APPLE DEVELOPING ITS OWN AUTONOMOUS SHUTTLE SERVICE Apple is remaining remarkably secretive about its self-driving ambitions but The New York Times has learnt something intriguing about the ongoing venture. According to sources close to the project, Apple is developing a self-driving shuttle service which will ferry employees between different Apple buildings. It is thought that this shuttle will be a commercial vehicle from an existing automaker that’ll feature an Apple-developed autonomous driving system. ARIEL PREVIEWS ITS 1,180 HP ELECTRIC SUPERCAR Following yesterday’s report, Ariel has officially released details about its electric sports car project codenamed HIPERCAR.
Apple’s upcoming shuttle service is dubbed PAIL, for Palo Alto to Infinite Loop, and will ferry employees from the company’s office in Cupertino, California down the road to Palo Alto. While the service isn’t up and running just yet, it will act as a crucial tool for the company to test its technologies in real-world conditions.
Set to go into production in 2020, the high-performance model is a range-extended electric vehicle that has a 42 or 56 kWh lithium-ion battery pack which is backed up by a 47 hp (35 kW) micro-turbine range extending engine.
Back in April, Apple was given approval from the California Department of Motor Vehicles to test its autonomous technology in three self-driving Lexus RX 450h SUVs.
The battery pack powers electric motors that each develop 295 hp (220 kW) and 332 lb-ft (450 Nm) of torque. Since the model can be equipped with either rear- or all-wheel drive, the combined output is 590 hp (440 kW) or 1,180 hp (880 kW). In terms of performance, the car will be able to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 2.4 seconds, 0-100 mph (0-161 km/h) in 3.8 seconds, and 0-150 mph (0-241 km/h) in 7.8 seconds. Shortly thereafter, the model will hit its top speed of 160 mph (257 km/h). The HIPERCAR will ride on a lightweight aluminum chassis and the model can be equipped with either forged or carbon composite wheels measuring 20-inches up front and 21-inches in the rear.

UK CARMAKERS COULD BE HIT WITH STEEP TARIFFS AFTER BREXIT AS CARS MIGHT NOT BE BRITISH ENOUGH British car manufacturers could be on the verge of receiving post-Brexit tariffs because not enough of their components are sourced from local suppliers. Generally, UK firms must prove that 50 to 60 per cent of a product’s components come from within the UK to escape tariffs. However, the Automotive Council states that on average, UK cars are only 44 per cent Britishmade, Bloomberg reports. Carmakers are currently permitted to classify parts sourced from Europe as British-made, allowing them to escape tariffs. However, when the country leaves the European Union, all of that will change as rules of origin policies are enforced, forcing brands to research using local suppliers at potentially higher prices. A spokesman from Honda has already said that the company is already investigating new suppliers for the Civic, currently manufactured in the town of Swindon. “If we have a free-trade agreement with the EU after Brexit, then we’ll have to have rules for determining whether the cars coming out of the U.K. really are considered British cars,” said Peter Holmes, an economist at the U.K. Trade Policy Observatory. Secretary general of European auto supplier association CLEPA, Sigrid de Vries, says that a number of car companies are “considering various options.” “Changes will be complex and painful. HARVARD’S NEW SELF-HEALING RUBBER COULD REVOLUTIONIZE TIRES

The tire as we know it could change drastically in the coming years or decades after scientists from Harvard University invented a form of rubber that can heal itself.
A German government minister has decided to ditch his Tesla Model S after experiencing too much range anxiety.
Created by Harvard’s John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS), the rubber goes one step beyond other self-healing materials on the market.
Automotive News has discovered through Germany’s Freedom of Information Act that member of the Green Party and the environment minister of North RheinWestphalia, Johannes Remmel, started to use a fleet Model S to see how it would handle his usual driving routine.
Typically, self-healing materials rely on water to incorporate reversible bonds engineered to promote healing. However, developing a self-healing rubber was much more difficult because it is made from polymers connected by permanent, covalent bonds which can’t reconnect once broken. To overcome the problem, researchers have developed a hybrid rubber with covalent and reversible bonds that are tied together by a so-called ‘molecular rope’ made up of randomly branched polymers. The finished product is flexible and strong and rather than puncturing like traditional rubber, remains connected by fibrous strands that redistribute the stress and snap back to position. Harvard has applied to patent the technology and its uses could be comprehensive, particularly in the automotive world. “Imagine that we could use this material as one of the components to make a rubber tire,” Sichuan University professor Jinrong Wu said. “If you have a cut through the tire, this tire wouldn’t have to be replaced right away. Instead, it would self-heal while driving enough to give you leeway to avoid dramatic damage.”
Despite being a proponent of electric vehicles, Remmel returned the Model S after just 43 trips due to its insufficient range. According to a senior aide, the car wasn’t suitable for the minister’s commutes, despite being advertised with a range of 500 km. In fact, the aide claims it was impossible for Remmel to even achieve 400 km on a single charge, meaning the minister could only travel for about 150 km before knowing he’d have to turn back in order to make it home without running out of charge. What’s more, it is reported that in one instance, Remmel was forced to stop for about 90 minutes to top up just 10 kWh of energy at a conventional charging station. When you’re a busy government minister, that’s obviously a grave inconvenience. We know that in perfect hypermiling conditions, the Model S 100D can travel over 1,000 km on a charge.
