In part, that is because reprocessing it often involves breaking the carbon-fiber material away from the polymer it has been bonded to—usually a carbon-fiber composite (CFP) or carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP)—shredding the fiber, and then trying to realign the recycled fiber into a new material, which inevitably has less strength. It helps shed precious pounds from performance-focused cars like those from McLaren (its carbon Monocell is pictured above) as well as upmarket eco-warriors like the BMW i3, and it is increasingly applied as merit-badge splashes of decor on sporty trims of myriad other vehicles. But it also has a dark side in that it’s by no means an eco-conscious material to produce. Carbon fiber’s large ecological footprint centers around the way in which acrylonitrile, the base material for commercial carbon fiber, is currently made: from petroleum, using a process that uses quite a bit of energy, requires an expensive catalyst, and yields hydrogen cyanide, a toxic byproduct. This also helps explain carbon fiber’s high price, as just the acrylonitrile itself—two pounds of which are required for each pound of finished product—accounts for more than half of the production cost of carbon fiber. Fortunately, this issue is at the center of biomass research that aims to make significant cuts to costs and eventually to wean carbon-fiber production off oil entirely. Researchers at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) last month announced that they have created a new catalytic process that is both compatible with renewable feedstocks and has a far better yield than the existing process—98 percent versus 80 to 83 percent. The research team estimates that, using cellulosic biomass (from wood, grasses, or even paper pulp) or starch-based sugars, it could lower the cost of making the base material to below $1 per pound. Growing (Not Pumping) the Materials That cost target has been among the goals of the Renewable Carbon Fiber Consortium, a research effort with a budget of about $8 million funded mostly by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), along with other financial partners that include Ford. Transitioning to variable feedstocks should also make the price itself more stable, as the way it’s produced today leaves it open to fluctuations in typically volatile oil prices. Meanwhile, the demand for carbon fiber is projected to increase by up to 18 percent annually. Researchers have tried other plant-derived feedstocks in the past, including lignin, pitch, and rayon, but the results haven’t been favorable. The next phase of the DOE research is to scale the process up to 110 pounds of production material and test a carbon-fiber component made with it. If these researchers have cracked the code for making carbon fiber to the same strength as the current stuff, the material could become even more widespread—and save a lot of oil to boot. OP-ED: THERE’S A MAJOR PROBLEM WHEN AFFORDABLE HATCH BACKS ARE SELLING FOR INSANE PRICES
Hot hatchbacks have always been affordable machines for enthusiasts to enjoy. Can’t afford a sports car? No worries, automakers have your back with compact hatchbacks that are almost as fun to drive and much more affordable. Or, that was the case until the latest trend of highpowered, track-oriented hatchbacks caught fire. The Ford Focus and Fiesta ST, along with the Volkswagen Golf GTI are proof that fun doesn’t need to be expensive. Enthusiasts wanting more power, more performance, and more aggressive styling now have more options than ever thanks to the Ford Focus RS and Honda Civic Type R. Unfortunately, enthusiasts willing to open up their wallets have found that their pockets aren’t nearly deep enough thanks to owners trying to make a quick buck.

The trend of flipping vehicles is mostly seen in limited-edition supercars and sports cars, like the Ford GT or Porsche 911 R. Ford attempted to get ahead of the issue by requiring buyers to sign a contract stating that they would hang onto the car for at least two years. John Cena couldn’t follow the rules and he got sued. After prices hit insane figures for the 911 R, Porsche decided to do something about customers that flipped its vehicles. The plan, as the automaker laid out, centered around ensuring that flippers can’t get their hands on limited-edition models by stopping their names from getting on the necessary list. While one expects limited-edition cars like the GT and 911 R to be flipped for even more money, it shouldn’t be happening with affordable models like the Focus RS and Civic Type R. Both hatchbacks start at around the $35,000 segment, but early buyers have used Craigslist, eBay, and Auto Trader to sell vehicles for a lot more than their starting prices. The situation is a lot worse for the Civic Type R as it’s the newer, more-limited vehicle. We’ve seen prices for hatchback get up to $82,000, which is ridiculous. Now that the Focus RS has been on the market for a while, things are starting to cool down a bit. But that doesn’t mean people still aren’t marking prices for the hatchback up, as this one on eBay is priced at $50,540 when it should be priced around $43,000.
Once the app confirms you’re traveling with another Hytch Rewards member, it will track your route and then reward users for traveling together. Hytch’s website says users will “earn $0.01 per mile anywhere in Tennessee and $0.05 per mile within the 10 county area known as Middle Tennessee.” The app also allows other companies to sponsor carpooling rides and Hytch says some users may be able to earn $0.12 or more per mile in certain areas. That doesn’t sound like much but Hytch notes the average cost of gasoline is less than $0.10 per mile. While it seems odd that Nissan would get involved in the effort, the company sees the “opportunity as a competitive advantage because the app will enable a better understanding of consumer behavior as more people embrace new forms of mobility, like carpooling, car sharing and ride sharing.” The automaker also noted that data suggests a six percent adoption rate in carpooling would eliminate 1,500 trips into Nashville everyday and this would be the equivalent of adding an extra lane to the interstate. FORMULA ONE PUTS A STOP TO GRID GIRLS FOR 2018 After months of debate, Formula 1 has announced grid girls will become a thing of the past.
To keep people from flipping cars for ridiculous prices, all automakers need to have some sort of plan in place to stop or punish people from doing so. While I think Ford’s plan of making people sign a contract is a little invasive, it’s something every automaker should follow to stop flippers from getting their hands on the vehicle.
The long-standing tradition will formally end with the start of the 2018 FIA Formula 1 World Championship season which kicks off on March 25th at the Rolex Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.
Hot hatchbacks are built by enthusiasts for enthusiasts and they should be sold to enthusiasts, not to people that are looking for ways to make money. Automakers shouldn’t be looking out for the elite who have money to buy one or two 911s, they should be watching out for the average enthusiast who’s just scraping by to have a Civic Type R or Focus RS in their driveway. And that includes keeping prices for affordable hatchbacks at a reasonable amount.
The use of grid girls has come under fire in recent years as some have deemed it an outdated tradition designed to objectify women. Formula 1 seemed to have agreed with this analysis as the group’s managing director of commercial operations, Sean Bratches, said “Over the last year we have looked at a number of areas which we felt needed updating so as to be more in tune with our vision for this great sport.”

NISSAN WANTS TO PAY YOU TO CARPOOL If you happen to live in Tennessee and don’t have a problem picking up strangers then Nissan has the app for you. The automaker has teamed up with up with Hytch to promote carpooling as a way to reduce congestion and explore future mobility solutions. As part of the initiative, the companies have launched the new Hytch Rewards app which aims to connect friends, co-workers and neighbors in an effort to get them to carpool together.
Bratches went on to say grid girls have been a staple of Formula 1 for decades but they “feel this custom does not resonate with our brand values and clearly is at odds with modern day societal norms.” He ended his statement by saying Formula 1 doesn’t believe the use of the gird girls is “appropriate or relevant” to either the organization or to fans across the world.
