mid-America Cup Matches, held October 20-21 at Bogey Hills CC, jumping out to a 2.5 to 1.5 lead in the opening Four-Ball Matches, as the teams of Brook Biermann/ Nicole Rallo and Momo Kikuchi/Claire Solovic both notched decisive wins, 5 and 4 and 6 and 4 respectively. However, the afternoon Foursomes (Alternate shot) proved more difficult as they earned only a single point, enabling the Kansas City squad to take a 4.5 to 3.5 lead at the end of Saturday’s play. The fate of the matches would be decided on the Sunday singles matches, a new format for 2018. Securing an early point, followed by a halved match, the MAGA Juniors looked to be on the move. However, the Kansas City team piled up four victories, against only two MAGA wins in the final six matches, leaving the MAGA players two points shy of victory. Like past matches, these are great opportunities for our younger players to showcase their talents in what is sure to continue to be a forerunner to future battles among these players.

On the Greens... Preparing Now means a Healthy Course Next Season! As another golf season fades into the fall with old man winter right around the corner, superintendents in the metropolitan area begin planning now for next year. A common assumption among some patrons is that as the turf prepares itself for the cold season, we get to slow down and relax. In all honesty, it is quite the contrary. “But, they were perfect….” Aerification season is the true beginning of the fall for courses in the area. We know the greens were good. We know the speed was coming back. We know they haven’t “looked” this great in a long time… believe me, we know. But if we don’t continue our spring and fall aerifications, they will not stay like that for long. It’s labor intensive. It’s hard work. It messes up the greens for a couple weeks, but it’s an absolute necessity for plant health on a surface that takes a beating from May-September. Time to LET THEM BREATHE! Fall is also the time for seeding… lots of seeding. Predominantly tall fescue roughs that have been damaged from a long (and extremely hot) summer will be overseeded to ensure new plants are filling in the gaps left behind. Some of us, unfortunately, have also been seeding our bentgrass areas, whether that be greens, collars, tees or for a few, fairways. The poa annua population on many bent surfaces suffered or died-off completely in another Missouri summer. Bermuda growers have overseeded their fairways with ryegrass to help protect the warm season turf from what can be a cold winter in this area. Bermuda grass isn’t fond of cold weather and the rye can act as an “insulator” until summer rolls back around. This also helps aesthetically as Bermuda tends to be slow coming out of dormancy in the summer. Fertility applications are made in the fall to ensure a carbohydrate reserve for the plant to use during the winter months. These applications help to harden off the plant so that there is fuel in the tank when spring weather returns. Applications of fungicides are made now to help protect the plants from various fungi that prefer to live off the plant medium in the winter. Another fungicide is used to prevent disease development in the spring, especially for those courses with zoysiagrass fairways and tees. We use years of data and research to give us the best opportunity to prevent damage later on. And there will be post emergent herbicide applications made to kill off winter weeds and pre-emergent applications to prevent the dreaded spring/summer weeds from germinating. This will occur over the next 3-4 months, all in an effort to make sure your golf course is in prime condition when next year’s golfing counts. We are in the process of anticipating when to blow out our irrigation systems. Again, planning around Mother Nature can be a chore in this part of the country. If we remove our ability to water too soon, desiccation of the turf can become a real issue, especially if there aren’t any timely rains/snows to help us out. If the conditions get too severe, superintendents may be required to recharge those systems to supply the water needed… just to turn around and blow the system back out. •
Tree removal, leaf and debris cleanup, reworking sand in bunkers, topdressing…
•
Refurbishing equipment, tee markers, out-of-bounds stakes, and bunker rakes…
•
Preparing budgets, planning pesticide applications for 2019, staff planning and training…
Yeah, we don’t really get to slow down! Justen Patterson, GCS The Legends CC

Inkster - Delsing Exhibition On Friday, August 21, the afternoon before the start of the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship at Norwood Hills CC, Juli Inkster, LPGA Hall of Fame member and former 3-time U.S. Women’s Amateur Champion and U.S. Women’s Open Champion, joined St. Louis’ own Jay Delsing for an exhibition at Norwood Hills. In the audience were members of local high school and college teams, along with Women’s Mid-Amatuer contestants and Norwood Members. Hitting from a teeing ground created along the 9th fairway of the Club’s East Course, the duo demonstrated a variety of shots, making it look all-too-easy to those in attendance.

MAGA Offices Damaged The evening ov November 1st was quite eventful. Following a wonderful reception at Old Warson, honoring the 2018 Players of the Year, Curt Rohe went to one of his favorite haunts for a quick dinner. It was around 7:30 when he received a call from Jayne Watson, who was heading home, informing him that there were police at the MAGA offices on Clayton Road, just west of Bopp Rd. A few minutes later, a call came from the Town & Country police, looking for the building’s owner and letting Curt know that a car had run into the building. Curt went to the office where he was told that it appeared an intoxicated driver had left the road and did considerable damage to the front of the building. The driver was placed under arrest by the police. As can be seen below, the office at the left side was damaged considerably. Thankfully, no one was inside the offices at the time.
