German publication Autobild claims to have received word that VW’s board has decided to give the compact SUV the thumbs up for approval, not long after also pushing forward with plans to launch the Polo-based T-Cross and Golf-based T-Roc. Apparently, it took VW so long to approve the vehicle because it could prove quite expensive to build, owing to the fact that it won’t borrow all that many parts from other VW vehicles.
FIAT CHRYSLER JOINS BMW, INTEL SELF-DRIVING ALLIANCE SAN FRANCISCO -- Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is joining the self-driving alliance led by BMW Group, Intel and Mobileye, becoming the second automaker in the year-old group to opt to partner in developing an autonomous driving platform.
It is also reported the company has been encouraged to build the Up! SUV because Brazil’s small SUV market is currently dominated by the Dacia Duster and Ford EcoSport. VW wants a piece of the pie. VW debuted the concept, dubbed the Taigun, at the Sao Paulo International Motor Show in 2012 and while the production-variant could adopt similar styling, it might be renamed the T-Track.
More automakers are seeking alliances to share the high costs of developing self-driving vehicle technology, which requires extensive r&d and software expertise outside the traditional domain of carmakers. The group, which announced its alliance last year, plans to put its technology for both Level 3 and Level 4/5 autonomous driving into production by 2021, BMW said in a statement on Wednesday. This would match a general timeframe shared by rival automakers and technology companies that are developing such technology alone. In a separate statement, the partners said FCA, which already has a non-exclusive alliance with Alphabet’s self-driving unit, Waymo, would bring engineering and other technical resources and expertise to the deal, as well as experience in North America, the automaker’s most profitable market. FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne cited the “synergies and economies of scale” possible in joining the alliance. Marchionne has long argued that automakers must merge in order to survive the prohibitively high costs of making more technologically advanced vehicles. In April, he said FCA was looking for new partners in self-driving development because “banking all of our solutions on one possible outcome is going to be disastrous.” Auto suppliers Delphi and Continental are also part of the alliance. The group said it was still on track to put 40 self-driving test vehicles on the road by the end of 2017, and would learn from the 100 test vehicles to be deployed by Mobileye in the U.S. beginning later this year. The FCA partnership with Waymo uses Chrysler Pacifica hybrid minivans for testing. VW UP! SUV COULD LAUNCH IN 2020 AS T-TRACK Five years after premiering a VW Up!-based SUV in concept guise, it would appear the carmaker finally has the impetus to put it into production.
GM COULD BE GEARING UP TO BATTLE LYFT AND UBER There’s a saying that you should ‘keep your friends close and your enemies closer’ and it appears General Motors could be doing exactly that. The company owns a nine percent stake in ride-sharing service Lyft but a new report from Reuters suggests GM could be preparing to offer a competitor in the form of Maven. The GM-owned company allows customers to rent a vehicle for as little as $8 an hour and has recently launched its Gig service which enables San Diego residents to rent a Chevrolet Bolt for $229 per week and then use it to work for GrubHub, Instacart, Roadie, Lyft, or Uber. Despite the appearance of helping the two ride-sharing services, Reuters notes the company is “quietly assembling the knowledge and expertise to enable GM eventually to compete directly with Uber, Lyft, and other startups in offering on-demand mobility services.” Maven’s Julia Steyn seemed to back up this theory by telling the publication, “You’re on the right track. We are building this out step-by-step.” General Motor’s work on autonomous Chevrolet Bolts could also factor into the potential ride-sharing service as its Cruise Automation subsidiary recently launched its own autonomous ride-hailing service known as Cruise Anywhere. The service is currently limited to Cruise employees but it not hard to imagine it could eventually become a threat to Uber and Lyft.

Simpson’s highway police chase, made an appearance on the popular TV show Pawn Stars. Surprisingly, it failed to sell. AUDI R8 V10 PLUS SPYDER MAKING U.S. DEBUT THIS FRIDAY AT THE QUAIL
Following O.J’s arrest, Cowlings sold the Bronco to Simpson’s manager, Mike Gilbert, for $75,000. Gilbert has owned the white Bronco ever since and Ingolstadt’s most powerful convertible ever is making raked up just 20 miles in all those years. Taking it to its first U.S appearance at the annual Monterey Car Week, August 18th. Pawn Stars, he wanted to part ways with it for a cool $1.3 million but despite its history, the stars of the hit The R8 V10 Plus Spyder is powered by the same 610 PS TV show failed to snap it up. (601 HP) naturally-aspirated V10 engine found in the R8 LMS race car, while also boasting a seven-speed S-tronic dual-clutch gearbox. Add them together and you get a 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) acceleration time of just 3.3 seconds, making this one of the world’s fastest drop-top supercars. The R8 V10 Plus Spyder also comes with an exclusive micrommata green exterior, anthracite gray single frame grille, black tailpipe covers, 19” wheels (20” optional), bucket seats and ceramic brakes, among many others.
Determining the value of a vehicle like this is extremely difficult because after all, there is no other Bronco on planet earth quite like it. Last month, we learnt that Gilbert was willing to entertain offers of around $750,000 to sell the Bronco privately but it doesn’t appear to have shifted hands since.
THE DEATH OF DIESEL? HONDA’S NEW OILBURNING CIVIC BEGS TO DIFFER Europe may be looking towards a future without diesel engines, but for now they’re a very real part of the market – even for foreign automakers competing there. Honda, for example, has announced a new 1.6-liter diesel engine for the Civic, built for the European market in Swindon, England. Thanks largely to reduced internal friction, the new “comprehensively revised” i-DTEC engine promises improved fuel economy and emissions without sacrificing on output.

DOES TOYOTA NEED ANOTHER CHEAP SPORTS CAR? By Toyota’s own admission, it no longer wants to be associated with building boring cars and its current design language is a reflection of that. However, the firm’s range continues to be predominantly made up of vehicles that sell in high numbers and are a reflection of what regular consumers demand, not what car enthusiasts desire. The all-new Supra is set to play a role in solving this issue but is there anything else Toyota could do? Perhaps launch a new sports car even smaller than the 86?
Aside from the V10 Plus Spyder, Audi will also be showing off their all-new RS5 Coupe and the R8 LMS GT3 in Pebble Beach, as well as the legendary Audi Sport quattro S1 - 2017 also happens to mark the 30th anniversary of Walter Rohrl’s record run to the top of Pike’s Peak inside the S1. Also, beginning tomorrow, August 17 and running through Sunday, August 20, VIP guests will also benefit from Audi’s exclusive driving experience at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. There, guests will be able to take part in an Audi Sport Performance Drive, behind the wheel of an R8 V10 around Laguna Seca.
To get there, Honda crafted the pistons from a chromium-molybdebnum steel alloy and super-plateauhoned the bores to reduce friction. It also uses a small turbocharger, Bosch fuel injection, a low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation system, and a highly efficient cylinder head port.
In fact, the new engine is certified to deliver 76.3 miles per gallon and produce just 99 grams of CO2 – and those aren’t just Honda’s claims. They’re among the first to be verified under the new Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) and Real Driving Emission (RDE) standards. All the while, it cranks out 120 metric horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque, enabling a 0-62 time of 10.4 seconds – not exactly Type R performance, but not bad for 70+ mpg.
Artist Nobuhiko Honda has designed just that with what he dubs the Toyota Public Sports Concept. The car has been designed for the autonomous motoring era and features a floor-mounted battery pack as well as an electric motor powering the rear wheels. This packaging allows the front and rear overhangs to be reduced significantly. Further helping to immerse the driver in the experience is a glass canopy and a low seating position right in the center of the car. The design of the concept doesn’t mimic any current Toyota models and is quite retro with simple headlights and taillights and no fussy or unnecessary design elements.
