Graham didn’t hide his enthusiasm for a possible upcoming hybrid STI, saying, “For me an STI has to be a manual in the guise it is today, however if you look at [auto-only] M-series BMWs, I don’t think this is the end and I’d be very excited if they had a hybrid petrol STI. NISSAN ADDS A SMOKER, MAKES THE TITAN WAY COOLER

ONE U.K. EXECUTIVE THINKS IT’S POSSIBLE The manual transmission is a dying breed. That’s not news. Modern cars are slowly killing off three-pedal driving in favor of more efficient automatic transmissions. Subaru still offers a manual transmission option on several models but that might not be the case for much longer. In Subaru’s non-sports car offerings, the Impreza, Forester, and Crosstrek can still be optioned with a six-speed manual (five-speed for the Impreza) but not the Outback, Legacy, or new three-row Ascent. Additionally, the manual option can only be equipped on the lower trims and Subaru’s EyeSight package of driver assist safety features cannot be equipped with a manual transmission—the reason the automaker is likely considering having an all-automatic lineup. According to a report from Auto Express, Chris Graham, Subaru Managing Director for the U.K., said, “There are certainly no rumors we’ve heard that manual will continue, or Eyesight will be [offered] with manual. My gut tells me it will be Eyesight with Lineartronic [CVT] ongoing and long-term. Graham continued, “[Subaru wants] to steal the mantle of the safest car in the world. I think if they do that, then they say ‘here’s a manual without Eyesight,’ they’ll just ruin that [message].” “We’ve spoken for many years about [the safety granted by] boxer engines and symmetrical all-wheel drive,” Graham said. “We’re now talking about safety that’s not just underpinned by the chassis, but by Eyesight, boxer, and symmetrical all-wheel drive. All these things are reinforcing the safety message. The safety message is the thing Subaru will want to take forward.” Subaru’s EyeSight system consists of adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning with lane keep assist, and pre-collision throttle management—a feature that reduces engine power before a possible collision. Like most automakers, Subaru plans for an autonomous future, led by EyeSight technologies that are compatible with automatic transmissions. Some automakers offer driver assist technologies on manual-equipped cars but Subaru might not see the benefit in spending the time and effort on that when a low percentage of buyers opt for a manual, and higher levels of automation will soon require an automatic transmission. Does this mean the upcoming WRX and WRX STI models will be automaticonly? It might, especially with rumors that the next STI will have a hybrid

EVEN IF IT’S ONLY A ONE-OFF Nissan may be a Japanese automaker, but its U.S. headquarters are located just outside of Nashville in Smyrna, Tennessee. For the 2018 Work Truck Show, though, Nissan seems to have looked to Memphis for inspiration, creating a one-off Titan concept that’s all about barbecue. Based on a Titan XD King Cab, the Smokin’ Titan features an in-bed smoker and mobile kitchen. But since the wood fire needed to smoke ribs generates quite a bit of heat, Nissan decided to turn the bed into a towable trailer. Drop the tailgate, and the smoker slides out on a sliding tray. On the other side, the bed has a sink with its own onboard water storage system to make cleanup simple and straightforward. In place of the regular bed, Nissan added a custom aluminum flatbed that features three propane grills and a matching set of cutting boards. So if you get hungry while the ribs are smoking, you can grill up a quick snack, and if you’re smoking shoulders, there’s plenty of room to tear the finished meat into tasty morsels of goodness. In the cabin, Nissan added a refrigerator and a custom spice rack. “With its available innovative bed features, lockable Titan boxes, Rockford Fosgate premium audio system and luxurious interior, the Titan XD is a fantastic tailgating truck as is,” said Billy Hayes, Nissan’s North American head of trucks. “But the incredible enhancements made to convert a stock Titan into the Smokin’ Titan—a built-in smoker, stove and spice rack—make it a dream for those who love to spend time with friends and family smoking meat, as I do myself.” Obviously, a truck bed-based trailer has its limitations, and there are plenty of towable smokers that could do a lot more for less money. But as a promotional vehicle, the Smokin’ Titan looks like it works pretty well. Plus, since Nissan says it plans to take it to a few more shows this year, there’s a chance we’ll get to taste some of Nissan’s Titan-smoked barbecue. If that happens, we’ll be sure to report back on how good it is. In the meantime, be sure to support your local barbecue joint. auto news GM REVEALS 2019 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 4500HD, 5500HD, 6500HD

SILVERADO PUTS UP A FIGHT AGAINST THE FORD F-SERIES The 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 has been basking in the spotlight since its debut at the Detroit auto show, and now the Bow Tie brand has revealed the big guns of the Silverado lineup: the Silverado Class 4, 5, and 6 chassis cab trucks. By expanding the Silverado lineup, Chevrolet has positioned itself to better compete against the Ford F-Series and Ram. Though the pickups are considered “medium-duty” based on the Department of Transportation’s truck classification system, they’re most certainly the heaviest-duty Silverados you can buy, slotting above the 2500HD and 3500HD models we have yet to see. Chevrolet’s new trucks will come with Allison transmissions and a 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel V-8 engine making 350 hp and 700 lb-ft of torque. Both two- and four-wheel-drive versions will be available. The Class 6 truck has a gross vehicle weight rating maxing out at 22,500 pounds. Ram doesn’t offer a competing vehicle at this level, although Ford offers even heavier-duty trucks. GM’s goal is to eventually capture upward of 25 to 30 percent of the medium-duty truck market, reports Automotive News. Differentiating itself from Ford and Ram, Chevrolet will offer a factory rear air suspension on its medium-duty trucks. To further reduce noise, vibration, and harshness, the trucks have triple-sealed, inset doors that help curb wind and road noise. The trucks aren’t based on existing trucks and were built from the ground up. Buyers can upfit them with different beds and boxes, a task made easier by their one-piece frame rails and through-the-frame fuel fill lines. Seven Cab-to-Axle options, ranging from 60 to 162 inches, will be available along with five axle-to-back-of frame lengths that run in 8-inch increments. The trucks boast 50-degree wheel cuts, allowing for “walk up” access to the engine compartment. The diesel exhaust fluid tank is located on the passenger side of the truck, on the opposite side of the fuel fill area Expect to find many of the same convenience features you’d see on the Chevrolet Silverado 1500. These include wireless cell phone charging, Bluetooth, built-in 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot compatibility, Onstar and Commercial Link, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. CHEVY GETS BACK INTO BIG TRUCK GAME WITH SUPER-ULTRA EXTRA HEAVY-DUTY SILVERADO

Did you think the Chevy Silverado HD was a pretty big truck? Well it is, in terms of consumer pickups. But this new version is even bigger. Unveiled at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, the new Siverado 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD is a medium-duty truck – not in pickup terms, but in commercial truck terms. The new addition to the Silverado range takes General Motors back into the Class 4, 5, and 6 chassis-cab truck market for the first time since discontinuing the Chevy Kodiak (and GMC TopKick) in 2009. That puts the latest Chevy trucks back in direct competition with the Ford F-450/F-550 and F-650/F-750, and the Ram 4500/5500 Tradesman. But while the 4500/5500/6500 Silverado HDs are decidedly targeted at commercial users, they’ve been designed to be as consumer-friendly as possible. They’ll also be “the most connected commercial truck available,” with features like 4G LTE internet, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and wireless cellphone charging. “Chevy’s designers and engineers were obsessed with making this Silverado the most customer-focused medium duty truck of any major competitor,” said GM fleet chief Ed Peper. “By customer-focused, I mean work-ready trucks that are easy to upfit, easy to drive, easy to service and easy to own.” Truck drivers, fleet managers, upfitters, and technicians may be more concerned about the oily bits that’ll get the job done. To that end, the big new Silverados will come powered by a 6.6-liter Duramax diesel, kicking out 350 horsepower and a monstrous 700 lb-ft of torque. The engine’s mated to an Allison transmission and can be had in two- or four-wheel drivetrains. It’ll also be offered with seven cab-to-axle (CA) sizes ranging from 60 to 162 inches and with five axle-to-back-of-frame (AF) lengths offered in 8-inch increments. There’ll be a rear air suspension offered as well, filling out what’s sure to be a huge range of configurations to cater the new ultra-heavy-duty Silverado to the job for which it’s needed. The new model joins the Colorado, Silverado, Silverado HD, Express, and (Isuzu-made) Low Cab Forward models in an expanding Chevy Trucks lineup.
