Recounting adventures in the Hall yard
WELCOME, MEMORABLE AND MEANINGFUL Welcome to our Patterdale Hall brochure in which we aim to give you a flavour of how Bolton School use their Residential centre in the Lake District. There is no other independent school in the UK which has an outdoor facility the size and scale of Patterdale Hall. We are privileged to host Bolton School pupils at the Hall throughout their school career; we cater for children all the way from Year 4 to Sixth Form. We are proud to have been recognised as a Gold Standard provider by the AHOEC and are accredited with the Learning outside the Classroom Quality Badge and AAIAC Adventure Mark. The range of learning opportunities we offer are vast and our programmes are carefully designed to be progressive in terms of learning, personal challenge and adventure. Patterdale Hall staff pride themselves on providing the very best quality of residential experience, adventure and learning. Over the years we get to know the pupils well and enjoy watching them develop into outstanding young adults. For most Bolton School pupils, coming to Patterdale Hall starts to feel like coming home or putting on that favourite pair of slippers! We offer a good selection of nutritious meals cooked from scratch by our residential team, served in our traditional formal dining room. The essence of community is grounded in enjoying food together and helping to clear up and lay up for the next meal. The warm and cosy dormitories are something to look forward to, however wet and chilly it might be outdoors. EVENT HIRE AND ACCOMODATION: When Bolton School are not in residence, Patterdale Hall is available to hire by other schools, youth groups, companies, charities and parties of adults. The beautiful and inspiring setting coupled with very practical accommodation and excellent hospitality makes the Hall ideal for a great number of events. “From the high garden, or from one of your tree-top castles, you look out upon everything, you see for miles and miles; but in your dark little cave in the ivy-bank you can sit and dream. Up in your tree-castle you often sit dreaming, of course; and from your hidden cave, through its ivy curtain, you love to peep; still, in the main, one is the Out-world’s Watch-tower, the other the In-world’s Gate. You wonder sometimes why so many grown-ups look unhappy? There are many reasons no doubt; but one great reason is that too many have fallen from the first of these, or have lost their way to the other.” from The World Without and the World Within – Sunday Talks with my Children by Patrick Geddes

OUTSTANDING EDUCATION ALL ROUND A message from the Heads
Outdoor adventure learning has always been integral to a Bolton School education and holds a fond place in the hearts of both current and former pupils. From Year 4 upwards, all our boys and girls enjoy regular visits to Patterdale Hall where they engage in a wide range of activities, including abseiling, kayaking, orienteering, mountaineering, gorge walking and sailing as they build their mental and physical strength, learn to work in teams and to develop leadership skills. Memories are created here which last a lifetime. Philip Britton Headmaster
Patterdale Hall is a fantastic facility, idyllically situated on the southern shores of Lake Ullswater. It provides the backdrop for a wide range of character building activities for our own pupils and for those of other schools and organisations. Besides the extensive outdoor programme, including DofE and NCS activities, that the high quality staff oversees, it also hosts a wide range of other visits including subject-specific retreats, residential courses, business enterprise training and creative writing courses.

William Wordsworth
William Wordsworth stayed at Patterdale Hall on a number of occasions. It is rumoured that it was whilst staying a Patterdale Hall that he conceived of one of his most famous Lake District poems, 'Daffodils'. His sister Dorothy wrote diary entries about the daffodils in the nearby ancient woodland at Aira Force and Wordsworth drew the poem from her writings. Learning at Patterdale is infused with the wisdom of naturalists and environmental philosophers to encourage an active, characterful, creative and contemplative relationship with the great outdoors. As part of some visits, students will undertake the John Muir Award at Discovery level. The award is threaded through the program of activities. Students discover and explore wild places, learn to conserve them through their behaviour and actions and share their experience and learning with others.

adventure learning
“Adventure isn’t hanging on a rope off the side of a mountain. Adventure is an attitude that we must apply to the day to day obstacles of life – facing new challenges, seizing new opportunities, testing our resources against the unknown and in the process, discovering our own unique potential.” John Amatt
John Amatt is an Old Boy of the school, an international adventurer and mountaineer. One of his best known feats is the first ascent of the Troll Wall in Norway, a vertical mile of rock. John is a keen supporter of adventure learning and the President of the Friends of Patterdale Hall. Programmes are designed by our Adventure Learning Team in collaboration with the Bolton School Head of Outdoor Learning and curriculum staff. Designed to be progressive, developmental, memorable and meaningful, early visits provide a taste of activities which pupils can take further, both on future visits to the Hall and during extra-curricular and sports lessons back at school.

CHARACTER EDUCATION “To aim for the highest point is not the only way to climb a mountain.” Nan Shepherd, The Living Mountain Learning outside the classroom plays an important role in helping our young people develop skills and attributes that allow them to flourish and fulfil their potential. Our carefully structured Patterdale programme encourages pupils to reflect on their own experiences, recognise personal strengths and view peers as role models. They learn to show kindness and compassion to others and to value constructive feedback as they strive to meet personal and team goals. In this unique setting they receive guidance and support to meet challenges and acquire the knowledge and skills that equip them to take risks and exercise good judgement. These experiences build resilience and embed character virtues which serve them well throughout their lives.

CREATIVE OUTDOOR EDUCATION “A walk is only a step away from a story, and every path tells.” Robert Macfarlane
The term 'creativity' is commonly linked to the arts and there is plenty of opportunity for creative arts and cultural activity at Patterdale Hall - storytelling campfires are just one example. Creative habits of mind are part of personal growth and can be summarised as intellectual curiosity, persistence, collaboration, discipline and imagination. Use of the great outdoors as creative inspiration forges a wonderful connection between creativity and character. Pupils might visit the Hall for a specifically creative retreat, a creative writing weekend for instance. Some of our adventure programmes are enriched by creative approaches to exploration of the natural environment and reflection upon time spent in wild nature.

the english lake district, an area of outstanding universal value The harmonious beauty of stone-walled fields and rugged farm buildings in a spectacular natural backdrop has attracted visitors to the Lake District from the 18th century onward. Picturesque and Romantic interest stimulated globally-significant social and cultural forces to appreciate and protect scenic landscapes. The addition of distinguished villas, gardens and formal landscapes augment the area’s natural beauty. The Romantic movement’s engagement with the English Lake District generated new ideas about the relationship between humanity and its environment, including the recognition of harmonious landscapes and the validity of people’s emotional responses to their landscapes. Another key development was the idea of the universal value of scenic landscape, both in itself and in its capacity to nurture and uplift imagination, creativity and spirit, along with the concept that everyone has a right to appreciate and enjoy it. These ideas underpin the global movement of protecting areas of natural beauty and the development of recreational experience within them. The growth of these ideas in the English Lake District, alongside threats to the area, led directly to the development of a conservation movement and the establishment of the National Trust movement. This has since spread to many countries and contributed to the formation of the modern concept of legally protected landscapes.
be adventure smart Patterdale Hall and Bolton School are delighted to partner with AdventureSmart.uk to help to develop Lakeland visitors' ability to prepare for their own adventures and for how they introduce others to the great outdoors. The key areas of preparation follow three key lines of enquiry: 1. Do I have the right gear? 2. Do I know what the weather will be like? 3. Am I confident I have the knowledge & skills for the day? To find out more about this great initiative visit the AdvetureSmart.UK website at www.adevnturesmart.uk
